Why is my browser doing this?
This may be a Firefox problem, as it started soon after I upgraded to the
new version, but maybe someone knows the answer anyway...
Every once in a while, while I am browsing, Firefox will try to open the web
page as a file (and ask me where to save it.) It will continue to do this
for every link I try to open, bookmark I click, and so on. I found that I
can reset it to normal by pressing ALT. But does anyone know why it starts
doing this in the first place? Tag: Try following SRX1070925870ID Tag: 813620
Outlook New Mail Notification
I am running Window XP Pro SP 3 and Outlook 2003.
I want to change my email notification sound so I did so in Windows
and can play it back just fine (in Control Panel) after I change it.
When I get a new email, I hear nothing.
I tried to rename my desire WAV file to the default Windows XP
Notify.wav and it still plays, but I hear nothing when I get a new
email in Outlook.
I tied to create a new scheme and it still does not work when a new
email comes in.
If I put the original Windows XP Notify.wav back, it plays manually
but not when I new email comes in.
I know this worked when I was running Windows 2000, but that was a
long time ago and I just changed it in XP for the heck of it. I don't
use my speakers that much, so it has probably been like this for a
long time and I just noticed it when I wanted to change this
particular sound.
The other Windows sounds seem to work okay except this one.
Any ideers out there? Tag: Try following SRX1070925870ID Tag: 813618
Win XP Password expires in 14 days ?
Hi there,
I am the ONLY user of my computer at home and when I initially set it
up (about 2 yrs ago) I did not use any password (left blank) so that
it will automatically boot straight into Windows !
Now I notice that sometimes, before it goes into the Windows Logo
(where it loads) I get a notice saying "Your password expires in 14
days, Do you want to change it ?"
There are 2 radio buttons "Yes" and "No"
So I click on the "Yes", leave the Old/New/Confirm boxes blank, click
on OK ... it then confirms password has been saved and then continues
to boot up !
I don't know how often this happens as I normally switch on the
computer then come back 5-10 minutes when it is fully booted, so
normally never see what happens during the boot up !
I don't know why it does this routine though, and I am worried one day
I will be denied access because the 14 days have expired and it won't
let me in !
How can I get rid of this "Password Change" routine altogether ...
once again I stress, I do not need any password protection at all !
Hope someone can help !
Thanks in advance,

Cannot load OS
We had Diskkeeper's trial copy on our PC and it has expired on Wednesday, so
I uninstalled it and turned off the computer. When my husband came home the
same day, he turned on the PC and as far as he remembers he saw something
like McAfee quarantined something and then the screen displayed only "Windows
XP" instead of showing user names. One thing that happened after installing
Diskkeeper was seeing "stera not found - Skipping AUTOCHECK" before the
Usernames appeared. Now, even when we try to start the PC in the Safe Mode,
we cannot. It says Safe Mode and after seeing the hour-glass, we end up on
the page where it just says Windows XP and it just sits there.
I also tried the Recovery option and ran CHKDSK. Supposedly there were some
problems and they were fixed. I almost ran FIXMBR but didn't do it, as there
are some pictures that I haven't burned yet as well as our last tax return!
One thing that is always there is: stera not found. I wonder if this
corrupted something.
Any ideas? Tag: Try following SRX1070925870ID Tag: 813600

XP Service Pack 2 Installation problems
I'll try to be brief. Recently had XP Home with Service Pack 2. Had some
problems with USB in course of solving it (with help) removed SP 2 and
reinstalled XP Home.
USB fine. When try to install SP 2, it copies files OK then hangs whenever
it checks for 'neccessary disk space'. In Task Manager, when this is
happening the processor is wiorking at 100% constantly.
In case it is relevant, Windows Explorer does not show status bar any more
by default - I have to show it every time I start up, sometimes when using
Windows Explorer, a 'preparing to install' box shows up briefly and then
disappears with no apparent effect.
Anyone got any ideas please ?

Windows XP uodate
I have a brand new machine with XP home installed by the dealer. It is
legit, I have the CD and a sticker. I go to Wnidows update and it tells me
that I have a security update to install. When I try to install it it says
that it needs Windows Genuine Advantage (or something like that), so I click
on "install it". The message says it failed to install. I have tried
several manual methods to install it and get all sorts of wierd messages
(like you are trying to install a program that is older than the one that is
running). I am effectively blocked out of updating this copy of Windows.
Why? How do I fix this? Tag: Try following SRX1070925870ID Tag: 813579

Okay.
so. My friend's laptop crashed, took down some files, so that i

Funnier.
On the command prompt, if I type 'dir', it tells me there is nothin

I can still type

windows search 4.0
Had no clue as to where to post this. My apologies in advance if I have made
a mistake.
XP Home, SP2
Installed desktop search 3.? and hated it. Could not install it. It did not
appear in Add/Remove. Installed windows search 4.0. It did appear in
Add/Remove, and I uninstalled it. That seemed to get rid of 3.? but:
When I click Start, Search, I get a search window, but it does not look like
XP's normal/native/original search window OR 3.?'s window. Vastly different
. I am unable to determine exactly what search facility I now have.
Additionally, I have a folder c:\program files\Windows Desktop Search
containing 5 .dll files ... dbres(2).dll, deskbar(2).dll, MSNLExtRes(2).dll,
MSNLNamespaceMgr(2).dll, and wordwheel(2).dll. There is one subfolder ...
en-US with 2 .cfg files.
I think this folder is a "leftover" from a Restore Point I made, and can be
deleted, but I am not sure. Any comments or explanation is very appreciated.
What is REALLY weird is this search window does not find any folder or file
mentioned above. Searching for (2) doesn't find those mentioned at all.

How to avoid annoying desktop re-shuffle?
Hi,
Occasionally the screen resolution is changed on my machine, for one reason
or another. Last time it was not my own doing, but it was made automatically
to adjust to the lower resolution of a connected video projector.
Anyhow, the net result is the same, all my strategically well placed icons
on the desktop get completely reshuffled. They can of course be repositioned
again, but it is definitively an annoyance.
Is there a way for the system be able to remember the icon positions for the
respective screen resolutions used?

Do I have the correct version of XP?
I've been considering articles either dual-boot of Vist and XP or removing
Vista and installing XP alone. On the eve of the June 30 deadline, I bought
a copy of XP with SP2. I'm using a 7 month-old system with Vista Home Premium
and am not satisfied with it. That version of Vista is not eligible for the
down-grade offered by the manufacturer so I bought a package labled Microsoft
Windows XP Home Edition that includes SP2. The box also says "For PCs with
Windows 95 or earlier, or PCs without Windows." The number 0804 Part NO.
X10-87162 is shown and the authenticity label includes the no NO9-00984.
I am concerned about whether this is the version I need. The statement "For
PCs with Windows 95 or earlier or for PCs with out Windows" seems very

this is the version I need? Thanks for your help. Tag: Try following SRX1070925870ID Tag: 813510

Windows XP crash - files disappear
Hi folks,
I'm wondering if anyone has encountered the following situation and found a
reason for it happening (two seperate machines and slightly different
problems):
I did an install of Office 2003 and service packed it on a machine running
Windows XP SP2. Nothing strange to report. Rebooted the machine a few times
and all was okay. The users took the machine home and office had literally
vanished - it was not on the Start menu and there was no files located within
Program files | Microsoft Office. There was nothing listed in the event
viewer as to why this had happened and the only way I got it back was be
using a System Restore point. It was such a clean disappearance that the only
way I could see it happening was from Add/Remove programs and the user
assured me this had not been done.
A few days later another user is copying a huge file to his desktop and his
machine hangs/crashes. After a reboot, there profile has disappeared and
everything he had on his desktop has gone - files/shortcuts etc. My colleague
used a System Restore point and this resolved the problem.
However, I do not understand how this is happening as it seems very drastic
and I've never seen it before in 6 years of having XP on our desktops. It
also seems that both problems are related as they are exhibiting the same
symptoms. Has anyone else encountered this problem or know of what may cause
it.
I've scoured the knowledge base and cannot see anything that resembles this
or what may cause it to happen. I'm not so concerned for a fix more than what
parameters may cause it! All our machines are fully covered with antivirus
and this has not shown any problems.
Thanks for your help in advance. Tag: Try following SRX1070925870ID Tag: 813424
