Having trouble with external disk drives in USB enclosures
I know that this isn't the right newsgroup for my question, but I hope
that someone can suggest anNG where I might find an answer. I have four
Maxtor IDE drives (one new, three previously used in XP and 98 boxes. I
have house brand CompUSA and an Acomdata USB enclosures. I have been
successful in getting Vista to recognize the existence of three of these
drives; I can access only one--one of the old ones. I hope that someone
can suggest the proper place I might inquire. I have tried alt.comp.usa,
but my post is the only one to that group since June 4--obviously not a
very active spot. Any help will be appreciated.

Help - my computer keeps turning on by itself
I am a complete novice and my sons computer keeps turning on by itself after

Can't delete backup files
Vista crashed twice on me and I restored it twice. Both times it created a
huge backup of most of the C drive and stored them in a folder called BACKUP
on the root of C: These files contain copies of the Programs directory and
the Windows directory that I cannot delete. I tried deleting them with
elevated privileges and that didn't work. I reinstalled the operating
system from the cd that came with my computer and they're still there. The
computer will boot up and run but it doesn't run right and strange things are
happening on it. I'm sure it's because I now have 3 copies of the Programs
and Windows directories. How can I get rid of those Backup files? Tag: Acess is denied (0x800700005) Tag: 406782
moving my in-box
now that i can find the answers to my questions (thank y'all), i can go back
to a question i asked when i first signed into windows.
when i first signed into windows mail, it imported all of my inbox from my
yahoo account. it is extremely important to me, to put all of those letters
back into yahoo, to integrate with other mail and info in yahoo.
is there a simple way to export them to yahoo, or, in yahoo, import them
from windows mail? it seems there should be, since they got transferred over
with one fell swoop... forwarding to myself more than two at a time is very
unreliable... things seem to get lost in hyperspace. and since we're talking
of several hundred letters, two at a time will be slow and tedious.
thank you for any light you can shed.
and by the way, in previous answers and give and take about where to look up
my Qs&As, someone was referring to the OP. is that me? what does it stand
for?
again, thanks...

Corrupted Product Activation Key
Today is July 21, 2008. I downloaded and installed an update from Microsoft
today, which proceeded to make my computer unusable because the product key
has suddenly become invalid. This is only the second time this summer a
downloaded "update" has crashed my machine, but for a computer that was brand
new in November, I'm a little concerned. Can anyone help me recover my
computer without doing a full re-installation from scratch? Can anyone from
Microsoft help me via remote assist? (It would appear that function might
still work, though I don't know for sure.)
If I ever get my machine working again I will turn off automatic updates for
Windows because they cause more problems than they solve. Thanks in advance

MDI broken with Aero
There is a problem with the MDICLIENT window class on Aero. When I maximize
an MDI application and maximize a child window, the child window is 4-pixels
short on the right side, showing the gray MDI client window below. If the
application isn't maximized this problem doesn't exist. It only happens with
Aero; with "Windows Vista Basic" it isn't there, nor is it there on any of
Windows 95 through XP.
This isn't just my app that does this. I dug out the IconPro sample code
from an old copy of the Microsoft SDK and it exhibits the same problem.
I've found a hack to get around the problem by processing the
WM_GETMINMAXINFO message, but that introduces other problems... which can be
solved with other hacks, which in turn create additional problems, and so on,
and after chasing my tail for several days it occurred to me that I shouldn't
have to do this and MS should have a fix.
This may not be the best place to post this, but I have no idea where else
to go (if you do know, please say so). In 20+ years I've been lucky enough
not to run into any similar problems with a MS OS that's well over a year old! Tag: Acess is denied (0x800700005) Tag: 406731

'Windows Explorer is Not Responding' - Help!
Hi. I have this problem I'm hoping I can get ANY help with.
For the last month or so, I've been having a problem with Windows
Explorer. At random times, and often several times once it begins, my
computer freezes and a message comes up: "Windows Explorer is Not
Responding." I'll be working in one program and want to bring up
another, and out of nowhere, I get the hourglass icon and not a single
program that is open will respond. In fact, my entire Start menu won't
come up.
After repeatedly clicking on the program, or on anything on my task
bar, the 'Windows Explorer is Not Responding' sign comes up and gives
me these options: Close the program or Wait for the program to respond.
And only if I click on 'Close the Program' will it activate, tell me
'Windows is checking for a solution to the problem' and after about
five seconds of the programs I am using freezing completely, everything
returns to normal.
When this happens, Ctrl+Alt+Del will work but the best I can do from
there is start the Task Manager and it simply tells me "Explorer.exe"
is not responding. What exactly is Windows Explorer, and how do I fix
this?
If it helps, I have Windows Vista Home Basic on a Toshiba laptop, and
the program I most recently added to it since this problem began is the
Microsoft Zune Program, but this happens whether I use Zune or not.
Aside from that, there really doesn't seem to be any pattern.
I hope I provided enough information and I'm sorry I'm not more
tech-savvy. Thanks!

6 to 4 Adapter - Please Explain
I use Vista Home Premium on a Dell PC XPS 420. In Device Manger my 6 to 4
adapter had a yellow caution symbol next to it. The Dell tech told me I did
not need that adapter and disabled it. Recently I have had network adapter
issues in that when my computer comes out of the Sleep mode, it takes maybe 3
to 4 minutes to get an I.E. connection. So, I thought I might try to enable
the 6 to 4 adapter to see if that would help my problem. When I did that I
got a message saying â??Windows cannot load the drivers. Code 31â??
1. What is the purpose of the 6 to 4 adapter?
2. Do I need to have it working?
3. If so, how can I get the drivers?
4. Do you think the 6 to 4 adapter could be causing my I. E. problem?

Vista temp or unecessary files
Where exactly are all the temp/unecessary files I could delete from the

installing all the programs I have, 1.1 gb is all I have left. I have a 4gb

could delete? Since I applied all the updates, including SP1 and office

Vista Aero causing controls to vanish unpredictably
I am developing an app that has custom controls in a window that
behave just fine under XP and under Vista with non-Aero themes. When
Aero is on however, the window becomes transparent (see through)
sometimes and the controls will often vanish (maybe becoming totally
transparent). I have used SetWindowLong() and
SetLayeredWindowAttributes() to turn off any transparency attributes
or opacity (in case it was inheriting these from somewhere) to no
effect. I've turned off the "glass" feature in Aero settings to no
effect. Invalidating the controls or the window programatically (for
a repaint) does not have any effect, in fact it seems to be what
triggers the controls from being lost from sight. Resizing the window
manually forces the whole shebang to be redrawn correctly however!
My hardware should not be the problem as it is new and fast (great
video card etc... with high Vista rating 5.9 for graphics Aero desktop
performance).
Any ideas on why Aero might be causing me grief, and what I need to
try to solve my problem?

The always pyschotic raning of the Useful Idiots Club
Unless you're new to this newsgroup or have been living in a cave for
the last year you are already aware of the three utter morons that
infest this group and constantly spread lies and use vile language.
Frank, Yanaire and Spanky deMonkey (all posting under multiple
names)in some feeble attempt to hide who they are quite simply two
legged filth spreading cockroaches that leave a trail of slime
wherever they post. They have no morals, no character, clearly no
brains, nothing of value at all, they are beyond redemption or being
reasoned with. They use this newsgroup as their personal open air
toilet spreading lies and using vulgar language because these
obviously mentally ill retards are totally incapable of being reasoned
with, using logic, facts or even trying to have normal discussion.
As proof of that you only need look at any of their posts. They are
always void of all material facts, filled with personal attacks, hate,
sprinkled with vile, vulgar language and repeated deliberate lies.
What would make any normal human being do this?
That's is the point. No normal person would conduct themselves as
these three idiots do day after day. Especially not for over a year,
yet that's exactly what these three fools have done. That strongly
suggests they are psychopaths, each having his own weird psychopathic
personality confirming they are suffering from severe mental
retardation.
Further proof these buffoons are indeed crazy is offered by what they
themselves claim. The stated purpose of these three loons is to "clean
up" this newsgroup. For these clueless simpletons to say that is like
pissing in the bottle of water you're going to drink or pouring
gasoline on a fire, since Frank, Yanaire and Spanky are by far the
most obnoxious ill behaved posters in this group and their posts are
what causes the noise level to go through the roof. Everyone
understands that, expect of course for them.
What is really bugging these barbaric buffoons and causes them to
daily show raucous behavior is they have decided it is their right to
decide who can say what. Laughable I know, but remember we're dealing
with mentally ill individuals that can't be reasoned with. These
morons have got it in their heads nobody is allowed to be critical of
Vista, Windows or Microsoft. These idiots actually think you must
worship Microsoft to post here. If anyone reports problems brings up
issues, these ill manored idiots will scream, yell, lie, bitch, whine
and start to throw their feces around like rabid monkeys in some
effort to silence those that speak the truth.
Well guess what dickheads, the truth can't be silenced. The more you
idiots squeal, the more obvious it becomes who the liars are. So by
all means continue to act up, act stupid, because it works against you
and anyone new to this group soon learns what psychopaths you really
are that most have already labeled you as because that is what Frank,
Yanaire, Spanky are. Tag: Acess is denied (0x800700005) Tag: 406532

Sleep often crashes Vista (Dell D630, 64-bit Ultimate)
I just recently moved from a D610 to a D630 and decided to go Vista 64-bit.
When put the computer into Sleep mode (Hybrid Sleep is turned off by the
way) here is what happens:
1. Screen goes blank immediately
2. Hard drive activity for a minute or so
3. Sometimes it goes into sleep mode but usually it just turns off
In the case when it just turns off, which is most of the time, then I when I
turn it back on it prompts to boot into Safe mode if I want to, indicating
windows didn't shut down properly.

it and how to fix it? Tag: Acess is denied (0x800700005) Tag: 406526

Do Not Show Thumbnails in "open" and "save as" dialog boxes
I have been searching for a way to change Vista's default behavior in "open"

very frustrating. Vista's default view in dialog boxes seems to be the
thumbnail view. You can change it inside each box when it opens, but closing
and re-opening the box restores the default view. This is extremely
frustrating if you like the detailed list view instead. I do not want to see

Just Got The Dell "Back To School" Catalog... Linux???? Where is it hiding????
Not a mention of Linux anywhere in the booklet.
Windows Vista is everywhere and there are some pretty decent deals,
especially on notebooks.
There is a nice pink one that would be perfect for Roy Schestowitz, Martii
or HPT!!
It has a $25.00 premium though, which is a rip IMHO.
You'll never lose it though, unlike a black Thinkpad which blends in with
everything.
So where is Linux?
This is one of Dell's biggest times of the year, along with the Christmas
season but yet Linux is once again MIA.
Poor Linux...

Windows Backup
Vista Business 32bit on a 3 machine network. The other two machines are
running WinXP Pro W/SP3.
I want to back up the Vista machine to a USB HD on one of the XP machines.
Vista's backup utility keeps telling me:
"The network share could not be accessed for the following reason:
You need Full Control permission for the network share. Make the user a
co-owner of the share with Full Control. The network share cannot be on a
computer running Windows XP Home. (0x8100002A)
Please ensure that the network location is valid."
Now, the USB drive is shared fully, it is a mapped drive on the Vista
machine. The Vista machine can read/write to the USB drive in normal usage.
The network share is not on a Windows XP Home machine.
WTF is wrong with MS? This doesn't need to be this damned difficult. It
never was before. Tag: Acess is denied (0x800700005) Tag: 406485
Permissions gone
Friend of mine on an Acer laptop with Vista home suddenly found his
permissions disabled. I am at a loss as to how this happened or how
to reset the admin privledges ?
Any thoughts ?

*** STOP: 0x0000007B
Having upgraded my system to 64 bit i decided to buy and install Windows
Vista.
date: 13 April 2008, 10:49:00
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home basic
System Man: ASUSTek Computer Inc
Sys Model: M2NSLI
BIOS:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
L1 Data Cache: 64Kb
L1 Inst Cache: 64Kb
L2 Cache: 1024Kb
Family Model: S
MMX: Yes
E MMX 3DNow: Yes Extended 3DNc
Mem: 2048MB RAM
Apart from the problems of software compatibility ie. Much of the
software I use will not run on it and the blurry fonts even with anti
alias off it's been reasonably stable. Currently I wish I had bought
64bit XP as the problems, limitations and 'auto' features in Vista are
very irritating and hard to turn off. A few days ago I decided to
increase the size of the partition containing Vista, since then it has
refused to boot up at all, either to normal or safe mode. The boot
process begins then a blue screen is displayed with the following text:
'If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart
your computer.
If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer, remove any newly installed hard
drives or
hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly
configured, and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive
corruption,
and the restart your computer.

0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)'
I have run an up to date virus checker over the partition, rebuilt the
partition table, reinstalled the MBR, de fragmented the entire disk, run
DSKCHK /F, tried the rescue from the CD, tried re-installing drivers,
searched the knowledge base and many community forums, all without
locating a solution.
