I'm trying to move personal settings and folders from my old XP desktop to my
Vista laptop using the E asy Transfer Cable. I installed the CD-Rom that
came with the cable on my desktop and linked up the 2 devices but after
selecting the data I wish to move and it starts to scan, I immediately get an
"Windows Easy Transfer
has encountered an error and must close" message. I've tried a couple times,
each time attempting to move fewer files in case the problem was trying to
move too many files at once but the same thing happens each time.

I searched through the other responses on the board to see if other people
had the same problem as me, and while I see that it's a more common issue
than I thought, the exact problem and solutions posted don't really apply to
my situation. I'm hoping someone will be able to help me find out what, if
anything, I'm doing wrong and correct it. Otherwise I'm going to be very
annoyed to learn I spent money on this cable for nothing and have to use
another method for moving my data over.

You probably need to run the Windows Easy Transfer utility on the XP machine
to create the save, and then use it on the Vista machine to do the move.
