Hello ,
If I were to "ditch" this computer and buy a new one, do I have to
re-register with new names, password and such, or can I retain my old
settings ?

It has nothing to do with this "forum", which is actually a newsgroup,
it has to do with whatever system you're using to get here. Your
"Newsreader" header says "vBulletin USENET gateway", whatever that is.
There is no registration needed for this newsgroup, no
account/password - at least if you access it on the MS server,
msnews.microsoft.com. I have no clue what vBulletin's requirements
are.

This "forum" you are using is nothing more than a web-based interface
that sucks up postings from the Microsoft newsgroups, repackages them,
and presents them to you as if they were doing you a service. It's a
very poor way to access the newsgroups, not to mention that you are
supporting what many of us consider to be a dishonest way of
presenting themselves.

Most of us here use the newsgroups directly, with our newsreader,
where no registration is required. I strongly recommend that you, and
anyone else using one of those forums, do the same. See
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm It's
about Outlook Express, but it's almost identical in Windows Mail,
which comes with Vista.

Hello Tim,
Like the other MVP said to me that I have a lot to learn about
internet. That is absolutely true. What I did was type in vista .com or
something like that in google search box, and eventually I was lead to
this. I was told to register as member if I wanted to post questions and
answers. So I did, giving my username, password, and e-mail address.
That's why I asked if I had to repeat the same process again. Thank you.

Hello Ken,
I have Microsoft Communities activated in my Windows Mail. Are they the
same as what you described "Microsoft Newsgroups "? I realise that at
least most of my posts reappeared in one of those MS Comm., but I don't
use them because I don't like the setup, ie. those (+) and (-), and most
important of all I'd like to be notified if I had a reply to my post(s)
which is not available there. But if that's not the same as yours, then
I'll have to ask my ISP for the name of NNTP , whatever that is. Unless
you can shed some light to this matter.Thank you.

Nahhhhhh.

There's no such thing as a primary location on Usenet. It's

This is primarily a newsgroup hosted by microsoft at the news server
msnews.microsoft.com. Like almost all other newsgroups, it is also
mirrored to hundred or thousands of other news servers all over the
world (including, but certainly not limited to, news.panix.com).

You can use any news server you want that carries the newsgroup, but I
recommend msnews.microsoft.com, since that's what most of us here use,
and will therefore give you the quickest access to posted messages.

From a practical standpoint, you have two main choices: use the server
Microsoft provides, msnews.microsoft.com, or use the news server your
ISP provides (if they do; ask them). Other news servers are available,
but some of them will charge you, and some others carry fewer
newsgroups or have restrictions on what you can do. There's certainly
no reason to choose any other than Microsoft's or your ISP's, unless
you also want access to newsgroups that you can't get on one of those.

don't get notified if I have replies on my threads. Who wants to scrol

Notifying you of activity in threads in which you are participating is
not a function of the news server, it's a function of the newsgroup
client you are using.

Some newsgroup clients can do this, but others may not. I'm using
Forte Agent here. I have it set to mark threads in which I'm
participating as "watched" and I have messages sorted to display
watched threads first.

Hello Ken,
I'm still "in the dark". When I " registered" in this Vistax64.com, I
have the option to notify me when I get replies on the threads I
participated. I was asked where to send the nitifications and I gave
them one of my e-mail addresses. So, this vistax64.com is a newsgroup
client ?

Not only are the "msnews.microsoft.com" groups "mirrored" on many
other NNTP servers, their actual "location" IS "msnews.microsoft.com",
which is HOSTED by Microsoft, NOT "Panix".

ANY non-Microsoft NNTP server it is "on" has a "mirrored" copy of the
ORIGINAL groups, which are kept on "msnews.microsoft.com"

If you don't believe me, NOTE the actual ORIGINATING domain:
"microsoft.com" That domain is NOT "panix.com". PERIOD.

That depends: Do you want to keep paying Panix for copies of the
actual newsgroups, or do you want to access them at their ORIGIN, for
FREE?

It's entirely up to you, friend.

in ANY case, PLEASE don't use a Web Reader to access these groups.
Get a decent NNTP client, like Agent. You will be happier, since it
will be MUCH easier to keep track of your posts and responses.

Again, that depends:

Do you want to use "msnews.microsoft.com"? If so, no
username/password are necessary. Just the "msnews.microsoft.com"
server address.

If you want to continue using panix.com, you will not need to change
usernames/passwords, although it IS advisable.

You will have to create an account on your new computer, no matter
what you do. But you won't have to create NEW login details, unless
you want to.

If you have a decent newsreader like Agent (or even Windows Mail) you
can just launch this URL to get access to the Microsoft NNTP server:
news://msnews.microsoft.com. It should add the account to your
newsreader. Then all you have to do is display the groups and choose
the ones you want to subscribe to.

NOTE that the above NNTP server ONLY has Microsoft's dedicated
newsgroups.

If you want non-Microsoft groups (there are well over 100,000 Usenet
groups), you will have to use a third-party NNTP server.
