Why would you want to?

I agree that one would want to Rename the icon and remove the words Shortcut
to, and make other edits to shorten the name of the icon, but the little
arrow tells you that the icon is actually a shortcut that can be deleted
without disturbing the underlaying program. If you go around from time to
time deleting Desktop icons, it would be a disaster to delete an icon that
was actually the .EXE file. Deleting a shortcut is a problem that is very
easy to recover from, deleting the EXE is another matter entirely.

A small utility called WinBubble can do this for you among other things.

My strong recommendation is that you do *not* do this. The arrows
serve an important function--providing quick visual identification of
a shortcut. If you remove the arrows, you run the substantial risk
that sooner or later you will delete something you wanted to keep,
thinking that you were just deleting a shortcut to it.

I agree. I've never understood the obsession some people seem to have about
shortcut arrows. They are there for a good reason.

Hi Larry,

This tutorial will show you how to remove or change the shortcut
arrows, and how to remove the "Shortcut" name prefix from being added to
every new shortcut created.

It is what Tweakui is for. I hate the arrows and always have. Then again, I
don't keep exe files on the desktop.. :-)

Hi Larry,

I agree with Ken, Jeff and Bob, however if you insist you can always shorten
the name and add "sc" at the end of the original name to insure you know
what they are and not mistakenly delete the wrong icon.

Kelly's Corner has the required solution for XP. It may work with Vista too.

Hi P. Jayant,

Oh no. Do not use the XP method for replacing the shortcut arrow in
Vista. It will mess things up with the shortcut overlay. This free
program here is a much safer and easier option to use.

I don't keep exe files, or anything but shortcuts, on the desktop
either. But rather than that eliminating the danger, I think that
makes it greater. If once in a blue moon, you *do* put something other
than a shortcut on the desktop (perhaps even by accident), because
it's so unusual, it makes it that much easier to forget and
accidentally delete it, thinking you were just deleting a shortcut.

But neither you nor the OP has to agree with me. I made my point and
gave my advice. Larry can decide for himself what to do.
