On startup, my laptop goes into a huge amount of disk activity to about 70%
of processing power for several minutes to the point I cannot access
programs until it finishes, I have edited the startup via msconfig but this
still happens with no processors running. Any ideas what may be causing
this?

Go to Administrative Tools > Reliability and Performance Monitor and on the
right, click on the drop-down arrow to see what program/service is
accessing/using the CPU, Hard Disk, Network or Memory.
