    - Toolbar shortcut doesn't work On the bottom toolbar is the Desktop Toolbar for launching programs. The MS Office programs will suddenly not launch when chosen!     - How to fix the Vista TASK SWITCHING ORDER -- badly broken/designed Why -- and how to fix -- is the Vista TASK SWITCHING ORDER so badly broken/designed? This is just driving me crazy -- under older versions of Windows you could trivially predict where a program would be in the task switching order, last program used 1st, previous next,etc. Now is is (sometimes) seemingly random -- other times in the older order. I do understand some concept of closing the window, or perhaps iconizing the program, that might put the task at the END of the switching order but this is not even what Vista does. It frequently will put the most recently used program at the end, OR near but not AT the end. Is there some registry setting to restore simply the old behavior?     - Memory Diagnostic results? Hello, I ran the Memory Diagnostics tool and after it completed and rebooted back into Windows, I didnt see any results. Where do you see the results of the test? I'm trying to diagnose this problem where my PC is rebooting at random, but I can't determine if it's a memory problem or not. So where can I find the results of this test?     - Noisy Vista I have a new Gateway system that I bought a few months ago and lately it seems that the hard drive is very noisy. When you go from one web page to another it sounds like a car revving up it's engine. I have some files to encode and when I do that, it just sounds like it's full speed ahead. Maybe its nothing but it scares me a little. Is this normal? And im assuming it's the hard drive, I guess im not really sure. Like a car revving up it's engine is the best way I can describe it.     - ASUS A8S-X Vista x64 I'm supposedly running RAID 1 in as stated in the BIOS but I have no way of checking this since I can't find the driver for this mobo. So I'm running RAID1 but I have no RAID utility tool so that if a disk failure occurs I don't even know how to rebuild the RAID. Furthermore, I got 4 GB of ram but it only detects 3.     - RAM Usage in Vista I have recently installed Vista Home Premium onto my P Dual 3Ghz PC. I have 3GB of RAM installed and was surprised to notice in Task Manager that 948GB in use, 2349GB cached and no free RAM. Whilst installing some software, I again checked Task Manager and noted that I had 10-20MB free whilst the install was happening. When it finished, it was dropped back to around about the same level but there was no free RAM, it was all cached again. Should all my free RAM be cached? Is the caching causing my machine to slow down (installing software does seem to be taking longer)? Can I stop Vista from doing this? Should I be worried about this?     - mailto link in web page a problem I have a webpage with a link like: mailto:someone@someplace.com In windows XP clicking this link activates mail client (Outlook in my case), allowing user to fill in the email and send it. The webpage containing the mailto link remains displayed in IE7 browser. Fine. In Vista, clicking this link also activates mail client (Windows Mail). However, it also loads mailto:someone@someplace.com into the IE7 browser address window, then generates message in browser window "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".     - Vista System Restore plus slowdown Hi folks, I'm running Home Premium n an HP laptop and up until yesterday everything was just fine. I also have SP1 and that went well. Yesterday, the system kept freezing or operating extremely slow and for the life of me I had no clue of what was going on. I had to press and hold the power button to shut down so I could reboot. I could not open Control Panel at all - the hour glass just kept swirling but nothing else would happen. After the reboot the system displayed the same behavior and at this point I noticed that it wasn't really locked up but in fact operating so slow that it appeared that way. After no luck with the obvious I checked the startup group - nothing there, I cleared out the temp folders and files which seemed to help. I decided to simply use a system restore to a previous state of a few days ago. The first time I did this, I got a message that Windows was NOT successful with the restore. I tried an earlier restore point and got the same notification that the restore was NOT successful but it appeared that it was. A program I installed after that particular restore point was gone and the system seemed to be better - that is my email and browser loaded quickly and ran as if all was OK. 1 - Has anyone run into this problem with such a gross slowdown (hourglass going on and on) 2 - What is going on with System Restore? I've used it in the past a few times on my XP machine but this was the first time using the Vista laptop. Any advice or comments are appreciated.     - ntfs partition formated with 16k clusters Can vista 32 pro install on an ntfs partition formated with 16k clusters. If so how can I format the drive to 16k clusters using the vista boot cd, are there any steps or commands I need to do during the boot sequence? And are there any "stable" third party programs or suggestions so I don't have to dump the current os that is on the drive?     - Built in mic problems in need of help! I have a dell inspiron 1520 with a built in mic i dont remember when exactly i started haveing this problem buts it been goin on for quite some time. my built in mic stopped working and it wont let me use it for any thing every time i go into the sound device menu and i go to recording devices its not there even with both disabled and unplugged checked. I have tryed reinstalling vista numerous times to fix this problem and they never worked. I have tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them.     - Vista can't update via WSUS: Error 80244019 My network uses GPO's to apply approved updates to XP & Vista Business boxes. For some reason, the Vista boxes are getting an 80244019 error. Currently Windows Firewall is set to OFF, and Windows Defender is still enabled. I've tried disabling both services as well and the error still appears.     - Second Life causes BSD on close-down Whenever I run Second Life (SL) and then close my PC (running Vista Ultimate) I get a Blue Screen of Death. If I don't run SL it's fine. I suspect that there is a graphics card issue. I'm using an nVida 6600GT card with proper drivers. Is this a known issue with Vista/SL/nVidia? Is there a cure? Cheers.     - Bluescreen: network file copy and shared printer connection Hello all, I've had a problem with Vista 32bit for quite a while now. This happened before and after Sp1. Basically, if I connect to a remote share and attempt to copy a file to the pc/server, i'll get a bluescreen after a few seconds. I can't remember the exact file referenced in the crash (I can recreate it and get it). This also happens when I attempt to connect to a shared printer. SP1 didn't make a difference.     - Vista 100% cpu usage after bootup / windows update I have 2 pc's running vista Home premium. As of the morning of 5/7/08, both of them are having an issue after bootup where cpu usage is near 100% for about 20-30 minutes. The computers are completely un-usable in this state. Looking at resource monitor(which takes about 10 minutes to load), both are showing svchost (netsvcs) PID 1456 at 100%. After this initial 20 to 30 minute lock up session, both computers seem to work fine. After investigating the issue a bit, it has something to do with windows update. If I go to control panel windows update, and try to update, the same thing happens. Not sure if this means anything but both computers have update KB940510 under the windows update control panel console, dated 5/7/2008. From researchign this update it is something to do with windows validation. Both PC's have OEM installs of vista, so I dont 'think' the validation is the issue. I know this isnt a hardware issue as one of the pc's is a HP laptop, the other is a Dell xps desktop. Both computers have had 0 issues before the morning of the 7th, and both have AV software and have had no signs of a virus. I have not installed anything on either of the computers lately. Neither share much of the same software beside antiviurs. (CA AV 2008) My xp and windows 2000 machines are working fine. Any help would be much appreciated.     - Creating ISO CDs with Vista Hi guys, first of all sorry for my english. I tried to burn an empty CD with Windows Vista (Ultimate SP1): in the "Prepare media" window, i selected "Mastered CD", then i copied some files to D (where D is the drive letter of my recorder), and clicked "Burn CD".     - Side Bar A very small problem compared to some of you here but........ I think the side bar is great - nice feature BUT why does it keep disappearing on my computer? It is there on the desktop when I first switch on computer and then when I open 3-4 windows and then click on the desk top icon and go back to desktop - it has disappeared! And yet if I minimize the windows and go back to desktop this way - there it is! It was pointed out that this is unlikely due to the overwhelming brilliant and costly staff who developed and marketed this costly venture. I am suggesting a more practical approach to this situation. Buy Apple. The message is clear. Big business is unbending in their approach to this software. The Lemming approach is in high gear. So for the Barack Obama movement in operating software to take hold, you need the candidate. Treasure your XP (A statement I thought I would never utter) and move to the most logical system available. Apple OS is bought in quantity will send a message to the bottom line that Microsoft recognizes, shareholder value.     - UAC and scripting What is Microsofts solution if you run vbscripts for administrative tasks and these are affected by UAC ? Swicthing UAC off requires a restart, once to disable and then once to enable UAC once script has finished running, which hardly makes the administrative change transparent to the user. Group policies are handy to do this, and was a good idea but the question is the restart thats required. You can turn it off completely and leave it off which sounds like the best idea, but I'm really curious about Microsoft's take on this ? There must be some big companies using scripts out there.     - Blocked Traffic My Security blocks the following traffic when comming out of SLEEP MODE. Windows Networking (1) out; IGMP Out: LLMNR: UPnP. This only happens on Vista and not XP with same programs Internet Security is F-Secure supplied by ISP Embarq. Only happens when comming out of sleep mode, not at restart or other times. Always the same 4 traffic groups. Embarq support does not know answer. Any help as to what it is or what to do whould be appreciated.     - New "C" Drive Hello, if i install a new drive, which is to be a replacement for a failing drive, can I get away with just copying the contents off the old one onto the new one, then installing that? I seem to remember something about MBR etc. How will Vista react if I do this, will it require reactivation? Will I have to reinstall all programs that are on the other hard drives?     - Vista SP1 question for an MVP please I have been waiting for Windows Update to offer SP1 and it has not happened yet. I am in no rush for SP1, but am beginning to wonder if it will ever be automatically offered. Should I continue to wait, or should I manually download it from the MS site.     - Application installation problem I'm posting this here because I can't get any solution from teh software company. I run and rely on Xara Xtreme Pro graphic software. I've used various versions for over 10 years and currently run v3.3 very successfully on my Vista Ultimate 32 bit machine. I get a number of errors at 99% install: these inform me that the files which reside in c:/program files/common files/xara are "not found". When I then try to run the installed program I get an "internal program error 2625.k.me.ps". If I then try to run v3.3 I get the same program error! To get back to a working version of v3.3 I've had to do a disk image restore. I've disabled my AV (AVG Pro), spyware (Spyware Doctor & Windows Defender) and closed WinPatrol for good measure (it monitors registry access attempts)... there is nothing there which I could imagine would cause a problem.     - Printing hang up If I send a acrobat, word or excel file to print, If i close the application before the printing progress dialog box reaches 100%, the process of printing hangs an I have to cancel printing.     - Move folders and remain source folder structure In Windows Vista (I have Home Premium) when we move a folder to another that has some sub folders or files with the same name, appears a dialog box asking if you want to replace, etc. But even if I choose to replace all, it remais the folder struvture, empty (it moved the files to destination), in the folder I just moved, and I have always to delete that folder structure in the end.     - Unable to open iTunes site. Internet exp. stops working and restarts My daughter has Vista and the computer is almost 1 year old. She ha always been able to access iTunes and has used it daily. All of th sudden iTunes stopped working correctly, we uninstalled it and now ca not even get on their site to try and reinstall because her interne stops working and restarts with no solution for the problem. Anti-viru is working properly, her internet has been restored and I think all o her updates are current. We are not having this problem with othe sites.     - New Language Interface Packs Microsoft has released new Language Interface Packs for Windows Vista. The LIPs can be applied to all Vista editions as long as the parent language is supported. These language packs are not Ultimate extras. Some restrictions apply to Vista Starter. Also, new LIPs have been released for the Office 2007 products. Hi, I am running Vista Business Edition I have a shared folder c:\share on my hard drive, and I mapped that to my z: Now from command prompt which is launched with Admin privileges, i am not able to run any application located in Z:. for example Z: \test.exe...It gives an error - System cannot find the drive specified. disappeared, and when I click on it, it says that Windows cannot find
C:\Program. How do I fix the icon and then correct the the connection
problem?

If it disappeared how do you click on it?

That error is usually caused by not having the path in quotes.

Vista Ultimate before and after installing Outlook 2007
- 13 items in the Welcome Center. Read and Write Mail is not one of them.
