Use of Windows Backup Utility
I have an external 300 GB drive dedicated to storing backup data. I also
want to periodically clean up that external drive and save the backed up data
on CD/DVD media. I would like to automatically schedule the Backup utility
to do a normal weekly backup of all data, system info etc plus append
incremental backups of this data on a daily basis. Presumably to restore
files etc the backup utility will recognise the date batches on my external
drive. However once this data is no longer on the external drive (having
been cleaned up and "copied" onto CD/DVD media) does the Backup Utility still
recognise the data on CD/DVD media for restoration purposes? Tag: IE7 toolbar moved to the left Tag: 803329
Status Bar in Explorer (not IE) not staying "checked"
I previously asked for help in the General area on this problem; got
one reply which did not fix the issue. the Subject I submitted was "Open
Window in Explorer in XP" in the NG:
"microsoft.public.windowsxp.general." I hope either Jordan who
responded, or someone else might have a fix for this. The "Apply to All
Folders" (which I love to use) does not fix this problem.
I will paste in my original inquiry to the problem:
I have a constant problem on one of my XP Pro workstations. The
bottom of the open window's Status Bar is not checked when the View menu
is clicked. I can click Status Bar, and the Status Bar appears on the
bottom as it is supposed to, but as soon as I even change folders within
the same window, the Status Bar goes away, and I must click on View and
Status Bar again to get the Status bar.
Could someone help me restore this feature of Windows Explorer
(Status Bar defaults as checked)?
Thanks,
John
I will paste in the previous response which did not work. Perhaps
someone has the fix for this problem:
>
> Try this John:
> Go to View > Status Bar. Then, without closing the window: Tools >
> Folder Options > View Tab > Press "Apply to All Folders". "OK" out of

What is Windows registry (Registry Keys)
Find this tutorial and more on http://thedotnetsource.blogspot.com
Reason of this project:
I wrote this tutorial in order to help the hundred of programmers
searching on the web for Windows registry.
This is an like introduction, if you are seeking how to use and deploy
the registry keys with Vb.net, just see the next tutorial (It'll be
tutorial 6).
In this tutorial I'll show what is the windows registry system and why
use it.
Project details:
1- What is Windows registry and why use it
2- How to read, write and change the registry
3- HIVES and their use
4- Definition of registry values
1- What is Windows registry and why use it.
You can compare the Windows registry to a database. It stores
informations related to Windows and other installed application on
your system, but also Hardware.
Think now if someone need to change the computer name via programming.
How can he do this?
Programmers can think of files (text files) to store the computer and
windows information. But when file get big and heavy, Database will be
more secure. And then they had (Windows builder) the choice of a
database "Windows Registry".
Microsoft Dot Net Frame 1.1 and higher have implemented a great
solution for registry on their classes. This will replace the hard
work and long lines of code that programmers have to write if they are
using Visual Studio 6.0 for example.
2- How to read, write and change the registry
Windows has a wonderful tool on it, named "Registry Editor". But you
won't find it, unless you open the System32 folder on the Windows
folder.
But we can easily run it through the execute command it the start
menu. Just type "regedit" (without quotes).
Now the registry editor will open.
Please before doing any changes on your registry make a backup.
To do a windows registry backup: File > Export > Give a name for the
file and select the All option box.
The backup may block your pc from working for a short period of time.
You'll see that there are 5 folder. Those are the main folder (named
hives) and you can't add another main folder.
Now you can select any folder and right click on it, then add a new
sub-folder or value.
By selecting any folder and right clicking, you'll find a list of
action that you can do.
If the action is blended (made not selectable), then either it's
impossible or you don't have the rights to do this action.
You need administrator rights to change registry keys.
3- HIVES (main registry folders) and their use
The registry is split into a number of logical sections named "hives",
those are the top main folder that can added, edited or renamed.
They all start with "HKEY" prefix.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
Stores information about registered applications, such as Associations
from File Extensions and OLE Object Class ID's tying them to the
applications used to handle these items.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Stores settings that are specific to the currently logged-in user. The
HKCU key is a link to the subkey of HKEY_USERS that corresponds to the
user; the same information is reflected in both locations. On Windows-
NT based systems, each users' settings are stored in their own files
called NTUSER.DAT and USRCLASS.DAT inside their own documents and
settings subfolder.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Abbreviated HKLM, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE stores settings that are general
to all users on the computer. On NT-based versions of Windows, HKLM
contains four subkeys, SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE and SYSTEM, that are
found within their respective files located in the %SystemRoot%
\System32\Config folder. A fifth subkey, HARDWARE, is volatile and is
created dynamically, and as such is not stored in a file. Information
about system hardware drivers and services are located under the
SYSTEM subkey, whilst the SOFTWARE subkey contains software and
windows settings.
HKEY_USERS
Contains subkeys corresponding to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys for each
user registered on the machine.
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG
Contains information gathered at runtime; information stored in this
key is not permanently stored on disk, but rather regenerated at boot
time.
4- Definition of registry values
Binary Value
REG_BINARY
Raw binary data. Most hardware component information is stored as
binary data and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal
format.
DWORD Value
REG_DWORD
Data represented by a number that is 4 bytes long (a 32-bit integer).
Many parameters for device drivers and services are this type and are
displayed in Registry Editor in binary, hexadecimal, or decimal
format. Related values are DWORD_LITTLE_ENDIAN (least significant byte
is at the lowest address) and REG_DWORD_BIG_ENDIAN (least significant
byte is at the highest address).
Expandable String Value
REG_EXPAND_SZ
A variable-length data string. This data type includes variables that
are resolved when a program or service uses the data.
Multi-String Value
REG_MULTI_SZ
A multiple string. Values that contain lists or multiple values in a
form that people can read are generally this type. Entries are
separated by spaces, commas, or other marks.
String Value
REG_SZ
A fixed-length text string.
Binary Value
REG_RESOURCE_LIST
A series of nested arrays that is designed to store a resource list
that is used by a hardware device driver or one of the physical
devices it controls. This data is detected and written in the
\ResourceMap tree by the system and is displayed in Registry Editor in
hexadecimal format as a Binary Value.
Binary Value
REG_RESOURCE_REQUIREMENTS_LIST
A series of nested arrays that is designed to store a device driver's
list of possible hardware resources the driver or one of the physical
devices it controls can use. The system writes a subset of this list
in the \ResourceMap tree. This data is detected by the system and is
displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value.
Binary Value
REG_FULL_RESOURCE_DESCRIPTOR
A series of nested arrays that is designed to store a resource list
that is used by a physical hardware device. This data is detected and
written in the \HardwareDescription tree by the system and is
displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format as a Binary Value.
None
REG_NONE
Data without any particular type. This data is written to the registry
by the system or applications and is displayed in Registry Editor in
hexadecimal format as a Binary Value
Link
REG_LINK
A Unicode string naming a symbolic link.
QWORD Value
REG_QWORD
Data represented by a number that is a 64-bit integer. This data is
displayed in Registry Editor as a Binary Value and was introduced in
Windows 2000.

Video driver failed to initialize during formatting
I decided to format my computer as it was quite slow and experiencing some
problems.
Started the process and all was going fine until it asked me to restart the
computer for the next step of the setup. When it restarted, there was the
following error message:
STOP: 0x000000B4 Video driver failed to initialize.
It suggested that I restarted the computer and disables BIOS memory options
such as caching or shadowing. I dont particularly understand what this is but
went on the menu (that you get when you press DEL just after restarting) and
disabled cache L1 and L2 and also the option that referred to shadowing.
Furthermore, I then chose SAFE MODE but unfortunately after showing me the
windows logo, it just shuts off automatically. I have turned different
variations of this, not disabling them and still using Safe mode but am
completely unable to get to setup. Windows just doesnt start... any
suggestions will be welcome!

4 Gb RAM with Win XP
I know that 32-bit XP has a max of about 3.2 Gb RAM. I built a system in Aug
07 with an Asus M2N-E motherboard and 2 x 1 Gb Kingston DDR2-800 RAM. Seven
months later, the RAM had dropped in price by 65%; I couldn't find 2 x 512
Mb, so bought another 2 Gb of Kingston. Windows read 3.25 Gb, but I started
to get a lot of crashes (I had had Win problems before but bought the new RAM
just after having my PC sorted out). One message on error reporting referred
to RAM as a possible cause, but crashed while I was reading it.
Although Asus suggest filling 1,2 or 4 slots, I've just booted with 3 Gb.
OK until I start a low-demand game (Lionheart, Silent Storm 2), when it
quickly crashes. Since I built the PC Win has tended to attribute errors to
a device driver problem, but checks always show all drivers up-to-date and
problem-free. Any advice? Tag: IE7 toolbar moved to the left Tag: 803233

Can windows XP diagnose/repair bad system files (non-boot)?
I have been having a problem with not being able to install any sort of
printer (pdf driver, printer, etc). I've got another post around here
somewhere but couldn't get it figured out; basically something crapped out
and not I keep getting an error whenever I try to install. I wonder if I've
got a sys file somewhere that is bad. Anyway, when I run the recovery
console, it talks about repairing the boot, but I can get in the computer
fine. in fact, seems to be running normal, except for the print thing. I
was wondering if I can have windows compare the originals to the ones on the
computer and replace if needed. My other thoughts are it's in the registry
(no clue there) or that I have to wipe everything and start from scratch
(also new territory). Anyway, any suggestions appreciated. Thanks! Tag: IE7 toolbar moved to the left Tag: 803220
Configure USB Port for Printing
Hello,
I have a Lexmark 4270 "All-N-One" fax/printer/scanner.
My "All-N-One" device suddenly stopped working. When I tried re-installing
the sw, then try to print a test page, the sys tells me my port is not
configured properly. I look into the properties/port of the printer, and
found the printer assigned to lpt1.
How do I configure lpt1 to accept commands for the USB port/printer.
I have looked on the web, but unable to find a "good" solution.
Can/will someone point in the right direction???

2 applications sharing COM1 serial port
I see that there are a few software solutions out there, and I trialed one
and it seemed to work, but I don't have $100, and was thinking maybe what I
need to do requires less than these software solutions (ie. Fabulatech's
serial splitter).
I have an electronic scale that we use to send weight to the shipping
software (we use UPS and Endicia). It's plugged into the serial port
(Com1). There is only one such port available.
What we need is for these two different applications to be open at the same
time, and each able to get info from the scale. One application works while
the other is closed, but when both are opn only one continues to work, and
the connection to the scale is lost by the other one.
Fabulatech's Serial Splitter seemed to do the trick, but isn't there any
easy way to fiddle with interrupt request settings, or make a virtual port
and have one application use that virtual port, and direct the COm1 real
port to the virtual port, or SOMETHING?
Any help or ideas or sugestions would be appreciated. It seems like someone
must have had to do this before.

Error when using a printer

have spent considerable time troubleshooting this problem including contact

several years with no problem, till now?) I have reset Internet Explorer and

RegistryFix v.6.2, Disc Cleanup, Cleared the desktop, PC Doctor and tried
System Restore all with no success. I am using Windows XP Home v. 5.1.2600
Service Pack 2 on a Gateway 510 with Intel Pentium 2.60 GHz, 494 MB Ram and
80 GB Hard Drive.
When I copy text from Word 2002 to Outlook Express I get the message:
"One or more ActiveX controls could not be displayed because either:
(1) Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this
page or
(2) You have blocked a publisher of one of the controls.
As a result, the page may not display correctly."
When I close the error message, the copy appears correct in Outlook Express.

(The Help and Support Center offers no help, by the way.)
The net effect seems to be that I can submit a fax to one or two recipient
destinations at a time, but the rest if there are more do not show up in the
fax queue.
I have removed and re-installed the XP fax service; I have deleted and
re-created the fax printer and queue; I have re-installed the modem.
Everything was working fine on this system with no changes and then this
happened.
My guess is that something like registry corruption keeps the Send Fax
Wizard from completing properly (there is a brief flash at the end of a
small message box window -- it appears to be empty). It no longer remembers
settings (such as cover page) from invocation to invocation.

cmd.exe not running
Hello,
I am having XP (sp 2) system. Recently the system was infected by many
spywares/malwares. Now, using available tools I have get rid of these
malwares, but now cmd.exe is not running. Whenever I type 'cmd' in Run

"Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe'. Make sure you
typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file,
click the Start button, and then click Search."
I checked the path and found that cmd.exe is there, even double
clicking on cmd.exe in explorer shows the same message.
Can anyone help?

process wait time
Hi,
I have a C++ program having two threads, out of which thread 1 is cpu
bound and thread 2 is IO bound.
There are two cases for the process
case 1) where both thread needs almost same execution time (say t1)
case 2) Where thread 1 finishes very early then thread 2.
I have a 2 core machine (while doing test I closed all other exe's)
Ideally in case 2 the time to finish the process (process end time -
start time) should be almost equal to /better then case 1. But its
not, and the process runs 10% slower in csae 2.
I suspect that since there are no ready to run thread in case 2 (as
thread 1 finished early) so the OS puts the process in wait queue
whenever thread 2 requests IO, which casue the increase in total time
to finish the process.
the total cpu time as shown by TaskManager is less in case 2, But the
end to end finish time is more.
I want to know is ther any way in windows by which I can find out the
wait time of a process (all the time it spent in ready to run OR
blocked state) Tag: IE7 toolbar moved to the left Tag: 803117

Problem with Windows Explorer
Hello,
On my (normal computer) when I right click a folder in Windows
explorer I get Explore, Open, Search.
On my friends PC they get Search, Explore, Open.
So double clicking on a folder open the Search window.
How do I fix this?
And Tools - Folder Options - Restore defaults
does not fix it.

Upload problems with Windows XP SP2
I'm having trouble with uploads to web sites on my Windows XP SP2
machine. I basically can't upload any files in in a web request. If
I try going to a bandwidth test page, it does the download test fine,
but then won't even complete the upload test. I can't send emails
through my web email client. I can't upload files to web pages. Each
time I try it hangs and then times out.
It shouldn't be a browser problem. It is the same with Firefox and
IE.
I thought maybe it was a hardware problem. I tried switching out the
network cable, tried switching ports on my router, I even installed a
different network card with the same results on the new card. Clearly
it shouldn't be a hardware problem.
It isn't the internet connection. I have another computer going
through the same router to the same internet connection and it doesn't
have the problem. I can upload files over the network to the other
computer (though it does seem a little slower than download).
Firewall is turned off. I really don't know what else to look for.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm stumped.
Thanks,

After many attempts and help from you good guys.... Finally "Convert"
ran to completion and gave me a NTFS hard drive.
BUT, the ending drive (my C: drive) was not bootable.
From Acronis Trueimage I tried to Restore the MBR and Track 0 ... no

So, Restored back to FAT32.
