HDD becomes "Write Protected"
Hi,
I am running Vista Business 64bit an an Asus P5WD-Deleux with four hard
drives. Three on Intel S-ATA controller and one on the Jmicron controller.
For no apparent reason Vista will set the drive on the Jmicron
controller to Write Protected. I have changed the drive thinking it may
have been a hardware fault but it still happens. Sometimes running chkdsk
/f on it will change it back to normal, other times it won't and stays that
way until I reboot and then run chkdsk /f.
This Vista prep is around a year old and this has only just (over the
last couple of months) started happening. Has anyone got any ideas?

preventing the welcome center from showing
how do disable the welcome center from showing?
is this done with the file oobe.xml.
actually what i would like to do is start vista and start running
a custom shell (not explorer.exe) again would oobe.xml
be involved in that process or is there a "bigger" idea
that would cause vista to skip
the login screen, the welcome center and just move to running

What could make Ultimate this slow?
I've been using Vista Ultimate for six or so uneventful months. Two
days ago, it seemed to be hanging on the "Welcome" screen, but worked
fine in safe mode. Today, I tried to start it normally again, and it
again seemed to hang on welcome. I forgot about it, then noticed 1/2
hour later that my desktop started to appear, and after about two
hours it had finished booting up.
I'd welcome any thoughts or suggestions.

6TO4 Adapter
Here is an odd problem. Ever since I have had my laptop (which came with
Vista Home Premium installed) device manager shows under Network adapters
that the 6TO4 Adapter is not functioning properly and shows this error:
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers
required for this device. (Code 31)
Of course when I scan for an updated driver it tells me the driver is up to
date. Since I apparently don't use this device (I assume it's for IPv6
connectivity) it's never impacted my system but I am curious as to how to
fix the problem.

After installing Windows Vista I get a single network adapter assigned two IP

File is hidden??
Hi Groupies
Last night I was working on an Access database. I closed the file and its
folder and then decided to go back in to check something. I opened the
folder and THE FILE WASN'T THERE!!
Panic and chaos ensued for a while. I was able to find the file by going
back into access and opening it from it's most recently used file list. I
saved a backup copy etc.....
However, the original file is still not showing up in the folder. I have
changed the folder settings to show hidden files, done a search, everything
I can think of, but the file won't show up.
Thinking that the original is somewhere else and perhaps I have just lost
it, I moved a backup copy into the original folder and tried to change it's
name to that of the original file. Windows gives me the warning that a file
with that name already exists ?!?!?!!
If it exists, how come I can't see it? The folder says there are 9 items but
there are actually 10 if you include this ghost file.
Any ideas???

CNN was using FIREFOX lol
I was watching CNN, and in one moment it started showing a woman talking and
showing some content on a browser, this was in CNN studios...
I was recoding this on my TV tuner card, so I went back out of curiosity and
zoomed in to see what the browser they were using was...
It was firefox 2.0 lol
The OS interface was not apparent.. it might of even have been linux or
unix..
If CNN is using firefox.. I guess that tells us something about IE7 ....
what? That its a CRAP browser?
Firefox is gaining more and more momentum more so even AFTER IE7 was
released..
MS had hoped that after IE7 was released they would stop the surge of people
going to firefox,
the opposite was true..
after seeing the horrible interface of IE7 people started abandoning it far
more faster..
and with good reason..
that UI is not usable.. even with add ones like IE7 pro its still horrible.
I personally use AVANT or Firefox.. avant still uses the IE7 (trident)
rendering engine, but goes away from that stupid IE7 interface..

Vista Folder Icon Question ?

The folder icon is placed inside the folder and I have assigned that icon to

This means that if the folders get transferred to another PC to a different
drive with different drive letter the icons wont display.
Is there a way to embed the icon or assign the icon with an absolute path?

So whose fault is it? Microsoft or nVidia?
I was just wondering. Is it nVidia's fault or Microsoft's fault that I'm
getting 50 less frames per second in every single game? It's not hardware
because in XP I get 50 frames more. And Vista 32 isn't exactly a resource
hog. It only uses 350 megs of ram for me.
So I'm guessing that it's either Vista's implementation of DirectX 9c that's
the culprit or nVidia's horrible drivers. If it IS nVidia, there is just no
excuse for that. I mean Vista has been out for a year and you still haven't
fixed it?
And if it is Microsoft's Direct 9 EX in Vista, then what the heck man... I
mean can't you just copy and paste the code from DirectX 9c in XP to Vista?
I mean whose bright idea was it to use separate teams for the Vista DirectX
and the XP DirectX? I'm sure that's what happened. The people on the XP
DirectX is probably sabotaging the Vista DirectX team out of spite or
something.
I'm not entirely sure who to blame really. All I know is Vista is just
hurting graphics performance for seemingly no particular reason at all.
Maybe I should get a new ATI card... Tag: New nVidia BETA (169.28 10 January 2008) ForceWare Drivers Tag: 301287

Music Folder Thumbnail Art
I'm having major issues with my Music Folder album art.
The folder is organised so that each artist has a folder, and within this
are separate folders for each album by that artist. This I guess i spretty
standard.
In the old XP My Music an artist folder would display multiple thumbnail
images that were pulled from each of the album folders within it.
In vista I'm having problems getting this to happen.
All the music is on a separate partition that I have pointed vista too. Any
old folders that were set up before my change to vista are still showing
album art as described above. So for example the beetles folder has about 3
images of different albums stacked behind one another. When you go down to
the next level each album folder displays one album image.
The problem comes with new folders made since vista was installed.
For these I can go into the album folder add album art, rename it folder.jpg
and it will show up at the album folder level.
However when I go back up to the artist level there is nothing. Just a
standard empty folder icon.
I have googled it this problem to death and cannot find out how to tell the
artist folder to pull its folder images from the one or more album folders
beneath it.
If anyone can tell me how to do this I would be incredibly grateful.
I know it's not exactly a major problem, but for me it's really annoying. Tag: New nVidia BETA (169.28 10 January 2008) ForceWare Drivers Tag: 301265

NEW: Vista to XP Downgrades (fore everyone reguardless pf company who sold your pc) - Customers must supply the downgrade media
If you have Vista Ultimate or Business you can now install XP instead,
before the company who you got the PC needed to give you the OK, now
everyone can do it (New process below.. read on)
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Windows-Vista-to-Windows-XP-Downgrades-Media-75757.shtml
Enlarge pictureWith the advent of Windows Vista, the issue of downgrading to
Windows XP came into the limelight and got a consistent amount of play
throughout 2007. Initially, Microsoft had a complex downgrading process in
place that forced Windows users to go from Vista to XP through unnecessary
activation pains. As a direct consequence of user feedback, the company
simplified the downgrading process, in order to streamline the
implementation of an older Windows iteration in place of Vista.
Here was the old process of downgrading from Vista to XP, courtesy of
Microsoft: "when an end user is using their downgrade rights offered under
the License Terms in Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista Ultimate
editions, and they use both Windows XP media and product keys that were
previously activated, they cannot activate online over the Internet, due to
the hardware configuration change when installing on the Windows Vista
system. In these cases, the end user is prompted to call the Activation
Support Line for assistance. Once it is determined that the end user has a
valid Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate license, the support
representative can help them activate their software."
This is no longer the case at this point, and downgrade users do not have to
manually activate each copy of Windows. The move from Microsoft helped made
downgrades more mainstream, but at the same time generated a negative aura
around the entire process. However, due to the mixed reviews associated with
Vista, and because Microsoft is allowing select customers to go back to XP
from the latest release of the Windows client, downgrading became virtually
an antonym to upgrading. And this is not the case. Not even by far.
Customers and, especially, businesses have the option of acquiring new
computers, as a part of the process of upgrading their hardware
infrastructure, while also buying licenses for the latest Windows version
available on the market. This is not to say that their environment is ready
for a migration to Vista, and in this context, Microsoft is offering
business customers the alternative of running an older variant of Windows
until transition plans are complete.
"If your license of Windows has downgrade rights, then you can use: 'Volume
Licensing media (provided the end user has a Volume Licensing agreement),
retail (FPP), or system builder hologram CD (provided the software is
acquired in accordance with the Microsoft OEM System Builder License)'. So
any media for the qualifying downgrade version that the customer owns
through another license already can be used", revealed Eric Ligman,
Microsoft US Senior Manager, Small Business Community Engagement.
Where does the media come from? Well, Ligman offered the answer: "the
downgrade media must be supplied to you from the end user and must come from
Microsoft retail, OEM/system builder, or Volume Licensing channels." This
actually means that the customer will have to deliver the media for the
downgrade, in order for the OEM to take care of the process. The obvious
alternative is for the user to perform the downgrade and to take the OEM out
of the equation. Tag: New nVidia BETA (169.28 10 January 2008) ForceWare Drivers Tag: 301236

OT: AT&T and Other ISPs May Be Getting Ready to Filter Internet Usage

AT&T and Other ISPs May Be Getting Ready to Filter
By Brad Stone
For the past fifteen years, Internet service providers have acted - to use
an old cliche - as wide-open information super-highways, letting data flow
uninterrupted and unimpeded between users and the Internet.
But ISPs may be about to embrace a new metaphor: traffic cop.
At a small panel discussion about digital piracy here at NBC's booth on the
Consumer Electronics Show floor, representatives from NBC, Microsoft,
several digital filtering companies and telecom giant AT&T said the time was
right to start filtering for copyrighted content at the network level.
Such filtering for pirated material already occurs on sites like YouTube and
Microsoft's Soapbox, and on some university networks.
Network-level filtering means your Internet service provider - Comcast,
AT&T, EarthLink, or whoever you send that monthly check to - could soon
start sniffing your digital packets, looking for material that infringes on
someone's copyright.
"What we are already doing to address piracy hasn't been working. There's no
secret there," said James Cicconi, senior vice president, external & legal
affairs for AT&T.
Mr. Cicconi said that AT&T has been talking to technology companies, and
members of the MPAA and RIAA, for the last six months about implementing
digital fingerprinting techniques on the network level.
"We are very interested in a technology based solution and we think a
network-based solution is the optimal way to approach this," he said. "We
recognize we are not there yet but there are a lot of promising
technologies. But we are having an open discussion with a number of content
companies, including NBC Universal, to try to explore various technologies
that are out there."
Internet civil rights organizations oppose network-level filtering, arguing
that it amounts to Big Brother monitoring of free speech, and that such
filtering could block the use of material that may fall under fair-use legal
provisions - uses like parody, which enrich our culture.
Rick Cotton, the general counsel of NBC Universal, who has led the company's
fights against companies like YouTube for the last three years, clearly
doesn't have much tolerance for that line of thinking.
"The volume of peer-to-peer traffic online, dominated by copyrighted
materials, is overwhelming. That clearly should not be an acceptable,
continuing status," he said. "The question is how we collectively
collaborate to address this."
I asked the panelists how they would respond to objections from their
customers over network level filtering - for example, the kind of angry
outcry Comcast saw last year, when it was accused of clamping down on
BitTorrent traffic on its network.
"Whatever we do has to pass muster with consumers and with policy standards.
There is going to be a spotlight on it," said Mr. Cicconi of AT&T.
After the session, he told me that ISPs like AT&T would have to handle such
network filtering delicately, and do more than just stop an upload dead in
its tracks, or send a legalistic cease and desist form letter to a customer.
"We've got to figure out a friendly way to do it, there's no doubt about
it," he said. Tag: New nVidia BETA (169.28 10 January 2008) ForceWare Drivers Tag: 301227
