Much of the software I use will not run on it and the blurry fonts even with anti alias off it's been reasonably stable. Currently I wish I had bought 64bit XP as the problems, limitations and 'auto' features in Vista are very irritating and hard to turn off. A few days ago I decided to increase the size of the partition containing Vista, since then it has refused to boot up at all, either to normal or safe mode. The boot process begins then a blue screen is displayed with the following text: 'If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check for viruses on your computer, remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured, and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and the restart your computer. Technical information: *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xFFFFFA60005AF900, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)' I have run an up to date virus checker over the partition, rebuilt the partition table, reinstalled the MBR, de fragmented the entire disk, run DSKCHK /F, tried the rescue from the CD, tried re-installing drivers, searched the knowledge base and many community forums, all without locating a solution.     - Windows explorer crashing I just saw another post with the same problem I've had for a month or so. I thought I would elaborate a bit more. Currently using Windows Vista Business, sp1. Windows Explorer, Not IE7, will put up an error message (Windows explorer has encountered a problem and will restart). Blue screen comes on then Windows Explorer immediately restarts. Any other program running, such as IE7, Word, FoxIt Reader, will remaining running while Windows restarts in the background. The whole reset takes about 3 seconds. The crash is usually associated with doing "file work", such as moving or renaming files within folders. Any operations or renaming, etc. that immediately precede the crash are completed correctly. I have removed any context menu add-ons but that seems to make no difference. This is not hardware related. I was wondering if Windows Explorer can be reinstalled but downloading its exe file from somewhere.     - Complete PC Backup error 80070079 I am running Ultimate on HP Blackbird. I purchased a Cavalry 500 GB external HDD 6 months ago and everything worked fine. I could do both complete pc backup and all files backup. Now, I can only do all files backup and get this error (semaphore time out) during complete pc backup. The cables are fine, and I get the error with either SATA or USB connection. Cavalry does not use a driver and relies on Vista. Any help would be greatly appreciated!     - Complete PC Backup error 80070079 I am running Windows Vista Ultimate on an HP Blackbird. I purchased a 500 GB external HDD from Cavalry about 6 months ago (pre SP1) and had no problems doing either complete PC backup or backup all files. Now I can still backup all files, but cannot do a complete PC backup and get the above error code (semaphore time out). The cable is fine, and I get the error with either SATA or USB. Cavalry has no device driver for the disk and relies on Vista, and like I said, it used to work fine. A Google search shows some others have had the problem, but no solution.     - BSOD - Driver IRQL not less or equal - 0x000000D1 - KMXCF.SYS Hi, I'm a very new user of this forum and haven't posted before, but here goes (fingers crossed I get it right!) .... I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop running Vista Business (SP1) & M/S Office 2003. I have just started to get the following problem which seems to occur when email starts to be downloaded, Outlook downloads the first 5 or so the I get a 'blue screen of death', with the following text - *Driver_IRQL_not_less_or_equal* *STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x87800000, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xA7F44970)* *KmxCF.sys - Address A7F44970 base at A7F32000, Datestamp 47171068* I had to photograph the BSOD to get this information becuase it whizzed through it's physical memory dump in less than 3 seconds! Once the machine is re-booted I can access Control Panel, Hard Disks, Printers & some applications but as soon as I try to receive email (outlook 2003) or connect to the internet it crashes - joy! I've surfed to try and find some answers and come up with ideas but nothing which is exactly the same as my error and no suggestions as to how to fix this. One thread has suggested CA Security is the problem (KmxCF.sys file) and yes, I'm running CA Security Suite 2008. I have used this to run a virus and trojen check and come up with zero problems, I have also checked for updates and mine is totally up to date, as well as checking their site for details (none, as expected from the CA site, they are useless at helping solve problems!) Please, please can anyone help me - I'm now on the 8th BSOD today and can't get to important work emails which I need to reply to.     - Vista Brightness control stops working after resuming from sleep I am using HP laptop dv6703. When windows vista(home premium) resumes after sleep, Its brightness control stops working. It does not changes either with keyboard shortcuts or from brightness control settings in power options, so to change brightness again, I have to restart laptop again, then it works fine (changes with options with keyboard shortcuts and power options).     - 0x80004005 and Media Player Ever since I started using Vista, I have had a problem with Media Player not opening. This is a new computer that came with Vista Home installed. I found a solution requiring me to go into Command Prompt with these commands which I have to do about once a week. 1. type regsvr32 jscript.dll and then press enter. you should get a confirmation message. 2. repeat and type regsvr32 vbscript.dll and then press enter. These have worked great until now. I recently did a Vista update and am wondering if the update is causing the problem. Now when I try the command prompts the first step works fine but I get the 0x80004005 error with the second. I am very frustrated with Vista and Media Player. Can this be fixed or is there some other program that will play my video files? I would greatly appreciate any help. All I have seen so far related to this error is e-mail.     - Which Level of User Account to Use for Software Installation?? I will soon have a new Dell computer with Vista Business. After the initial installation of Vista is completed, I will install some software programs such as the ESET NOD32 Antivirus program. Question: Should I start the installation of such a program in the Standard user account or the Administrator user account?     - Wireless internet - can't download anything Hello, I recently purchased a new notebook laptop with Windows Vista on it and also got wireless internet, but I can't download anything. For example, I can't download images I've recieved through e-mail. The save as box appears but when the download is complete, the box disappears and nothing is downloaded onto the laptop.     - Vista 64: Increasing number of partitions... I have 174GB of 'unallocated' space on my 1TB HDD. The HDD has partitions on it, plus the unallocated partition.     - Windows Photo Gallery VS Windows "Live" Photo Gallery On Windows Vista, there are two good new applications, Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Mail (not entirely new but new). But what confuses me is that there are "very" similar applications such as Windows "Live" Photo Gallery and Windows "Live" Mail. They are very, very similar but the "Live" series provides slightly more features. For example, there is "Create photo panorama" which is the sole reason why I installed it while I have Windows Photo Gallery. I don't understand why Microsoft keep both of them. Wouldn't it be much simpler and clear if Microsoft make only one version of them, then embed them on Windows Vista and let Windows XP users download freely from Windows Live site?     - Taskbar, small issue I have mytaskbar setup to always be on the top of other windows, but it isn't. It did this a while ago, but I fixed it by simply checking and unchecking that box in the taskbar properties and clicking apply. Now I cannot get it to stay on top at all.     - mscorwks.dll could not be loaded I'm running Vista Home Premium on a Dell XPS M1530. I had some file corruption which I fixed for the most part with running chkdsk among other things. But I still get the error "c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\mscorwks.dll could not be loaded" when trying to load the Dell Transfer Agent.exe and ECenter\EULALancher.exe. I've tried to uninstall microsoft.net framework 2.0 but it's not in my Add/Remove Programs list. When I try to just install the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86) it says the it's already part of the operating system. I've pretty much stumped Dell on this one.     - Gears of War shuts down at load screen GOW won't stay up. I've downloaded the patches, and still won't run. I have a: Gateway P173XL-FX laptop 4 Gig memory nVidia GEForce 8800 (gateway modified, of course) Windows Vista Ultimate, 64 bit I've tried downloading the latest nVidia drivers, but they won't load. nVidia tells me that Gateway modified the card, so nVidia's drivers can't be loaded. Diagnosis largely depends on making a clinical assessment, obtaining a thorough history, and ruling out other specific conditions associated with delusions.     - Problems with Service pack 1 Hi,Since installing SP1 firefox(and IE) keeps freezing on me and then dying all together.I could be browsing freely then the webpage will just freeze and the only way back is to restart my pc.I have had to do a system restore twice after installing SP1 and i have no problems without SP1,but once its installed again the problems begin.     - Print Servers w/ Vista Hello: I feel like a Dumb Bunny for asking this question, but I have spent hours trying to get two different Vista machines to connect to two different printers connected via an Airlink101 Print Server. The print server is connected to a Lan which has Win2K and WinXP machines. Everybody is happy with the print server except Vista. I can see the printers just fine, but when I try to connect I get a "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Make sure that you have typed the name correctly, and that the printer is connected to the network." If I cheat by typing in the printers name or IP address, I can actually add the printer and even set it to default, but then it fails on print.     - Uninstalling a Program Hello, I want to uninstall a program from Cyberlink. It is liisted in Programs and Features as PowerDVD. When i select Uninstall I first get the User Control Permission box and approve of it. Then there is a small box that says somethng aobut installing hte installer for PowerDVD 8. Then after about a minute that disappears and the Programs and Features apge has no notices on it. Then a box about 1 1/2 X 2 inches appears with the word Error in the upper left border. Below that, in the box, is a red circle with a white X through it. Next to that are the words "Can't Load SKUtil.dll (sic). tthere is OK below that and when it is clicked or time passes without actions hte box vanishes and the uninstall process terminates. What can I do to get around this roadblock? If I try to remove it from C: in computer I get a notice that I'll have to have permission.     - Vista .NET Framework 1.1, Service Pack 1 I was able to get a successful install of the subject framework. After about eight hours of frustration, I went part way with a possible route given by http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100. First, I deleted .NET Framework 1.1 software via "Add & Remove" in Control Panel. I restarted the system and re-installed 1.1 with no difficulty. Second, I then tried to re-install SP 1 via Windows Update. It took me two separate occasions, but the basic 1.1 update took first. Finally, I again restarted and checked Windows Update again.     - Speech recognition - integral Mic I have just got myself a new laptop with the new Windows Vista on it complete with the new speech recognition program. It also has an integral Mike or "Array" microphone so I was even more pleased at the fact that I did not need to buy one. The only problem that I have with this one, is that it is a bit too sensitive and when I ask it to stop listening and then the speech recognition bar goes to sleep, I find that any little background noise will set the bar to start listening again.     - MS SP1 free support... free of actual support! If this post survives then I would just like to relate my experiences with Microsoft's "free" post-SP1 support. I have been having a serious problem with System Restore since moving to SP1 so I emailed MS about it to take advantage of their free support. I was told I would receive a reply within 2 business days but none came until about a week later. Since then, it has been like pulling teeth to get ANY response from MS. Their first couple of attempts to resolve the issue failed and then the support technician assigned to the case "disappeared" where I didn't hear from him for 4 weeks. I kept emailing him until I finally received a reply from another technician who explained that the case had been escalated and that he would be looking after me from now on. Well, I had one message from him and now, some 5 weeks later, I am back at square one with no responses from MS whatsoever.     - Hope a new feature in the next version of Windows. In the Windows Vista explorer, there are many view modes. In "Details" mode, it looks like the columns are automatically determined by the system in accordance with the file types in the folder. But a software is imperfect. Sometimes Explorer shows very irrelevant colums. For example, it could show unncessary Date taken, Tags, Rating columns for a folder that contains downloaded movie clips while Date modified, Type, Size , which are what I want to see, are hidden. Of course I can manually change the columns displayed, but doing that everytime for many folders is time-consuming and tedious. I think it would be very nice if users can define a 'column presets' for Details mode and apply them as needed with just one click, in the next version of Windows. Strange thing going on here, Sometime in the last couple of weeks my updates for a) AV (nod32 b) defende c) mediacenter tv guide all fail. av errors out with cannot create temp fil mediacenter listing updates hang on 0 defender just fails. it seems to me like its something to do with the ProgramData folder. Save the files somewhere on the hard drive that both users have permissions
to access and alter.

Save files in Vista Public Folders.

Go to Menu > Help and Support and enter public folders for more info.
