Error 1402 when trying to uninstall a program
Running XP Home SP3. I downloaded a trial version of Migo Software PC Backup
Pro. Had problems running the program, and wanted to uninstall. Uninstalling
in Contol Panel/A/R Programs yeilds an "Error 1402. Could not open key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\.nbk\Shell New. Verify you have
sufficient access." Searched MS KB articles and found kb236592. Went into
Registry, found key, right clicked, selected permissions, changed to give me
full control, checked "Replac e permission entries on all child objects..."
Tried to uninstall again, got same error message.
I am unable to send a support inquiry to Migo Tech Support since I didn't
buy, and don't have a serial number. Located their phone numbers. One doesn't
connect, the other doesn't answer.
I recall thet Microsoft had a uninstall utility that I used to get rid of
some Symantec "leftovers". Is it still available would it work? Please help.

Trouble with Microsoft Word
When I finish composing a document and go to "Save As" in the FILE
pull down menu I get a small window titled MICROSOFT VISUAL BASIC. In
the window it says, "compile error in hidden module:Main". There are 2
buttons, 1 says ON and the other says HELP.If I click on OK, the
window goes away, (no SAVE AS action)
If I click on HELP a new window appears titled "Microsoft Office XP
Professional with Front Page". In the box it says, "Please wait while
windows configures Microsoft XP Professional with Front Page"
Then it wants me to insert "microsoft Office XP Professional with
Front Page"disk and click OK.
I do not have Windows XP Professional, I have Windows XP Home Edition.
This whole thing started when I loaded the language recognition
software, IBM's ViaVoice. In an attempt to fix the problem I went to
the Control Panel and removed theViaVoice software but that did not
fix the problem.
I assume the ViaVoice had a file conflict somewhere with my MS Word.
Any help would be appreciated.

New XP Pro in dual-boot is mute
Hi Folks,
The computer (Medion Multimedia PC MD8833) has Vista Home Premium
pre-installed. I have installed a newly-bought XP Pro in a separate
partition as a dual boot setup. All in XP is now working after several
trials and tribulations EXCEPT the sound. Realtek High Definition Audio is
on the motherboard. Attempts to install drivers for it, from various sources
including the CD supplied with the computer as 'XP Drivers', a file
recommended by DriverDetective and one from Realtek site, fail towards the
end of the installation process with a cryptic 'failed' message. One error
code announced is 0xE0000227 Does anyone know what this means and what has
generated it?
I wonder if anyone else has encountered this sort of problem with sound in a
dual boot? The Vista installation partition is Hidden and Vista has not been
booted at all when I try these installations. The Installshield runs for
quite a long time, extracting many files and it is almost at the end of a
progress bar when it fails. This seems to imply that it thinks it is
installing to the correct hardware??
It may be relevant that, if I go into Device Manager (where a yellow ! is
shown against this item) and ask Windows to reinstall the driver, nothing at
all happens when that button is clicked. Also 'uninstall' does not work -
something says 'device may be needed to boot up' which is surely
ridiculous!?
Any ideas on how I proceed to get sound working?
TIA

explorer.exe proccess keeps stoping
Greetings,
I am working on a Dell dimension 4600 that was riddeld with spyware. I've
done several scans and install AV protection. However, at startup the
explorer.exe process keeps crashing caussing the desktop to flash about every
5-10 seconds.
This happens in safe mode also. I can get to a command prompt and launch
task from there.
I've done:
1) Scanned with counterspy and spy-bot S&D
2) Scanned with McAfee 2008
3) sfc /scannow
4) installed SP3
5) Reinstalled video driver
6) Uninstalled any unnecessary programs
Any ideas out there?

Netmeeting causes remote keyboard to fail
I was conducting a Netmeeting session with a remote Windows XP laptop user
last Friday. After our session was over their keyboard would only type
gibberish. Rebooting did not help. I set up another Netmeeting this morning

away. I had the user power cycle the laptop and the problem returned. Once
again we set up the Netmeeting and the problem was resolved.
Does anyone know what causes this and how it can be resolved?

Updates will not install
I picked up my computer from the shop a few days ago after a re-build of the
OS system (XP Home). While in the shop I let them install Norton AntiVirus
2008 and Webroot SpySweeper, but nothing else.
Now that I am at home, I keep getting the message that updates are ready for
my computer. I instruct it to download and install (Express Install) the
updates.
A few seconds later, I get the message that:
Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2
(KB936181)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2008 (KB890830)
Update for Windows XP (KB951978)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB950759)
CANNOT BE INSTALLED.
I thought that either NAV or Spy Sweeper might be blocking it. I turned off
SpySweeper (but can't figure out HOW to turn off NAV) and tried again
(actually tried six times) with the same results.
Don't I need these updates? And if so, what are some suggestion for
resolving the problem?

Where do I stick my license key?
It's a VERY long story...
I have a dell Dimension 2300 with xp home that's gone corrupt.
I don't have the Administrator
password, so I've limited access to clean things up.
I decided to just reload it.
It won't install from the i386 partition on the hard drive.
Complains that it needs drivers.cab and mstask.ini.
When I borrow those from another similar Dell machine, it gets a lot further
but has problems: sxs.dll finds syntax errors in default.man...
Ok, I give up.
I cloned the drive from a Dimension 4550 and after a lot of
messing around with drivers, it appears to work and msoobe
claims it's activated.
Now, I have two machines with the same license key.
I have two keys for the 2300. One from the sticker on the case
and a different one extracted from the registry. I "understand"
that's normal for an OEM preinstall??? I also saved the wpa.dbl
file from the original disk.
So, to make it all legal, which key do I use and how do I get it
into the right place...without screwing up the activation?
What's the risk of doing nothing? Am I likely to encounter downloading
or activation-related problems later? Tag: I am having a few problems with Windows XP Tag: 815421

Don't get Login Screen
Hello,
I know that I may have to chase this up with the Nortons Ghost help, but
I wanted to know what it may have done to cause the following.
I have XP2 with what I believe is all the latest updates. I have not put
SP3 on unless it just did that automatically.
I have had a few crashes and lost too much stuff in the past and wanted
to clone my primary C drive so if it happens again I don't have to spend
days getting things up to speed again.
I used Ghost to clone the C (with XP) partition to a good drive of the
same make, size etc.. I have done this umpteem times so know what I am
doing.
It did it's job well and when I rebooted I was able to continue my work.
When I had time, I wanted to check the clone drive so swapped it.
It booted up fine but when I was expecting to get the Login screen, I
got another same colour and style screen, but with a smaller XP Windows
logo etc. I was unable to interact with it as there was nothing to
interact with although the mouse was moving fine.
Any ideas on this?
Thanks

I have recently encountered a problem with my Dell laptop running XP. The

Blotchy XP Open Screen, Dots Around Cursor & Sys Tray Icons
I just installed XP Home SP3, but that may be just a coincidence. Since then,
the XP Open Screen has blue dashes or sometimes blue squares or rectangles
scattered throughout the black background. Cursor arrow lower half is dots or
other times has a rectangle of black dots horizontally on either side of its
lower half. In systems tray, PC-cillin icon bottom half has dots in it, the
Quicktime icon has a rectangle of dots through the bottom half and the
Creative Diagnostics Agent icon is just a rectangle of dots.
Otherwise, all screens are clear and no operating problems with Word, IE or
anything else.
I tried a system restore, so then I had to reload SP3. I did a Safe Mode
start and the cursor looked fine. I did a scandisk and disk cleanup. Still
the same problems. I didn't want to get into msconfig.exe for fears of
screwing something up, so I thought I'd ask for help.
Is it something I can fix without reloading Windows (I hope)?

MMC and other system utilities not starting without any error mess
I have a fully patched XP Pro SP3 laptop where no MMC snap-in (or mmc.exe
itself) is starting and also things like ntbackup.exe and msinfo32.exe are
not starting.
They give _no error messages_, nothing just happens when clicking things
under for example Control Panel/Administrative Tools (actually the Finnish
equivalents, this is a Finnish language Windows) or trying to start things
from the console.
There are probably others in addition to mmc, ntbackup and msinfo32 that are
not launching, but basically this problem seems to be limited to Windows
components and not applications.
Some things that do work are IE7 and Windows Explorer. Things ruled out thus
far are simple drive errors and installed AV.
I wish I knew what happened to the machine just before it started acting up
like this, but reports from the user indicate that the latest patches are
probably the only things installed on it recently. Can't look at any logs
since Event Viewer is part of the problem. Tag: I am having a few problems with Windows XP Tag: 815364

Now that SP3 is installed, what can I delete?
I'm running XP Home Edition, upgraded to that from an OEM copy of ME.
I've heard that if I create a slipstreamed SP3 XP installation CD, I
won't have such folders as:
C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$
and:
C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$
so can they be deleted now?
Also, the C:\WINDOWS\ie7 seems kind of pointless to keep around at this
juncture.
Can any of these be deleted? Are there any others I don't need? They
take up a lot of space AND they slow down defrags and AV scans.

XP Pro. SP2's explorer.exe crashing a lot and randomly.
Ever since 7/9/2008 according Windows' event logs, I noticed my
explorer.exe would crash randomly and I can't figure out what is causing
it and why. I tried removing, disabling, downgrading, etc.
programs/updates (e.g., SpyBot v1.6.0, KB951748 (DNS), Windows Malicious
Software Removal Tool - July 2008 (KB890830) [don't think it removed
anything], uninstalling Sun Java(TM) 6 Update 6 to install update #7,
K-Lite Codec Full Pack v4.00, and TrueCrypt v6.0 portable. These were
the products that I recall installing since then. I might have more and
need to dig and think more.
I already ran full scans with the latest definitions from Norton
AntiVirus, SpyBot, SuperAntiSpyware, Ad-Aware SE Perosonal, and
a-squared Free.
I am not a programmer/developer so I am hoping my memory dumps and logs
would help. I did notice it can take hours for the crashes to occur.
When the firs tone strike, then explorer.exe will crash randomly like
crazy. Even Start Menu will start going nuts. I have to reboot to keep
it stable for a few hours. I doubt it is temperature related because my
other software and hardware don't crash.

Any ideas? Thank you in advance. :)

Allah's Apostle said, "Once while a prophet amongst the prophets was
taking a rest underneath a tree, an ant bit him. He, therefore, ordered
that his luggage be taken away from underneath that tree and then
ordered that the dwelling place of the ants should be set on fire. Allah
sent him a revelation: 'Wouldn't it have been sufficient to burn a
single ant (that bit you)?'" --Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Book 54,

WinXP very slow to start, and very very slow starting up programs
I just installed WinXP on a P4 computer (1MB RAM) that runs Win2000 with no problems. WinXP was running normally until
I installed some drivers from the motherboard (ASUS P4PE) CD. After rebooting I discovered that 1) the boot up takes
3+ minutes, and when WinXP finally starts up anytime I click on a program to start it, not only does it take about 3
minutes to start a simple program, but during that time I loose the use of the mouse. That is, the mouse cursor will
show on a spot and if I move it, after 15-30 seconds the cursor will pop up in another location, and so on.
I've looked at the task manager and when this slowdown is occuring (and it takes minutes to get the task manager to open
up) there is no sign of anything hogging the cpu power...the system idle process is usually at 95-98% and whatever
process I've tried to start is only using 2-5%, even though it will take 3 minutes to start up it's program.
Given what I've noted, where would I look to find out what is causing this slowdown? I've turned off some services,
such as Messenger, and some other non essential ones, and I've looked at msconfig but I don't see anything unusual there
(although I'm not as familiar with XP processes as I am with Win2000 ones).
But there's nothing hogging the processor, so how else could this slowdown be occuring. Any suggestions would be very
helpful.

Issues
I've just recently performed a system recovery, using a recovery disk that
came with this computer, reverting from XP Pro back to XP Media Edition
2005. Now everytime I try to encrypt a file on my system I get an "access
denied" error, even though I'm on the main user account. I've been to
Microsoft's help center and they mention this, but didn't provide a solution.
Also, I currently have no Standby or Hibernate option when I go to shut it
down. Curious to know what would be causing these issues, whether I have
something disabled which inturn is keeping them from functioning properly, or
if I have to d/l a component thats required for them to work. Any help would
be apppreciated, thanks. Tag: I am having a few problems with Windows XP Tag: 815306

AntiVirXP08
My machine is infected with AntiVirXP08. McAfee Antivirus was unable to
remove it. I've read that this virus can make it impossible to install other
virus removal tools.
It appears that the virus also deleted all my system restore points.
However, I have some system state backups made using the MS Backup Utility
on an external hard drive. The MS Win XP guidebook describes it as making
"copies of your registry hives".
What are registry hives? Would it be reasonable to try to restore a recent
system state backup using the backup utility under these circumstances? What
other parts of the system might need to be restored separately?
(MSCONFIG/Startup, etc.). How is the system state backup different from
creating a restore point?
I appreciate all guidance and references to explanatory material.

KB951748 - ZA fix didn't work
As suggested, I downloaded and installed the revised version of Zone
Alarm and allowed MS to reinstall this KB. Result: Internet access
blocked again!
I have now stopped all automatic updates and will screen for this
diabolical program and delete it if it shows up again.
MS created this problem. MS should fix it.

Microsoft Fax Running at Startup
Something called Microsoft Fax appears to be running at startup and
continues searching for something. I don't have a phone line hooked up for
fax and so I don't want this running as it seems to periodically interfer
with startup. I can't seem to find any program called Microsoft Fax though
to shut it down or disable it.

total nightmare and need help
Hi everyone,
After my unlce told me he thought he had a virus
I told him to bring the computer over,
He has Windows XP on a Dell Computer
and he had no password setup for his account,
There are other accounts and all are administor
priveleged account but I think only one had a password.
I found it had that Vista Antivirus fake stupid program
and I followed the manual removal instructions at
http://www.enigmasoftware.com/support/vistaantivirus2008-removal/
and it went away fine but then after a couple reboots
and never giving it a password, it is not showing me the Windows
is Not Activated Window at the bottom of the login screen
and all accounts are asking for a password.
I have tried rebooting to safe mode and logging on using
the administrator account but that is also asking for
a password that was never set by anyone.
:(
Is there anything besides a re-install that will help me get back
in to actually set a password now?
I hope?

Desk top folder question
There are a couple of desk top folders Windows XP created and they are now
in the Unused desk top folder.
Internet Explorer.{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}
Microsoft Outlook.{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
These folders appear as a file folder icon.
The Outlook folder seems to do nothing. I have MS Outlook installed but I
do not use it. I use OE. The folder is empty and doesn't launch anything.
There used to be an Outlook icon, but Windows mysteriously deleted it during
a recent unsolicited desk top clean up. There is still a shortcut to
Outlook via the start button.
The IE folder appears empty, but it launches IE. I have a separate icon
elsewhere to launch IE, although I use Firefox as a web browser.
Question: why were these created and can I delete them without corrupting
anything. I know icons are usually just pointers that can be deleted. But
Windows created these two folders, so I want to know for sure if I can get
rid of them for should I just leave them ignored. I am running Windows XP
SP3. Tag: I am having a few problems with Windows XP Tag: 815284
Xp start menu lag
I am running XP Pro SP2 on Intel C2D8400,Msi P35 mobo,2Gb ddr2,NVidia 9600GT
and Seagate 500Gb Hdd. Often, but not always, when I try to open up the
[All Programs] list in the start menu, it can take up to 10 to 20 sec before
it
will fill in the list of programs. Everything else seems to run just fine.
I've already check the obvious (adware, etc). Adding more RAM did nothing
to speed this up. It started only recently when I added 500 or more icons in
my start menu with the installation of a lot of yahoo mini games for my kids.
It goes back to normal if I deleted all the shortcut in the start menu. but
how am my kids going to play the games just without the shortcut. It will
turn worse once I exit the game and try to access the start menu again, it
will pause or hang for 60 or more sec before I can see or access the icons in
the start menu again. Need help please. Tag: I am having a few problems with Windows XP Tag: 815280

"Open", "Save" or "Save As" dialog box default settings
I use WIN XP Pro and have a question about an annoyance in the â??open â??,
â??Saveâ??, or â??Save Asâ?? dialog box that appears with just all programs and
Internet explorer.
It seems the â??open â??, â??Saveâ??, or â??Save Asâ?? dialog box defaults to the â??Listâ??
view to show files. I all ways have to change to the â??Detailsâ?? view each
time I use the â??openâ?? selection. A real time waster when you open many files.
Is there any way to set the default value to open to the â??Detailsâ?? view? I
have searched and been unable to find any settings. I may not be asking the
right question, Tweak UI or Power Toys did not seem to mention. I am sure
there is probably a registry settings.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Why don't you try using System Restore (back to a point that predates this
problem)?
