    - Now that SP3 is installed, what can I delete? I'm running XP Home Edition, upgraded to that from an OEM copy of ME. I've heard that if I create a slipstreamed SP3 XP installation CD, I won't have such folders as: C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$ and: C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ so can they be deleted now? Also, the C:\WINDOWS\ie7 seems kind of pointless to keep around at this juncture. Can any of these be deleted? Are there any others I don't need?     - Blank screen I have a computer with WindowsXP SP2 on it and the splash screen will come up but then after that it goes to a blank screen. The only thing that will show up is the mouse cursor. I've tried safe mode, safe mode with command prompt and also VGA mode, and they all produce the same reslult, a blank screen. Like I said the Windows XP splash screen works fine so I don't believe it is a video card or monitor problem. I went to Microsofts web site and found this hotfix for the problem "WindowsXP-KB948277-X86-ENU.EXE". So I downloaded it with another PC since I can't see anything on the screen with the bad PC. They give you no instructions on Microsofts web site on how to apply the fix. So my question is how do I execute the EXE. since all I have is a blank screen? Tag: My xp keeps restarting Tag: 815352

    - IE7 not connecting Hi, I installed IE8 Beta, played around with it for few days then uninstalled it. Now it seems something in the TCPIP level seems broken. I can ping and tracert out to any site, but IE7 will not work (nor will Firefox). I've tried: netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt , unchecking TCPIP at the network config window, uninstalled IE7, same problem with IE6 - reinstalled IE7 still not - I'm getting the page can not display error. any thought, leads? thanks for your help -- ---------------------------------- The impossible often has a kind of integrity to it which the merely improbable lacks.     - code 10 & nvidia video card I'm running XP Pro. In Device Manager, I'm getting a yellow exclamation point next to the display adapter. It's accompanied by a plain "code 10" error message and an error message stating that the device is not using resources because it has a problem.     - xp home always rebooting I have an e-machine that is always rebooting to the boot option screen, the one you get when you press F8. It time out and then reboots again and again. I would like to do a repair to not lose data, but this computer came with a restore CD. I tried to load it on to another Hard Drive, but ghost could not find the restore file on it, which would be correct. I do have a copy of XP Pro, but I don't know if this will repair my XP Home.     - Windows XP would not start This morning, I turned on my computer, the eMachine logo appeared and stays... Nothing will move it. I hit the F8 in an attempt to switch to a Safe mode or something. No luck. Turned computer off (pushing the button for 10 sec), then turned it on. Again, the same logo appeared and Windows would not load. Last night, everything appeared normal when I turned computer off. What happened? How can I fix this problem and restart my computer.     - XP Pro. SP2's explorer.exe crashing a lot and randomly. Ever since 7/9/2008 according Windows' event logs, I noticed my explorer.exe would crash randomly and I can't figure out what is causing it and why. I tried removing, disabling, downgrading, etc. programs/updates (e.g., SpyBot v1.6.0, KB951748 (DNS), Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2008 (KB890830) [don't think it removed anything], uninstalling Sun Java(TM) 6 Update 6 to install update #7, K-Lite Codec Full Pack v4.00, and TrueCrypt v6.0 portable. These were the products that I recall installing since then. I might have more and need to dig and think more. I already ran full scans with the latest definitions from Norton AntiVirus, SpyBot, SuperAntiSpyware, Ad-Aware SE Perosonal, and a-squared Free. I am not a programmer/developer so I am hoping my memory dumps and logs would help. I did notice it can take hours for the crashes to occur. When the firs tone strike, then explorer.exe will crash randomly like crazy. Even Start Menu will start going nuts. I have to reboot to keep it stable for a few hours. I doubt it is temperature related because my other software and hardware don't crash.     - WinXP very slow to start, and very very slow starting up programs I just installed WinXP on a P4 computer (1MB RAM) that runs Win2000 with no problems. WinXP was running normally until I installed some drivers from the motherboard (ASUS P4PE) CD. After rebooting I discovered that 1) the boot up takes 3+ minutes, and when WinXP finally starts up anytime I click on a program to start it, not only does it take about 3 minutes to start a simple program, but during that time I loose the use of the mouse. That is, the mouse cursor will show on a spot and if I move it, after 15-30 seconds the cursor will pop up in another location, and so on. I've looked at the task manager and when this slowdown is occuring (and it takes minutes to get the task manager to open up) there is no sign of anything hogging the cpu power...the system idle process is usually at 95-98% and whatever process I've tried to start is only using 2-5%, even though it will take 3 minutes to start up it's program. Given what I've noted, where would I look to find out what is causing this slowdown? I've turned off some services, such as Messenger, and some other non essential ones, and I've looked at msconfig but I don't see anything unusual there (although I'm not as familiar with XP processes as I am with Win2000 ones). But there's nothing hogging the processor, so how else could this slowdown be occuring. Any suggestions would be very helpful. John Tag: My xp keeps restarting Tag: 815310

    - Issues I've just recently performed a system recovery, using a recovery disk that came with this computer, reverting from XP Pro back to XP Media Edition 2005. Now everytime I try to encrypt a file on my system I get an "access denied" error, even though I'm on the main user account. I've been to Microsoft's help center and they mention this, but didn't provide a solution. Also, I currently have no Standby or Hibernate option when I go to shut it down. Curious to know what would be causing these issues, whether I have something disabled which inturn is keeping them from functioning properly, or if I have to d/l a component thats required for them to work.     - AntiVirXP08 My machine is infected with AntiVirXP08. McAfee Antivirus was unable to remove it. I've read that this virus can make it impossible to install other virus removal tools. It appears that the virus also deleted all my system restore points. However, I have some system state backups made using the MS Backup Utility on an external hard drive. The MS Win XP guidebook describes it as making "copies of your registry hives". What are registry hives? Would it be reasonable to try to restore a recent system state backup using the backup utility under these circumstances? What other parts of the system might need to be restored separately? (MSCONFIG/Startup, etc.). How is the system state backup different from creating a restore point? I appreciate all guidance and references to explanatory material.     - KB951748 - ZA fix didn't work As suggested, I downloaded and installed the revised version of Zone Alarm and allowed MS to reinstall this KB. Result: Internet access blocked again! I have now stopped all automatic updates and will screen for this diabolical program and delete it if it shows up again. MS created this problem. MS should fix it. Jim.     - total nightmare and need help Hi everyone, After my unlce told me he thought he had a virus I told him to bring the computer over, He has Windows XP on a Dell Computer and he had no password setup for his account, There are other accounts and all are administor priveleged account but I think only one had a password. I found it had that Vista Antivirus fake stupid program and I followed the manual removal instructions at http://www.enigmasoftware.com/support/vistaantivirus2008-removal/ and it went away fine but then after a couple reboots and never giving it a password, it is not showing me the Windows is Not Activated Window at the bottom of the login screen and all accounts are asking for a password. I have tried rebooting to safe mode and logging on using the administrator account but that is also asking for a password that was never set by anyone. :( Is there anything besides a re-install that will help me get back in to actually set a password now?     - Desk top folder question There are a couple of desk top folders Windows XP created and they are now in the Unused desk top folder. Internet Explorer.{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D} Microsoft Outlook.{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} These folders appear as a file folder icon. The Outlook folder seems to do nothing. I have MS Outlook installed but I do not use it. I use OE. The folder is empty and doesn't launch anything. There used to be an Outlook icon, but Windows mysteriously deleted it during a recent unsolicited desk top clean up. There is still a shortcut to Outlook via the start button. The IE folder appears empty, but it launches IE. I have a separate icon elsewhere to launch IE, although I use Firefox as a web browser. Question: why were these created and can I delete them without corrupting anything. I know icons are usually just pointers that can be deleted.     - Xp start menu lag I am running XP Pro SP2 on Intel C2D8400,Msi P35 mobo,2Gb ddr2,NVidia 9600GT and Seagate 500Gb Hdd. Often, but not always, when I try to open up the [All Programs] list in the start menu, it can take up to 10 to 20 sec before it will fill in the list of programs. Everything else seems to run just fine. I've already check the obvious (adware, etc). Adding more RAM did nothing to speed this up. It started only recently when I added 500 or more icons in my start menu with the installation of a lot of yahoo mini games for my kids. It goes back to normal if I deleted all the shortcut in the start menu. but how am my kids going to play the games just without the shortcut. It will turn worse once I exit the game and try to access the start menu again, it will pause or hang for 60 or more sec before I can see or access the icons in the start menu again. I all ways have to change to the â??Detailsâ?? view each time I use the â??openâ?? selection. A real time waster when you open many files.     - Need to Deactivate my XP Pro I am going to sell my pc to a friend with loads of software i have on it. I want to deactivate my xp & he has his own registered product key (5 PC License). I dont want to reformat pc & cant seem to slipstream SP3 onto it as the CD doesn't have SP1 on it. I dont have the cd's to allot of the installed sofware.     - With XP SP3, how do I repair my XP installation? I'm having BSODs that last time they occurred, I was able to repair by following these directions: 1. Start your computer with the Windows startup disks, or with the Windows CD-ROM if your computer can start from the CD-ROM drive. 2. When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press R to select the repair option. 3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the Windows installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console. 4. Type the administrator password when you are prompted to do so. (NOTE: If no administrator password exists, press ENTER.) 5. At the command prompt, on the drive where Windows is installed, type chkdsk /r, and then press ENTER. 6. At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER to restart your computer. However, now I have installed SP3 from a CD made from an ISO I got from the MS site. So.... to follow the instructions above, do I still use my XP upgrade CD or should I use the SP3 CD?     - Redistribution of Hotfix KB943198 Hi, I'm not sure if this is the proper place to ask this question, as it's not technical, but legal. But I've not found information about this elsewhere, so here goes........ I am involved in the development of a product that uses 'usbser.sys' and a large proportion of the target audience will be running XP. For users ruunning Windows XP SP2 a minimum of Hotfix KB943198 is required. This Hotfix is a free download, however once you follow the download link you then see that all users must pass WGA tests before being allowed to download this free update. My preference is to bundle the Hotfix into my program's installer and install it automatically (I've already constructed the Bootstrapper Package to achieve this). This is the easiest solution for the end user, but I suspect it will violate some legal requirement of MS......... So my question is: how can I distribute Hotfix KB943198 as part of my Install in a way that doesn't break any MS legal requirements? The "Description of the standard terminology that is used to describe Microsoft software updates" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824684/) suggests that it is possible to petition Microsoft - the section entitled 'Hotfix' reads as follows: "...........Additional Information: Hotfixes are distributed by Microsoft Product Support Services. Customers may not redistribute hotfixes without written, legal consent from Microsoft." So who would I need to contact to petition for legal consent? Would it be an appropriate program manager?     - Misplaced folders I hope someone can help me with this problem. I was working on a xp machine (with two profiles) in one profile (both admin rights) I was running spybot. I then attemted to log off and and log on as other profile. well it shot me to a brand new profile as if it was the first time ever used. Since i was having issues with the 2nd profile anyways i assumed that it just reset itself and set up the profile. During this time i cut a folder from the other profile over to the desktop of this new profile that was created. I rebooted the machine. the 'new' profile was gone and the orig 2nd profile was back. but now i cannot find that folder, there are docs that i need. I tried using search to no avail. any ideas?     - Windows xp home keeps restarting. I have a Compaq Presario s5000nx. it keeps rebooting, I could be reading e-mail or just looking things up and it will restart. I replaced the heatsink, but the fan that came with it is 5000 rpm's but the speed fan says it is only 2800. Speed fan temps are fan 1 46c fan2 80c, hd 39c.     - Phantom Drive on PC Hope I'm posting this in the right place. I bought an out-of-lease IBM NetVista PC with a 2.6 GHz processor, 512 GB of RAM, a 40 GB hard drive and a 16x CD drive. The hard drive is configured as drive C. D is the CD drive. Everything seemed standard at this point, but then I looked at Windows Explorer and it revaled a DVD player configured as the E drive. I tried putting a DVD in the C drive just to see if it could be read. No dice. I'm wondering if the original owner (only God knows who!) might have had a DVD in the box and removed it. Problem is, the PC came with a fresh install of XP (albeit an old one with nothing but SP1 and some IBM utilities). Can I just delete the phantom drive from Administrative Tools without introducing instabilities or causing any problems? I appreciate any and all opinions and guesses. Last week after an MS Update my display went into a "modified theme" and the plus themes as well as the XP theme were no longer available in "Display Properties". A system restore corrected this.     - How many non-tech people don't let their computers get updated? I was in my dentist's office today and noticed that his computer, which he uses for looking at my dental and some other medical information, has a "bubble" saying that (Windows XP automatic) updates had been downloaded and were ready to install. I know that that message means if he isn't careful, the next time he shuts down his system the updates will be installed. I asked him what he was going to do, and he didn't have an action plan. This has many problems: 1. what if he wants to go home and not wait around for an unknown amount of time while things get installed and he is sure his computer works again when he comes back. 2. What if the updates break things? He would then be essentially dead in the water since he can't even look at his (dental) X-rays without using his computer and the computer that processes the X-rays. 3. Why is the computer with medical records connected to the web in the first place, since it has medical records? His office has at least 4 computers networked together for accounting, 2 or more dental chairs, and each of 3 or more dental X-ray machines. I therefore expected that he was running some "dental office" package with support, and I expected him to say "looks like it's time to call in the software tech guy to do the updates. At the very least I expected him to say that he would have his office manager or other designated staff member handle things. updates.     - ZoneAlarm issues Today I contacted TimeWarner Road Runner (my isp) because I wasnâ??t getting into my email or onto the internet. The rep said that in the last couple of days, XP-based computers that use the ZoneAlarm firewall have been unable to connect to the internet, ever since the latest Microsoft automatic update was installed. To test this, I disabled ZA, and immediately got connected. In what way is Microsoft messing with ZA?     - Once in a while, winlogon.exe will hog CPU and makes my Windows unresponsive. Hello. I have a strange rare and annoying Windows XP Pro. SP2 (IE6.0 SP2; all critical updates and optional softwares for SP2) issue that had been around for three years or so, and I can't figure out what's going on. Once in a while (very rare -- maybe once every one/two months?), I winlogon.exe decides to go nuts and take one of my CPU (have a dual core Intel P4 Prescott machine). From there, softwares don't respond and some can't be shut down (e.g., SeaMonkey.exe, Trillian.exe, Outlook.exe) even if I force end task. When I try to shut down Windows to reboot, it gets stuck forever and I need to do a force shut down on the power switch on the Dell Optiplex GX280 case. I tried viewing Process Explorer, Process Monitor, event logs, services via cmd.exe (administrative method freezes/doesn't respond), etc. and found nothing interesting.     - KB951748 for XP - July 2008 update Avoid installing this update. If you've installed this it can be removed by going to Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. You will likely have to remove other July updates first. In my case I had to remove KB951978 (XP) and KB953463 (Outlook 2007 Junk Email filter).     - Extrange behaviour I don't know if anyone has come accross this behavior. My computer automaticaly opens the ""my dosuments" folder every time I start it. I believe it to be a virus so I've tried 3 different Antivirus programs 3 different results. Solo Antivirus doesn't report any thing. AVG free reports a serious infection with "I-Worm/Brontok.EE" but will not clean it. I have observed brontok behavior in the PC like creating .EXE of directories. Norton 2008 said that it found it in one temp file and cleaned it. I have tried looking for the infection manually but can. even thouth the folder options have not been eliminated as the brontok virus would do, I can't change the options to show the hidden files and folders. I downloaded som instructions from virusbuster to boot the pc with into recovery console. but it wont let me acces the needed directories.     - Trouble installing Acrobat Reader 8.1 I have tried several times to download and install the latest version of AR. I have tried in normal and in safe mode and it always gets to about 92%, stops and then goes away after a few minutes. I get no error message of any type until I try to open AR at which time I get an error message that it has encountered a problem and must close. about a virus and needed to update virus scan but then before i can do
anything like in matter of 5 to 15 seconds it restarts and it wont let me do
anything? please someone help me i think there might be a virus or something
on my other computer?

a) boot into safemode
then b) configure your
system to boot clean.
