    - Vista won't start up properply My computer will load up normally the way until it reaches the screen with the green bar and black screen. The green bar will cycle through about two to three times, but then it stops moving. It moves forward just a little bit every 5 minutes though, so if I leave it like that for about 40 minutes then Vista will be able to boot to my desktop. And when I try to restart my computer, it just stays at the 'Shutting Down" screen forever. The longest I've let the shutting down screen just stay there was 20 minutes. I had to cut the power. Anything that has to do with networking seems to make my computer freeze up. I can start up in Safe Mode but not Safe Mode with Networking. And when I waited the 40 minutes start my comp up, the Vista said the the "Network cable is unplugged", but it wasn't.     - White screen Hello all. I'm new here, all the way from Iceland so my english is maybe not so good. I've had a problem with my computer but it's showing white screen. I maybe turn it on and a few minutes later it's completely white. Sometimes it showes first stripes, black and white. I've googled it but not found much so I went here to ask. For about 2 months ago I had problem with BSOD but re-installed Vista and it was OK. My computer is Packard Bell SB87 (something like that, not sure) and with Vista Home Premium.     - DVD Region Free Application For Vista Although this post may not seem to be about Vista, I think it is pertinent for some people such those in my position who have moved to Vista from XP. As my time has been didvided between UK and USA I have purchased over the last few years a fair number of DVD videos, some in PAL color - Region 2, and some in NTSC color - Region 1. Absurdly, laptops will permit you to change from Region 1 to Region 2 and back again a total of four times only. The reasons given by the creators of movies and the DVD manufacturers may be good for them, but not for those who believe that such restrictions are unconstitutional at the widest, and just annoying for those who have bought a product in one country and want to play it on a laptop (which travels with one) in another country. When I used machines running Windows XP, it was easy. A company in Hongkong released a program called DVD Region Free and CSS (or something like that). You could download it on to your machine and it freed up things so that any DVD would play without restriction. Unfortunately they have never thought fit to develop a program that works on Vista. So using the well-beloved Google, I put in all sorts of criteria and found a number of promising applications that didn't work when downloaded. (HINT: always create a restore point first!). Then I found a program that works. It is called Any DVD, and you can Google it for yourself. It comes from www.SlySoft.com/ I downloaded the 21-day free trial which worked so well that 21 MINUTES later (or thereabouts) I was ready to pay for the license key. I don't understand the prnciple on which it works but it's promotional material doesn't say anything about any particular version of Windows, so I think it's operational methods go a bit deeper. Please believe that I don't work for the company! I just believe in passing on useful information when it comes up. Okay: it cost me 49 Euros (no local tax added) but for anyone with a fair number of multi-regional DVDs, I find it's a bargain. And free for the first 21 days if you want to test it out.     - problem repairing vista during dual boot xp/vista installation Hello. I'm attempting to install xp on a computer that originally only had vista installed to achieve a dual boot installation where I can choose between xp and vista. I'm using the following online guide: http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_vista_and_xp_with_vista_installed_first__the_stepbystep_guide.htm The first steps go fine, I can shrink the vista partition (although I use gparted instead of the shrink command in diskpart) to make free space for an xp partition on the same drive. I've made 50 gb available for xp, which leaves 90 gb for vista. Subsequently I've installed xp on the new partition and that goes according to plan. However, when I use the original vista dvd to repair the vista installation, to ensure the computer boots in vista again (because after I've installed xp, the computer reboots in xp), I can't repair the vista installation. I can select the vista installation to repair it (start up repair), but it reports no existing problems. However when I reboot, I still end up in xp. Does anyone know how to manually ensure the computer boots again from my original vista installation? So I can resume the guide by installing EasyBCD to ensure I get a menu when I reboot where I can choose between the xp and vista installation.     - Backup system, home premium? I am looking for a means to create system backup of my Vista Home premium version in case I shall ever have to reinstall the system, for instance on a new harddisk. The backup help on my system tells me that the tool for this task is a "PC Complete backup", but also that this is not available on Vista home versions.     - Windows Vista x64 searches 5 times longer than Windows XP! Hello! Why does Windows Vista x64 search so long, especially when the progress in the bar is at the end and the ring is rolling (a replacement for the sand glass)? When a search is not "nearly instantaneous" it takes nearly forever. That is, when you ask for an Advanced Search of Computer, the bar first goes half-way across fairly quickly. Then it goes more slowly to about 3/4 of the way, appearing to redraw the bar every second or so, then more slowly still to 7/8, etc., getting closer to the end with each redraw - but never quite reaching the end. I watch hopefully as it gets to the little down-pointing triangle, thinking that it will give up when it gets there and report that it can't find what it's searching for. But it doesn't. It keeps creeping further, past the vertical separator at the end of the Address Bar, and then at a maddeningly slow pace across the red "X" and... hours later, the green bar is still being redrawn and it STILL hasn't got to the end.     - Corrupted video system I left my computer running during the night and noted that the following morning there were a few flashing horizontal lines next to the mouse pointer (something like TV scan lines) which followed the mouse pointer as the pointer moved. Also discovered that all my video players (Media Player, Real Player, Nero) now show corrupted videos (screen is covered by multiple horiziontal flickering lines of varying colour and thickness) and the colours are bleeding through while playing spider solitaire (from underlying layer to top card). No new software was installed during the time the computerwas operating. and I resolved the mouse pointer issue by changing the pointer to a black one. Any help to fix it. Am running Vista Home Premium SP1 with a ATI AGP Radeon 9700 pro with the 7-4 driver (cannot not use later drivers because they will not install (infamous Code 43 error) and IE 8 beta. In an attempt to remedy the problem I have done the following: changed my mouse from a P/S2 to a USB complete virus, adware, etc scan complete uninstall and re-install of the ATI driver and software. and All works well when I operate the computer in safe mode or when I uninstalled the ATI driver and use the basic VGA driver. I have also note that during the boot-up process the VGA screen appears corrupted but clears up when windows starts.     - Word&Excel:Add-Edit Toolbar&Buttons:Autocorrect to Excel Toolbar!! OK, I give up!!! How do I create a new toolbar? How do I edit the Toolbar Command Buttons (Icons?)? How do I create and add an Autocorrect (AC) Command Button to an Excel Toolbar??? NOW the Complaints: I HATE the ribbons, period? I LOVED the nice, neat, useful, and tiny toolbars I created and edited in the 2003 programs and this 'RIBBON' thing is the most obnoxious thing ever !! I REALLY fell bad for those laptop dudes and dudettes, especially the 15" (or smaller) screens. I have a nice, new, big 19" and I find the useless and extravagant space requirements for the "Ribbon" (who came up with that one, anyway?) EXTREMELY ANNOYING. I used to have three to six shortened, "CUSTOMER"-ized toolbars arranged in 2 to 3 rows and made up of the commands I NEED and/or WANTED and they used up the same or less space than this stupid Ribbon!!! OH, and that's another thing, I could center them for easy access!!! When created a Macro and placed it in a toolbar a generic icon would be displayed but I could, and did, copy, paste, edit them so I could tell at a glance what command was being represented!!! I didn't care for many of the icons in the 2003 Word and Excel and I could EASILY edit them to my liking - as in something that made sense. I could and did, create different toolbars that I could easily customize, open or close depending on the type af task I was performing, and I REALLY don't like many of the Microsoft default buttons. I created numerous Macros that I added to the toolbar(s) because there were no commands available for certain tasks I wanted to shortcut. NOW, HA, I'm stuck with what Microsoft thinks I need, with what Microsoft thinks we ALL need. AS you can tell, I'm PO'd about this. I have spent more hours trying to figure a way to get what I want than it did to edit a create my old toolbars and the more hours I spend researching and trying to figure it out the more frustrating that time is and the more it takes away from creating and editing!!! HELL, why do you thing I am posting this at 5.00 AM - I can't justify spending any more time on it at work or taking time away from my family so here I am!! I started researching this AGAIN around midnight and now, another 5 hours burned up with ZILCHO TO SHOW FOR IT!! I am not at all impressed with VISTA, period, never mind the inability to CUSTOMerIZE the program toolbars I use EVERY day. It is about the customer, isn't it? My experience so far is that 2007 programs and VISTA are not an upgrade - they're more like a DOWNGRADE. OH, and I would go back to the 2003 programs but, for some odd reason, one can't very easily find a new computer with just plain old windows. Anyway, enough of the wine - I need some cheese. And any help - NO, specific answers that a non-tech like me cn understand - would be appreciated, very much!!! ps: Man, I never write stuff like this, sorry!     - display setting on beamer change unmotivated after 10min... Hi, I have a IBM T60p and recently installed VISTA enterprise. When I connect the laptop to an external beamer, it all works fine and properly detects the device and adjusts the resolution but after around 10min of operation (using powerpoint) it just changed the resolution to something else (lowers the resolution, so that only around 70% of the slide was visible) without me having done something. As this obvioulsy is a horror scenario during a presentation in front of 100people that I'll have in a few days, ....what can I do to make sure something like this does not happen again?     - Publisher 2007 Fill Effects I used to have Publisher 2000 on my old computer. I've since upgraded to Vista and Publisher 2007, and all-in-all the new version is superior. However, I just went to do a fill effect for the background of a picture in my document, and I discovered much to my disappointment that many of the fill effect patterns from Publisher 2000 that were kind of cool seem to be gone. I'm referring to the simple fade-in / fade-out type patterns where you can select multiple colors to blend into one another following a pre-set geometric shape. Publisher 2000 used to have many more shapes than I have now - there used to be a variety of spirals, stars, arrows, and so forth to choose from. Now there are only some basic variations on horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and "from center". I want to know if there is any way to install just those fill effect patterns from either my old Publisher 2000 CD or from some other source so that I once again have access to them; or is it possible to have both versions of Publisher installed and functional at the same time on my computer?     - I Miss The Old XP Modem Avtivity Icon In the system tray in Windows XP there was a modem icon that lighted up when data was being transmitted or received. It really helped with a dialup connection - being able to see if the connection was active or not. In Vista, the modem icon is static and doesn't show anything other than the fact that there is an active connection.     - Can't get into Safe Mode/Error loading Operating System Whenever I start my computer, it will load and then suddenly, I'll get an message saying "Error loading operating system". I'm pretty sure I need to go into safe mode and pull a system restore. The real problem is, I can't get into my Advanced Boot Options now. I was able to do it before but ever since this problem arised, I've put hours into pressing F8 while its loading, but it doesn't go into any options. Anyone know what to do?     - Vista DEP Problems Microsoft Vista DEP Violation Problems I have 32 bit Microsoft Vista Ultimate. It is running on a Dell XPS420 with Q6600, 2.4GHZ quad processor that I purchased in December 2007. I have 4 GB @ 667 MHZ of memory (3.3 GB usable). I have a 256 MB ATI HD 2600 graphics card. I have a Dell Ultrasharp 22 inch monitor (1680 x 1050 pixels). I use McAfee VirusScan Plus. I have Office Professional 2003 and use Outlook for e-mail. Microsoft Works 8.5 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 came with the computer. I have 2 Optical drives E: & F: a 320 SATA hard drive C: & D: and a 250 GB SATA hard drive G: for backup. I use Embarq DSL. I have a HP psc 1210v all-in-one printer for normal use and a very simple Lexmark Z600 printer used exclusively for printing name badges. Microsoft update is auto and all Microsoft software is current. Except for Microsoft Vista SP1 which Microsoft has advised not to install. Other programs such as McAfee VirusScan, Windows Defender etc. are up to date. I had a problem with my Microsoft Vista print spooler (spoolsv.exe) stopping on Data Execution Prevention (DEP) violations from the time I installed my HP and Lexmark printers. This has been only an irritation to date as I have set the spooler to always restart 1 minute after failure. However lately I am having more programs stop on DEP violation. The Microsoft Vistaâ?? WMI Provider Hostâ?? has stopped several times on DEP. I do not know what the â??Vista WMI Provider Hostâ?? does. I did not see any adverse results with the Microsoft Vistaâ?? WMI Provider Hostâ?? stopped. So far my DEP violations have been random and inconsistent. The print spooler stops on DEP even when both printers are off. I have performed hardware checks as recommended by Dell and the computer hardware tested OK. Today however, Microsoft Vista Internet Explorer 7 failed 4 times on DEP violations. These failures were repeatable. I was filling in a grant application at the My Safe Florida Home Website. I went through several pages of questions on the website and filled in the necessary data. The final step was to â??Browseâ?? for and open my home insurance data (a .jpg file) and to â??Browseâ?? for and open my Property Appraisal (a .jpg file). Each time I clicked on browse, Microsoft Vista IE7 stopped on a DEP violation and I lost my connection to the My Safe Florida Home Website. After determining that my new Dell XSP420 computer was not able to complete the grant application, I got out my 6 year old HP Presario laptop with XP and was able to complete the grant application without any problems.     - Backup is full, Not Full Backup I am trying to figure out what to do when my backup location can no longer accept new backups because it is full. I tried to do a search but the "full" just brings up references to the Full Backup you can do with Windows Vista Ultimate. Any one know where I could find out best practices for doing backups. For example, do I reformat the drive my backup is on so I can do another backup? Or do I buy a bigger drive, and continue doing this as the months go by? Do I swap for another drive to continue doing my backups, and just keep buying more drives as they get filled? Do I hope that Moore's Law also applies to hard drive storage? A year ago I set up sub folders under "Local Folders" in Windows Mail.
Everytime I opened my email the sub folders would be displayed under "Local
Folders." Now the only folder displayed is "Local Folders." However, when I
double click on "Local Folders" a box opens to the right which reflects all
the sub folders in the "Local Folders" and my emails are there. When I
double click on a sub folder, it then shows up in the left hand box under
"Local Folders." When I close Windows Mail and open again, the sub folders
once again are not displayed. I have to go through the process again of
clicking on each folder to display it under "Local Folders." Has anyone
experienced this problem and found a solution to resolving?

Make sure that the Folder list is enabled under View | Layout. Then go to
Tools | Options and check the box to automatically display folders with
unread messages. See if that helps.
