        • Windows Movie Maker problem When I attempt to trim the beginning of a clip I often experience this problem: If I trim too much off in the beginning, the thumbnail of the video in the timeline or storyboard turns green and when I preview the clip, the video is gone (only audio left). This happens when I try to trim off more than a few seconds in the beginning of a clip. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, how can I fix this? There is often too much at the beginning of a clip that needs to be trimmed to leave it as is. I've also tried trimming the clip in a separate program, but then Windows Movie Maker refuses to import it. Tag: below news is read by coding Big 5 Tag: 802972

        • Chkdsk doesn't find bad sectors in unused space I know that Chkdsk /r is supposed to locate and repair bad sectors, but I have discovered that it only does so on the parts of the hard drive that contain data. I have a few old crappy hard drives with known bad sectors on them that I used for this test. Using an IDE to USB adapter, I formatted the drives as fat32 and ran Chkdsk on my XP machine...no errors. I moved the drives to a Windows 98 machine and ran Scandisk...bingo, it found bad sectors. Next, I re-formatted the drives and put them back on my XP machine. As before, Chkdsk did not find any bad sectors. However after I copied test data to the drive, Chkdsk found the same number of errors that Win98's Scandisk did. Obviously, Chkdsk does not find bad sectors on a drive unless data has already been written there...which in my opinion is kinda stupid. :-/ Long story short, is there another disk diagnostic program I can use that properly scans an entire disk, just like Win98's old Scandisk program used to? A previous thread mentioned SpinRite. Would that do a better job than Chkdsk for locating bad sectors over the entire disk (even in unused space)? Tag: below news is read by coding Big 5 Tag: 802941

        • Salvage Win98 files on old PC to XP PC? I have an old PC with Windows 98 OS that has 'died'. I can't boot it up; prior to full failure the CD ROM drive failed, then the floppy drive failed. Now Windows won't boot up at all. I THINK there are a few files on the old hard drive that I would like to access (old emails). I am currently using another PC with Windows XP Home, SP2. Is there a way I can hook up the old hard drive to the XP PC? Will XP be able to read the drive and files? I'd rather not try to install the old hard drive in the XP PC, if possible. Is there some sort of technical gadget that will let me hook up the old hard drive via USB? Also, is it possible that the old hard drive could be infected with a virus? I've always wondered why the whole PC slowly lost one component at a time until it was dead. Tag: below news is read by coding Big 5 Tag: 802903

        • Cluster size problem I converted a drive from FAT32 to NTFS and ended up with 512 byte clusters. I did not know this was a problem until reading posts on this list and by then it was too late. What can I do now? • Windows will not start I was having tons of lockup and blue screen errors. I tried to troubleshoot and run multiple diagnostics - to no avail. In frustration I transferred all files and folders to my second drove and then performed a new install of XP on my primary drive. As I was bring files back into the C drive I started having lockups. I continued to bring back files. Eventually the system locked up - I could not clear so I powered down manually. Now the system will not come back up saying that the services.exe and lsass.exe failed to intialize properly ( it shows to errors for each of the .exe files). I opened up the recovery console. I ran fixboot and ran chkdsk. System locked up in checkdsk. I tried to make copies of special boot disk - nothing works. • diskpart in Recovery Console doesn't allow activation of partition Dear all, My XP PC is not booting ("no bootable device" or something similar). I would like to found out which partition is considered as active since I suspect there is no active partition at the moment due to an error I made on the Disk Management Console before rebooting. However, using the Recovery Console from the XP disk, the utility diskpart does not seem to allow anything more than the creation and deletion of new partitions. It seems to have a very different functionality to the utility accessible from Windows. Is there any other way therefore to check which partition is active? • HELP - Lost data after reinstalling XP My laptop is a DELL Inspiron 6000. OS : XP Home edition. During boot I got the error message : "No master boot sector found" or something similar. After several attempts I decided to reinstall the OS (XP Pro, from an old CD, as Dell did not give me a Windows CD), as I had done in the past on another PC, believing it would keep my application programs and data. Unfortunately that did not happen, as i found myself with a bare-bones OS and no trace whatsoever of other data on the HD. Can I recover the old data ? I downloaded a couple of utilities but they are hard to manage and no appreciable results were obtained. Can someone please help ? I am in a terrible fix, as I use the laptop for my work. I had all my invoices stored there, along with clients' data and emails, three-years-worth of stuff. Thanks in advance. Mike Tag: below news is read by coding Big 5 Tag: 802814

        • Freeze My XP Home edition with SP2 on a Compaq Presario desktop will freeze on occasion; sometimes during startup at the XP screen, sometimes on standby. It's quite random, and rarely at the same exact spot. Pressing ctr-alt-del does nothing. It's been suggested that the computer might be overheating, so I cleaned the dust out of the case and made sure that all three fans are operating, but it did not cure the hang/freeze problem. I also shut down screen savers and auto standby functions, and disabled all unnecessary startup programs/processes, to no avail. Any other ideas out there? • Neeed help with a "windows - sysytem error"...Thank you Hello, Hope someone can help me out. I keep getting an error popping on the screen. It is a small gray box with a red circle with an "x" in it. The title of it is; "Windows- System error" and the error in the box is; "Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API." My PC specs are ass follow; AMD X2 processor, 2 Gig of Ram, Nvidia graphic card and runs XP pro. Not much installed on the PC, a couple of small programs for work, windows office and I use Firefox extensively for work as well. BTW, I reinstalled windows twice recently and I keep getting that error even after the fresh install. The main problem is that if I get the error while I am logged off the system, I can't get back in, I have to shut the PC off manually to be able to log back in. If I get the error while I am in windows, I can simply close the error window and keep on doing what I am doing. Thank you very much in advance. Tag: below news is read by coding Big 5 Tag: 802806

        • intermitent sound I have Windows XP 5.1 and Windows Media Player11. When I play any file in any mediaplayer or from a cd the songs skips like an old phonograph. Alomost in a streaming issue. i upgraded my ram thinking that 256 was not enough and added a 1g since I added a wirless network however it did not solve the problem. • Should I use KB909095 to fix hibernate problem I have had two laptops now which have failed to hibernate properly because of 2Gb or more of RAM. The first is nearly four years old and I applied KB909095 to it and that fixed the problem. My latest laptop only a few months old has 4GB of RAM and is now suffering the same problem. I resisted applying KB909095 because the EXEs in question appear to have been replaced by later versions. However I know there are different services branches also, so not sure whether one is really an update of the other. Does anyone know if its safe to apply the hotfix now given the newer versions of files already installed? I really would like to sort this out on my new laptop as it fails to hibernate everytime I try at the moment after a couple of hours using it. Thanks Tag: below news is read by coding Big 5 Tag: 802768

        • Sound, Video, Game controllers (Drivers) Hi guys, I have a Dell Dimension 8200 running Windows XP Pro SP2 with a TBS Santa Cruz Sound card. It is working perfectly until I bought and installed a Logictech Orbit AF webcam. During installation, it screwed up my sound drivers rendering my PC without sound. When I checked the device manager, the device drivers have yellow exclamtion marks on them and the device status have code 39. I have reinstalled the latest driver for this sound card and reinstalled the drivers but XP won't let me saying that it cannot find a driver better than I currently have. To make matters worse, the Dell technician I called uninstalled the other lines as well such as Audio codecs, video codecs, legacy, etc. None of my restore points work. I suspect that the registry has something to do with the new drivers not being reinstalled. Can you guys suggest something to bring back the sound to my PC along with the XP audio and video codecs short of reinstalling Windows XP? Thanks in advance for your help.
