    - USB devices in Vista 64 Home Preimum Hello. I have vista 64 home preimum installed. Now in the begining USB devices worked fine, you put them in and vista reckonises them as per all the drivers pre installed (as XP was) But then my mate came round with his mobile phone that acts as a memory stick too, it would reckonise his phones memory stick, so i downloaded the software for the phone and that seemed to work using the phones software.     - Running Power Point 2003 in Windows Vista Premium Home I have been using this set up for almost a year. Today Power Point 2003 started closeing constantly! It says check for updates I did that installed them and rebooted no change. Then I ran error checking with repair on the hard drive no change.     - Looking for Utility to Repair vista bootloader? I trying to dual boot with xp, & part of this process involves having a vista cd to repair the bootloader. But my computer only came with Restore cd. So I am looking for a utility program to fix the bootloader (instead of using vista cd to repair it). I posted this on a different group: I bought a Gateway computer ( http://tinyurl.com/2x5uwa ) with vista, but it only comes with recovery CD not the original. I was following the instruction as per this website http://tinyurl.com/3xepar. So I installed xp successfully. Now at this point I should be putting the vista cd and select repair to fix the bootloader. But I only have the restore cd. I tried putting it in. The first screen it gives me does not have the vista option. Instead it's a Gateway recovery screen. You have two options, do you want to run from disc or from small recovery partition on the hard drive.     - Windows not booting properly Hello, My computer is using Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit, and as of now it's really hard to turn on my computer. It began yesterday, I turned my computer on and it would crash in the middle of loading up Vista. It usually freezes at the part where you are told how much ram your computer has but has also frozen in various other parts while loading and is irritating me since most of the times it never boots properly. I often get into a black screen asking me if I want to enter safe mode or go to Windows normally. Sometimes, after turning it on and off in an attempt of trial and error, I can somehow manage to get it to work as it did now as I'm typing the message. Nonetheless, The only thing I can give you guys about this is: 1. I got an error once on a black screen that specified me that the /windows/system32/ntkrnlpa.exe "kernel is missing". 2. Another time I got in a blue screen with lots of information in it but what seemed to be the highlight of everything was the file "ntfs.sys". 3. Sometimes, when I turn on my computer, it freezes and makes a never ending beep. Anyone know how can I fix this or do I need to send my computer to maintenance?     - Reply screen in Windows Mail partly off screen I had to upgrade Vista as I couldn't install some downloads. Now when I reply to a message in mail the right hand side of the screen is off my screen (in this case the 3 words- side of the) is off my computer screen. Also the case in my Word program.     - NVIDIA GForce 6150 Driver Issue with Vista I upgraded to Vista after purchasing my computer in Dec. For some reason, everytime I start my computer, I get a box saying Windows needs to install Divice Driver for NVIDIA GForce 6150... If I let it download, it messes up my computer and I can't get online. I had to call my internet service provider and have them help me to go back to before it installed.     - Which external HDD is compatible with Vista x64? I am trying to find an external hard disk drive that is fully compatible with Vista x64. I purchased a Western Digital My Book Premium II drive and it doesn't work properly even though their web site states that is Vista compatible. I contacted them and they fairly ridiculed me for assuming that that meant it would be compatible with 64-bit Vista. I can still use the drive to actually copy files to but there is no 64-bit driver so the bundled software doesn't work and Vista keeps telling me that it needs to install a driver for this device. I contacted Seagate about their FreeAgent Pro product and they claim it should work even though there is also no 64-bit driver for it. I don't trust that statement after my experience with the WD drive. Google works circles around them and makes them useless on everything. Why do they even exist except to sell you up?     - Black screen when pc wakes up Hi when I wake up my eMachine t5234 by hitting return, it only displays a black screen. I know the monitor is on because when I turn off/on the power switch it displays the Acer logo but then goes black again.     - User-oriented vs subject-oriented storage configuration Whenever you want to store something in Vista, it directs you by default to your own user's storage area, and not to a specific disk (or disk directory). The way user-oriented storage is organised (named) changes with every version of OS, which creates havoc if you're interested in storing information in an orderly manner for more than about , 6 months, or if you use more than one OS. Similarly, by default, Unix/Linux lets you write only to your own area. The reason for this is apparantly security To an ordinary user, this user-based system is absurd: the most obvious example is that family photos should go into a shared family photos directory, not to some obscure user-specific storage area with an alias instead of a name. With V*sta, every time you want to store a photo, you have to click on 'My computer' (or whatever it is in English nowadays), and then work through the directory structure. Another example of M$ user-unfriendliness: I had to stop using Excel when M$ decided (W2000) that template files (xlt) should be user-specific (each user needs his/her own copy in his/her own user area; try maintaining that for 40 users...). That isn't what templates are about. Why can't an OS have an option that allows a user to have the disk structure as the default 'save' option for storage? Instead the standard windows icon/picture is shown. The pictures are visible for a short moment and then replaced by the default windows icon picture.     - "Computer" on Vista Home Premium This morning while on at our Club's Computer Class room, I was performing some updates on one of the new (yesterday) HP desktop computers. Then, I thought I would place some images on the computer for use in the Photoshop class. No matter how I opened the "Computer" I could see the folders on the left. Once I would click on a folder to display the contents, the contents appeared but the folders went away. Therefore there was no means of using drag and drop to move the images from the USB flash drive to the Pictures folder. As it turned out, there is no way to drag and drop any file to any folder.     - SP1 - big disappointment for me I have been hanging on with Vista in case SP1 fixed all the bugs and have been running it for a few days now - but still the big problems persist - I still get random catastrophic USB failures. Seems that Vista just cannot cope with multiple USB connections as well as XP can. The folder settinsg seem to get remembered a bit better now, but I still cannot understand the "logic" which decides what folders are opened with what settings. They just seem totally random to me, bearing no relation to the content. At least now the manual changes are remembered until the next time though..... It is still dismally slow to reboot. And still the annoying "permission required" warnings when I want to delete something obviously redundant (eg leftover foldes from uninstalled software). Still too much bloat and incompatibility with other microsoft products (eg microsoft fingerprint reader and sidebar do not coexist without conflict, windows fax files are not included in Vista backups and you can't move the fax default folder to somewhere that is included in backups without crashing fax, DEP still prevents downloading of jpeg movies from a microsoft telephone via microsoft mobile device center, and liveone care still not properly compatible with Vista). If Microsoft can't even make their own products compatible with one another then it is no surprise that Vista does not work with a whole load of other perfectly good software. DISASTER!!!     - Copy user profiles / overwriting defalut profile The setup of my pc was done from a local admin account. Now i'm going to join a domain but the new profile is done on basis of "default user". I tried to copy the 'admin' profile into the 'default' profile (loged on from a third account with admin prev) doing: 1. Control Panel\System. 2. Click on Advanced System Settings. 3. Click Settings button under the User Profiles section. 4. Click the profile you want to copy. 5. Click Copy to and type in or browse for the profile you want to overwrite. 6. Click the Permitted to use button and add all user accounts that you want to give full control of the profile to. 7. Click Ok. Vista tells me that there is someting wrong with the new (domainbased) profile and as a result using a 'temporary' profile. Instead of coping to 'default' profile i tried to copy to the domain profile => no error messages but a complete migration of the conf. is not done (desktop background, icons etc) Any suggestions?     - My Favorites has moved to a folder I went to my favorites today (the yellow star symbol on the browser) and got this message C:\users\ch\videos\favorites\ favorites refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the internet or a network, then try again. If it still cannot be located it may have been moved to a different location. Now I have been using the pc every day and have made no changes of which I am aware. I only managed to find where my favorites had gone, by using SEARCH. I found them in a folder all set out in individual folders. But clicking the "star" only brings up the error message I mentioned, and trying "add to Favorites" puts them in the folder mentioned above. I discovered they are in a folder named Vista (C:) >users>ch>videos>favourites, which I never made, as far as I am aware. I want to know how to get them back to the conventional list I had before.     - Downloaded files go to local temp internet directory When I've downloaded files from the net, I choose a directory to save the file but then get error message saying that I don't have permission to save files in that location and to ask the Administrator for permission. I am the Administrator and I have no other users. All the files downloaded go to the Local temp file since I don't have permission.     - Windows update and SP1 FYI, SP1 would not appear for me in the Windows Update even though all hardware and software met MS' spec's for Vista. I did upgrade my sound card and software in order to meet spec's. I decided to download SP1 from MS download page to get the standalone version. After waiting a couple weeks and reading this and other NG's I decided to install SP1. It installed with out a hitch. I didn't need to un-hook USB devices as was recommended in these NG's and I didn't need to disconnect my UPS. Mater of fact SP1 recommends that you connect to a UPS so you won't lose power while installing. The only things I did disable where Windows Defender Fire walls and Virus autoscan protection.     - Help! MS Internet Explorer toasted! Hello All, I apologize for what may seem like excessive length of message: please be patient. My daughter came to me the other day with her Dell Inspiron 1531 (IIRC) laptop complaining that is was taking forever to start up. I mean it was never fast but it has really gone to extremes. Anyway one thing I noticed is that MS Internet Explorer, when started, returns and error pinpointing Google Toolbar then shuts down. What's the best way to repair or re-install MSIE? My understanding is that MSIE is integral to Vista so this could be at the root of some other problems, such as that the window that is supposed to open for "Default Applications" immediately shuts. Also, updates sit there waiting on the tool bar in spite of the fact that it is set to update automatically. When I click on the icon a window opens and shuts immediately. I did a boot time scan with Avast! which generated an list of obscurely named files which it said were damaged and unreadable. They are all located folders which I guess would normally be hidden. I am wondering if these have anything to do with the registry and are therefore slowing things down as Vista struggles to rebuild. Another clue in that direction is that Ad-Aware hangs when trying to do the deep registry scan. If I skip that part of the scan it hangs during the file scan one or another obscurely named file. I have not yet correlated one these with the list generated by Avast!, maybe it will not be necessary if I can find another way to address these problems.     - Vista SP1 with Outlook 2007 "Not Responding" Just FYI.... I only posted this here because the issue appeared only after SP1 update. In case anyone else sees this. After installing SP1 I found that my Outlook 2007 would go into "Not Responding" mode after being open for an hour or so. This did not happen pre-Vista SP1. The Outlook process could not be ended via Task Manager. Only a reboot using the hardware switch would work. Shutdown would stall. Ugly. I had been using my .pst file via a mapped drive (the .pst was actually located on a network 2003 server, not the local Vista machine). Some of you may know that MS has never supported a remote .pst file. However, this sort of configuration is not uncommon in the Enterprise due to the ease in which .pst files can be baked up on the server. Also, I was still running the "Win98-2002" .pst file format.     - Desktop Files on Server? I have no idea what has happend but its become quite a problem. A few days ago, I used remote desktop to connect to our server (terminal services) and upon connecting I noticed all the icons/files from my local machine's desktop were now on my desktop of the server. I minimize the session to see that the icons/files that I had on the server desktop are now on my local machine's desktop. As if they were now mirrored. Not thinking too much about it, I went back on the server and deleted the files so that only my server desktop items remained. Upon logging off and returning to my local machine I noticed now that my normal desktop icons were gone from my local machine. I looked everywhere for them but they were completely gone. I have heard of sharing Printers and Drives with remote desktop, and those settings can be turned on and off. But I do not see anything about my desktop.     - Notebook Power Management This is my first notebook PC, an HP Pavilion with Vista Home Premium, and I'm trying to figure out the quirks of power management as related to sleep & hibernate. In the advanced power settings, one setting says (for example) to sleep after 30 minutes and another says hibernate after 90 minutes. I understand the difference between sleep & hibernate, but my questions are these: 1) This means that after 30 minutes of no activity, it will go into sleep mode. So then after another 60 minutes, is it supposed to automatically "wake up" and go into hibernate mode? This does not seem to be happening. 2) If I put it into sleep mode by closing the cover, should it transition to hibernate after the 90-minute period? My theory is that it keeps waking up from sleep mode due to scheduled events, and that's keeping it from going into hibernate. I also have seen that there are ways that the notebook can wake up from sleep mode. In fact, I think it's hard to keep it from doing this since there's always some software that wants to check for updates over the network or whatever. But is there a way that it can be awakened when it is hibernating? Hibernate is pretty much the same as powered off except for the memory contents being saved to disk. As far as I know, the only thing that can then wake it up would be the BIOS, but I don't see any settings in the BIOS that might allow this (I know that the network interface can do this for systems that are remote-booted from a server).     - this one will make you think.... ok I have a dell inspiron E1505 1G ram core duo vista home premium whenever I play halo 2 and I'm done,I exit and after I exit windows media center opens.but it bugs me because it takes about 2 minuets after I exit so the prosesers are maxed at 100% as it tries to start up. now this problem started about 2-3 days after it was installed. ps I don't want to uninstall media center it because I use media center for movies and media player for music. Right-click on Computer and select Properties. Look for "Service Pack 1"
under Windows Edition.

Or you can type "winver" (without the quotes) in the search. That will tell
you if you are running SP1.
