    - Protected Process I would like to change the CPU scheduling priority of a protected process. To be specific: Windows Audio Service (the isolated process), to Real-time. Is this possible and how? If necessary, I can program a custom service or modify any registry setting if any available related to the CPU priority. Or is it possible to completely disable the isolation - I don't care if this will break any advanced audio functionality - If I can play MP3's, that would be enough for me. The reason for this is because my computer drops audio samples when I move windows or start programs (especially Task Manager or any other programs using high CPU priority).     - Cannot delete certain files I have a problem thats only getting worse on my computer... It wont let me delete certain files.... its on my desktop and a couple other folders. when i try to delete i it wont let me saying the file is in use by another program but i check tasks and I dont se wich one... It seems to be all files that are when organized by type ar application.. but its only the applications that when i right click go to properties then program tab it shows a ms dos icon most applications i right click go to properties dont even have program tab but these select few that do i cant delete.     - Security Issue with Vista's 'Audio Endpoint builder' Hello. I was tracking down why my *svhost.exe* (used for internet & network Connections) was being used to access a whole bunch of Picture files in one of my folders. Files that were not being used by any other program or service at the time (not even the File Manager). It was running _under_LocalSystemNetworkRestricted_mode_ and i tracked the PID to the "'-Windows Audio Endpoint builder-' (http://tinyurl.com/6nbez6)" Service. I used the resource monitor to see that the WAEB was accessing numerous files in various folders. _What_stood_out_was_my_personal_pictures_it_was_accessing_. I looked the service up and in no way is it dependant on or is depended on by any system except AUDIO on the computer. However according to a company that deals in computer security (and Microsoft) it is a service launched by the legitimate 'C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe' program. The actual executable file for the Windows Audio Endpoint Builder service is 'C:\Windows\System32\audiosrv.dll'. Now this 'service' was reading my picture (JPG) files in the Public folder that has no system files in it. *Can anyone explain why an Audio Support DLL is interested in my Pictures?* As well as other files. I saw mention of this service having something to do with the System Indexing Serice as well in my search results when trying to find information. If it is related to indexing then why is it interested in NON-AUDIO files at all? if the indexer uses 'Associated With' executables to 'read' files for indexing then it should be using an audio processor to deal with audio files and an image processor for pictures, etc -- right? My concern is that it is being used as a backdoor or such to _grab_files_for_a_third_party_. Though I cannot find that this file sends data beyond my machine, it may process it for another program which would. As yet i cannot find anything suspicious on the outgoing side.     - Black Screen When Resuming Hi, I'm having an intermittent problem where upon resuming after a sleep or hibernate, the computer is displaying a black screen. Fortunately, the field where I need to type my password is visible with a white background and the cursor is also visible in it, but everything else is black. After I type in the password and press Enter, the horizontal middle third of the screen gets the Windows login background while the rest is still black. The problem disappears once my wallpaper is displayed. Any idea what might be causing that? I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 and all available updates have been installed.     - Customize Explorer Initialization Hi experts, Hope someone out there can help me with this one... I am using Vista and this question is about the Windows Explorer (NOT IE)... I work in my Windows Explorer a lot. Normally, I access my Explorer by: Right Click Start>Explorer. That's just fine. But, when my Explorer opens, it ALWAYS opens to a file drilled way down into the system. I don't want that. I have a file directly on my Cdrive that I always want it to (default) open up to... not to some extraneous file Windows think I should be in. So, in summary, when I open my Explorer, I want it to open/show C:\avi's files. NOT some Windows thing like Users\Files\blah\blah\Start... etc etc. Some time ago, I was sure I remember SOMEWHERE in Windows you can set the default view or default opening-folder in your Explorer (and it wasn't a difficult or technical task). When I configure the advanced settings to make the computer go into either the hibernate, hybrid sleep or sleep mode automatically after the number of minutes designated in the "settings", the computer remains in the full powered up mode after the number of minutes designated. My BIOS allows for two ACPI global states: S1 or S3. I have tried both settings and neither seems to correct the problem. Any suggestions on how I can get my computer to go into a reduced power state automatically after a designated number of minutes?     - Vista Destop Background! I run a double monitor setup side-side. What would really give me some Wow about Vista is having the ability to mirror the image on the second monitor about the vertical axis. This would make all of my cool background images I have taken with my camera look so much more professional. The mountain on the edge of one monitor would have the exact mirrored mountian on the edge of the next monitor. Cool! Cool! Please! You could probably do it under Display Settings with another checkbox under each monitor. That way I might be able to flip it again if I ever get a third or fourth monitor.     - IE7 - Vista - Java Snot OK Now Folks... this is the most peculiar situation I've encountered to date with Visa/IE... Here's what I've done and here's what's going on... I'm trying to access NOAA radars with IE7. NOAA radars are Java applets... An example can be found here: http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=PBZ&product=NCR&overlay=11101111&loop=yes I updated Java to 1.6U7 and applets have subsequently failed... so I... Uninstalled all versions of Java Deleted the Java folder under Program Files Reset ALL of IE7 to defaults... inlcuding the master reset to defaults (made sure activex controls, jre, etc. we're reenabled) Rebooted Downloaded and installed JRE 1.6U7 using the manual java installer (with AV disabled and run as administrator) NOW... Java applets (including NOAA radars) work fine in FireFox for ALL USERS Java applets (including NOAA radars) work fine in IE7 in ANOTHER USER (not admin) on this same computer Java applets (including NOAA radars) DO NOT WORK in IE7 for MY (admin) user on this computer CONCLUSION... there is something "user specific" in either IE or VISTA or JAVA that's blocking this funtionality... If I only knew what !!!!! AND BY THE WAY... if I turn of User Account Control (UAC)... the problem goes away... Where's the bug ??     - re-installing vista hi, i bought a vista-ready PC 18 months ago, and have been using XP since then. but when vista came out, as part of agreement when i bought my PC i was sent a vista CD. i upgraded to vista a few weeks ago, but i've been having problems with anti-virus softwares, i've tried about 5 now (separately) and they all create problems with IE anyway, since then i keep now getting error messages, things like "host process not responding so it is shutting down" and lots of other things not responding so shutting down. so i wanna reset my PC to way it was a few weeks ago when i had fresh installed vista... can i do that with these upgrade CD's? The dialog has been wide ranging-folks consistently want performance to improve (of course). As with many topics we will discuss, performance, as absolute and measurable as it might seem, also has a lot of subtlety. There are many elements and many tradeoffs involved in achieving performance that meets everyone's expectations. We know that even meeting expectations, folks will want even more out of their Windows PCs (and that's expected). We've re-dedicated ourselves to work in this area in Windows 7 (and IE 8). This is a major initiative across each of our feature teams as well as the primary mission of one of our feature teams (Fundamentals). For this post, I just wanted to frame the discussion as we dig into the topic of performance in subsequent posts. Folks might find this post on IE8 performance relevant along with the beta 2 release of IE 8. Performance is made up of many different elements. We could be talking about response time to a specific request. It might mean how much RAM is "typical" or what CPU customers need. We could be talking about the clock time to launch a program. It could mean boot or standby/resume. It could mean watching CPU activity or disk I/O activity (or lack disk activity). It could mean battery life. It might even mean something as mundane as typical disk footprint after installation. All of these are measures of performance. All of these are systematically tracked during the course of development. We track performance by running a known set of scenarios (there are thousands of these) and developers can run specific scenarios based on exercising more depth or breadth. The following represent some (this is just a partial list) of the metrics we are tracking and while developing Windows 7: Memory usage - How much memory a given scenario allocates during a run. As you know, there is a classic tradeoff in time v. space in computer science and we're not exempt. We see this tradeoff quite a bit in caches where you can use more memory (or disk space) in order to improve performance or to avoid re-computing something. CPU utilization - Clearly, modern microprocessors offer enormous processing power and with the advent of multiple cores we see the opportunity for more parallelism than ever before. Of course these resources are not free so we measure the CPU utilization across benchmark runs as well. In general, the goal should be to keep the CPU utilization low as that improves multi-user scenarios as well as reduces power consumption. Disk I/O - While hard drives have improved substantially in performance we still must do everything we can do minimize the amount that Windows itself does in terms of reading and writing to disk (including paging of course). This is an area receiving special attention for Windows 7 with the advent of solid state storage devices that have dramatically different "characteristics". Boot, Shutdown, Standby/Resume - All of these are the source of a great deal of focus for Windows 7. We recognize these can never be fast enough. For these topics the collaboration with the PC manufacturers and hardware makers plays a vital role in making sure that the times we see in a lab (or the performance you might see in a "clean install") are reflected when you buy a new PC. Base system - We do a great deal to measure and tune the base system. By this we mean the resource utilization of the base system before additional software is loaded. This system forms the "platform" that defines what all developers can count on and defines the system requirements for a reasonable experience. A common request here is to kick something out of the base system and then use it "on demand". This tradeoff is one we work on quite a bit, but we want to be careful to avoid the situation where the vast majority of customers face the "on demand" loading of something which might reduce perceived performance of common scenarios. Disk footprint - While not directly related to runtime performance, many folks see the footprint of the OS as indicative of the perceived performance. We have some specific goals around this metric and will dive into the details soon as well. We'll also take some time to explain \Windows\WinSxS as it is often the subject of much discussion on technet and msdn! Here rather than runtime tradeoffs we see convenience tradeoffs for things like on disk device drivers, assistance content, optional Windows components, as well as diagnostics and logging information. We have criteria that we apply at the end of our milestones and before we go to beta and we won't ship without broadly meeting these criteria. Sometimes these criteria are micro-benchmarks (page faults, processor utilization, working set, gamer frame rates) and other times they are more scenario based and measure time to complete a task (clock time, mouse clicks). We do these measurements on a variety of hardware platforms (32-bit or 64-bit; 1, 2, 4GB of RAM; 5400 to 7200 RPM or solid-state disks; a variety of processors, etc.) Because of the inherent tradeoffs in some architectural approaches, we often introduce conditional code that depends on the type of hardware on which Windows is running. On the one hand, performance should be straight forward-use less, do less, have less. As long as you have less of everything performance should improve. At the extreme that is certainly the case. But as we have seen from the comments, one person's must-have is another person's must-not-have. We see this a lot with what some on have called "eye candy"-we get many requests to make the base user interface "more fun" with animations and graphics ("like those found on competing products") while at the same time some say "get rid of graphics and go back to Windows 2000". Windows is enormously flexible and provides many ways to tune the experience. We heard lots on this forum about providing specific versions of Windows customized for different audiences, while we also heard quite a bit about the need to reduce the number of versions of Windows. However, there are limits to what we can provide and at the same time provide a reliable "platform" that customers and developers can count on and is robust and manageable for a broad set of customers. But of course within a known context (within your home or within a business running a known set of software) it will always be possible to take advantage of the customization and management tools Windows has to offer to tune the experience. The ability to have choice and control what goes on in your PC is of paramount importance to us and you will see us continue to focus on these attributes with Windows 7. By far the biggest challenge in delivering a great PC experience relative to performance is that customers keep using their PCs to do more and more things and rightfully expect to do these things on the PC they own by just adding more and more software. While it is definitely the case that Windows itself adds functionality, we work hard to pick features that we believe benefit the broadest set of customers. At the same time, a big part of Windows 7 will be to continue to support choice and control over what takes place in Windows with respect to the software that is provided, what the default handlers are for file types and protocols, and providing a platform that makes it easy for end-users to personalize their computing experience. Finally, it is worth considering real world versus idealized settings. In order to develop Windows we run our benchmarks in a lab setting that allows us to track specifically the code we add and the impact that has. We also work closely with the PC Manufacturers and assist them in benchmarking their systems as they leave the factory. And for true real-world performance, the Microsoft Customer Experience Improvement Program provides us (anonymous, private, opt-in) data on how machines are really doing. We will refer to this data quite a bit over the next months as it forms a basis for us to talk about how things are really working, rather than using anecdotes or less reliable forms of information.     - New Laptop to set up with Vista I just received my HP laptop,with Vista Home Premier 32bit, with no security on it (as I ordered it. So the first thing I want to do is get Avast and spybot on it,......right? I am just about to remove the software from the HP Photosmart. 1st question - before I network in the Vista Home Priumum should I take the Windows 98se off the network or doesn't it matter? 2nd question - Is Vista Home Premium security good enough for me to connect to the internet and download Avast antivirus or should I download onto disc and install via disc? 3rd question - Should I put a firewire cord on it before I do anything and back the whole system up on to my 1 TB backup drive? .........or onto disc??? I've only found one problem while making my usual web rounds: it has some serious problems with Google Groups. First: GG has to be run in "compatibility mode" or it won't even load (an IE popup tells the user to switch to that mode). but after that it's quite crippled once the tree view of a thread is shown.     - Various ways to escalate to admin I am confused as to when to use which method of privilege escalation and when. For example, there are at least 4 different ways to perform escalation and they seem to produce different results. I have an admin account defined and a regular user account that I do 99% of my work in. I am using Vista Home Premium, by the way. I have used the following methods at one time or another: 1) regular user executes a setup.exe program (for example) and receives a request to provide admin credentials 2) regular user executes a setup.exe program (for example) with 'run as administrator' and receives a request to provide admin credentials 3) admin user executes a setup.exe program (for example) and receives a prompt to approve escalation 4) admin user executes a setup.exe program (for example) with 'run as administrator' and receives a prompt to approve escalation The problem is, many times the results are different. Some program will work with one method but not another. I am not limiting this to just installs: it could be copying files or making directories, etc, etc. I would like to remain a regular user and supply admin credentials as required. But that doesn't always work. How does one know which method to use? I can't believe it's a trial and error procedure. Am I the only one confused here? What am I missing? What am I not getting?     - 56K modem settings I tried using TCP Optimizer to change the MTU setting for a Vista computer I was working on, but the modem did not appear in the drop down list of adapters. Only listed were the wireless and ethernet connectors. I moved the slider switch from 3000 to 56K and went to Optimal settings and saved, but the MTU of 576 did not take after the reboot.     - updates and driver problem I'm using vista business edition and I have three problems that have developed. 1) Updates automatically install in my computer. Recently my computer was on overnight with word 2007 (?most recent office version) open. At this stage I do not have my notebook eSATA ExpressCard so I hooked it up using the USB connection.
