try booting with
the windows cd and
select the recovery
console option.

(see using command console):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

then at the prompt
type and then enter

fixboot

then type and enter

chkdsk

then type and enter

exit

remove cd and try
booting to windows again.

What happen if you select Last Good known configuration , does it help you
to log on?

A repair install can be your option, but bear in mind if you have IE7
installed you will need to uninstall it!

Hi Malibu,
From your reply to DB, it seems to me your HDD clusters/sectors are
corrupted/damaged.
Try this article and see if it will help:
How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from
starting
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545
NOTE: you can copy/rename the config by attaching this HDD as salve to
another machine having the same Operating system Specs!

Also try to download the Hard drive Diagnostic tools from the HDD
manufacturer website and test the health of your hard drive.

HTH.

ok, well the problem
made itself visible.

that message pertains
to the registry hive/files.

you see after you ran
those commands from
the disk prompt, you
had fixed the disk errors.

now the next step is
to repair the registry files.

what it entails is to access
the disk system again with
the recovery console and
copy the basic registry hive
from its safe location and
replace the corrupted registry
files.

in doing so your windows
should run again.

the next step would then be
to locate a more up to date
registry and use it to replace
the basic one.

the up to date registry will have
all the data pertaining to
the programs installed and
windows should appear like
it was before the crash.

see part one then two on:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

-----------

it is unclear if you are using
any methods to maintain your
disk and file system. such
methodologies help avoid
issues like the one have now.
