    - Desktop icon label problem Using XP Pro, I did something when using a CD label making programme that accidentally made the desktop icons have a blue rectangular label behind the normal white lettering for the icon. This is only on the log in the wife uses, my log in is "normal", white letters under the icons, no "label". I've tried to change all sorts of things to get rid of it, but can only get the label to change colour.Tried ticks in and out of boxes in properties of system/appearance etc. I notice if I go into the icon properties, choose an alternative, and browse, I'm taken to %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll Here I see that folders DRVSTORE and DLLCACHE are in blue font, but the remainder of folders are in black?     - Web pages display weird format Recently my web pages began to display weirdly. My my space pages have no background images on my computer but others can see them, thats just an example because I know what should be there. Other web pages are missing backgrouns and the type font is HUMONGOUS!. There appears to be type over other type, like maybe certain sections are overlapping others. Aol sites show up with HUGE print and I cant zoom them back at all. Both IE and firefox are doing this also. I have no idea what could have caused this and I had HP on the phone for two hours.     - someone please help I was installing a program and another one jumped in too, it's called ieantivirus. Now whenever I click on anything I get a pop-up telling me that I need to install this program or my computer will crash. I have tried uniinstalling it and deleting it but it just keeps coming back.     - Disabling the page file doesn't really disable it. A bug? I tried disabling the pagefile using the "No paging file" option on the advanced tab of "My computer" properties . I restarted the computer, the file pagefile.sys is missing (as it should be), but I still see that windows is paging a lot of memory to a pagefile when I look at the "VM usage" column of most processes on Task Manager. The "page faults" column also shows many page faults for certain applications that I am using. The total memory of all my processes never reaches 1GB, which is half the memory I have (2GB), so there is no reason for windows to swap to a page file. Therefore I tried disabling it, although I know several articles advised not to do so ( Giving not good enough or even wrong reasons in my opinion) I have more than enough RAM (2GB) for all my applications memory needs, but I still see that Windows by default swaps about 1/2 of the application memory usage to the page file on the disk. This happens with almost all applications. For example the total memory usage of firefox with 60 tabs open is ~600MB, and windows swaps ~300MB to the page file on disk according to the Task manager (the "VM usage" column) I am using Windows XP SP3.     - XP Can't Load cos Insufficient memory I'm running XP home with 2.7 Ghz celeron and 1.2M DDR RAM and 2 hard disks formatted into 7/8 partitions. It started by freezing up, then it wouldn't restart - seemed to not find a bootable OS on the 1st hdd and then tried to load win 98 which is not installed(?) on the next hdd, but then says not enough memory clean up the autoexec.bat and config.sys files, followed by the its safe to shutdown message (from win98).     - spring cleaning I want to undertake a project of reorganizing my PC, but am uncertain as to how to exactly proceed. I have: ASUS P5WD2-E Premium Pentium D-805 2.66 gHz Windows XP pro SP2 Corsair XM52 1 G (2x512) DDR2 800 C: WD 2500KS 232g available/ 12.7g used D: WD 2500KS 232G available/ 87.4g used G: external usb HDD 186g available/ 104g used I have all my data on the external drive and all the programs on the C drive. the stuff on the D drive is where I attempted to copy the G onto the D as a backup (so that 87.4g can be wiped) But I abandoned that. I want to RAID 0 the C&D drives, run everything off them and use the G drive as a backup. I do not want to loose all the settings and programs currently on the C drive. So getting all the stuff on Cinto a safe place, then reconfiguring C & D for the RAID; then reloading the settings and programs onto the RAID pair alsong with all the data currently on the G drive. And establishing a good backup/archive system using the G drive properly. maybe I should seek local talent and pay him/her, but I'd really like to try to do this myself as a learning experience. The RAID setup seemed to scare the guy who did the initial install/ setup of my PC. The stuff on the G drive is pretty safe, and I can reload all the programs which are on the c-drive, only getting all the settings working and so firth has been an ongoing process and my free time is limited.     - Adding additional search providers in Internet Explorer 7 I am trying to add additional search providers ie Google and Yahoo and have followed the directions... 1) Open Internet Explorer. 2) Click the arrow to the right of the Search Options button . 3) Click Find More Providers. 4) Click the search provider you want to add. The Add Search Provider dialog box appears. If you want the provider that you just added to be used by default when searching from the Address bar or search box, select the Make this my default search provider check box. 5) Click Add Provider. 6) Repeat steps 4 through 6 for each provider you want to add.     - Restore / Repair / Clean Boot Watching these messages for months, people have bantered around these terms. I use the word restore meaning a restore like Acronis backups. But have never used (and hope not to) the other two. I read a MS KB article on clean boot but no luck. Yes it explained it but missed enough 'whys' for me. Could someone who uses and prescribes these tools explain what they do to your system. Just how much is altered and why do you want to use them. Or links will work. I've searched and of course either get 10000 irrelevant or just not sure what I'm reading. Odd that I've been working in PCs for 40years, building, rebuilding, repairing them, and using them and have never done more than a reload or restore. Do I live in that much of a sheltered life?     - Open Windows in IE6 I would like to have separate windows open whenever I open a new web site. For example, I would like to have Comcast and the New York Yankees site open at the same time, in different windows. I have shared the C: drive on both machines and allowed network users to change files and can access them from either machine. When I run the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and select Home of Office Network as the transfer method I get a message "Windows cannot locate your new computer.     - Trying to find the best way to get everything right xp 64 bit I built a new computer recently and sense it was 64 bit I got xp 64 bit because 90% percent of what I hear of vista is that it competes whith me for bugginess and helping my freind with his new vista machine left me feeling happy with xp but the 64 bit xp is moderately unsuported for drivers and I had to dumb down some bios setting to get it to correctly see my DVD read writter and then a peice of software that I have always wanted to work with dragon naturally speaking 9 cant install and it may not have a patch for 8 to 10 months and I had to find an alternative print driver for my cannon i860 so I am using the bjc 8000 driver and it seems to work, that leaves me a little troubled. I have an old retail version of xp service pack1 but I'd rather leave available for my back up computer. I was considering setting up a dual boot but I ran into a refernce to virtual pc 2007. so I am considering buying a oem version of windows xp 32 bit because buying an aditional licence would only save me forty dollars out of 280 and I would have to deal with a lot of updates that can sometimes be tricky. I saw a oem version for 130. But I wonder if there is a better option. Other than that anything xp 64 bit recognizes and installs correctly runs buetifuly and without flaw. As I move through various webpages or sites, I keep getting Windows pop-ups (I assume they're Windows, they may be Internet Explorer alone) which say: "You are about to view pages over a secure connection." or "You are about to leave a secure internet connection." Then, I'm offered the option of not seeing that pop-up again (I assume for that site alone). Next time, it seems to still come up. These little pop-ups are driving me nuts.     - Limited Accounts - Netwrok Access Have an XP Pro system with three user accounts, one Administrator and two Limited so that they cannot add/remove programs. If we connect to the internet via the LAN all users can access it. But we have installed a Wireless USB Adaptor and although the Administrator user can see the WAP and get on the internet, the Limited users can see the WAP but the adaptor keeps disconnecting. Have asked D-Link how to fix but they say its a Windows account problem and we need to change the user settings.
