Hi, my windows xp system randomly reboots about once or twice a day.
I experiences the problem while i kept my system running over night to
encode videos, to download big files or simply with msn or skype being
open.

I have an Asus G1S Laptop with Windows XP Pro SP 3 (issue also
occurred with SP2).
There are no "strange" programs running on the computer, its a fresh
xp install plus the asus drivers.

here's what i see regularly in the Event Viewer -> System:

---
The DCOM Server Process Launcher service terminated unexpectedly. It
has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be
taken in 60000 milliseconds: Reboot the machine.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
---

thaks for any help

If your computer is restarting spontaneously, you are presumably
blue-screening, and you are set to the default of rebooting whenever
that happens. It's a poor default setting and you should change it.
Right-click My Computer, and choose Properties. On the Advanced tab,
click Settings under Startup and Recovery. Under System failure,
uncheck the box "Automatically restart.

Now when the problem occurs again, instead of restarting, you will get
the blue screen with diagnostic information. Post back with those
details for more help.

Can you post a copy of the complete report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

My reaction is that the Event Viewer report does not relate to the
reboot. I may be wrong.

well, the option was already disabled :-(
after reading your posts a second time i realize that the error
probably does not display in a blue screen because when the pc reboots
i can hear the shut down sound.

Can you please post the complete Report from Event Viewer. The one you
quoted earlier.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Otherwise this link may help:

Have you installed a Registry Cleaner or Ram Booster?

Hello there,

With problems like these I can assure you they're annoying! It could be RAM,
it could be some dodgy driver or even over-heating issues (being a laptop).

However with this particular problem it sounds more like some form of
Malware. I don't care what anti-virus you have, no offence but nothing
protects your PC 100% it's about time everyone knows the truth. Personally
I am getting sick and tired of removing viruses and spyware from customers
machines, I should make a living from it... oh I do. But I don't like it.

Try this tool: http://www.grc.com/freeware/dcom.htm which puts a plug in the
hole which Microsoft left open.
Also try this tool: vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ from McAfee.

Hope this helps,
J

Hi, no I have not installed ram booster or registry cleaner. The only
resident programs are Zone Alarm, PC Tools Spyware Doctor, and Norton
Security Scan.
Here is the complete event log:

Two points arise from your computer being an Asus.

The model you stated was Asus G1S. Research suggests the computer was
marketted with Vista installed. Did you buy it with Vista and replace it
with Windows XP? If yes it could be that one or more drivers are not
suited for XP.

The Windows XP SP3 update may also have thrown up a problem with Asus
A8N32- SLI Deluxe motherboard. What is the motherboard installed in your
Asus G1S?

I am not sure whether changing the operating system could cause problems
if you need or are able to make a warranty claim!
