    - The case of the missing CPU cycles This has happened about 4 times now since setting up this brand new quad-core Vista Ultimate PC. There will be nothing running on the system, yet the CPU utilization shows 30-40%. However, the task manager (even with "show all processes from all users") shows nothing using the cpu, other than maybe dwm at 1%. The resource monitor shows the same. However, all four CPU cores are doing something. Visually inspecting the disk shows little or no activity, so it's not vm thrashing. The dwm is slow and lagging -- if I try to open up a command window and drag it, it is slow to redraw. If I type characters into a command window, the keystrokes lag. My suspicion is that it is one of the drivers (probably the graphics driver) that is consuming these cpu cycles, yet Vista is failing to account for it in the process table. I'm using an nvidia 8800GTS video card. Anyone else experience this problem? Does anyone know a way to "reboot" just the graphics subsystem (i.e. restart the video drivers while Vista is running)? This is an like introduction, if you are seeking how to use and deploy the registry keys with Vb.net, just see the next tutorial (It'll be tutorial 6). In this tutorial I'll show what is the windows registry system and why use it. Project details: 1- What is Windows registry and why use it 2- How to read, write and change the registry 3- HIVES and their use 4- Definition of registry values 1- What is Windows registry and why use it. You can compare the Windows registry to a database. It stores informations related to Windows and other installed application on your system, but also Hardware. Think now if someone need to change the computer name via programming. How can he do this? Programmers can think of files (text files) to store the computer and windows information. But when file get big and heavy, Database will be more secure. And then they had (Windows builder) the choice of a database "Windows Registry". Microsoft Dot Net Frame 1.1 and higher have implemented a great solution for registry on their classes. This will replace the hard work and long lines of code that programmers have to write if they are using Visual Studio 6.0 for example. 2- How to read, write and change the registry Windows has a wonderful tool on it, named "Registry Editor". But you won't find it, unless you open the System32 folder on the Windows folder. But we can easily run it through the execute command it the start menu. Just type "regedit" (without quotes). Now the registry editor will open. Please before doing any changes on your registry make a backup. To do a windows registry backup: File > Export > Give a name for the file and select the All option box. The backup may block your pc from working for a short period of time. You'll see that there are 5 folder. Those are the main folder (named hives) and you can't add another main folder. Now you can select any folder and right click on it, then add a new sub-folder or value. By selecting any folder and right clicking, you'll find a list of action that you can do. If the action is blended (made not selectable), then either it's impossible or you don't have the rights to do this action. You need administrator rights to change registry keys. 3- HIVES (main registry folders) and their use The registry is split into a number of logical sections named "hives", those are the top main folder that can added, edited or renamed. They all start with "HKEY" prefix. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Stores information about registered applications, such as Associations from File Extensions and OLE Object Class ID's tying them to the applications used to handle these items. HKEY_CURRENT_USER Stores settings that are specific to the currently logged-in user. The HKCU key is a link to the subkey of HKEY_USERS that corresponds to the user; the same information is reflected in both locations. On Windows- NT based systems, each users' settings are stored in their own files called NTUSER.DAT and USRCLASS.DAT inside their own documents and settings subfolder. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Abbreviated HKLM, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE stores settings that are general to all users on the computer. On NT-based versions of Windows, HKLM contains four subkeys, SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE and SYSTEM, that are found within their respective files located in the %SystemRoot% \System32\Config folder. A fifth subkey, HARDWARE, is volatile and is created dynamically, and as such is not stored in a file. Information about system hardware drivers and services are located under the SYSTEM subkey, whilst the SOFTWARE subkey contains software and windows settings. HKEY_USERS Contains subkeys corresponding to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys for each user registered on the machine. HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG Contains information gathered at runtime; information stored in this key is not permanently stored on disk, but rather regenerated at boot time. 4- Definition of registry values Binary Value REG_BINARY Raw binary data. Most hardware component information is stored as binary data and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format. DWORD Value REG_DWORD Data represented by a number that is 4 bytes long (a 32-bit integer). Many parameters for device drivers and services are this type and are displayed in Registry Editor in binary, hexadecimal, or decimal format. Related values are DWORD_LITTLE_ENDIAN (least significant byte is at the lowest address) and REG_DWORD_BIG_ENDIAN (least significant byte is at the highest address). Expandable String Value REG_EXPAND_SZ A variable-length data string. This data type includes variables that are resolved when a program or service uses the data. Multi-String Value REG_MULTI_SZ A multiple string. Values that contain lists or multiple values in a form that people can read are generally this type. Entries are separated by spaces, commas, or other marks. String Value REG_SZ A fixed-length text string. Binary Value REG_RESOURCE_LIST A series of nested arrays that is designed to store a resource list that is used by a hardware device driver or one of the physical devices it controls. This data is detected and written in the \ResourceMap tree by the system and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value. Binary Value REG_RESOURCE_REQUIREMENTS_LIST A series of nested arrays that is designed to store a device driver's list of possible hardware resources the driver or one of the physical devices it controls can use. The system writes a subset of this list in the \ResourceMap tree. This data is detected by the system and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value. Binary Value REG_FULL_RESOURCE_DESCRIPTOR A series of nested arrays that is designed to store a resource list that is used by a physical hardware device. This data is detected and written in the \HardwareDescription tree by the system and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value. None REG_NONE Data without any particular type. This data is written to the registry by the system or applications and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value Link REG_LINK A Unicode string naming a symbolic link. QWORD Value REG_QWORD Data represented by a number that is a 64-bit integer. This data is displayed in Registry Editor as a Binary Value and was introduced in Windows 2000.     - WMI Provider Host stopping Hi; I've got four brand new dells. All running Vista Business; all now with SP1. And all of them with the same problem - a box pops up and tells me that the "WMI Provider Host has stopped working". Don't know what it does; but it'd been like this for about a week. I hoped that SP1 would sort it out, but I downloaded that last night, and it's no go. There's a hotfix for this very problem on Microsoft's site - I've installed it, to no avail.     - Endless loop Yesterday an auto update from microsoft was downloaded by my laptop (Gateway- Vista Home Premium) After the download to finish the installation the coputer rebooted..... When it gets to the blue welcome window a message (more or less)- "stage 3 update 0% complete" appears- after 10 minutes the computer shuts down and repeats the above...... over and over for hours. If I try booting it in safe mode- same problem If I get the 'auto fix' screen- it reboots several times but ultimately the same problem... How can I stop this? What can I do to correct it..     - Reinstall of Vista Hi there, I have an OEM version of Vista Ultimate (32Bit), and want to perform a clean install onto a larger harddrive. When I set this machine up, I had a little 80Gb drive, with two partitions ( 20Gb C:, and 60Gb D:) -- Vista was installed on C:... I am now running out of space on this drive. I am not changing computers, just upgrading the hard drive ( 250GB with one partition ). Will I need to reactivate Vista, and will there be any problems doing so?     - Dual Vista installations, 64bit installation can't see 1st hard drive Computer: Dell Inspiron 1720, 2.4 Core2Duo, 4GB RAM, 2 internal SATA disks. 1st hard drive, from the factory with Home Premium, single NTFS partition. 2nd hard drive, installed Vista x64 Ultimate, single NTFS partition. When booting to the 1st drive, Home Premium can see both disks and all partitions as expected. However, when booting to Vista x64 from the second disk, it becomes "C:" and does not even acknowledge the first hard disk is even in the machine. The only other problem is that the 64-bit installation doesn't keep the laptop as cool and is noticeably warmer/hotter. Aside from these 2 issues, Vista 64 runs well. TIA, Mike Tag: Uh-oh!     - Never say never, at least not for drivers I was being repeatedly prompted to install a driver that I didn't actually have access to at the time so I clicked on the setting to never be prompted again for this device. Now, I want to be prompted again. How do I get Vista x64 to go back to prompting me for the driver for this device?     - Blue Screen Errors I, too, am plagued with BSOD. I have a Dell Dim E521, purchased about 10 mos ago. Dell's answers have been everything from driver updates (which don't work for the machine problems) to restoring to factory setup, which doesn't work for me. Stripping away all of my useful programs may be an answer, but not the right answer. Dell is going to call again today. I think these are the same guys I talk to when I call HP support. So far I've communicated with half the male population of India. I'm no computer geek (and don't intend to spend 10 hours a week to become one), but have been involved in analytical trouble shooting all of my life. My take is that these BSOD posts represent less than 5% of the BSOD problems being encountered with Vista. The actual problem is way too widespread to be blamed on hardware. If Microsoft really wants to get to bottom of this, you need to start asking better questions to find the commonalities, i.e. Virus software, device drivers, usage patterns, etc., and stop worrying about stepping on the toes of various software providers. Otherwise we'll all just continue grasping at straws, and the favored target straw is as varied as the number of techs. The shotgun approach of uninstalling everything but Vista would give me 100 GB of disk space that I would never use, and reduce my machine to toy status. If all I can do is email & web surfing, I don't need a computer. I'm way too busy using applications to be taking the time to be re-installing. -- Harry Tag: Uh-oh!     - Vista Boot Failure - never gets to login Hi, I have a 3month old PC - clean installed with Vista Home Prem OEM. As of 8 days ago will not finish booting - simply ends with a mouse pointer on a black screen (pointer moves when mouse is moved). Have tried - everything - full memory diagnostics, chkdsk /r, System restore (found no restore points), all SAFE modes, Last good config. In place upgrade is disabled as it is an OEM build. Intel P35 chipset MB, E6850 CPU. No new hardware installed. No bug check codes displayed (no blue screen). Was fully up to date with WU, and drivers - and was running well since built. It is as if the profile is corrupt - but there was no indication of a problem. If this was Win XP I would do a Repair Install. Obviously no way to do that in Vista. This was before SP1 came out this week. The drive has been fully scanned for virii and spyware (HDD added to a clean working system and scanned), came up clean.     - USB devices in Vista 64 Home Preimum Hello. I have vista 64 home preimum installed. Now in the begining USB devices worked fine, you put them in and vista reckonises them as per all the drivers pre installed (as XP was) But then my mate came round with his mobile phone that acts as a memory stick too, it would reckonise his phones memory stick, so i downloaded the software for the phone and that seemed to work using the phones software.     - Running Power Point 2003 in Windows Vista Premium Home I have been using this set up for almost a year. Today Power Point 2003 started closeing constantly!     - Looking for Utility to Repair vista bootloader? I trying to dual boot with xp, & part of this process involves having a vista cd to repair the bootloader. But my computer only came with Restore cd. So I am looking for a utility program to fix the bootloader (instead of using vista cd to repair it). I posted this on a different group: I bought a Gateway computer ( http://tinyurl.com/2x5uwa ) with vista, but it only comes with recovery CD not the original. I was following the instruction as per this website http://tinyurl.com/3xepar. So I installed xp successfully. Now at this point I should be putting the vista cd and select repair to fix the bootloader. But I only have the restore cd. I tried putting it in. The first screen it gives me does not have the vista option. Instead it's a Gateway recovery screen. You have two options, do you want to run from disc or from small recovery partition on the hard drive.     - Windows not booting properly Hello, My computer is using Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit, and as of now it's really hard to turn on my computer. It began yesterday, I turned my computer on and it would crash in the middle of loading up Vista. It usually freezes at the part where you are told how much ram your computer has but has also frozen in various other parts while loading and is irritating me since most of the times it never boots properly. I often get into a black screen asking me if I want to enter safe mode or go to Windows normally. Sometimes, after turning it on and off in an attempt of trial and error, I can somehow manage to get it to work as it did now as I'm typing the message. Nonetheless, The only thing I can give you guys about this is: 1. I got an error once on a black screen that specified me that the /windows/system32/ntkrnlpa.exe "kernel is missing". 2. Another time I got in a blue screen with lots of information in it but what seemed to be the highlight of everything was the file "ntfs.sys". 3. Sometimes, when I turn on my computer, it freezes and makes a never ending beep. Anyone know how can I fix this or do I need to send my computer to maintenance? Tag: Uh-oh! For some reason, everytime I start my computer, I get a box saying Windows needs to install Divice Driver for NVIDIA GForce 6150...     - Which external HDD is compatible with Vista x64? I am trying to find an external hard disk drive that is fully compatible with Vista x64. I purchased a Western Digital My Book Premium II drive and it doesn't work properly even though their web site states that is Vista compatible. I contacted them and they fairly ridiculed me for assuming that that meant it would be compatible with 64-bit Vista. I can still use the drive to actually copy files to but there is no 64-bit driver so the bundled software doesn't work and Vista keeps telling me that it needs to install a driver for this device. I don't trust that statement after my experience with the WD drive. Well, folks, the honeymoon is over. This annoying
problem is definitely an OS issue.

T7700 (Core2Duo), 4GB, Vista Business with SP1, and it's
been mighty fine!

Since installing SP1, when I right-click a desktop icon,
I'll sometimes get the spinning blue ring leading to
Explorer failure (followed by self-recovery). It's
inconsistent, and I don't know what conditions are
required to replicate the problem.

Any ideas from the experts?

OK - thanks! I downloaded that tool and will give it a
try. My son is still young enough to know everything, so
