    - Slow boot .. .DVD drive the cause I dont have sata DVD drive as first boot drive ( hard drive is 1st ) yet Vista still insists on looking at whatever is in the drive ( usually some game DVD ) and the boot time is very slow.     - Java Applet Disconnects - AOL In AOL when trying to view a European city webcam, the Java applet indicates it is "connecting" then it indicates "disconnecting." Any ideas what is causing this? I use Java with other applications with no problem and previously the webcam with java has functioned ok. I asked a friend to check it out on his computer and he had no problem.     - A dual head wake up issue: black screen. I found a serious problem with my laptop. I searched on internet for this issue for a long time but it seems like no body encounters this problem. Here's the details to reproduce the problem: 1. Connect a monitor to the laptop and extend the desktop to the monitor; 2. Unplug the monitor; 3. Before the screen setting applies successfully, close the laptop to make it turns into sleep mode; 4. Open the laptop to wake it up; Then you will find everything is right except the screen on the laptop. It will be black -- no mouse point, no windows, no desktop, even the backlight is off. I took a long time to figure out what's up. And finally I found that the system set the external monitor as primary monitor in this case. Since there's no output on screen, I can't do anything like setting the primary monitor to laptop screen again. In fact, this will also happen in Windows XP. However, I can press CRT/LCD switch key to fix up this issue in XP but not in Vista. It seems that Vista disabled the CRT/LCD key when there is no external monitor. That makes me crazy every time! What I can do with it, is press the power button on the laptop for a long time to turn off the power directly. Is this a known issue? Is there already a update for this issuue?     - Extra CD Drive suddenly shows up on Windows Explorer Recently an extra CD Drive as "CD Drive(G:)" has shown up on the Windows Explorer. There are two DVD Drives[DVD Drive(X:) and DVD Drive(Y:)] and they are still shown as used to be but I have never added the third one.     - Taskbar, desktop and start menu keep disappearing After I turn on, it all settles down, then at various points, usually either when I turn on Explorer or Messenger, I loose the taskbar, desktop and start menu and cant get them back. Sometimes though it happens almost as soon as everything first appears but I have found that the longer I dont do any actions, the longer it lasts when I start using it. I didn't load my Vista upgrade until recently when I decided to set up a dual-boot configuration. The setup went well and after re-partitioning my hard drive, I loaded Vista. When booting up, I get the screen asking which system I want to use...XP or Vista. If I select Vista, everything works as it should. However, if I select XP, a screen comes up telling me that "Windows failed to start. To fix the problem: 1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer. 2. Choose your language settings and click 'Next'. 3. Click 'Repair your computer'. This is followed by; File: \rrtldr, Status: 0xc000000f, Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt. I have tried numerous times to restart the computer using the "Windows XP Professional Operating System Disc" that was supplied with my machine in order to follow the above instructions to fix the problem. No joy! The system does not recognize the OS disc in the drive and instead boots normally again asking me which system I want to use.     - DVD drives Problem Greetings, Some months ago I installed Vista Ultimate 32bit over XP. It has been working OK since then however just a few days ago, the Sony DVD drives (a DVD-rw and DVD-r) ceased being identified by their model numbers to be labeled as generic 'cd drives". I have tried a few things in 'System" such as forcing a new identification through Scan for Hardware Changes and Driver Update but the problem remains. Following a suggestion generated by Vista, I uninstalled the drive for the burner and tried to reinstall it. It failed.     - Vista SP1 - Dell Inspiron 531 Have just successfully installed SP1 on my Vista Home Premium Dell Inspiron - Dual core AMD, 2GB RAM, Nvidia Graphics card. Windowsupdate was not offering me SP1 (Realtek HD Audio Drivers issue I believe) so I download the 400mb+ version of SP1. Before installing:- a) Update Realtek HD Audio drivers from http://tinyurl.com/yjvyhr b) Uninstalled Logitech Pro 5000 web cam c) Removed UPS usb sensor cable d) Unplugged all other usb devices e) Ran Windows Update twice (first time got yet another update for NVIDIA and older REALTEK drivers (but from Microsoft) - so decided to let windows have its preferences in this respect. The second time to see if any other updates turned up or indeed is SP1 was suddenly available - alas not a sausage) f) Backed up all important data to external drive g) Shut down extraneous services in Task Pane - stop AV resident shield service h) Run SP1 and go and make tea and return 45 mins later The whole process took about an hour, was seamless and I was able to reinstall the Logitek cam from drivers offered me by Windows update in no time at all. Post install my PC is running really well and, so far, there are no issues at all. Hope this is of some help to others wanting to take the plunge and install SP1. Steve Tag: SP1 Downloaded?     - Windows Defender and Blocked Programs I just installed Vista Ultimate. Everything so far is running pretty good. Only problem I have is a startup program that I have installed and have been running for probably 10 years. It is updated regularly and is updated for Vista. I have read through several posts regarding Defender, but can't find anything about adding a program to the allowed list. One KB Article says to click on Always Allow in the Action Window, but I am either not looking at the Action Window, I am assuming it is the tray icon that shows what programs are being blocked, or Always Allow isn't an option. I open Defender, the program is listed there as "Not Yet Specified". I go to Tools > Options and have added the program to the "Do not scan these files or locations" area but it is still being picked up when the computer starts or reboots. So next I go to the "Allowed Items" section under Tools, but there is no option of choosing what I want to allow.     - Boot failure for about 1 in 5 starts On my brand new Dell Precision laptop with Vista Business x64, I find that about 1 in 5 starts gets as far as the green progress/activity indicator bar then brings up a completely black screen but never progresses to the giant orb so that I can log in. Rebooting then brings up the suggestion to enter startup repair which I do and which has always (so far at least) solved the problem. The machine then boots normally. Any idea what is causing these intermittent boot failures? Any way to fix them?     - Blue Screen error code 0x100000c5 Hi everybody, Any ideas how to fix a blue screen with error code 0x100000c5? I have this brand-new computer HP with Vista Home (not even a month old). I bought the upgrade to Vista Buisness, but it upgraded it to Vista Ultimate. Now, everytime that I: 1. have an application that requires attention, like for example: * open Notepad, * write something, * go to File -> Save 2. Ask for a shut down, 3. A black screen appears saying that there are open applications and that I will loose info if I continue, but I click on the shutdown button anyway, Then: * The next time I try to turn the computer on I get a blue screen just before the User Logon screen, with an error code of 0x100000c5 (0x00, 0x02, 0x01, 0x81ce88d9). * The next time I try to turn the computer, there is a 50% chances I get the blue screen again. * The third time I try to turn the computer almost always work. ... HOWEVER ... If I first close all open applications and then shut down the computer, everything works well. This tells me that this is not a hardware or driver issue. You can click on Start > Control Panel > System. It will tell you if you are
running SP1. If not, you might give it a try again. I've had an installation
of SP1 say successful, but it didn't work. Had to install it again, and it
worked just fine the second time.
