Hi Folks,

I recently installed winrar to compress files with, but found that it has
now taken over all of my .exe files. I've uninstalled winrar now, but they
still show up with the winrar icon and having problems accessing some of the
programs that need that .exe file corrected.

Not sure I posted in the right place, if not, please advise...

Thanks for any suggestions or remedies...

Kitti

Try the .exe fix here:

-- Hi K...eeerm some programs have an "associated files" list that you can
choose when you configure them....try reinstalling winrar and go through the
"setup" to see if this is so and if so select "choose none" or whatever it
says... your files and folders should lose the winrar icon.

Hi Guys,

Well, no such luck. I've tried both suggestions, and even removed winrar
where I found it in the registry, somehow, the icons for all the .exe files
still show as .rar files. I've tried changing going through Control Panel in
Folder Options and trying to locate .exe which isn't in there, but it appears
that everything else is. Does yours happen to show a .exe file in it? Maybe
that's the beginings of my issues now...

Thanks for letting me know...

Kitti

I see no entry in my tools -> folder options -> file type, for an exe
extension.
However there are two entires in regedit.
These are the exports of those entries.
I have zone alarm and I suspect the ZaMailSafeExt entries are for that
program. But yes I do have registry entries.
I would not add this to your registry as I have no idea what the
"098f2470......" entry means under persistent handler. I offer them
only as a guide for you to look at your registry.

--------------------
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
@="exefile"
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"
"ZAMailSafeExt"="zl9"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\PersistentHandler]
@="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"
---------------------
and
---------------------
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.exe]
@="exefile"
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"
"ZAMailSafeExt"="zl9"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.exe\PersistentHandler]
@="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"
