system restore from command line

Hi All,

I currently have a winxp pro system with a corruypted software hive in
the registry.
I Booted into a PE env and using avast registrty editor recovered the
softeware hive from a logfile.
This gave me hope. But when I boot it still halts after loading
mup.sys disabling mup .sys doesn't help.
so what i would like to do is run srtsui.exe however can't get into
safe mode and repair mode will no allow me to run rstrui.exe...

What are my options ?

Win XP creates several copies of the Registry at the time of successful
boot - as it boots and detects a "corrupt" Registry it will "check" and load
one of the copies.

Using System Restore may not be successful since the restore point may
conatin the same problem - XP may have created points based upon repair
attempts.

One option may be booting from the XP CD and doing a repair - note - not
repair via Recovery Console - at that point in setup - bypass and as setup
continues it should state it has found an XP installation and offer to clean
install or repair the current installation.

Repair is actually an upgrade installation and a product key required. Since
it is an upgrade data and applications are "supposedly" retained.

Hi ju.c,

It appears that the tool can only recover the registry from the stored
snapshots. This can be done via Recovery Console or using Bart's PE CD, both
are freeware.

System Restore is *much* more than the registry.

Would you please create a new page on your site with this info, all of it. Like apps, Recovery
Console commands and Bart's PE. (and post the link)

I make custom CD's all the but I don't know how to use Bart's PE to restore the Registry, unless you
mean just simple file copy.

Since we're on the subject, how do I use ERUNT with WinPE discs? I'm afraid to test it and I can't
find any help on the topic.

Here is a MS-KB on restoring registry hives from System Restore store
("System Volume Information") folder.

Alternately you can simply select the snapshot, restore the registry hives
and move it to the System32\Config folder, using Bart's PE CD.
