system restore
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium. For some reason my HP wireless
scanner won't show up on my computer and it says "no HP device found" even
though I can print from wireless. So I am trying a system restore to three
weeks ago when everything was working perfectly.
The system restore won't work. Every time I try it I get "system did not
restore due to unspecified error."
No matter what date I try it won't work. Help Please.

Vista 64 Ultimate
I have installed the OS fine with 2 gb of memory and now want to add the
send set of 2gb to go to 4gb. I have heard you need SP1 in order to do this.
I went to update to SP1 and read some forms that if all the drivers are up to
date it should come in the auto d/ls I have done all the automatic updates
and no SP1. All drivers on the system are up to date. I was going to just d/l
it and install mannually but read it is not a good idea as people have had
major issues like blue screens ect once they do this. And it is safer to wait
for automatic updates to do this to ensure system is in line with sp1.
What am I to do? I want my 4gb of ram.
Thanks much Tag: Easy transfer on my XP machine autoloads Tag: 373971
Crash and burn
My hard drive w/ Win XP decided to just up and die. It won't even turn off
or send a signal to a monitor. I went out and bought a new computer w/
Vista. My problem is, how do I recover what was on the old hard drive if I
can't see anything on a monitor? Will I have to pay a recovery service or is
it gone forever? Tag: Easy transfer on my XP machine autoloads Tag: 373961
someone at Microsoft is very angry.. LOL
I see constant deletions of post on the microsoft vista newsgroup server..
This may be due to:
1) some GLITCH (not unlikely if the newsgroups are running on windows 2008..
LOL)
2) Someone at microsoft doesn't like us saying the truth about how bad and
creepy vista is!
I think it's the later...
So what are these MSFT guys doing? Deleting posts? Shame on them.. trying to
conceal the truth about how crap vista is!
If they didn't want harsh comments, people cursing vista, peoples hate posts
or people just making good ol fun of vista...
THEY SHOULD HAVE MADE IT BETTER!
I don't see this crap going on on the XP newsgroup for example. WHY?
Its vistas fault.. no one elses...
so stop deleting messages and work faster on windows7 to make it better,
because vista is already doomed. Tag: Easy transfer on my XP machine autoloads Tag: 373918
Re: How to keep making money while making CRAP products?
Im fed up reading posts about how MS has sold 140 million liscences of
Vista, trying to feed us the notion
that somehow vista is actually a successful product.
You know what I have to say about that? >>>> HOGWASH!
So how does MS keep on making money while making CRAP products like VISTA?!?
Simple. Create a monopoly! Yeah... the Microsoft way!
Then push your new crap products on new computers ....
Then say: "See? Our new product (im talking about vista here of course) is
GREAT and it selling like hotcakes!"
EHEMMMM.... its selling like hotcakes because you are selling it
preinstalled on new computers dahh......
And then you have the stupid idiots that see the 140 million number and say
... wow... vista is great! its selling so many copies!
Don't be ridiculous! That's how many new computers are sold anyway! LOL
And since MS pushes its stupid new vista on new computers (you can get xp on
some new computers if you go to the right place,
but you must specifically ask for it... at first this was impossible to do
anyway... MS had excluded XP from ALL new computers! Then some companies
insisted on selling xp due to popular demand.. so MS had to comply very
reluctantly!)
Lol.... can some idiot vista fanboys eat this sh!t? They actually think
vista is selling because its good?
Give UBUNTU the monopoly for one and a half year, meaning that it will be
PUSHED on new computers for 18 months like vista has, and guess what?
140 computers will have ubuntu! Then guess what? Suddenly all big software
houses will have ported their apps to work on ubuntu!
But lets make some thing clear... 140 mill licenses that MS claims does not
mean that there are 140 million computers actually running vista-crapista.
Nope, many dual boot with xp, and forget about vista, many format vista and
install XP, many just hate their new vista computer and use their old XP
computer
to do actual work, many got the upgrade anytime vista license and never
upgraded! (those are the smart ones)
People who cannot think, have limited perception of reality, or just plainly
believe what they want to believe (LIKE DORK FRANK the biggest idiot of this
newsgroup ever), JUST GIVE ME THE CREEPS!
Just think of this: If these people can eat whatever they are told, and
actually become fanboys of lies, what OTHER FALSE THINGS do these people
believe?
These people remind me of how gullible the Germans were and started
listening to Hitler's crap, and actually believed him!
FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!

AVG Free 8 and Vista possible conflicts?
Today I downloaded the new free AVG. I have this and Spyware blaster

The software on both mine and my dad's laptops is pretty identical,
and the same result showed up on both.
I wasn't sure what to do at the end. I haven't changed any settings
and as I understand it all the threats were removed. At any rate I
ran the scan again and nothing was found.
The supposed adware etc often is listed under 'File' in AVG as HKLM

helps anyone identify what's happening any better. I just considered

Xbox 360 will not recognize external hard drives on pc
I have my Xbox 360 connected to my PC wirelessly. I had it set up so that I
could view my vieos, etc., that were on my PC with no problems. Most are on

everything cool down, and now my 360 won't recognize the external drives. It
still gives me the option for any files on my internal HD, but the external
ones do not show up in either the "Videos" section, or "Media Center". They
are all there, however, if I go into Windows Media Player or Media Center on

I tried to change the display settings in my 'preferences' or 'personalise'

internet explorer open fine on screen and maximise as normal, but all folder
windows, recycle bin, control panel etc appear to open off screen. I've
changed my start bar settings so i can access control panel by expanding

i cannot thing of any other way to get it back to normal and I've only been
using Vista for an hour.

Running a 2nd OS with Vista Home edition (Windows 98?)
I've lost a magazine I had that talked of having dual OS's. I'd like

I finally got CHKDSK to run on reboot. How to troubleshoot the problem.
I had corruption on my hard drive and couldn't get CHKDSK to run on
reboot. I finally found what was preventing CHKDSK from running on
reboot. It's so hard to diagnose I wanted to document how to
troubleshoot it here in case anyone else has the same problem.
To troubleshoot CHKDSK does not run on reboot:
1. Set a System Restore Point
2. Run msconfig
3. select 'Boot' tab
4. check "Boot log" and "OS boot information"
5. reboot. See what it says during boot.
6. after boot, check log file C:\WINDOWS\ntbtlog.txt
(or something similar to that, such as ntbootlog.txt)
7. One (or more) of these drivers being loaded is causing CHKDSK to say,
"Cannot open volume for direct access."
Stop these drivers from loading until CHKDSK works again.
Figure out which one (or ones) is causing the problem.
8. Pick a driver to disable (e.g. elrawdsk.sys)
9. Run Regedit
10. Search for that driver (elrawdsk.sys) under key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services
11. Under that driver's registry entry, set 'Start' to 4
The service start methods & values are:
1. (unknown)
2. Automatic
3. Manual
4. Disabled
12. Set CHKDSK to run on reboot:
a. Right-click on the C: drive
b. Properties
c. Tools (tab)
d. "Error checking. This option will check the volume for errors."
click 'Check Now..."
e. select "Automatically fix file system errors" (checkbox)
f. 'Start'
g. "Windows can't check the disk while it's in use. Do you want to
check for hard disk errors the next time you start your computer?"
select 'Schedule disk check'
13. Reboot. See if CHKDSK runs during the reboot.
14. Repeat until you find the offending service(s).
In my case there were two drivers causing the problem:
1. elrawdsk.sys
"The process RawDisk Driver. Allows write-access to raw disk sectors for
user mode applications in Windows 2000, belongs to the software
ElRawDisk by EldoS Corporation."
(I probably installed a trial version of Crypto4, and the uninstaller
didn't remove this file.)
2. HMFAxCore826fcf267a04f6fadfb619829081c960.sys
Digitally signed by Eltima Software, and used by another 3rd party
virtual volume encryption program I was trying out.

Since there are well over 100 drivers that get loaded on boot, and most
are fine, I'll append here a list of drivers which are not the problem
and do not prevent CHKDSK from running. This will narrow down what
drivers to test disable. These drivers load on my Vista Home Premium and
CHKDSK runs OK on reboot. This list may be useful to someone
troubleshooting CHKDSK, as these are drivers they don't need to try
disabling:

Are you looking for a GOOD Defragmenter application?
Why pay upwards of a $100 when you can get a open source one that has
nearly as many features and actually runs faster? Way faster!
I've used Windows built-in Defragmenter and cursed it for how slow it
can be and how clumsy not to mention all the files it skips over.
I've paid for Disk Keeper and others and found them to be wanting too.
UltraDefrag v1.3.4 seems superior in every way. You can't beat free
and it is fast. I just finishing up running it on a moderately
fragmented large (750GB) drive, total time 2 hours 6 minutes.
You can either run from a command prompt or get the often appreciated
graphical display of clusters being moved around. Runs in background
so doesn't interfere with what else you're doing. Written in C it
seems much faster than many others. Works with all popular versions of
Windows, both 32 and 64 bit. A very small footprint.

Alternatives to formatting HD and reinstalling Vista
I have a Vista Premium PC where I installed a trial version of a program,
let it expire and now I bought the full version but cannot seem to get it to
install since the ghost of the old trial version seems to be haunting my PC.
Before I start formatting the drive (and lose all my other programs and
settings) and attempt to reinstall Vista, I was wondering whether there was
some easy way to wipe all traces of the trial program? I am no great tech
expert, so protracted brain surgery with registry settings may not be an
option for me! Tag: Easy transfer on my XP machine autoloads Tag: 373716

issues with MS vx-1000 cam
Hi: I have Vista Ultimate 32 bit, and I bought a new livecam vx-1000:
I followed the installation procedure, putting the cd-rom inside the
cd reader; the install proceeded, and apparently it installed the
content; thereupon, a prompt requested to insert the usb jack of the
cam; I did that, and a popup balloon appeared on the traybar, telling
that the system was seacrhing for the drivers; but after a while it
ended saying that it wasn't possible to find any drivers!
But what? It is a Vista-ready hardware, produced by the very company
selling Vista!
I repeated the same procedure on the pc of the guy that sold me the
cam, having same hardware and same OS; the installation went smooth at
first shot! Though, he himself is unable to figure what is the
problem.
Why I cannot install this cam? Please help me. Tag: Easy transfer on my XP machine autoloads Tag: 373710
Access 2003 database inconsistent behaviour between Vista and XP
Hi Groupies:
I'm not sure which newsgroup this question belongs to, sorry.
I have an Access 2003 database that was built on my Vista laptop. This
laptop also has Access 2007 installed but that version has not been used at
all to work with this database. My other computer has Windows XP and only
has Access 2003 installed.
In a couple of forms I have combo boxes that are used for searches. On my
Vista machine, these searches work fine, on my XP machine, the searches
work, but no data is "visible" when you push the down arrow. The list still
shows the correct number of rows as if the data was there, but no words show
up so you have to guess at what you are selecting.
The query behind the search boxes works fine and if you try the query by
itself all of the data shows up properly.
Not realizing what was going on, I spent a couple of hours trying to fix the
searches on my XP machine. I changed formatting, rebuilt the query,
everything I could think of. There was no way that I could make this thing
work on XP yet no problems on Vista.
What is the deal????
Any insight?......Anybody.......

Thanks for taking the time!

I am currntly running Vista with SP1. I can connect to my WebDAV folders but
when I try to double click on a folder inside the Explorer window it doesn't
work. I would need to Right Click on the folder and select Explore in order
to open the folder. When I try to double click to open a Word document it
doesn't work, so I must also right click on the document and select Open.

How to keep making money while making CRAP products?!?

Download Complete - Window does not close
(VISTA Ultimate SP1)
Has anyone had any problems downloading files and having the download window
never closes? Steps to replicate:
1. Open Web Page
2. Select File to Download
3. Watch the file begin to download
4. Download screen will say "Verifying"
5. The download gets to 99% and it never closes.
Why would the window remain on the screen, but the file be downloaded
properly? Makes no sense!
Any ideas?? Tag: Easy transfer on my XP machine autoloads Tag: 373669
how to access alias::* from anywhere.
To illustrate my question i'll just give the scenario i'm facing right
now.
I'm using uTorrent and would like to enter as default download path
something in the lines of "%downloads%\P2P\" or "shell::downloads\P2P'".
Obviously none of these is the correct one and my question is, what is
the correct way to use the shell folders from applications, command
prompt and autohotkey scripts.
Thanks!

Can't preview pictures on desktop anymore
Hi,
For some reason I can no longer preview computer pictures(bmp, jpg,
gif, etc)that are on the desktop. Normally, by double clicking the
images would open up Windows Photo Gallery. Now nothing happens.
Double clicking in folder's in my computer still work, just the
desktop seems to be having this issue now. Even if I right-click and
choose preview or 'open-with'. It's very ood.
I tried setting Windows Photo Gallery as the default program to open
these images files with hoping it would fix the problem, but it didn't
work
Any help fixing this would be greatly appreciated!

Background Vista Sidebar
Does anyone know whether it's possible to change the background color or
transparency of the Vista sidebar?
After first installing Vista, it was entirely transparent, but then became
(and still is) a gradient, going from transparent on the left to almost
entirely black on the right. Quite frankly, this looks horrible and makes you
think there's something wrong with the screen. Anything but a gradient (i.e.,
image, colored background, or fully transparent), would be a 1000 times
better.
Detaching gadgets to put them elsewhere on the desktop isn't an option, as
they become bigger, which is not what I want.

Vista question about "compatibility mode" and "safe mode"
Hi, my problem is I'm trying to run a program which can only run under two
conditions:
1) Can only run under windows XP.
2) Needs to run in safe mode to work correctly.
I can solve the first problem by simply runing the program under
compatibility mode (so it thinks its running under XP SP2). but the problem
is that in Safe Mode I can't use the compatibility mode because the
option is greyed out.
So my question is; is there any other way to use compatibility mode while in
Safe mode? like from the command line?
Many thanks in advance. Tag: Easy transfer on my XP machine autoloads Tag: 373602
PowerShell, some clarifications required
I need to know more about PowerShell:
Does it run under XP as well as Vista.
Could it be used to automate responding to questions that come up during the
installation of a Access Runtime application?
Is there anything else that might?
Does it need to installed on the PC where the installation is taking place?
I am trying to help Users who install my application and get a lot of dialog
boxes coming up to which they have to give the correct answer or much pain
ensues! That's what happens when you install Access 2002 runtime on Vista.
Any answer or comment would be welcome.

Cannot Rename a New Folder
Recently I have found that I cannot rename a "New Folder".
I can create a New Folder OK, but when I right click and select Rename, then
the newly typed name reverts back to "New Folder" and I get the error message
"File Does Not Exist".
I can rename the folder OK through a Command Prompt window, but not in
Explorer.
I have tried "taking Ownership" and "Running as Administator", with UAC
turned off, and again with UAC turned on. No go.
I have read several threads from people with what sounds like the same
problem. All seem to come down to a corrupt registry entry in the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT
VERSION\EXPLORER\FOLDER_DESCRIPTIONS.
I have tried to fix this as advised in
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/130137-cannot-rename-move-file-folder-vista-fix.html,
by downloading a file; Fix_Rename_32_Bit_Vista.reg and merging it into the
registry by right clicking
This does not work either.
Any ideas please.
I am running 32 bit Vista Home Premium. Not a Vlite installation.
I cannot perform a repair install as I do not have a Vista Install Disc -
the pc came pre-loaded with Vista, with the install files hidden somewhere
(in the BIOS ?). I really don't want to start from scratch with a clean
install - it takes days to reload all software and get all settings back to
where I want them.
If the answer involves editing the registry, please explain it very
carefully to me; I am a bit of a novive re: registry entries.

Vista Won't Sleep
Ever since I got Vista Ultimate a bit over a year ago it was very
reluctant to enter sleep mode; it would manage that maybe one in four
tries. This is on a Gateway fX530XV with a 24 in gateway monitor. I
recently installed SP1 and it has absolutely refused to go to sleep.
When that choice is clicked on the monitor goes dark and very shortly
the orange standby light comes on. The hard drive light quits flashing
and the system will accept no inputs at all. I have to use the power
button to turn it off and then during restart I have to click on "Start
Windows Normally" to avoid a period of apparent self checking, then it
goes on to the user page and then to a chosen desktop. I would like for
it to access sleep so as to return to where it was when paused, as well
as having a quicker restart. Comments would certainly be welcome. Oh
yeah, the unit has 4GB RAM and a processor that runs at 2.13 Hz, and
neither has ever been a bother.

Windows Update and Norton Internet Security 2008
I have a laptop runing Vista (no SP1) and am having problems running
Windows Updates on the machine. I have run Windows Update on this
machine in the past. I recently had to uninstall and reinstall NIS
2008 on this laptop.
Now when I run Windows Updates, it produces the following error:
--------------------------------
Windows could not search for new updates
Error(s) found: CODE 80072EE2
The only option is to "Get Help". Clicking on that shows 25 Windows
Updates, all with an error and error code. The error code 80072EE2
details provides the following instructions;
Add the following websites to your firewall exceptions list;
----------------------------------------
I have a message on the Symantec support forum. But wanted to see if
anyone here have add websites to NIS 2008's Exceptions list? I know
how to add IP Addresses to the Trusted List, but this does not appear
to be the area to add these sites.
Or is there another reason within Windows Update for this error?
Thanks for any assistance.

Using Black wall paper locks up computer
I recently switched my Vista Home Premium computer to using black for the
wallpaper. Bad idea.
The next time I booted up, nothing would run. Outlook would not run,
Taskmanager opened but only slowly. My browser would not tun.
As soon as I switched back to my last wallpaper, everything ran just fine.
Is there something inherently wrong with using black?
