    - Vista system restore I wanted to do a system restore back a few days when i tried i got thi error message "the disk Local disk (C: has errors" so it say check fo errors so i do and restart my computer it starts to check for error then it freezes at 1% or 3% i have tried to leave it but there is n progress for hrs. so i am thinking i have a much bigger problem tha just a system restore. I have been looking on this forum and i hav tried to run sfc/scannow a dos window flicked up for one sec but tha was it, so i am not sure what it did and now it can no long find ru sfc/scannow, next i tried to boot up and safe mode but that also froze i can boot up in normal mode if i bypass the the disk check witch i asks me every time i start now. i am in way over my head any help woul be wonderful or at least a indication on what the is going on would b great -- bearbrazee Tag: Vists won't shut down after SP1!     - Vista install issue on new system I am building a new system and have a new copy of Vista Home Premium 32bit. I got it all put together and tried to load Vista. It got to the Windows is loading files screen and then screen in getting black video. Keyboad and mouse stopped working at times. So I updated the board BIO's per intel through iso image and same thing. So I tried installing XP and got to the F8 screen to accept lic. and it just reboots everytime. Any ideas why Vista would stop? Added the info about the XP install so it may help.     - Odd Sleep/Hibernation I have an HP Pavilion HDX0910NR notebook running Vista Ultimate 64-bit. About 2 weeks it has begun doing something similar to hibernating. I can be using the computer without any issues and I will walk away from the computer for a few hours and come back and there is no HD activity, the screen is black and no matter what I press on the keyboard or mouse the PC very rarely responds. On the rare occasion it does only the screen will come back on and I can choose to open windows but they never open. After a few clicks I still get mouse movement but nothing responds. I had done a recovery in January because of some other issues but this just started 2 weeks ago. I have verified all of my power settings and nothing is set to turn off or spin down or go to sleep. HP even had me remove the performance setting entry in the device manager and reboot but that didn' work. I'd like to avoid a reload if possible. If it helps with a diagnosis, I leave Live Messenger running on that notebook at all times and i can see it signed in at work and after a few hours it signs out at home.     - Pen drive/USB flash drive showing as floppy disk I am running vista premium and have a problem with the USB flash drive I have. Recently it has been showing up as 'floppy disk' (even though I don't have a floppy disk) and so now despite the 4GB memory it will only accept very small files, preumably it thinks it only has the memory of a floppy disk.     - Automatic Backup - filled my D: drive and now wont backup anymore I have a Dell notebook with Vista Home Premium. The Hard drive came partitioned into the C: drive and D: drive (a 10GB recovery partition). I set Automatic Backup to create backup files on the D: drive, and it worked fine. However, the backups filled the D: drive within a few months and now when backup runs I get a message saying that the backup failed because there isn't enough space on the D: drive.     - How change from dual boot to single boot Vista? XP is on 1st primary partition [active] and is old. Vista is on 2nd Primary partition and is new. Dual boot info, I believe, is all on the XP partition. Soon I will want to go to Vista only. Do I just delete the XP partition (after imaging it, of course!) and set Vista partition to active? (Paragon Partition Manager) Will it then automatically boot into Vista (which has no boot.ini)?     - Ref: Donating old PC Hi folks ! I got to wipeing the hard drive with dban. This is the exact message I get when it is finished. Dban succeeded. All selected disk have been wiped. Remove the Dban boot media and power off. Saving log file to floppy disk saved/floppy/dbanlog/dban.0004.tyz. Dban finished. Press enter to save the log file. When I do that it says insert boot disk. It goes no futher. So I ran Dban on autonuke, got the above message when it finished (2 HR). With out powering off I put in a blank floppy and hit enter. Then I got the following, dbanlog/dban0003.tyz. Then it said hit enter again. I did this and got up to 0114.tyz. I got tired of hitting enter, so I removed the floppy. I put in the recovery CD that came with the PC. I then got a message that says "out of memory" What am I not doing right? This is driving me nuts. I am retired so I got the time to play around. I don't want to put any money into the old PC (8yrs old).     - **Windows explorer has stopped working.** It seems MS has a major problem with this, as I too am getting this error, then it corrects it's self. In my case: Newly built PC running Vista Home Edition.... All the latest Vista drivers..... Checked for the "Digital locker" problem in the faqs and don't have it... Ran Norton (latest updates) no viruses or malware... None of the other posts under this topic seem to be the cause either... If anyone has found out something new might as well post here as I've tried everything short of emailing tech support and blowing my 90 days on one issue.... It seems to be in MS's best interest to produce software with bugs (although I doubt they do so intentionally), then charge for support...     - Post Vista SP1, Windows RE (Startup Repair) Hi All, I think I have an issue with The Startup Repair tool (RE) [1]. The problem is I cannot get beyond this tool, or it's desire to scan and reboot the system. I have gone through this cycle about 6 times now. The computer is a Dell Inspiron with a recevery partition (D:). I installed SP1 two days ago. Since then the computer has been rebooted about 5 times. On the 6th, all hell broke loose. I don't believe any changes have been made since then. Naively, I want to question how RE does not know how to work with Vista SP1. Perhaps RE is on the D: partition and was not updated?     - Resigned to wait for SP1 on my VAIO I have the (presumably) dreaded "problematic driver" issue on my VAIO VGN-430N/B Laptop. It uses the "stwrt.sys" driver noted as problematic on MS's website for SP1: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948343 (SP1 not offered by Windows Update). An updated driver is not available on Sony's website or on the MS Update website. I suppose the best thing to do is to wait for Sony to figure this out and put the update on their website or send it to MS for inclusion in the MS Update process. Apparently, after that is updated, SP1 will be offered. Funny, Sony support knew nothing about this issue. Told me to try defraging my drive and to try again... sheesh! Anyhow... that's my plan. It occurs to me that this may be a better plan than downloading the full SP1 and trying to "force fit" it into your system. I've read so many heartaches about trashed systems.     - Must broadband connection be pppoe? With Vista, I can get internet for my new Dell XPS laptop over the wireless connection without doing anything other than selecting the connection. No user name or password is needed. But to plug in directly into my cable modem, it does not work. Seems to require user name and password. But I use Verizon and a Motorola SB5101 modem and while it is broadband, I did not think it is pppoe. I don't even know of any user name or password for my account. Am I wrong, is all broadband pppoe? My internet connection works just fine without asking for pppoe login info when I use my desktop with Windows XP. So, it seems to Vista specific problem.     - i have a problem with vista. the problem is that i can't get vista to load. it has told me that winlog.exe is corrupt and that i need to run start up repair. the main problem with this is that windows won't start so i can't run the repair program i have ran the advanced boot options as suggested in the help and support options. i dont see the repair comp option. i have tried every other option, nothing is working. what do i do? and more importantly how do i do it?     - Vista Start button doesn't change the list of recently used progra what exactly am i doing wrong i want to change the list of recently used programs on my start button but when i restart my computer or whenever my computer turns on the list is resest to the original list that is first set by vista. this doesn't affect the way the computer runs its just an annoyance i would like to fix. if anyone can help me please respond, and so i say how i empty the list: right-click the program shortcuts in the start menu and click "remove from list". i also made sure that in the properties the two check boxes to keep a list of recently used programs and recently open documents are both checked. i hope someone knows what i'm doing wrong. thank you.     - can't get rid of Intel display driver The summary is that I'm having trouble getting rid of the Intel display driver that prevents Vista SP1 from installing. More details follow. I have an inexpensive Toshiba notebook, A135-4677, purchased from Circuit City in August, with Vista Home Premium. MS Update does not offer me SP1. For a while now, it has been offering me updates for the Intel video adapter and the Atheros network adapter. I have update set to advise me rather than update automatically. The display adapter is v 7.14.10.1322. I said OK and the install ended in a blue screen. I had looked away and never got to read the blue screen before the system restarted. The system seems to have restarted OK. I still have warranty. So, I called Toshiba. I was told these adapters are made special for Toshiba, I already have the latest drivers, and the ones MS update wants to give me are inappropriate. I wonder if this could be true. I was also advised that, if I want to get SP1, I should go for the manual download. I don't know about that either. Then I went to the Toshiba web site, found that they are serving up an OLDER version of the driver, 7.14.10.1132, downloaded it and tried the install. It terminated with the informative message, "an unknown error has occurred - setup will end." Even though things seem fine, I did a system restore to be safe. The question is, now what? I'm thinking I'll attempt the driver install once again in safe mode, but I don't know whether I want to go forward or backward. I'll probably call Toshiba once again, but I've decided to look elsewhere first. Previous calls to them on other topics haven't been all that productive. Can anyone who reads this help?     - Windows Update Preventing SP1 Update I received the Microsoft Download email and followed the link to read about SP1 for Vista. It recommends installing via the Windows Update site. Every time (and by whatever means) I try to access the Windows Update site the Vista Windows Update tool dives in and tells me that there are no updates available. I am sure I would know if a 65MB file had downloaded and installed but I could be wrong.     - RAID and Vista. I am running Vista SP1 and want to mirror the HDD in a RAID 1 configuration. I have purchased 2 HDD with the same specifications and copied the existing partition onto one of them. The system is booting into Vista well until I enable the on board nForce3 250 RAID controller and I get an error that it is unable to find an operating system. The RAID driver is installed under Windows and is recognised in Device Manager. I suspect it is an issue with one of the boot files i.e. boot.ini. Can anyone please shed some light on this? Thanks.     - Vista SP1 Remote Desktop Connection issue Just installed SP1 on Vista Business here at work and now we are unable to RDP to a Windows 2000 box that we use. Is there some new elevated privileges canceling this out that we can disable and go back to? Error: Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected. Please try connecting to the remote computer again. The server is up that I'm telneting too (we have XP machines that reach it fine) and I can telnet to it from the Vista machine.     - [SP1] Success Story Well, After a long debate with myself, I went ahead and downloaded SP1 for my old system. I had installed a new Logitech camera that was using the Lv???.exe driver or something. Anyway, unplugged the camera and deactivated the Logitech programs in the startup for all users. Installed SP1. Rebooted. Came back after several hours. Re-Attached the USB devices. Everything works. For the moment, I have the Logitech entries still DISABLED in the startup.     - Drops Network when large file copied to PC Ok here is a rather bizzar problem and I am hoping to eventually solve it without hopefully having to reinstall the OS. I have a media center running Vista Ultimate (upgraded from Vista Home Premium about 6 months ago), this problem has been occuring for about 4-5 months. If I try to copy a large file over the network to the media center by initiated the transfer from another PC the media center will drop off the network and I have to either disable and reenable the NIC or restart the PC both have the same effect of bringing it back on the network. Now the odd thing is I can copy the file just fine if the transfer is initiated on the media center. I have tried disableing the Kaspersky antivirus, there is no firewall running and the windows firewall is turned off, upgrading the NIC drivers, upgrading the ATI chipset drivers, and have upgraded to Vista SP1, all with no apparent effect on my problem. Any help is appreciated, I may contact MS support if no one has a suggestion because I really don't want to have to do a clean install of Vista on it, though that may be where I am headed. Right click on Computer and choose Properties.
On the left choose "Advanced system settings".
On the Advanced tab click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Uncheck "Automatically restart".

Next time instead of restarting it should show a blue scream. Give us the
error information from that screen.
