    - dial-up status I can no longer click on my dial-up connection short cut to see network status(i.e. line speed) as I was able to do in the past. When I look at the connection in "Manage Network Connections" of the "Network Sharing Center", that dial-up connection shows a status of "connecting" instead of "connected" making me believe that some final aspect of the connection is not completing (although the connection does work).     - HP recovery manager I've been given a HP laptop running Vista. There are no discs to install the operating system. You are advised to create recovery discs using the HP recovry manager before you do anything else. You can only ever create one set of recovery discs, so you have to get it right first time. The re-seller has already installed some applications, which I don't necessarily want to re-install with the operating system. I'm worried that the HP recovery manager will include these in the backup. I don't see how the recovery manager can distinguish between programs like Internet Explorer, which is part of the operating system, and Firefox, which isn't.     - Narrow Internet Image To whoever might be able to help, I just changed from a 7920 HP to a m9250f HP. When I open an internet page, the image and text are limited to either the center 3rd of the screen or all the way to the right or left. Everything else, tool bar, address bar, ect., are fine and go all the way across the screen, but the image is shrinken to about a 3rd. The background colors are also fine.     - PROGRAM DATA folder suddenly missing, START menu shortcuts don't w Have been using this HP Pavilion laptop successfully for almost a year now, when suddenly the Start menu shortcuts to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint don't work. You click them and nothing happens. Careful investigation (right-click the menu option and look at Properties) shows the General tab, Location as: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Office. Problem is... the ProgramData folder is gone. Disappeared into thin air. Not even in the Recycle Bin. That is annoying on its own. BUT... what else was in the Program Data folder that is now missing also? Grrrr. I have been a Technical Trainer for 20 years, but can't figure out this one. Can anybody help?     - Reports: Intel to skip Vista upgrade FYI . . . http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-9977911-56.html For any given release of Windows, there are companies that choose to skip it. But when the company is Intel, it's a big deal. Following a report Monday on the Inquirer, the New York Times reported Wednesday that Intel's IT department "found no compelling case" for upgrading. Ouch. And that's despite the fact that it's been nearly seven years since XP debuted. It's not a good thing, if your customers are electing to stick with 7-year-old technology. (In fairness, XP did get a fairly big update with Windows XP Service Pack 2, but even that is four years old at this point.) Microsoft, which once predicted businesses would adopt Vista at twice the rate they moved to XP, has scaled back its ambitions and these days talks a lot about how long the adoption curve is for businesses when it comes to new operating systems.     - In Vista programs fail to connect to network but IE7 works every t When launching various different programs, Windows Live Mail, Quicken, Some MS installs etc fail to connect to network stating some wording similar to "you must connect to the Internet first or an Internet connection does not exist." If I click retry three or four times the program will usually connect. If IE7 is opened IE7 will work each time without error, and browsing is normal. Opening IE7 then trying to connect on one of these programs doesn't help. The computer also has XP on it and if I am in XP, these same programs work flawlessly. Quicken for example is the 2008 version. I installed Windows Live Mail last night and it is doing the same failure to connect two or three times then it connects. I have reset IE7 as the default browser, the firewall is turned off, I have turned off AVG, TCP V6 has been disabled, I've hard coded the IP and DNS etc, run as admin, made my self admin, turned off the user account control, nothing has solved this problem. Has anyone seen this and come up with a solution. FYI - I work as a network admin for about 1500 computers and this one has me stumped. Especially as it is my own computer running Vista Ultimate.     - From Windows Vista to Server 2003 Enterprise Hi, I am currently running Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1. Because I have had so much difficulty with my development and server software (Visual Studio, IIS, Sequel Server, etc), I am considering changing over to Windows Server 2003 Enterprise. I have a few questions that I hope someone will know the answers to. 1. Will there be many applications that I can run on Vista that will not run on Server 2003? 2. Does a utility exist that I can run before installing Server 2003 that will let me know if my hardware meets Server 2003 standards? 3. Is there anyway to install Server 2003 without first having to completely formatting my current harddrive (i.e. would it be possible to install Server 2003 over Vista)? 4. This might not be the best group to post this question on, but I could not find a group for Server 2003. If anyone knows of a better group to post this question on, please let me know.     - Why does Vista Why does Vista sit there for ages after pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del , and entering username and passwords. Its just says "Welcome" with a spinny circle. 2-3 minutes later the desktop arrives! Nothing in the event log, same laptop with XP installed does the applying/loading personal seetings in about 10-15 seconds. Why does Vista when on the logon screen change the "Logon to" part from the domain the local PC name when i type "Administrator" in the box? Does not do it on any other account!, very annoying having to type domain\administrator on the main logon screen. Why does Vista take 4x longer to install anything than XP does on my laptop? XP installed the standalone flash player in less than 10 seconds. Minutes later i'm still waiting for Vista to get on with it. Why when i open our shared area thats on our 2003 server does Vista take more than 5 minutes to load it, when XP does it in less than 1 second? No matter which hardware i try Vista on, same result. I just purchased Money Essentials 2008. In the checkbook register it says Payee/cateegoy. When I had a newer version of money I got to pick the category off a list or enter it in.     - folder/file icons Hi All, I'm really sorry if I'm in the wrong place but I'm hoping that someone will be able to help me. I have a laptop with Vista on it and all my file/folder icons are a preview of what the file or folder contain. Such as if I have a .jpg file, the file icon is a preview of the picture. However... I have just bought a PC with Vista on and it doesn't show the preview it just shows the program icon, such as if I have a .jpg file and the default viewer is Microsoft Office Picture Viewer it shows the icon for that program and not the preview of the picture. I'm hoping this makes sense. I'm sure it's just a tick box somewhere but I can't find it anywhere. It's a pain not seeing the preview.     - Problem with Notepad of all things Suddenly when I try to open notepad, I get an error window saying: Notepad has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working.     - Not Responding Hi, i purchased a Latop last summer and bought the Vista Home Basic to install myself. Recently i've started to get a lot of programs 'not responding' it usually starts with Firefox/Limewire/Real Player and sometimes spreads to Windows Explorer/My COmputer. the laptop has 80GB hard drive and i recently purchased an external drive which has 250GB. I've ran every malware/spyware/anti-virus program, defragged the laptop countless times, run registry mechanic, and winzipped most of my photos/music but still the problem persists. i have uninstalled and re-installed Firefox/Limewire & Real Player but the problem persists, can anyone help???     - Vista 64 Ultimate - Blue Screen then - Boots to Black Screen After the recent Vista Updates last week i Noticed my PC was freezing. It eventually Blue screened on me. When I went to reboot it would only reach a black screen with the mouse pointer available and functioning. I have tried to enter via the various Safe Mode options but all lead to the same black screen. I have tried using the repair functions from my orginal disc but it suggests there are no errors and I can subsequently only get to the blank black screen with mousey. I placed all my HDs in a seperate machine running Vista Home Prem 32 and all were accessible except for the Hd that contaned my Vista 64. It appears in Computer as a Local Disk but Access is denied. The only way I can the see data in any capacity is when I attempt to apply security permissions to the disc. It applies permissions to all but a few files showing that the data is still on the disc. Any ideas ? I have previously repaired XP System Hives using the backup files and aftermarket command line software is there any other way I can repair this Vista as I need to clarify what if anything I stand to lose from this volume before I think of reformatting and reinstalling.     - File Transfer Manager and UAC... what am I missing? I've been trying to get the File Transfer Manager program to work with Vista SP1. The only way I can get it to work is if I turn off UAC. Otherwise I receive an error "Unable to open file on client". I found the "workaround" about creating a folder, but this doesn't work. I've tried both the ActiveX install, and manually downloading and installing FTM. (The manual download route doesn't work with UAC on or off.) Also with UAC on, the program won't save any settings. (Also turned off popup blocking), and the ActiveX settings in IE7 are correct. (Looked at during a tech support call). So, what am I missing? Gotta be a way to make it work with UAC on....?     - cannot open applications I'm having trouble opening my applications (.exe) files & shortcuts (.lnk) When I try to double click the following message occur: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an associaton in the Set Associations control panel."     - Sent messages not being received by some addresses After experiencing a problem with a 'locked" sending function, I rebuilt the message store of windows mail. Things worked fine - except it now appears some addresses are not receiving my emails. There is no indication to me they are not receiving them and the addresses are correct - but some receive my message and some do not. What is going on?     - Large file copies with SP1 Running Vista Ultimate with SP1 and having large file copy issues. If I attempt to copy a large file from my desktop to another device (laptop for example) across the wire the copy start but eventually the counter will stop moving and the window freezes. If I hit cancel it'll say cancelling but never quits. Once this happens the entire tcp/ip stack is dead and I can't connect to anything on the network. If I attempt to restart windows won't restart because it says it can't close the copy window. My only choice is to power cycle my desktop.     - Linksys tech support live chat transcript - enjoy!!!! I had a PC come across my desk that had Linksys drivers for a WUSB54G installed - but the install somehow failed. If you tried to uninstall the Linksys app pops up and fails to uninstall saying that some file (it doesn;t say which) is missing and the uninstall aborts. If you try and re-install, it says you can't reinstall until you untinstall. This would not be a problem except that the Linksys software is interfering with another adapter also that I tried to install to get away from Linksys hell. I even deleted all WUSB* from the Windows directories and all WUSB* registry entries that I could. The uninstall and reinstall both still fail. Frustrated as hell (isn't that how we all are when we contact technical support?) YOUR SOFTWARE UNINSTALL APPLICATION FAILS saying a file is missing and it does not tell me what file is missing\ Sunmay Jagtap (40437): If you fill that the Uninstall wizard on the adapter CD is not working , you can try it in some other computer . Jim: Then, as if that wasn't stupid enough, your software will not re-install without uninstalling - which your software won;t do because some phantom file is missing that it will not tell me what file that is.... I fail to see why a serial number is needed when you know the model and version of the product. I also fail to see how programmers could be so stupid as to code an app that will not uninstall because it is missing a file that will be deleted anyway during the uninatall AND to also fail to allow the reinstallation of the application - forcing an unistall which is not possible due to a missing file - which they are also too dimwitted to give you any clue as to the name of the missing file so that it could be replaced. If you face the same issue even with some other computer , you can have the adapter replaced as per the warranty status from our end , if your adapter is in warranty . Jim: When your software will not uninstall because it is missing a file and it does not say what that ffile is - that is a problem with your software. Jim: When your software will not overwrite the old install and forces an uninstall - that is a problem with your software coded by your coders. Jim: And why would it delete a file from teh device to unistall from my pc? Sunmay Jagtap (40437): Well, that might be the case . If the device is not there in the computer , how can the software get un installed if that software is not in use , as it will not respond properly . Jim: Because the damned files are still on the hard drive. Without the device pugged in, they should have no reason to be in use and could easily be deleted - IF your coders knew what the hell they were doing. Jim: The device does not have to be plugged in to uninstall - at least not with uninstall software that works. Linksys software needs to be plugged the adapter in the computer in between the installation and un installation . This kit has been getting slower & s l o w e r & s l o .... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I finally got round to re loading the machine from the backup partition. It now seems to operate quicker than new and is almost a pleasure to use (apart from the much maligned UAC). Internet is much more responsive (in spite of a best speed of 1.5mbps, file copy is pretty fair, all in all, now a satisfactory box. Working beautifully for many months, and then a few weeks ago this began happening: Perhaps 2-3 times a week, and with no consistency of circumstances, a blue screen will appear. It might happen while working or when returning from hibernate. There's a countdown as memory is stored, and then a freeze. The only way to recover is to do a hard OFF (5 seconds on the power switch) and restart. When it first happened, I had not installed or changed anything, so I was comfortable doing a restore.     - Programs folder issue I have an odd issue and I'm not sure how this occurred. As of a few weeks ago, whenever I install a program, the Start Menu shortcuts do not go into the Programs folder in the Start Menu. Instead, a separate folder called Programs appears on my desktop with the new start menu shortcuts. Additionally, whenever I restart my computer, if I have removed the folder on my desktop, a new, empty, Programs folder will appear on my desktop. Is there some setting I can change or something I can tweak to restore normal functionality?     - system icons keep disappearing I am using Vista Home Premium and for the past few months the system icons keep disappearing from the taskbar.     - Microsoft Anytime Upgrade Rip-Off I'm quite happy with Windows Vista and have it on 4 machines. I recently bought a new HP mini note and was going to upgrade from the OEM Vista Business that came on the machine to Vista Ultimate, that is until I checked out the Canadian pricing for an Anytime upgrade. Microsoft wants us to pay $179 to move from business to ultimate which seems like a ridiculous amount. In checking out alternatives I noted that I can buy OEM Ultimate here for $209 or OEM Business for $165, so one would expect to pay some where around $45 more to upgrade not 4 times that amount. Even at retail pricing the price for full Vista Ultimate with SP 1 here is $329 and Vista Business with SP 1 is $299 a difference of $30, so how does Microsoft get off on charging $179 to upgrade from Business to Ultimate.
