    - I was wrong I have to admit. Vista rocks. After I had sex with mom and she fell asleep ( Ihad her tied down) I stole her copy of Vista and paid the kid next door to install it for me. My god I never knew my monitor was supposed to look so good until I booted up Vista. Er, the kid next door had to show me how to turn the computer on.     - vista slow to save Vista Home Premium Can't find the answer to this - probably because I don't know which key words to use. I have 2-3 apps that save files in 2-10 seconds just as all other apps do. But on occasion (about 50-70% of the time) these 2-3 apps take 15-20 MINUTES to save a file. If I try to kill these apps before the save is finished, I lose all my work. What could be causing this and what, if anything, can I do to resolve this?     - Windows Mail vs Outlook defaults in Vista hello - I am new to Vista. I have recently installed office on my pc and prefer Outlook. So I have been trying unsuccessfully to have the default be Outlook for when you go to "mailto" protocols. I see where I can change it in the "Default Programs" however under protocols where it lists "mail to" and I click on change program it only shows Windows Mail or Yahoo Mail as options and not Outlook.     - Vista won't boot after format of secondary drive I have a brand new computer (running Vista) with 2 drives - a 1 Tb SATA drive (C: primary), and a 320 G IDE drive (D: secondary). System booted up fine. I knew the IDE drive had errors on it, so I copied everything I could to the C: drive and re-formatted D:. Normal shutdown. Next reboot - all I got was the Microsoft "green line" for about 10 seconds and a black screen. Safe mode showed it stopped at CRCDISK. What happened? Vista was pre-installed and I supplied the 320 G drive. Did the format delete something off the D: drive that Vista was expecting? Reliable sources say to disconnect the D: drive and everything should work fine. If so - can I reconnect the drive and assume normal operation? Thanks for any help. mf.     - NETWORKING PROBLEM I have: A new Dell desktop with VISTA home premium. An old desktop with XP SP3. Two laptops with XP SP3. All access the internet through a router. The internet connection is working. The 3 XP machines were home networked and had file sharing between them. That network still works. I have tried to add the new Dell Vista computer to the network. The Dell recognizes the 3 XP computers and can take shared files from them. The XP machines do NOT recognize the Dell Vista computer or the printer attached to it.     - unable to join to the domain with netbios name Hi I am unable to join my Vista business machine to a windows 2003 domain using netbios name, FQDN is fine. Netbios resolution is working as I can browse the domain and use net use to map network drive on all DCs within the domain. Also, all Windows XP machines can join to the domain with netbios name. Netbios over tcpip is enabled and IPV6/local firewall is disabled. All client machines are on the same subnet. No WINS is used on the network. The error message is: An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed. We have a new CIO who has issued a directive that all (or most) apps should have earned the Microsoft 32 bit logo compliant seal. There was a whole list of apps when XP was around, but we are all upgraded to Vista Business. He says: "The the Microsoft 32 bit logo compliant seal on the box assures people and companies that the programmers have followed Microsoft standards when designing their apps. Using compliant apps that follow standards makes for a crash free environment." Where did they move the list to? I can only find a hardware list, not a software list. Is Sun Java logo compliant? I cant find anything on Sun's website that shows that they are. Sun is notorious for going against Microsoft standards. So, I used Easy Duplicate Finder http://www.easyduplicatefinder.com (protecting however system folders and other system files *.sys,.*ocx,*drv,*dll) and was quite surprised by the large number of duplicate files. But perhaps these duplicates are necessary? I noticed, that very often the same file, e.g. windows.edb, is located in two locations: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows and also in C:\Users\AllUsers\ Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows. Is it safe, to delete one of them? Or more general, is it safe to eliminate all thus identified duplicate files in windows vista home premium?     - Wake Up Problems Question about sleep/hibernate on desktop computer. When waking up from sleep/hibernate, sometimes the monitor will not turn back on. The computer will power back up but the monitor will stay off and the green light on the monitor just stays orange. We have to reboot from the start button.     - Task bar Notification Area problem I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Lately, the notification area of my taskbar is like a slot machine. There's no telling which of my icons will decide to appear there with a reboot. The latest antics are by the Network and Volume Control icons, Sometimes they appear, sometimes one or the other, and sometimes neither one. Also, when one or both of them are absent, the Task Bar options to display them are grayed out, so no help there. A reboot or 2 will usually get everything back, but it's an unnecessary hassle in my opinion. With XP, there was a small program called Task Bar Repair Tool that would quickly fix any such problems, rare though they were. Has anyone heard of something like this for Vista?     - When logging in, password box loses focus When the computer is locked and the screensaver is running, resuming does not perform very well. There are a couple of problems. First, when pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL, I do not always get the password prompt. Instead, it may just stop the screensaver, and I have to press CTRL-ALT-DEL again. Second, while typing my password, suddenly the password box will lose the focus. I could be halfway through typing when this happens. I have to click the password box and finish the password. ALT-TAB reveals two Windows Logon choices - one that works, and one that appears to do nothing, which is stealing the focus (or it appears that way). Anyone have any ideas? Screensaver is Aurora. I will try other screensavers to see if this makes any difference.     - Hyperlinks don't work I made a site using Publisher 2007 on my old laptop with IE7 and WinXP. Now I have a new laptop with the latest IE and Vista, and now some (not all) hyperlinks do not register as such when you mouse over, and there's nothing to click...     - Can't install any programs I had to replace the motherboard on my machine and had to reinstall Vista. After reinstall I installed all the drivers etc for the motherboard, downloaded and installed all the updates and tried to run the SP1 cd sent by Microsoft but I got the message that "Setup.exe has stopped working". I get the same with any program I try to install (using run as administrator). Any idea what may be causing this? Looks like the installation was not successful and I may have to start again but dont really want to do this unless absolutely necessary.     - Can't get NT Backup to work Hello I have put back the Windows NT Backup program in Vista so that i should backup, not just restore and I think I have tested it on a external USB drive. Now I try to do a backup using the NT Backu program to another USB drive. It quits after a couple seconds with th following error in the log Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:Catastrophi Failure. The external backup drive is a Seagate FreeAgent Pro USB drive and i contained some software from Seagate and Memeo which I have uninstalle from Vista What can I do to allow NT Backup to successfully backup to the Seagat FreeAgent Pro external USB drive?     - DRIVE LETTER QUESTION I have a new Dell computer (Vista) with a built in multi-card reader. The computer automatically assigns 5 drive letters to the reader, one for each slot. In all probabiity, I will never user 4 of those drives; at least for now, I don't own any relevant cards/sticks.     - Error messages I have a user who has Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit) and they keep getting an error, especially when trying to launch WindowsMail. There are two errors. The first is "C:\windows\AppPatch\AcLayers.dll is not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error...." The other is the same exact message, except for c:\Windows\system32\inetres.dll. Then it will pop up an error message stating that Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be loaded. I did some research yesterday and found that it is a known issue with KB935280 and uninstalling and supposedly reinstalling with the correct version would fix it. I uninstalled that hotfix and tried to reinstall the correct one, but it won't install saying that "The update does not apply to your system." Please advise how to fix this problem... Installing Windows Search 4.0 on Windows XP gives me a search box on
the task bar which I found convenient. But it doesn't appear on
Windows Vista. I know I can use the search field on the Start menu but
I think it will be more accessible on the task bar. Is there any way
to get the search box in Windows Vista, just like in Windows XP?

Not that I know of. Because Vista has the Start/search box, it doesn't need
an additional box in the Taskbar.
