My start menu and all icon are missing. Comp starts up fine and when you
click anywhere, everything goes missing. i have to start task manger to run
everything. i have tryied everything from a system restore to last known good
configuration. please help

You will probably need to create a new user account. The profile is damaged
in some way. You can try copying the old settings to the new account in the
System app in control panel.

How does a user account get damaged. plus will all my files be accessed with
the new account?

In addition to system restore, you might also try a system repair from
the Vista DVD. This may or may not help your situation. I would also
