Vista temp or unecessary files

Where exactly are all the temp/unecessary files I could delete from the
system? I am running low on disk space on partition C (35 gb total) and I
need to install a big program now.

I performed a clean install of Vista Ultimate 4 days ago and after
installing all the programs I have, 1.1 gb is all I have left. I have a 4gb
swapfile for 4gb RAM, have already deleted files/dirs in C:\USERS\MY
NAME\APPDATA\LOCAL\TEMP and C:\WINDOWS\TEMP. Are there any other files I
could delete? Since I applied all the updates, including SP1 and office
2007, are these update install files kept on the hard drive? Are they
"deletable"?

I could repartition my hard drive and give Vista more space, but this is the
last thing I want to try.

Run Disk Cleanup from the Accessories menu. You can safely delete temp files
from there. Alternatively, you can use a third party tool like Ccleaner. It
will do a more thorough job, particularly with temporary files from third
party apps.

Move user files to a different volume/disk, if you can.

When you are positively sure you will not need to uninstall SP1, you can
clean out unused, but stored update files. Open up a command prompt as
administrator (right-click the command prompt icon in Accessories). At the
prompt, type "vsp1cln" (without the quotes).

You should seriously consider it. 35GB on a system partition with many "big
programs" on it is a bit on the low side, especially if you store your user
files on the same partition.

once completed you can not uninstall SP1.

Ok, did Disk Cleanup and I freed about 5 gb ;) Mainly Hibernation files
(which I don't use) and Memory Dump files.

Tried the "vsp1 cln" (without the quotes) command and it said command not
recognized. Did you mispell it? I don't really think I"ll ever uninstall SP1
so these files could be deleted, I guess.

My 35GB partition is for Vista ONLY. All my files, documents, media, pics,
videos, etc are kept in other partition. All my programs are redirected to
another partiotion and drive C (Vista) keeps only the required DLL's and
Common Files. Considering all this, maybe 35 is indeed a good amout of space
for it, isn't it?

Again, what's the command to delete update install files from DOS?

TMA,

Be sure and examine both tabs of Disk Cleanup (run Disk Cleanup as
Administrator to see both tabs and if you are confident in your most recent
system restore, then choose the button to delete Restore Points).

A good approach is to download and use on a regular basis CCLEANER for
Piriform.

CCleaner is probably the most widely-used and popular utility.

Also, you should very seriously consider an additional hard disk and putting
as much as you can there because, if already you are running short of disk
space, then you are headed towards a wall.

You can turn off restore points to free up disk space. Goto Control Panel:
System: System Protection.

Nope, but there is not supposed to be a space between "vsp1" and "cln".

It depends on how much space the third-party programs occupies. I can not
say what is best for you, personally I have set 50GB aside.

Also keep in mind that even if you can cram all you need into one volume, it
is still a necessary to keep a bit of spare room to allow programs to
copy/write/cache/shuffle around their files. I would say 10% at least.

Did you mean other than "vsp1cln"? (see above). Other update files can be
removed in Explorer, if you wish to do it at all. It is risky and does not
free up more than 40-80MB at best. The files are located in:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution

Consider limiting the disk space of system restore points instead. Open up a
command prompt as admin, and type "vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=C:
/For=C:: /Maxsize=xx" (without the quotes).

Replace "C" with your system drive letter (if it is not C). Substitute "xx"
for whatever amount you want to allocate. The Maxsize parameter takes both
MB and GB suffixes. By default System Restore is allowed to use approx. 15%
of the disk space. Do leave room for multiple restore points though, each of
them require approx. 300MB.

"the same" refers to what?

As another indicated, you can delete all restore points by deselecting the C
drive in the System Protection tab, Available Disks area of System
Properties (Start|type SysDM.cpl to get to System Properties). After
deleting all, then you can create one and that will give you the one
fall-back restore point.
