    - Fat32 XP can read vista ntfs partition Hi, I am used to dual booting xp O/S and typically I keep one partition NTFS (everyday usage) and the other FAT32 (software testing). This is so when I boot into my FAT32, my NTFS is hidden and the primary drive is C:\ I bought a new desktop with Vista intalled on it, I have successfully partitioned and dual booted with XP. Vista is NTFS and XP is FAT32, when I boot into the FAT32 XP, the primary comes up as H:\ and the C:\ is still the Vista partition which easily browsable? Why can XP read Vista NTFS partition?     - Very interesting post-SP1 CPU usage... With 2 or 3 apps running (firefox, thunderbird, etc), CPU usage drops to zero percent and rarely exceeds 5%. Closing all apps and just watching the CPU Usage in the Windows Task Manager (after waiting for things to "settle down"), the CPU usage is HIGHER (5-19%) than with several apps open. My THEORY (or perhaps my WAG) is that by not having apps open, Vista is running Indexing operations, consuming more CPU time than my frequently used apps require. Had I not started this post, i would just close them all and check it right now. I'll reply to my own post in a bit... It's my perception (and I may be wrong), but SP1 seems to be reducing CPU load.     - SP1 still not showing up I've read the MS website with the reasons for SP1 not showing up. The only possible reason on my system might be one of the "bad" drivers. So how the fuck do I figure out which one it is and update it so I can get SP1? The should be a one click deal, not hunting all over the internet for updated drivers.     - SP1 and disk transfer speeds I take quite a few photos with a 9 mega pixel camera. Since I installed Vista, it has taken an extremely long time to transfer images from my 1GB CF card to my computer, even though I use and internal usb2 reader. I upgraded to SP1 a few days ago, tonight was the first chance I had to transfer files since the upgrade to SP1. I transfered about 70MB worth of photos from the CF card to my hard drive in less than three seconds! In the past this transfer would have taken a good minute or more.     - Windows Vista Crash My computer recently started crashing, mostly during video games (Crysis, Call of Duty 4), and occasionaly during a movie. The screen goes black, then fills with vertical pinstrips over the entire screen, and the sound 'freezes' like a skipping CD, repeating what was last said or heard over and over rapidly. Ok,... recent changes i've made. I've had a new video card for about a month, but everything worked fine until a week ago. I installed the two above mentioned video games, which use punkbuster, a product I have no experience with. Incidentaly, the problems began about the time I started using punkbuster. However, I restored the system to a point previous to the punk buster installation, and the system is still crashing. Is it my new video card (ATI Radeon B2 512 HD 2600 xt PCI), or something else.     - Menus displaying incorrectly? Hi, I've just installed Vista (64bit) and I appear to have a slight bug. When I right click on the desktop or left click to access a applications menus, the drop down menu always appears to the left of the cursor (unless of course the menu is constrained by the edge of the screen). Whilst this is not a huge problem, it is annoying nonetheless. I have checked all settings in my mouse driver (Logitech Setpoint 4.4) and under mouse properties in control panel and find no reference to menu positioning.     - Vista bootup - what's normal screen? logo? I've checked and General is "normal" and boot is not ticked... I get about 15 secs of blackness, 5 secs of progress bar at the bottom, another 10 secs of blackness and then Vista. If I tick no gui in boot, I get "aurora" for the whole duration with no progress bar. Is this normal?     - 'Read only' issue I have a couple of HD connected to my PC with music files and image (photos) files but I can't edit them because VISTA makes them 'read only' and doesn't allow me to change it. I have adjusted all my permissions to 'complete control' , have disabled UAC but to no avail. If I change the file properties from read-only to read/write (ie uncheck the read-only file attribute), it comes back as read-only!!! What? I uncheck the checkbox, close the folder properties dialog window, and re-open it only to find the read-only checkbox selected. And yes Iâ??m in Admistrator mode.     - How do I always allow a program access in UAC? I read the "answer" post about UAC, and was wondering why when I set something to "run as administrator" in it's Properties it does not do so on an Administrator account? On the Guest account I have set up the program runs without asking for any kind of verification or admin password, but it always asks for such when run from the administrator account. What has gone wrong here? Is there some way to make a program "trusted" (like all Microsoft products) so that it doesn't ever need verification for all accounts on a system? Tag: lock up Tag: 349320

    - VC++ 2005 runtime failure Okay, I'm not quite sure where to post this, so I'll start here and follow it where ever it leads me. I am developing programs that use components authored with MS VC 2005 (I am not the author, I just use the components). Functionality in Vista so far has not been an issue. However, since installing Vista SP1, installing the VC++ 2005 SP1 redist package will cause any component using those runtime to fail during the registration process with the following message: "The module "dwshengine80.dll" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files. Invalid access to memory location." That component is installed in %SYS%. The VC++ 2005 redist is installed before the registration process and seems to be the catalyst here. I did contact the author who is apparently on vacation and will look at it after he gets back. In the mean time I'm searching for my own answers.     - Vista-Ultimate, Offline files not working (NAS) I have a notebook with Vista-Ultimate on it. I have a Intel SS4000-E NAS unit in my network on wich all of my data resides.I have marked several files/folders for 'allways available offline' but when I'm offline I can't open the files (Error: 0x800710FE: This file is currently not available for use on this computer). Syncing also gives an error for each and every file in the Sync-Center 'The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process' while I'm the only user on the system at this time and it's NOT in use. I've read that offline files may not work correctly with NAS units, I've also seen some postings about making changes to the 'samba' software ?? But I don't know how to do that or if the SS4000 even uses Samba... I'm not sure how to proceed, but I really, really, really need my offline files Can someone please help me ? TIA, Jurjen.     - Conditional Formatting I have three tables, that are measuring three different values for the same item. If all three values are above a certain value, say 2 for example, then I want all three cells to be highlighted in yellow. So just to clarify: item A in table 1 might have a value of 3, item A in table 2 might be 2.4, and item A in table 3 might have a value of 2.1. If that's the case, I want the cells that contain the values 3, 2.4, and 2.1 all to highlight. And I need this to apply to 3 tables each with 25 items. Any help is much appreciated.     - Vista system restore I wanted to do a system restore back a few days when i tried i got thi error message "the disk Local disk (C: has errors" so it say check fo errors so i do and restart my computer it starts to check for error then it freezes at 1% or 3% i have tried to leave it but there is n progress for hrs. so i am thinking i have a much bigger problem tha just a system restore.     - Vista install issue on new system I am building a new system and have a new copy of Vista Home Premium 32bit. I got it all put together and tried to load Vista. It got to the Windows is loading files screen and then screen in getting black video. Keyboad and mouse stopped working at times. So I updated the board BIO's per intel through iso image and same thing. So I tried installing XP and got to the F8 screen to accept lic. and it just reboots everytime. Any ideas why Vista would stop? Added the info about the XP install so it may help.     - Odd Sleep/Hibernation I have an HP Pavilion HDX0910NR notebook running Vista Ultimate 64-bit. About 2 weeks it has begun doing something similar to hibernating. I can be using the computer without any issues and I will walk away from the computer for a few hours and come back and there is no HD activity, the screen is black and no matter what I press on the keyboard or mouse the PC very rarely responds. On the rare occasion it does only the screen will come back on and I can choose to open windows but they never open. After a few clicks I still get mouse movement but nothing responds. I had done a recovery in January because of some other issues but this just started 2 weeks ago. I have verified all of my power settings and nothing is set to turn off or spin down or go to sleep. HP even had me remove the performance setting entry in the device manager and reboot but that didn' work. I'd like to avoid a reload if possible. If it helps with a diagnosis, I leave Live Messenger running on that notebook at all times and i can see it signed in at work and after a few hours it signs out at home. Tag: lock up Tag: 349194

    - Automatic Backup - filled my D: drive and now wont backup anymore I have a Dell notebook with Vista Home Premium. The Hard drive came partitioned into the C: drive and D: drive (a 10GB recovery partition). I set Automatic Backup to create backup files on the D: drive, and it worked fine. However, the backups filled the D: drive within a few months and now when backup runs I get a message saying that the backup failed because there isn't enough space on the D: drive.     - How change from dual boot to single boot Vista? XP is on 1st primary partition [active] and is old. Vista is on 2nd Primary partition and is new. Dual boot info, I believe, is all on the XP partition. Soon I will want to go to Vista only. Do I just delete the XP partition (after imaging it, of course!) and set Vista partition to active? (Paragon Partition Manager) Will it then automatically boot into Vista (which has no boot.ini)?     - Ref: Donating old PC Hi folks ! I got to wipeing the hard drive with dban. This is the exact message I get when it is finished. Dban succeeded. All selected disk have been wiped. Remove the Dban boot media and power off. Saving log file to floppy disk saved/floppy/dbanlog/dban.0004.tyz. Dban finished. Press enter to save the log file. When I do that it says insert boot disk. It goes no futher. So I ran Dban on autonuke, got the above message when it finished (2 HR). With out powering off I put in a blank floppy and hit enter. Then I got the following, dbanlog/dban0003.tyz. Then it said hit enter again. I did this and got up to 0114.tyz. I got tired of hitting enter, so I removed the floppy. I put in the recovery CD that came with the PC. I then got a message that says "out of memory" What am I not doing right? This is driving me nuts. I am retired so I got the time to play around. I don't want to put any money into the old PC (8yrs old). I want to install the OS "Windows ME", Office 2000 and the drivers for the printer, scanner and CD burner. -- Ron Tag: lock up Tag: 349089

    - Backing up problems I am having problems backing up using Vista Home Premium. For some reason I am unable to change my backup settings to enable me to save to anything other than my "D" drive.     - **Windows explorer has stopped working.** It seems MS has a major problem with this, as I too am getting this error, then it corrects it's self. In my case: Newly built PC running Vista Home Edition.... All the latest Vista drivers..... Checked for the "Digital locker" problem in the faqs and don't have it... Ran Norton (latest updates) no viruses or malware... None of the other posts under this topic seem to be the cause either... If anyone has found out something new might as well post here as I've tried everything short of emailing tech support and blowing my 90 days on one issue.... Am beginning to think there should be a group action lawsuit against MS for charging for email after the 90 days from the first request. It seems to be in MS's best interest to produce software with bugs (although I doubt they do so intentionally), then charge for support... Seems like as buggy as Vista is they should privide "Free" tech support at least for the first 3 years of it's release and "free" email support forever as it seems many "Fixes" seems to cause problems as well....     - Post Vista SP1, Windows RE (Startup Repair) Hi All, I think I have an issue with The Startup Repair tool (RE) [1]. The problem is I cannot get beyond this tool, or it's desire to scan and reboot the system. I have gone through this cycle about 6 times now. The computer is a Dell Inspiron with a recevery partition (D:). I installed SP1 two days ago. Since then the computer has been rebooted about 5 times. On the 6th, all hell broke loose. I don't believe any changes have been made since then. Naively, I want to question how RE does not know how to work with Vista SP1. Perhaps RE is on the D: partition and was not updated? I've transcibed the log below. Any ideas?     - Resigned to wait for SP1 on my VAIO I have the (presumably) dreaded "problematic driver" issue on my VAIO VGN-430N/B Laptop. It uses the "stwrt.sys" driver noted as problematic on MS's website for SP1: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948343 (SP1 not offered by Windows Update). An updated driver is not available on Sony's website or on the MS Update website. I suppose the best thing to do is to wait for Sony to figure this out and put the update on their website or send it to MS for inclusion in the MS Update process. Apparently, after that is updated, SP1 will be offered. Funny, Sony support knew nothing about this issue. Told me to try defraging my drive and to try again... sheesh! Anyhow... that's my plan. It occurs to me that this may be a better plan than downloading the full SP1 and trying to "force fit" it into your system. I've read so many heartaches about trashed systems. i have a nw latitude d830 with vista (that i hate) the 1st time i boot it up
every day after every thing comes up it freez or locks up, you hold the on
off button and shut it down and then turn it on again and it runs fine.

Contact Dell for repair/replacement. This is a hardware issue, probably
related to the power supply. This would be an excellent time to exchange
the laptop for one that you didn't hate, also. Talk to the Dell tech
support people about it.
