    - Can spell check be inserted into Notepad, or Wordpad? I am using Vista home basic Notepad. I find note pad very convienient for journaling and keeping track of things like user names and passwords. When I first began using the programe I knew there was no spell check but I continued anyway. Unfortunatly my spelling is so attricious that I'm going to have to do something. I know there are other programes I can use but now I have a great deal of text already writen that i would realy hate to break the stream of what I already have. I was hoping that there may be a way to insert some form of spell check into Notepad, if not I guess I'll have to move the text over to word pad. Just a sec , I'm ging to see if wordpad has spell check.... Crap! How ironic, I just tried to use my browser spell check on this window...Not! Well if anyone Knows how to accomplish the task of inserting spell check into Notepad or Word pad let me know. While we are at it lets us try and talk Microsoft into spell check for this window.     - vista licence If the 32-bit version comes pre-installed in my laptop, am I entitled to a copy of the 64-bit version? The system resources can adaquately run the 64-bit version. I understand that it is not recomended to switch to the 64-bit version, but I am wondering if I would be entitled to the other version. On the Microsoft website, it states that the 64-bit version is availale is Vista was purchased as a "retail, packaged product." Does that not include pre-installed versions of Vista?     - Vista XP Dual Boot Hi I am submitting the question for a friend who has purchased a HP Pavillion 9200 laptop. ($4,500 AU) He has been trying to set up a dual boot for Vista and XP without any success. He has been infromed by HP technical support that this computer will not allow a dual boot of these systems. In fact, it will not even allow installation of XP. As I have never heard of this I was just wondering is this the case?, can some new computers only run Vista?     - taskbar and desktop icons disappearing! For some reason, when I log onto my account on my computer, my taskbar and desktop icons disappear. I have restarted and shut down the computer multiple times, but each time I log on, my taskbar, which is at the bottom, and my desktop icons, which are on the top, will appear for not even a minute and then vanish and all that I am left to see is my wallpaper. When I click around on the wallpaper, nothing pops up and when I press keys on the keyboard, nothing comes up either. The only way I am able to get onto the internet is by pressing CTRL+ALT+delete to get to the task manager and type in "new task" the website I want to go to. The only thing that I can think of that might have had something to do with this was when I had to spy sweep my computer. After it had finished sweeping, the taskbar started to "refresh" itself by disappearing for a moment, then reappearing. Now, the task bar just disappears all together along with the desktop icons.     - Easy Transfer via Ext. Harddisk: SaveData.mig file? Hi, I transfered my data (and my IE Favourites, not complete Users of program configurations) sucessfully from my XP to a new Vista, and I used my external harddrive to do it. Now when I look at my Hard Drive I see a file SaveData.mig of about 35 GB (I tranfered over 40GB, so that not it, right? Or is it, compressed??) Is it so you could tranfer it to antother PC?     - Vista Home - No "windows sounds" from laptop. Suddenly my HP pavillion laptop will not play any "windows sounds". When i test them under control panel/sounds and sounds tap, they will also not play there. Also in internett sounds, will not play (youtube etc.). Have tried firefox and explorer. Sounds from dvd, mp3, skype, etc works perfectly. What toubuleshooting i have done so far ; - Updated drivers from HP homepage. - Rolled back driver to try earlyer. - Restored windows at a point that i know sounds worked. - Checked if sound are muted or turend down in the mixer. - Comfirmed that sounds are enabled in internett options. I use the internal speakers in laptop, so now loudspeakers are connected. And i have not done any changes in the sound scheems in sound options.     - Defrag in vista and loss of space I am currently using a 200gb hd sony vaio laptop running Vista Home Premium 32bit and i have defraged. I used windows defrag and o&o defrag and both when i run them i lose around 4-5gb of hd space this is insane. Now i run the cleaner and i reset my pagefile and all this stuff fixes it.     - Blank screen on laptop when connected to TV Hello all, I can connect my laptop to my computer and get sound and video with absolutely no problem. Where I run into my issue: When it's connected, the TV turn into the monitor and my laptop goes blank. (I believe I selected this option not knowing what the outcome would be when my windows vista laptop was connected to the TV for the very first time).     - Laptop won't shut down... Vista Business, T7700, 4GB Avast/Defender/Spybot sez "clean" Recently had BSOD problem due to driver conflict, detected and fixed using Verifier. This morning, shutdown wouldn't. After 20 minutes I did the hard thing, then restarted, stabilized, and tried again. After another 25 minutes - the same.     - Windows Vista Ultimate Backup does not work When I first installed MS Vista Ultimate 64 bit I did a full backup using the imbedded backup and restore center. After that I made two subsequent backups. I experienced a severe problem with the operating system that could not be diagnosed so I decided to try a restore point first. After all restore points failed to solve the problem I decided to try a full restore using the imbedded backup and restore center (which by the way I keep backups on another SATA drive and that drive is used for no other purpose). When trying the newest made backup the system froze in the middle of the restore and said that it could not find a file. OK, so I went to the next oldest full backup. This was restored. However, after restoration Internet Explorer would not work and neither would the start menu. OK, so I boot the Vista Ultimate 64 bit DVD and tried to restore the last known oldest full backup. After this was done same problem. Internet Explorer would not open although the start menu would work. Let me give you my experience from yesterday. I decided to download (Moviemaker) and buy the Digital Plus pack ... so I went to Microsoft.com. They have a download place so I went there. The first 5 times I used the site it timed out while trying to bring up the download page. Then after an 8 second delay I got it to come up. This site is so slow it is unusable. It wasn't in the top 5 so I expanded the other 45. These 45 names are totally confusing. These names make stuff like: C:\Documents and Settings\billg\My Documents\My Pictures seem clear. They are not filtered by the system ... and so many of the things are strange. I tried scoping to Media stuff. Still no moviemaker. I typed in movie. Nothing. I typed in movie maker. Nothing. So I gave up and sent mail to Amir saying - where is this Moviemaker download? Does it exist? So they told me that using the download page to download something was not something they anticipated. They told me to go to the main page search button and type movie maker (not moviemaker!). I tried that. The site was pathetically slow but after 6 seconds of waiting up it came. I thought for sure now I would see a button to just go do the download. In fact it is more like a puzzle that you get to solve. It told me to go to Windows Update and do a bunch of incantations. This struck me as completely odd. Why should I have to go somewhere else and do a scan to download moviemaker? So I went to Windows update. Windows Update decides I need to download a bunch of controls. (Not) just once but multiple times where I get to see weird dialog boxes. Doesn't Windows update know some key to talk to Windows? Then I did the scan. This took quite some time and I was told it was critical for me to download 17megs of stuff. This is after I was told we were doing delta patches to things but instead just to get 6 things that are labeled in the SCARIEST possible way I had to download 17meg. So I did the download. That part was fast. Then it wanted to do an install. This took 6 minutes and the machine was so slow I couldn't use it for anything else during this time. What the heck is going on during those 6 minutes? That is crazy. This is after the download was finished. Then it told me to reboot my machine. Why should I do that? I reboot every night ? why should I reboot at that time? So I did the reboot because it INSISTED on it. Of course that meant completely getting rid of all my Outlook state. So I got back up and running and went to Windows Updale again. I forgot why I was in Windows Update at all since all I wanted was to get Moviemaker. So I went back to Microsoft.com and looked at the instructions. I have to click on a folder called WindowsXP. Why should I do that? Windows Update knows I am on Windows XP. What does it mean to have to click on that folder? So I get a bunch of confusing stuff but sure enough one of them is Moviemaker. So I do the download. The download is fast but the Install takes many minutes. Amazing how slow this thing is. At some point I get told I need to go get Windows Media Series 9 to download. So I decide I will go do that. This time I get dialogs saying things like "Open" or "Save". No guidance in the instructions which to do. I have no clue which to do. The download is fast and the install takes 7 minutes for this thing. So now I think I am going to have Moviemaker. I go to my add/remove programs place to make sure it is there. It is not there. What is there? The following garbage is there. Microsoft Autoupdate Exclusive test package, Microsoft Autoupdate Reboot test package, Microsoft Autoupdate testpackage1. Microsoft AUtoupdate testpackage2, Microsoft Autoupdate Test package3. Someone decided to trash the one part of Windows that was usable? The file system is no longer usable. The registry is not usable. This program listing was one sane place but now it is all crapped up. But that is just the start of the crap. Later I have listed things like Windows XP Hotfix see Q329048 for more information. What is Q329048? Why are these series of patches listed here? Some of the patches just things like Q810655 instead of saying see Q329048 for more information. What an absolute mess. Moviemaker is just not there at all. So I give up on Moviemaker and decide to download the Digital Plus Package. I get told I need to go enter a bunch of information about myself. I enter it all in and because it decides I have mistyped something I have to try again. Of course it has cleared out most of what I typed. I try (typing) the right stuff in 5 times and it just keeps clearing things out for me to type them in again. So after more than an hour of craziness and making my programs list garbage and being scared and seeing that Microsoft.com is a terrible website I haven't run Moviemaker and I haven't got the plus package. The lack of attention to usability represented by these experiences blows my mind. I thought we had reached a low with Windows Network places or the messages I get when I try to use 802.11. (don't you just love that root certificate message?) When I really get to use the stuff I am sure I will have more feedback. When Seattle Pi recently asked Gates about the email, he replied, "There's not a day that I don't send a piece of e-mail ... like that piece of e-mail. That's my job."     - Vista Repair Install In wanting to do a repair install (keeping existing programs etc), on running Recovery CD, I get the message............ "Upgrade has been disabled vand cannot be started.     - Dell Inspiron Upgrade to Vista I have just upgraded a Dell Inspiron with XP home SP2 to Vista Business. It was working okay, but when coming out of hibernation, the screen would just go blue with white lines and shut down. Anyone noticed that the DreamScene video vid7999.mpg (leaves blowing in the
wind) has a considerable big spot near the center of the screen that is
frozen at all times and the tree moves but not the leaves. I downloaded the
package several times but no change it must be the video itself. Anyone?
