DVD Drive Ownership Blocked
Hi, I have two Acer desktop computers with Vista Business SP1 they both have
blocked security permissions on the DVD Drive. There is a crossed out circle
on the icon, and I cannot access any discs from the drive (it opens empty).
"Access is denied" when I try to access it through the command prompt.
In the Security Properties of the drive the Current Owners is "Unable to
display current owner". I am unable to add a member or group to the
ownership there. Is tells me "Unable to set new owner on DVD RW Drive (E:).
Access is denied".
I'm accessing all this through the built-in Administrator account, and have
opened the command prompt as Administrator.
*I have been able to get in through Safe Mode in the Administrator account,
but still have been unble to find a way to open this up for users and admins.
Thank you! Tag: missing .DLL file Tag: 355371
Vista SP1 conflict???
I am running Vista Home Premium with SP1 on an HP Media Center PC. After a
regular install of Delorme Street Atlas USA 2008 the program was fine. Now
after SP1 (the only recently installed software) the title screen briefly
flashes after double clicking the destop icon but the program does not run.
I have tried running as Administrator and have followed their suggestion to
uninstall and reinstall with Selective Startup and with cleared Startup
Items. Any suggestions?

Multiple Desktop folders
I have a situation similar to the person who posted this:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.vista.general&tid=42ee2a8e-34e7-40c4-a265-2af41b58cb8b&m=1&p=1
The thing is that when I delete the extra folders (and I have checked which
ones seem to be the extra ones in the manner suggested in the post above) I
still end up not being able to open the original Desktop, as "the folder xxx
has been removed" or some such.
The folders go down 7 levels (Computer>Music>Desktop>Desktop>Desktop>Desktop
etc.) and are situated in the Music folder, for some stange reason.
How do I get rid of this? Tag: missing .DLL file Tag: 355332
windows.old cannot be deleted...
Hi.
I reinstalled Vista (x64 ultim., in Italian) upon a previous
installation, then another time, 'cause the previous one went bad
(drivers' issues; black screen); so I've got "windows.old" and a
"windows01.old" folders.
I easily deleted the latter, then I rebooted and tried to delete the
former. Thus I hit "DEL", and deleted the folder (some 10 gb).
Thereafter I rebooted, but... windows.old is still there on the root!
Thus I tried to delete it, but the prompt said (I approximate a
"translation" from italian to English)
"impossible to find the item; it is no more present in c:. please
check the item's path and try again"
OMG! But how! I see it! It is still there!
What can I do please? I want to remove it at all costs; it is like a
challenge, 'cause I feel very frustrated that I have installed a OS
behaving such a way!
Thanks. Tag: missing .DLL file Tag: 355330

.pps files
I am using Vista Home Premium 32-Bit. I have not subscribed to Microsoft
Office. My problem lies with opening .pps files. It interrupts the process
by asking for a Product Key. When I decline and get the slide show back it
has lost the sound. I have installed the Windows 97 Power Point Viewer and
selected it as the default program but the problem remains. I have even gone

Weird Virtual PC behavior
I have Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 installed on my Vista machine.
However, if I go to Start, Programs and select Microsoft Virtual PC,
nothing happens. Well, that's not strictly true. The logo flashes on
screen for a second or two, and there's a presence on the taskbar.
But if I click on the Virtual PC item on the taskbar it just
disappears. However, if I double-click on the .vmc file the program
opens fine.
This is a problem because I can't seem to change the setting for my
chosen virtual machine. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling
Virtual PC but that didn't solve it. It worked fine up until a couple
of days ago.
Anyone any thoughts?
Thanks

Control Panel doesn't show up in Vista SOLVED
Since yesterday I had this problem accessing the Control Panel in Vista, the
only thing I changed to the system was adding a Hauppauge TV Card. What
would happen is that when you clicked on Control Panel nothing would be

I know that when using 32-bit Vista you can't expect to see all 4GB of

3GB. The BIOS reports 4GB.
Is this unusual or indicative of a problem?

Vista IS definitely a better NT kern
It started with NT - with the intent that if something crashed, it wouldn't
take the rest of the system with it.
XP was pretty good at that.
So far, Vista is TOPS!
I've had 2 lockups with my HDTV program (both times I was doing a bunch of
things at once and confused it) - it locked and Vista gave me a message -
cancel it or look for an answer. Nice!
I just had my first lockup with NWN2 this evening (after a LOT of playing!)
- same thing - cancel it or look for an answer. Very nice!
Can't recall any other program lockups, and no system lockups.
More stable and rock solid than XP and I thought XP was pretty darn good.
Gotta say, this is darned enjoyable!!!

Fraud - Just FYI - For Kevpan815 the Nutjob Just FYI
Financial identity theft
A classic example of credit-dependent financial crime (bank fraud) occurs
when a criminal obtains a loan from a financial institution by impersonating
someone else. The criminal pretends to be the victim by presenting an
accurate name, address, birth date, or other information that the lender
requires as a means of establishing identity. Even if this information is
checked against the data at a national credit-rating service, the lender
will encounter no concerns, as all of the victim's information matches the
records. The lender has no easy way to discover that the person is
pretending to be the victim, especially if an original, government-issued id
can't be verified (as is the case in online, mail, telephone, and fax-based
transactions). This kind of crime is considered non-self-revealing, although
authorities may be able to track down the criminal if the funds for the loan
were mailed to them. The criminal keeps the money from the loan, the
financial institution is never repaid, and the victim is wrongly blamed for
defaulting on a loan s/he never authorized.
In most cases the financial identity theft will be reported to the national
Consumer credit reporting agency or Credit bureaus(US) as a collection or
bad loan under the impersonated person's record. This person may discover
the incident by being denied a loan, by seeing the accounts or complaints
when they view their own credit history, or by being contacted by creditors
or collection agencies. The person's credit score, which affects one's
ability to acquire new loans or credit lines, will be adversely affected
until they are able to successfully dispute the complaints and have them
removed from their record.
Other forms of examples of bank fraud associated with identity theft include
"account takeovers," passing bad checks, and "busting out" a checking or
credit account with bad check, counterfeit money order, or empty ATM
envelope deposits. If withdrawals or checks are made against the
impersonated person's real accounts, that person may need to convince the
bank that the withdrawal was fraudulent or file a court case in order to
retrieve lost funds. If checks are written against fraudulently opened
checking accounts, then the person receiving the checks will suffer the
financial loss, however they might try to retrieve money from the
impersonated person by using a collection agency which would appear in the
person's credit history until they can show that it was fraud.
Identity cloning and concealment
In this situation, a criminal acquires personal identifiers, and then
impersonates someone for concealment from authorities. This may be done by a
person who wants to avoid arrest for crimes, by a person who is working
illegally in a foreign country, or by a person who is hiding from creditors
or other individuals. Unlike credit-dependent financial crimes, these issues
can be non self-revealing, continuing for an indeterminate amount of time
without being detected. The criminal might attempt to obtained fraudulent
documents or IDs consistent with the cloned identity to make the
impersonation more convincing.
Criminal identity theft
When a criminal identifies himself to police as another individual it is
sometimes referred to as "Criminal Identity Theft." In some cases the
criminal will obtain a state issued ID using stolen documents or personal
information belonging to another person, or they might simply use a fake ID.
When the criminal is arrested for a crime, they present the ID to
authorities, who place charges under the identity theft victim's name and
release the criminal. When the criminal fails to appear for his court
hearing, a warrant would be issued under the assumed name. The victim might
learn of the incident if the state suspends their own drivers license, or
through a background check performed for employment or other purposes, or in
rare cases could be arrested when stopped for a minor traffic violation.
It can be difficult for a criminal identity theft victim to clear their
record. The steps required to clear the victim's incorrect criminal record
depend on what jurisdiction the crime occurred in and whether the true
identity of the criminal can be determined. The victim might need to locate
the original arresting officers, or be fingerprinted to prove their own
identity, and may need to go to a court hearing to be cleared of the
charges. Obtaining an expungement of court records may also be required.
Authorities might permanently maintain the victim's name as an alias for the
criminal's true identity in their criminal records databases. One problem
that victims of criminal identity theft may encounter is that various data
aggregators might still have the incorrect criminal records in their
databases even after court and police records are corrected. Thus it is
possible that a future background check will return the incorrect criminal
records. Tag: missing .DLL file Tag: 355009
