I have a strange problem where some of my applications listed on the list of
recently used programs (seen when clicking the start button) won't launch
when clicked. I thought it was only Microsoft Office applications but today
I noticed Adobe wouldn't launch.

For those apps that don't launch, I have to go to All Programs and then find
the application. I have never seen or heard of this before and hope there
is an easy fix.

I just upgraded to Vista Enterprise edition and have MS Office 2007
installed along with VS 2008, SQL Server 2005, etc.

Thanks,
Jason

I have the same problem. Outlook will come up but Word and Excel will not
come up from the start menu. If you get any answers please let me know.
Thank you!!

Yeah, that's weird... have you looked at the property settings for the
entries on the recently used programs list? Have you tried right clicking
and using "run as administrator?" Not saying that either is an answer...
just trying to find out why those shortcuts don't work while the "regular"
shortcuts in All Programs do...

Yep, looked at the properties and they are exactly the same - pointing to the
same shortcut location. its driving me crazy - i don't understand why some
programs will launch while others won't.

when i right click the program, there isn't a run as administrator option.

Bob, I was able to get the "take ownership" added to the context menu. I
don't think that is the solution to my problem though. But I did notice
that when I right click the programs in the list of my recently opened
programs, those that will open have a different contect menu than that of the
ones that don't. The programs that will open have a "run as administrator"
option where as the programs that won't open do not have this option (among a
few others).

Well... sounds like something's messed up... I get the "run as
administrator" option when right clicking on "recently run" icons in the
Start menu... No answer, I know... sorry.

Did you really need to include the entire thread in your post simply to say
you don't have an answer?

Please snip irrelevant portions when replying ESPECIALLY if you're bottom

I'm having the exact same problem, Vista Home Premium. It has been this way
ever since the day I installed almost a year ago. I have searched many times
but always found a handful of other people having the same problem, and no
official answer.

Basically, most 'recently-used' program shortcuts do not work in the first
level of my Start menu - some of the shortcuts do work. The ones that work
have a right-click menu that includes 'Run As Administrator'. The ones that
do not work have a shorter right-click menu that includes 'Remove this item'.

Shortcuts under 'All Programs' always work.

I removed all not-working shortcut items from the Start Menu and then ran
the programs again from 'All Programs'. Predictably, another non-working
shortcut appeared in the Start Menu first level.

It is mainly the MS Office apps that are affected, but also 'iTunes'. The
shortcuts at the first level that DO work include Notepad, Calculator, and
Remote Desktop Connection. Note that these are all simple applications!

Is the problem something to do with the sophisticated non-working icons
being 'AppIcons' (a term I'm dragging up from my Amiga days) meaning that a
document may be drag'n'dropped onto the Microsoft Excel icon to launch the
program, and perhaps this type of icon is not compatible with the Start Menu?
Any way to switch the AppIcon feature off, or to fix it so it works with the
Start Menu?

I'm clutching at straws but then, I've had a year to think about it ;)

Thanks,
-Alex

This problem has been driving me mad too, but reading this thread gave
me an idea for a work around as follows:

Manually create a shortcut on the desktop for the application you want,
in this case iTunes.
Right click the desktop, new, shortcut, Location = "C:\Program
Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe", click Next, change name to iTunes.

Now on Start Menu and open Computer. If you haven't already, use the
Organize menu to change your Folder and Search Options so that you can
View Hidden Files and Protected System Files.

Now in the address bar of Computer, go to
c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\iTunes

Delete the existing iTunes shortcut.

Continue through the Vista security questions.

Now cut the shortcut that you created on the desktop and paste it into
window that you have open in which you just deleted the original
shortcut.

Close the Window.

If you have a non-working shortcut on the Start Menu, delete it now.
This is important as the next step creates a working icon only if there
is not one there already.

Then on the Start Menu, Programs, go to iTunes and click on the iTunes
shortcut. iTunes will open.

Wait 10 seconds or so, then close iTunes.

Check your Start Menu, there should be a new icon for iTunes, click it
and - Voila! - iTunes opens.

Why this works, I don't know, but I am now going through my Microsoft
Office folder on my start menu and replacing all the shortcut icons with
ones that work.

I have the same problem. Here's a hint someone might find useful in
solving it:
Applications that won't open from Start Menu in Vista:
right-click the shortcut > Properties > Shortcut Tab > Advanced shows
"Run as administrator" grayed out.
Applications that will open from Start Menu in Vista:
right-click the shortcut > Properties > Shortcut Tab > Advanced shows
"Run as administrator" available (though the box is not checked).

I'm assuming some setting is disabling the option to run the program as
an administrator.

On my Vista system:
- Explorer, Internet Explorer, Adobe Photoshop all open ok.
- Microsoft Office Word 2007 and Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 won't
open. (I only recently installed Microsoft Office).

Can anyone solve this?
