    - change sound for email I found a .wav that I like and want to change the sound for my email. I added the sound to the file where the "New Mail Notification" sound were. I've change the sound under the "New Mail Notification" in the list and I couldn't get the sound to work so I had to change it back to the original sound. Im fed up reading posts about how MS has sold 140 million liscences of Vista, trying to feed us the notion that somehow vista is actually a successful product. Lol.... can some idiot vista fanboys eat this sh!t? They actually think vista is selling because its good? Give UBUNTU the monopoly for one and a half year, meaning that it will be PUSHED on new computers for 18 months like vista has, and guess what? 140 computers will have ubuntu! Then guess what? Suddenly all big software houses will have ported their apps to work on ubuntu! But lets make some thing clear... 140 mill licenses that MS claims does not mean that there are 140 million computers actually running vista-crapista. Nope, many dual boot with xp, and forget about vista, many format vista and install XP, many just hate their new vista computer and use their old XP computer to do actual work, many got the upgrade anytime vista license and never upgraded! (those are the smart ones) People who cannot think, have limited perception of reality, or just plainly believe what they want to believe (LIKE DORK FRANK the biggest idiot of this newsgroup ever), JUST GIVE ME THE CREEPS! Just think of this: If these people can eat whatever they are told, and actually become fanboys of lies, what OTHER FALSE THINGS do these people believe?     - Download Complete - Window does not close (VISTA Ultimate SP1) Has anyone had any problems downloading files and having the download window never closes? Steps to replicate: 1. Open Web Page 2. Select File to Download 3. Watch the file begin to download 4. Download screen will say "Verifying" 5. The download gets to 99% and it never closes.     - how to access alias::* from anywhere. To illustrate my question i'll just give the scenario i'm facing right now. I'm using uTorrent and would like to enter as default download path something in the lines of "%downloads%\P2P\" or "shell::downloads\P2P'". Obviously none of these is the correct one and my question is, what is the correct way to use the shell folders from applications, command prompt and autohotkey scripts.     - Can't preview pictures on desktop anymore Hi, For some reason I can no longer preview computer pictures(bmp, jpg, gif, etc)that are on the desktop. Normally, by double clicking the images would open up Windows Photo Gallery. Now nothing happens. Double clicking in folder's in my computer still work, just the desktop seems to be having this issue now. Even if I right-click and choose preview or 'open-with'. It's very ood. I tried setting Windows Photo Gallery as the default program to open these images files with hoping it would fix the problem, but it didn't work Any help fixing this would be greatly appreciated!     - No s on streaming audio or video Darndest thing. I don't get any sound when I try to stream something, either audio or video. This happens with both Firefox and Internet Explorer. On the other hand, I get sound when playing anything on my hard drive, and I get all system sounds. I've tried diagnosing the connection -- it's fine -- and everything looks like it should.     - Background Vista Sidebar Does anyone know whether it's possible to change the background color or transparency of the Vista sidebar? After first installing Vista, it was entirely transparent, but then became (and still is) a gradient, going from transparent on the left to almost entirely black on the right. Quite frankly, this looks horrible and makes you think there's something wrong with the screen. Anything but a gradient (i.e., image, colored background, or fully transparent), would be a 1000 times better.     - Vista question about "compatibility mode" and "safe mode" Hi, my problem is I'm trying to run a program which can only run under two conditions: 1) Can only run under windows XP. 2) Needs to run in safe mode to work correctly. I can solve the first problem by simply runing the program under compatibility mode (so it thinks its running under XP SP2). but the problem is that in Safe Mode I can't use the compatibility mode because the option is greyed out.     - Cannot Rename a New Folder Recently I have found that I cannot rename a "New Folder". I can create a New Folder OK, but when I right click and select Rename, then the newly typed name reverts back to "New Folder" and I get the error message "File Does Not Exist". I can rename the folder OK through a Command Prompt window, but not in Explorer. I have tried "taking Ownership" and "Running as Administator", with UAC turned off, and again with UAC turned on. No go. I have read several threads from people with what sounds like the same problem. All seem to come down to a corrupt registry entry in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\EXPLORER\FOLDER_DESCRIPTIONS. I have tried to fix this as advised in http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/130137-cannot-rename-move-file-folder-vista-fix.html, by downloading a file; Fix_Rename_32_Bit_Vista.reg and merging it into the registry by right clicking This does not work either. Any ideas please. I am running 32 bit Vista Home Premium. Not a Vlite installation. I cannot perform a repair install as I do not have a Vista Install Disc - the pc came pre-loaded with Vista, with the install files hidden somewhere (in the BIOS ?). I really don't want to start from scratch with a clean install - it takes days to reload all software and get all settings back to where I want them.     - Vista Won't Sleep Ever since I got Vista Ultimate a bit over a year ago it was very reluctant to enter sleep mode; it would manage that maybe one in four tries. This is on a Gateway fX530XV with a 24 in gateway monitor. I recently installed SP1 and it has absolutely refused to go to sleep. When that choice is clicked on the monitor goes dark and very shortly the orange standby light comes on. The hard drive light quits flashing and the system will accept no inputs at all. I have to use the power button to turn it off and then during restart I have to click on "Start Windows Normally" to avoid a period of apparent self checking, then it goes on to the user page and then to a chosen desktop. I would like for it to access sleep so as to return to where it was when paused, as well as having a quicker restart. Comments would certainly be welcome.     - Windows Update and Norton Internet Security 2008 I have a laptop runing Vista (no SP1) and am having problems running Windows Updates on the machine. I have run Windows Update on this machine in the past. I recently had to uninstall and reinstall NIS 2008 on this laptop. Now when I run Windows Updates, it produces the following error: -------------------------------- Windows could not search for new updates Error(s) found: CODE 80072EE2 The only option is to "Get Help". Clicking on that shows 25 Windows Updates, all with an error and error code. The error code 80072EE2 details provides the following instructions; Add the following websites to your firewall exceptions list; - http://*.update.microsoft.com - https://*.update.microsoft.com - http://download.windowsupdate.com ---------------------------------------- I have a message on the Symantec support forum. But wanted to see if anyone here have add websites to NIS 2008's Exceptions list? I know how to add IP Addresses to the Trusted List, but this does not appear to be the area to add these sites.     - Using Black wall paper locks up computer I recently switched my Vista Home Premium computer to using black for the wallpaper. Bad idea. The next time I booted up, nothing would run.     - csrss.exe in winsxs I saw somewhere that there are versions of csrss.exe which are malware. The posts said that versions of csrss.exe that are not in the windows/system32 directory are probably malware and should be deleted. I did a search of my harddrive and found that there are in fact two versions of csrss.exe, one in the windows/system32 directory and another burried deep within the windows root directory. The file is the only file sitting in this directory: C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-csrss_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_none_58e3e3d7e415ae4c I tried to rename the file to see what happens but Vista told me that I didn't have permission to do that (gotta love Vista!).     - Track at once with Premium 32-bit When one inserts a blank DVD to backup some file for example, Vista asks the write process is "track at once" or "disc at once". I choose "track at once" since I want to write more than once, 'til the disc is full. However, the next time I insert the same disc, Vista does NOT ask me anymore. This is just driving me crazy -- under older versions of Windows you could trivially predict where a program would be in the task switching order, last program used 1st, previous next,etc. Now is is (sometimes) seemingly random -- other times in the older order. I do understand some concept of closing the window, or perhaps iconizing the program, that might put the task at the END of the switching order but this is not even what Vista does. It frequently will put the most recently used program at the end, OR near but not AT the end. Is there some registry setting to restore simply the old behavior?     - Noisy Vista I have a new Gateway system that I bought a few months ago and lately it seems that the hard drive is very noisy. When you go from one web page to another it sounds like a car revving up it's engine. I have some files to encode and when I do that, it just sounds like it's full speed ahead.     - ASUS A8S-X Vista x64 I'm supposedly running RAID 1 in as stated in the BIOS but I have no way of checking this since I can't find the driver for this mobo. So I'm running RAID1 but I have no RAID utility tool so that if a disk failure occurs I don't even know how to rebuild the RAID. Furthermore, I got 4 GB of ram but it only detects 3.     - RAM Usage in Vista I have recently installed Vista Home Premium onto my P Dual 3Ghz PC. I have 3GB of RAM installed and was surprised to notice in Task Manager that 948GB in use, 2349GB cached and no free RAM. Whilst installing some software, I again checked Task Manager and noted that I had 10-20MB free whilst the install was happening. When it finished, it was dropped back to around about the same level but there was no free RAM, it was all cached again. Should all my free RAM be cached? Is the caching causing my machine to slow down (installing software does seem to be taking longer)? Can I stop Vista from doing this? Should I be worried about this?     - mailto link in web page a problem I have a webpage with a link like: mailto:someone@someplace.com In windows XP clicking this link activates mail client (Outlook in my case), allowing user to fill in the email and send it. The webpage containing the mailto link remains displayed in IE7 browser. Fine. In Vista, clicking this link also activates mail client (Windows Mail). However, it also loads mailto:someone@someplace.com into the IE7 browser address window, then generates message in browser window "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".     - Vista System Restore plus slowdown Hi folks, I'm running Home Premium n an HP laptop and up until yesterday everything was just fine. I also have SP1 and that went well. Yesterday, the system kept freezing or operating extremely slow and for the life of me I had no clue of what was going on. I had to press and hold the power button to shut down so I could reboot. I could not open Control Panel at all - the hour glass just kept swirling but nothing else would happen. After the reboot the system displayed the same behavior and at this point I noticed that it wasn't really locked up but in fact operating so slow that it appeared that way. After no luck with the obvious I checked the startup group - nothing there, I cleared out the temp folders and files which seemed to help. I decided to simply use a system restore to a previous state of a few days ago. The first time I did this, I got a message that Windows was NOT successful with the restore. I tried an earlier restore point and got the same notification that the restore was NOT successful but it appeared that it was. A program I installed after that particular restore point was gone and the system seemed to be better - that is my email and browser loaded quickly and ran as if all was OK. 1 - Has anyone run into this problem with such a gross slowdown (hourglass going on and on) 2 - What is going on with System Restore? I've used it in the past a few times on my XP machine but this was the first time using the Vista laptop. Any advice or comments are appreciated. If so how can I format the drive to 16k clusters using the vista boot cd, are there any steps or commands I need to do during the boot sequence? I have a dell inspiron 1520 with a built in mic i dont remember when exactly i started haveing this problem buts it been goin on for quite some time. my built in mic stopped working and it wont let me use it for any thing every time i go into the sound device menu and i go to recording devices its not there even with both disabled and unplugged checked.     - Vista can't update via WSUS: Error 80244019 My network uses GPO's to apply approved updates to XP & Vista Business boxes. For some reason, the Vista boxes are getting an 80244019 error.     - Second Life causes BSD on close-down Whenever I run Second Life (SL) and then close my PC (running Vista Ultimate) I get a Blue Screen of Death. If I don't run SL it's fine.     - Bluescreen: network file copy and shared printer connection Hello all, I've had a problem with Vista 32bit for quite a while now. This happened before and after Sp1. Basically, if I connect to a remote share and attempt to copy a file to the pc/server, i'll get a bluescreen after a few seconds. I can't remember the exact file referenced in the crash (I can recreate it and get it). This also happens when I attempt to connect to a shared printer. SP1 didn't make a difference.     - Vista 100% cpu usage after bootup / windows update I have 2 pc's running vista Home premium. As of the morning of 5/7/08, both of them are having an issue after bootup where cpu usage is near 100% for about 20-30 minutes. The computers are completely un-usable in this state. Looking at resource monitor(which takes about 10 minutes to load), both are showing svchost (netsvcs) PID 1456 at 100%. After this initial 20 to 30 minute lock up session, both computers seem to work fine. After investigating the issue a bit, it has something to do with windows update. If I go to control panel windows update, and try to update, the same thing happens. Not sure if this means anything but both computers have update KB940510 under the windows update control panel console, dated 5/7/2008. From researchign this update it is something to do with windows validation. Both PC's have OEM installs of vista, so I dont 'think' the validation is the issue. I know this isnt a hardware issue as one of the pc's is a HP laptop, the other is a Dell xps desktop. Both computers have had 0 issues before the morning of the 7th, and both have AV software and have had no signs of a virus. I have not installed anything on either of the computers lately. Neither share much of the same software beside antiviurs. (CA AV 2008) My xp and windows 2000 machines are working fine. Any help would be much appreciated. I tried to burn an empty CD with Windows Vista (Ultimate SP1): in the "Prepare media" window, i selected "Mastered CD", then i copied some files to D (where D is the drive letter of my recorder), and clicked "Burn CD".     - Side Bar A very small problem compared to some of you here but........ I think the side bar is great - nice feature BUT why does it keep disappearing on my computer? It is there on the desktop when I first switch on computer and then when I open 3-4 windows and then click on the desk top icon and go back to desktop - it has disappeared! I am currntly running Vista with SP1. I can connect to my WebDAV folders but
when I try to double click on a folder inside the Explorer window it doesn't
work. I would need to Right Click on the folder and select Explore in order
to open the folder. When I try to double click to open a Word document it
doesn't work, so I must also right click on the document and select Open.

Is there a setting some place that I should be looking at?

How are you connecting to your WebDAV folders(OE, WLM[if you used an iaf file to import an account], Outlook Connector, web UI)?

Through the Add Network Wizard, Choose a custom network location, and type
in the webdav address.
