    - Another issue... This has just happened recently, and I can't think of anything I've done to cause this to happen... 1 exception: the other day I came home for lunch, and when I came back after work, my computer had been restarted... not like a non-use lockout... restarted... as if my computer had installed something and shutdown on it's own. Since then, my optical drives do not work. I have a DVD burner (EMPREX DVD-RW 16x IDE) and a CD burner (LG HL-DT-ST-CD-RW GCE 8240B). The drives show up in my device manager, but upon inserting any media, nothin happens. At the least there should be a Windows dialog box asking me wat I want to do with the media just inserted... no autorun for games...NOTHING!!!     - Available physical memory My computer (OS Windows XP Home Edition) is running very slow and I believe the subject above may be the cause. my system information or msinfo32.exe (start, all programs, accessories, system tools, system information) states that my total physical memory is 256.00 MB but my available physical memory is only at 43.65 MB (For reference, my total virtual memory is at 2.00 GB and available virtual memory is at 1.96 GB).     - SP3 again: The hell with them! Hello All! I have Windows updates set to download and ask before installing. This is the second time that it has been announced that SP3 had been downloaded. I turned off everything including all aspects of the McAfee security suite and the update proceeded. After a long time and all sorts of messages about backup, a loud drum beat announced "Access denied" and the "Update Removal Wizard (or moron)" commenced. As far as I can tell, things are as they were before the "update" but my reaction to Microsoft is "The hell with them" unless I am specifically informed what is needed to install this update. There is no reason why I should do background reading unless Microsoft tells me to do so.     - Problems with my netgear wg111v2 dongle. Hey guys i have looked through other posts and i cant seem to find anything to help me out, Im reinstalling my windows XP on my desktop, and i am using the dongle, my router is the DG834GB Version 4.3, i have everything installed correctly and i have connected everything, my connection speed is excellent and everything seems connected, green light everything. When i try to go on the net it asks me to work offline as i have no connection, i firstly thought that this was a lag spike and when i tried to check my maximium and minimum speeds is says my destination host is unreachable. anyone have any pointers? im pretty sure my router doesnt have to be installed as i have to laptops and i have no problem connecting to them with my built in wireless.     - Offline files - The parameter is incorrect Hi, Classic question but looking for a different answer. I got a user that worked offline all week, her work is crucial and it'll be hard to do it again. I got that error when she is trying to synchronize on my network: the parameter is incorrect. She has XP SP2. I am looking for a different answer than this article from microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/230738 Is it possible to recover from that error other than just clearing the cache? As I said previously those modified files are crucial. Another thing is it's the 2nd or 3rd time that laptop has that offline files issue. Is there a reason for that issue to happen, habits to avoid?     - Tabbed Browsing Freezes For a few months i have had a problem when trying to use Internet Explorer. Simply using Explorer as a single Tab is fine, however when trying to open another Tab, it freezes, and i have little option but to 'End Procces' in Task Manger.     - Fatal errors browsing Word docs saved as .mht and .htm I've searched a few times and can't find any new hits on .mht issues, so here it is. I have a simple Word document (12 pages long with about 10 embedded images) which I have saved as both .mht and as .htm (and the .htm format puts the images in a similarly-named folder). The .mht and .htm documents can be viewed online (via Javascript window.open()) without an issue, but after closing the window the original (parent) browser window crashes. The crash is *not* immediate. It takes some time and seems to require activity in the original window, although there is no direct interaction which triggers it -- that is, it does not happen immediately after a click or other input. Just opening the .mht from my desktop causes the same error. Vital statistics: Windows XP, IE 7.0.5730.11. Word doc saved from Word 2003. I am up-to-date on all Microsoft updates as far as I know.     - Can't scroll in Firefox 3.0.1 running XP SP3 I have a Dell desktop running XP Office Pro, which I upgraded to SP3 about a week ago. Ever since the upgrade, I can't use the slide on the vertical scroll bar when running Firefox 3.0.1 When I try to scroll, it works sometimes, but after a few scrolls, the screen and all open windows lock-up, forcing a hard-reboot.     - 'Error in intialization' Hi everyone, I have recently been experiencing a problem with my seldom-use Averatec 6200 which is running SP2. This machine is mainly used fo some light word processing, browsing, and occasional DVD playback. About four days ago, I began to experience the following: During the course of normal use (e.g. running IE and/or MS Offic Word), a small window will open which reads 'Error in initialization - parameter is not valid.' The window contains an 'Okay' button at th bottom. This button is not clickable, and hitting the 'Enter' key seem to be the only way of clearing the window. After clearing this window, the screen goes entirely black, and then new window opens which reads 'Index was out of range. Must b non-negative and less than the collection size. Parameter name: index. As with the first window, there is an unclickable 'Okay' button. Hittin the 'Enter' key 2-3 times clears this window and restores the compute to the state it was in prior to blackscreening. The frequency of this error varies. Sometimes, it will occur every fiv minutes. At other times, it may only happen once during a given session I have been unable to isolate the cause of the error. I originall suspected IE was the culprit, but I have since seen the error occu while IE was not running. Through extensive scans with AVG, Ad-Adware and Spybot, I have ruled out the possibility that some malware coul have infected my computer and caused settings to change. I have searched for errors similar to mine, and while I have foun reports of very similar error messages (the exact same text even), al of the errors like this I have seen on other forums have occurred whil using Visual Basic .NET, Windows Forms Designer, ASP DataGrid, and th like.     - Weird crash - long read warning We have a central secured wireless Dell PC at work that all the salespeople use at work. It has run trouble free for a few years, running XP Home, SP2. Yesterday something weird happened. I cam in and my coworker who is an senior citizen technophobe, told me that the cleaners that night had knocked the plug out of the wall and that it took him and another to plug it back in and get the PC back running. Incidentally, they stupidly leave the computer running and not logged off, so it is also a given that the cleaning crew probably goes online at night when they shouldn't. (I changed that policy yesterday after fixing the PC). When the old guy finished checking his sports news, (he never closes the browser, he only minimizes it) I closed everything and tried to open my customer database, gone. Got a dialogue files necessary to run PCSync were missing. Tried opening IE7, got an hourglass instead. So, I did what I would normally do, I ran System Restore, using a Checkpoint from the previous day. After system Restore completed and rebooted, I got the Windows boot screen, then a BSOD "GDI32.dll error". I got the Dell boot dick and copied over a fresh file, then rebooted. Another BSOD, "WINSRV error". So I copied over winsrv.dll, still got same BSOD. So I decided to boot to the CD (OEM DELL XPHome SP1) and run a repair install. All seemd to be ok afterwards, except now IE won't run. I get a pop-up saying dll library links missing. Sh*t. Next step, I reinstalled SP2. That should fix it right? wrong. After reapplying SP2, IE now worked but now the USB ports won't work. The did before I installed SP2. I was able to reinstall my PCSync database and everything else works. I had to change out all USB devices to PS2 (mouse, etc.) What fun, not. Why did the USB suddenly stop working? and what could have caused al this trouble? If the old man left the PC running with IE open and someone knocked the power plug out of the wall, would that have corrupted system files? Supposedly this PC has MacAfee running on it, bit could a virus have still infected it? Why would my PCSync app be partially uninstalled? Weird, huh? Anyone have any clue what could have happened?     - xp antivirus virus I got the xp antivirus virus on my Dell Inspiron. lancelhof.com has a procedure but it begins w/ a dll file that my laptop can't register because it can't find the entry point. I heard of someone else who solved the virus problem by doing a restore, tho I can't get any details of what that entailed.     - Problems with inbound connections I have several PCs in W2K3 SBS network. One machine has developed a problem as follows; 1) file and print sharing is not working 2) I cannot remote desktop to it 3) I cannot ping it 4) all outbound connections are working fine The PC is running XP SP2 I have tried all the obvious (to me) things; 1) there is not virus or malware (have done a full scan with norton and hijackthis respectively) 2) there is no firewall issue (machine has same ruleset as other PC's) and issue is the same regardless of whether firewall is up or down 3) RPC service is running 4) event log is running 5) running ethereal/wireshark I can see remote connections coming into the PC on the correct ports but the PC does not reply to them 6) if I type in a share locally (i.e. doing \\machinename\ ) all shares are listed 7) I can run an nmap port scan - it just returns the ip and mac addresses and tells me all ports are filtered 8) I used MSCONFIG to reboot machine with the bare minimum of microsoft services and the problem persists Unfortunately this problem has been ongoing for a while now so do not have a viable restore point.     - Hmmm password problem No this isn't a 'i forgot my pass', 'i lost X password', 'admin pass i hijacked' etc. Last week i downloaded a file and it was a chain trojan. Ye compromised system yada yada yada. Well it was more for that Anti-viru 2008 scam program...well it messed some reg entries. So I run Spybot i fixes a few(no control panel...log off etc) well then i accidentally le it go to screensaver and i have it set to go to the welcome screen(s gotta relog) well I type in my pass...all times correct...caps lock of and dbl and triple checked typing. Did this about 5 times. And previously had the pass thing set to lock for 1 min after 3 fails. Wel that all failed so i tried the account thats limited and has n pass...also refused...as with the 2 other users. Well so needless to sa i gotta reset. I go to safe mode...clean up the obvious programs and fi a cpl entries etc. Next is a file ingrained into a login program so it cant be removed an it replaces its registry entries on restart so i started with windows x cd and using the command prompt there manually deleted it then remove it from the registry. yes it was a confirmed virus(all reg keys and ad date pointed to such and such and its actions). Well I log back in still have a cpl(go.google.com redirect and th tdss). I download malwarebytes antimalware and scan and remove what can. Then I downloaded sdfix to get rid of tdss and its rootkit. Al those are gone and such. I fixed the reg entries(time, log off, active desktop etc). now th welcome screen error still exists. If I turn off the welcome screen can lock and relog fine but if i turn it on and fast user it screws up Tho note I can login normally when i first startup. I'm thinking its: A) A corrupt file attributed to the user profiles. B) A still infected file run when someone logs in(Isass.exe spikes i cpu usage at startup...its a system process and in the prope location). C) A registry that's changed. D) A faulty file attributed to the Fast user switching/welcome screen. Can anyone provide some help or a point in the right direction. Googl is seemingly useless...found a person with the same problem a few day ago but can't find again. He said something bout screensaver was corrup I believe. Now I want to fix without reinstalling if possible otherwise I can suc it up and just logoff if someone else needs to use(its a shared comp an originally I would Start+L and their profile would have n password...yes it was working right before the virus was activated).     - Desktop not showing anything (no start button, toolbar, icons, etc.) Friday before I left for the day programs just suddenly started erroring out and then i got a BSOD. I had to go home, so i just let it reboot itself and left for the day. Came in this morning and it looks like it was trying to do a scandisk over the weekend (which only takes a few minutes) and was stopped on part 2 of 3... so, i shut it down, started it up and let it go through it again (which it accomplished)...but, once it started up again I could login, but had no desktop icons, no start bar, nothing. I can do a CRTL + ALT + DEL to bring of the task manager, but that is it. I can also login using safe mode, but I can't see anything in there either. It seemed like Explorer.exe process wasn't running, but when I tried to start it (Task Manager > New Task) it wouldn't start (once it shut down again)... The last thing i did before it had problems was install the new Itunes 8 and was moving stuff to my iPod...     - Word save gremlin Recently a problem saving filenames with Word97. If you try and save a file called "haddock" it will be saved as h.doc. All filenames in word format are shortened in this way. Used to work fine, on XP+SP2 home. Have tried: reinstalling, removing and purging registry, then reinstalling, deleting normal.dot and global.dot Virus scanners detect no infection, macrovirues protection turned on.     - password Basically, Someone that works for me downloaded that scam virus. The xp2008 antivirus. I understand how to get rid of it, by logging in to safe mode. So I went and changed the settings to always log into safemode, then I restarted to get into safemode, but we forgot the password and the user name for the computer. The computer is on a server so normal log in is into the server, but that user name and password does not work for logging into safe mode.     - accidental re-install of xp home edition *sigh* my 10 yo daughter accidentally re-installed xp. (this is not the first time) However, this time, she must have deleted the first xp. I can log on fine and access the info in her files and her brothers files from the original xp, but i cant get into my documents or pictures or music. I retreived her pictures and things, but i would really like to get at my email, addresses, pictures (especially) and documents. But when I try to get into my folder, its says access denied.     - SP3 and Windows xp home edition I have a Dell Inspiron B130 laptop. I installed SP3 last night and when I turned it on this morning I'm getting an error message that says an attempt was made to execute nonexecutable memory.     - Windows Freezes at Logon after DL Windows updates This computer had no passwords set for either Administrator or Maureen Kennedy, therefore there was NO password for me to remember or forget. And I always had gotten into computer with minilogon (one user) and never even had seen the welcome screen logon screen before. Working late at night on 9/10 and into morning of 9/11 when I ended and was closing down desktop computer which I don't use alot, windows screen came up and said it had files to install and to let it do so and it would close down computer. Being tired, I did not bother to see what updates it was processing and just click go ahead and install. The next day, the computer had shut me out starting windows normally and then starting deskstop background with picture but with NO icons and NO taskbar (therefore no start button either) AND THEN s witched to the Welcome Screen with the chess pieces and my name. I clicked my name Maureen Kennedy, and it would start to say it was loading my personal preferences, then switch to loggin me off, then saying saving your settings. Then the bottom of the welcome screen turned up a red button to turn off Maureen Kennedy. Then when you clicked turn off, the normal turn off screen came up and windows shut down. Trying the config at F8 of Directory Services Restore mode, made it run a little program where it said C drive was clean but couldn't read bunch of symbols (which seemed to indicate to me the D partition). The 80 GIG Hard drive is in two partitions with C and D drive on HD. Then it went on to the same Welcome screen again. I have tried every configuration that F8 will bring up. In hitting Safe Mode a black screen came up that filled a whole page saying something like multi rd disk loading a bunch of drivers and then into a totally black screen that says safe mode in all 4 corners and across the top says Win XP (R) build 2600 XPSP_Sp2_gdr.070227 -2254 Service Pack 2 That screen shows administrator logon screen, and clicking OK on that brings up message "That the system could not log you on. Make sure your username and domain are correct. Then type your password again." I don't know where this DOMAIN thing came from because I don't belong nor ever set up a domain of any kind. I am just one simple 60 year old woman with a desktop computer and a laptop. Now I have had slaved a second HD to that computer and used that HD to backup info from the Master HD which is the one causing all the problems now. So I took out the HD's and reversed slave into master and master into slave. With the new HD, I CAN access all the information on the bad Windows startup HD AND I see that something I had downloaded from windows that evening created a NEW Userser name in my documents and settings - called Administrator.SONYVAIO670. That subDirectory was established that same day of 9/11 and it was the only thing on that hard drive that was new. SonyVaio670 is the Computer name I used on that hard drive. And in the Documents and Settings folder there are two other weird subdirectorys - one is Temp and the other is Temp.Administrator.SONYVAIO670 . Those two subdirectories seemed to be established in 2006 and have just been hanging in the documents and settings all this time - the only thing I think I found is that they may have been created when I was going to switch my AOL from AOL7 to AOL9 and I decided I didn't like it and removed AOL9 back to AOL 7 as those are the only directory that has the same dates as these temp subdirectories in Documents and Folders section. So to recap here - I never set passwords on this computer HD that is requiring a password. Something I DL from windows picked up and established a new "user?" in Documents and Settings calling it Administrator.SONYVAIO670 (yes I tried logging in with this and it didn't work either). The Hard drive is accessible and readable as a slave. The only other niggling thing is whether I set up a "network" or not - Does setting up wireless connection to internet set up a network? One file I read about Nt user says something like congratulations you have set up wireless network. Just incase it was that, I used the wireless network number as password, it didn't work, tried the WEP number from wireless and that didn't work either under Administrator. So I still cannot access the HD when it is master and not slave. I would much prefer to be able to do so, because the other HD hasn't had updates on widows since 2004 and I would have to install alot of programs inorder for the registries to be right on that older HD for the programs to work. I figured out how to use the OEM recovery disks Sony gave with computer but I am reluctant to use them right now because it seems to indicate it would do complete wipe of C drive but leaving info OK on D partition.
