    - Creating ISO CDs with Vista Hi guys, first of all sorry for my english. I tried to burn an empty CD with Windows Vista (Ultimate SP1): in the "Prepare media" window, i selected "Mastered CD", then i copied some files to D (where D is the drive letter of my recorder), and clicked "Burn CD".     - Side Bar A very small problem compared to some of you here but........ I think the side bar is great - nice feature BUT why does it keep disappearing on my computer? It is there on the desktop when I first switch on computer and then when I open 3-4 windows and then click on the desk top icon and go back to desktop - it has disappeared! And yet if I minimize the windows and go back to desktop this way - there it is!     - Vista versus XP Today a suggestive article in Marketwatch.com mentioned the demise of Vista operating systems. It was pointed out that this is unlikely due to the overwhelming brilliant and costly staff who developed and marketed this costly venture. I am suggesting a more practical approach to this situation. Buy Apple. The message is clear. Big business is unbending in their approach to this software. The Lemming approach is in high gear. So for the Barack Obama movement in operating software to take hold, you need the candidate. Treasure your XP (A statement I thought I would never utter) and move to the most logical system available. Apple OS is bought in quantity will send a message to the bottom line that Microsoft recognizes, shareholder value.     - UAC and scripting What is Microsofts solution if you run vbscripts for administrative tasks and these are affected by UAC ? Swicthing UAC off requires a restart, once to disable and then once to enable UAC once script has finished running, which hardly makes the administrative change transparent to the user. Group policies are handy to do this, and was a good idea but the question is the restart thats required. You can turn it off completely and leave it off which sounds like the best idea, but I'm really curious about Microsoft's take on this ? There must be some big companies using scripts out there.     - Blocked Traffic My Security blocks the following traffic when comming out of SLEEP MODE. Windows Networking (1) out; IGMP Out: LLMNR: UPnP. This only happens on Vista and not XP with same programs Internet Security is F-Secure supplied by ISP Embarq. Only happens when comming out of sleep mode, not at restart or other times. Always the same 4 traffic groups. Embarq support does not know answer. Any help as to what it is or what to do whould be appreciated.     - New "C" Drive Hello, if i install a new drive, which is to be a replacement for a failing drive, can I get away with just copying the contents off the old one onto the new one, then installing that? I seem to remember something about MBR etc. How will Vista react if I do this, will it require reactivation? Will I have to reinstall all programs that are on the other hard drives?     - Vista SP1 question for an MVP please I have been waiting for Windows Update to offer SP1 and it has not happened yet. I am in no rush for SP1, but am beginning to wonder if it will ever be automatically offered. Should I continue to wait, or should I manually download it from the MS site. My concern is the update process might know something about my system that could cause me problems after a manual download. Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you.     - Application installation problem I'm posting this here because I can't get any solution from teh software company. I run and rely on Xara Xtreme Pro graphic software. I've used various versions for over 10 years and currently run v3.3 very successfully on my Vista Ultimate 32 bit machine. I get a number of errors at 99% install: these inform me that the files which reside in c:/program files/common files/xara are "not found". When I then try to run the installed program I get an "internal program error 2625.k.me.ps". If I then try to run v3.3 I get the same program error! To get back to a working version of v3.3 I've had to do a disk image restore. I've disabled my AV (AVG Pro), spyware (Spyware Doctor & Windows Defender) and closed WinPatrol for good measure (it monitors registry access attempts)... there is nothing there which I could imagine would cause a problem.     - Printing hang up If I send a acrobat, word or excel file to print, If i close the application before the printing progress dialog box reaches 100%, the process of printing hangs an I have to cancel printing. In XP and Office 2003, we could do that, but the printing processing would keep working even if you close the app. Do you guys know if this is a bug, normal or if there is any option to fix this?     - Move folders and remain source folder structure In Windows Vista (I have Home Premium) when we move a folder to another that has some sub folders or files with the same name, appears a dialog box asking if you want to replace, etc. But even if I choose to replace all, it remais the folder struvture, empty (it moved the files to destination), in the folder I just moved, and I have always to delete that folder structure in the end.     - Unable to open iTunes site. Internet exp. stops working and restarts My daughter has Vista and the computer is almost 1 year old. She ha always been able to access iTunes and has used it daily. All of th sudden iTunes stopped working correctly, we uninstalled it and now ca not even get on their site to try and reinstall because her interne stops working and restarts with no solution for the problem.     - unable to carryout silent registry import - Windows Vista I'm trying to import a batch of reg settings from a personal drive on the network. The syntax is correct regedit /s h:\MyRegSetting.reg Even when I test the reg file with a manual import (Right-click, merge..) it still fails. Yet runs fine when run from a local drive. :mad: Normally this wouldn't bother me but I need to loop through a few settings for about 300 users. Any ideas?     - folder view resets itself :: BUG! I know every one here has this default Vista (even XP) problem. The problem is that the folder customization / layout never stays the way you set it, even minutes later after closing/re-opening explorer. This is driving me insane. For example, in explorer under Computer I choose large icons. Close, re-open its back to list view instead. Sometimes other folders will somehow change views by themselves too. This is really annoying. Someone suggested a fix months ago, but I do not remember how. Would appreciate tips on this. I *do* already have checked on "remember folder's view settings" enabled as well.     - Run Vista from an external HD (dual boot with XP on an internal HD) Hi, I am curious if Vista can be run from one of those portable external hard drives that I see in Staples, etc... rather than have to install another internal hard drive.     - help! ok here's the story... i was messin around on the computer.... something.. umm.. wet.. got on the keyboard... (i have a laptop) i wiped it up fast.... thing is.. before i wiped it up.. i didn't turn off my laptop..     - Acccounts in Vista -I'm having trouble I asked this question at the end of a longer thread I'd started, and I guess it is old news so no one looks to see that I've taken advice, but need some more. In short. I've been about a year on my Vista home prem. machine, and have not set up administrator account and so I am using it with its power that I don't quite understand, which they tell me leaves me more open to invaders etc.. So they convinced me. I tried to start a new user account, but saw that it does not have all the files and programs that I depend on. It seems to say, Start over and do all that stuff you did over a year's time all over again. Question: How do I make a user account with what I have? I'd think I could just call what I have now a user account and create an administrator account beside it, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do it.     - PC's froze this morning So I have two computers using Vista SP1 and both get turned off every night. This morning started up the first pc and everything went fine during boot and log-in. Then when I tried to start an application the p.c froze with the round "hour-glass" timer showing. Didin't think much of it. I re-booted and everything was fine. Started up the 2nd p.c. a while later and exactly the same problem, only this time I went for the "start" menu first and not an application. Now I think this is quite odd. The same problem on different p.c.'s on the same day using the same operating system. Re-booted the 2nd p.c. and again everything is okay. Anyone else have the same problem today?     - Vista Firewall turns itself off.... I'm really at the end of my tether with this issue - have a laptop which has windows Vista installed. Whenever I boot up the Windows Firewall is turned on. However, towards the end of the boot process, the Windows Firewall turns itself off, almost as if when a program loads it knocks it out. Is there anyway I can do a walk thru' of the boot up process so I can see if I can capture which program or process is doing it? At my wits end. Tag: Backup of the TPM Tag: 373041

    - Install vista via Bootable USB drive Hi I had a fire a few months back which burnt my Acer T180 case. I've managed to change the case and get all the parts working again except the DVD rom which was melted and beyond repair. As my whole house is wireless I'm not really bothered about getting a new DVD rom - my other PC controls the network and has a DVD writer inside. Once vista is installed the network will take care of everything. My problem now is how do I reinstall Vista on a PC that has no DVD rom to read my Vista DVD. OK I could swap my DVD around for a few hours by its covered in warranty void stickers and as its new I don't want to risk anything. Is there anyway to convert a Bootable DVD into a Bootable USB drive? I've got a 4 Gig stick which should be fine. My motherboard also boots from USB. I've managed to make a copy of the vista DVD into ISO image but can't find a program that will put the ISO onto a USB drive. Any ideas. I wanna encrypt the Vista Ultimate partition with BitLocker, but
i'm preoccupied: what happens if my PC breaks down?

How could i restore the encrypted files from another PC?
What keys are needed?
And how can i backup them?

It seems it's very easy!
I've to put the encrypted HD on the other computer, then
open bitlocker and choose "Unlock volume".

The cryptographic key specified while encrypting the drive.

It's stored in the TPM of the broken computer, and on an
external media, specified during the encrypting process.
