Desktop search does not index all folders!!
Windows desktop search does not include all my .DOC files in the index. I've
checked:
--- it is set to index .DOC files (and does index many)
--- it is set to index all of My DOcuments, including the specific folders
with the files in. It seems to leave out whole folders.
--- I've reindexed everything.
I'm running XP. I can't find an "About Windows Search" to tell me what
version of that I'm running, but I have automatic updates so I guess both XP
and Search are bang up to date.
It is mysterious, but so far, this thing is useless!
Any ideas? Tag: mark fax as read Tag: 813499
Can't open a CD-ROM
Thursday morning
June 26, 2008
I've got a CD-ROM I can't open.
The error window states, "DISK IS NOT FORMATTED. Windows cannot read from
the disk. The disk may be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is
not compatible with Windows."
I'm using the Windows format, so I figure the disk is probably corrupted.
I've cleaned it, checked it for scratches (none), and it doesn't look like
the disk is full, so what can I do to open it?
I've got some files on the CD-ROM I need.
Thanks in advance.

windows explorer problems
So I had the Vundo trojan, I ran Vundofix and it found the files and got rid
of them, I ran it again and it didn't find anything. I've run other programs
and they're saying they're not finding anything either. So I'm thinking its
not that anymore?
When I start my computer up and log in my icons don't show up on the desk
top and the task bar comes up but the start menu button and the time don't
show up so it's just a blue bar and when I put the mouse over it, it turns
into the hourglass. And the start button on the key board won't bring up the
start menu.
About 30 seconds after I log on a window comes up saying that Windows
Explorer has encountered a problem and has to close, and some times it also
says that about Dr Watsons Postmortem Debugger, but not everytime.
I have to run everything through task manager and currently I am in safe mode. Tag: mark fax as read Tag: 813459
Internet Mysteriously Stops Working Right After Installing XP SP2!
Hello,
After installing Windows XP SP2, my internet stops working. The router and
settings and internet connectivity are all fine. It even says I'm connected!
I have other computers with SP2 and SP3 and this has never happened! It's
really weird. I have tried Firefox 2 and IE 6 to no avail. Do you think it
has anything to do with ports or Windows Firewall? I don't get blocked access
to any programs nor do I have any other problems...I've looked through like

Windows XP crash - files disappear
Hi folks,
I'm wondering if anyone has encountered the following situation and found a
reason for it happening (two seperate machines and slightly different
problems):
I did an install of Office 2003 and service packed it on a machine running
Windows XP SP2. Nothing strange to report. Rebooted the machine a few times
and all was okay. The users took the machine home and office had literally
vanished - it was not on the Start menu and there was no files located within
Program files | Microsoft Office. There was nothing listed in the event
viewer as to why this had happened and the only way I got it back was be
using a System Restore point. It was such a clean disappearance that the only
way I could see it happening was from Add/Remove programs and the user
assured me this had not been done.
A few days later another user is copying a huge file to his desktop and his
machine hangs/crashes. After a reboot, there profile has disappeared and
everything he had on his desktop has gone - files/shortcuts etc. My colleague
used a System Restore point and this resolved the problem.
However, I do not understand how this is happening as it seems very drastic
and I've never seen it before in 6 years of having XP on our desktops. It
also seems that both problems are related as they are exhibiting the same
symptoms. Has anyone else encountered this problem or know of what may cause
it.
I've scoured the knowledge base and cannot see anything that resembles this
or what may cause it to happen. I'm not so concerned for a fix more than what
parameters may cause it! All our machines are fully covered with antivirus
and this has not shown any problems.
Thanks for your help in advance. Tag: mark fax as read Tag: 813424

"Entire Directory" option not showing when adding a network printer
Hi Everyone,
I've been experiencing the following issue when I try to add a printer
to some of the workstations of my office network.
In ALL BUT TWO of the 10 computers if I go to the Find a Printer
Wizard > "Network Printer" > "Find a printer in the directory" I get
the window called "Find Printer" that shows an "Entire Directory"
option selected by default in the "In" box and below in the drop down
menu the name of our server. I leave "Entire directory" selected and
hit the "Find now" button to get the full list of all our network
printers, I select what I want and I'm all set.
Instead on two of the computers the following happens:
After clicking on "Find a printer in the directory" the "Find Printer"
window looks different. It does NOT have the "Entire Directory" option
in the "In" field but instead just the name of our server. If I hit
"browse" I get no other option but the name of our server.
I leave the name of the server selected as I have no other option and
when I select "Find now" the computer freezes for a good 5 minutes and
eventually will return a blank list (no printers).
I'm assuming that the reason why the system returns a blank list is
because it's looking for a printer attached to the server which does
not exist but do you have any idea why the "Entire directory" option
is not showing up?
The only way for us to get to a printer is to select "Local Printer"
instead of Network Printer in the Wizard and then select a TCP/IP port
and enter IP address of that specific printer. It works but the
printer is considered a local printer and not a network one.
Do you have any ideas of what is going on?
Thank you very much, any suggestion greatly appreciated!

external hard drive no access question
Hi, I had an Emachine that took a dump - it stopped booting up on startup. I
took it to geek squad and they told me that there was a problem with the
computer seeing the hard drive on start up and that's why it would not boot
up. They advised that they could extract the information off my (now dead)
emachine hard drive for $275. I left.
A friend told me that I could remove it from the emachine and connect it to
my new computer as an external hard drive, which I did. Now with my new Dell
I can see the local disk F and all the files inside it however, when trying
to access any folder, particularly the important one...Desktop, I get the
following error message: "F:\Documents and Settings\Desktop is not
accessible. Access is denied."
I have messed around with sharing and security with individual files and
with the entire root and cannot get it to let me in.
I am wondering the following things:
I have a bunch of pictures on the original hard drive desktop....is there a
way to tell if they are they still there with no access?
What might I have to do to make accessing these files in this external hard
drive possible?
I thank anyone for any help you can give me with this. Tag: mark fax as read Tag: 813367
Problem with video resolution going to 640x480
Hi folks.
Well, I have beat my head against the wall till it is bloodied. I hope
someone has slayed this dragon, and can give me a hint.
I have a Dell Dimension 4550 running XP Pro. This machine has an
Nvidia GeForce4 MX420 integrated video card on the motherboard. I
normally use this at a 1024x768 resolution setting. I have used this
machine with this configuration for several years without any problem,
until about 6 months ago.
It now switches itself to 640x480 4-bit resolution any time it comes
out of sleep mode. When this happens, it is not possible to change the
display resolution with the normal settings controls. The only way to
recover seems to be to reboot the machine. Once the machine is
rebooted, it works reliably until the next time that the system goes
into sleep mode. Then it all starts over again.
I beat on it several times, and finally decided to do a complete fresh
install of XP Pro on a brand new disk. I installed all of the drivers
fresh, and did the setup from the ground up. Painful, but I figured
that this would solve the problem. Unfortunately, the problem is still
there.
I have tried the video drivers from Dell, and I have downloaded and
installed Nvidia's drivers as well. Neither affect the problem.
I suspect that this problem is related to some security patch that MS
has done to Windows, though I don't have any real evidence of that. It
just seems like everything was working fine, and then it wasn't, kind
of like something was added to the OS that doesn't work with my
system. I suggest that it is security related because it seems to be
connected to the user log-in process. I have three accounts on this
machine. One for my wife, one for me, and one for guests. My account
and my wife's accounts are both protected with passwords. The guest
account does not have a password. If I log into the guest account
after coming out of sleep mode, the machine is at the proper video
resolution. However, if I log into either of the password protected
accounts after coming out of sleep mode, it goes to 640x480.
I don't believe that it is a hardware problem, because when it is at
the proper resolution, it works fine. And I can change back and forth
between all accounts without a problem as long as it does not go into
sleep mode.
Anyone have an idea for a fix?
Thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post.
Best regards,

How to totally delete defunct WINDOWS folder/subfolders?
I have old Windows directories on 2 separate drives; one is my current boot
drive; the other I used for a test to potentially upgrade my XP Pro to XP
Pro X64.
Both will not totally delete because of the obstinance of the undeletability
of 2 files in \[whatever old]\system32\Macromed\Flash directory. The files
are:
1. FlashUtil9f.exe
2. Flash9f.ocx
To illustrate the absurdity of my attempts to fool Flash that these 4 Flash
files are inoperable because I re-named the whole directory tree in these
defunct Windows directories, the current trees are:
1. WnDOW_\Sy\Ma\F\
2. \W\32\M\F
Flash refuses to give up its lease on those 2 properties. Does anyone have
an answer to this. I have tried to do this by even Diagnostic Startup, and
backing up and cleaning everything cleanable with Regedt32, after
un-installing all current Macromedia programs in Add or Remove Programs, and
running RegCure 10 times in a row. Something along the line did remove
FlashUtil9f.exe in the old X64 OS directory, but nothing of the other 3
files; 1 in the uninstalled X64, 2 in the defunct X86.
Anyone have any cures?
