Help with System Recovery, please!!!
Hi,
I was having problems with my computer and tried to do a system restore. It
ended up telling me that it couldnâ??t restore it and no changes would be made.
I shut down computer and when I turned it on the next day, the icons were
huge on the desktop and I couldnâ??t access anything. There was no taskbar and
when I did a ctrl alt delete the task mgr came up very large and I was not
able to shut the computer down. I turned it off was going to try safe mode
but could not access it. Nothing happened when I hit F8 key so finally
decided to do a system recovery hitting the F10 key. I was aware that I
would go back to factory computer settings and would have do a lot of updates
and installs. It went through the process and welcomed me, etc. and then
went to Windows XP Home screen and said to wait. So I waited and waited and
I am still waiting. It doesnâ??t leave that screen. The hourglass will move
if I move the mouse, but otherwise, nothing is happening. I am afraid to
turn it off.
Can anyone help, please?
Thanks, Tag: again xp2 sp3 Tag: 807717

SP2 Install Failure
Have received Installation Failure Code 0x8007F01E. I am not able to find
this error in the Windows Update error listing.
I am finally (at long last) trying to upadte my VAIO PCV-RX550 XP Home SP1.
The biggest move was to finally install SP2. I had been reluctant to do so
over the past couple of years due to hearing about so many problemw. It is
critical for me to do so now because most anti-virus programs will not run
without it and my computer is currently in a compromised situation.
If anyone can assist me with this error I would be grateful!

Black-screen and deactivate OS?
After (interupted?) merger of 2 part. wiht P. Magic didnt XP boot. I found
in W2000 my XP.-part wasnt active so it got activated, then no OS started in
that PC. Can it be deactivated without an OS?
That PC starts with Compaq, then get black with a small twinkle up to the
left. Install repair is run on W2k and doesnt work in Xp. Chkdsk /r, Bootcfg
rebuild, fixboot and fixmbr is run. A new Os is installed on another part.
Nothing helped so far but all content seem to be in place. Old threads and

Easy transfer autostarts on XP PC
I transferred what files I needed from my older XP PC to a new Vista
machine. Now whenever I boot up my XP PC, the XP PC opens up a folder onto
the desktop called "XXX". I can click it closed, but it is a pain to have to
do every time I turn that computer on.
I tried to locate the program name running msconfig.exe, but could not find
it in particular.
I also went to "Add/Remove Programs...", found the program, but said that
certain other programs I have would/could possibly not run right if I
removed the Easy Transfer application...one of which is UPnP.
Is there another way to remove the Easy transfer program? Perhaps reverting
to an earlier system restore point?
Thanks for your help. Tag: again xp2 sp3 Tag: 807691
Accessing my network from remote sites
Ive heard that one can have a network in office on a server and set up a
system whereby you can access the actual server and get to ones files. How
is this done? What do I need to do? Is in an IT job or someone I contact
via internet? or both.

My Computer and USB Storage Devices
Recently, my USB port was registering F drive. Then it grabbed onto the G:
drive which is my project drive on the server. I got the G: drive back to
the project files but now the USB ports dont register any drive to access in
MY COMPUTER. Thus I can t access or use the USB ports for file transfer.
How to I get these temp drives to show up in MY COMPUTER window again. The
USB ports are working, so says the Device Manager.................I
uninstalled but no luck there. Hopefully, this is a easy fix. The portable
storage works on other computers in the network, just not mine anymore. UGH!
PS thanks in advance for all your expertise, I could live to be 100 and never

Weird Disk Space Issue
I have a strange problem with my ThinkPad T61 running Windows XP Pro. The
laptop has a 120 hard drive, the C-Drive is 105 GB where Windows XP is
installed and there is 15 GB ThinkPad recovery partition. Here is the
problem. The other day I noticed I had only 1.5 GB of free disk space left
on the C-Drive. I knew that was impossible. I opened up Windows Explorer for
the C-Drive and added up the space used by all the folders and files listed
on the root of the C-Drive, including the hidden ones. The total comes to 52
GB being used but Windows says I am using 103.5 GB. I have no idea where the
other 51.5 GB is. It is really strange. I have never seen a problem like
this before. Anyone have an idea what might be going on here? Thanks for the
help. Tag: again xp2 sp3 Tag: 807684

had to reinstall XP on replacement hd. The computer didn't come w/a install

Its asks for activation so I click to activate and the window says it's
already activated. Fine. I insert the original install cd, click upgrade,
input the coa key on the side of the machine and hello-invalid key. How can I
complete the install and get this properly activated? I know the key is valid
because I bought the machine new. Is it because I'm using a SP1 disc from

Check Disk started with a warning
Running WinXP Pro (svc pk2). Upon bootup what appeared to be Check Disk
started with a warning the the disk had to be checked because file security
identifiers were incorrect or corrupt. It looked like all my sysyem files
were checked..... then all the files "security identifer changed to default."
After that my system operation was significantly changed. Common features
were missing or inoperable: no drag-n-drop files between folders, copy is
there but no paste, all files in 'Network Connections' disappeared. I now
suspect a virus; but I take exceptional precautions and run multiple
protection programs to avoid infection.
If this scenario is familiar to anyone, please advise!!
Now my question is, can I reload WinXP and "repair" the damage. I thought
that you could run install from the command line (with a switch) that would
allow an installation to reload over a previous install.
Would hate to go bake to scratch. Help.....

Windows Explorer Closes
Can anyone please help me with Windows (not internet) Explorer? Everytime I
view my video folder explorer encounters a problem and closes. It's the same
whatever way I try to do it, through my documents, my computer etc. All
other folders such as photo's and documents are fine, it's just the video
folder. I've tried deleting it and making a new one but still the same.
I've run a repair installation of XP, no change.
I've tried the following solution:
1. Open command-console (START > RUN > CMD.EXE)
2. enter the command: regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
3. enter the command: regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
The reason for the crash is a problem with media previews in explorer
(explorer calculates a thumbnail view of an image or the first frame of a
video file). By disabling this feature (which is useless anyway) explorer
stops crashing.
I don't want to use this method because it also removes my photo thumbnails
and I don't want to have to go through them all individually to find the one
I want.
If anyone can help with this I will be eternally grateful, it's driving me
nuts!!
Many thanks Tag: again xp2 sp3 Tag: 807664

Funny Story
Funny Story. Add or Remove programs simply stopped showing anything in its
programs list. Just blank. No message saying it would take a few minutes
to populate the list. Nothing. Changed sort options to see if I could wake
it up. NADA. It cycled like it thought it was changing the sort order of a
populated list of nothing. Very odd. I tried restarting several times,
like 5 I think. NADA. Still no programs in the list.
So, thinks I, better get my butt onto an XP newsgroup and see what is to be
said about this. So I did. I even dillegently read through all the recent
entries to see if someone posted something abou this and SP3. No entries.
So I opened this very entry that I am typing in right now. I decided to
give it one more try and BAM it works.

Program groups causing slow boot?
I recently did a manual rearrange of the program groups for my username, the
only user of the system. I also installed Microsoft Flight Sim X and updated
my nVidia video driver around the same time, but I THINK that's coincidental
to my problem.
What's happening now is whenever I reboot, the system gets to the point
where it displays the wallpaper, then appears to just hang for about 10
minutes before displaying the desktop icons!!! Weird, huh? What made me
think it might have something to do with the program groups is that I
contacted nVidia tech support for help in case it had to do with the driver
update, and they asked for a copy of my sysinfo. When I went to generate
that .nfo file, it hung for a long time in the program groups section!!
HELP!!! This is REALLY annoying whenever I have to reboot! Any ideas or
suggestions??

UPHClean and Problematic Profile
Hi all,
I have a PC that is showing up errors 1500, Warning 1527 and Warning 1524 in
Event Viewer using a different Profile on the same PC. An error* message
comes up on the PC when I try to load the problematic Profile. I read on the
Internet and also on MS technet site that I need to install UPHClean on the
PC to either cure or help troubleshoot the Profile problem. After installing
UPHClean I rebooted the PC and tried to login in the problematic Profile
still got the same error* message. I went into a working Profile on the PC
and looked in the Event Viewer, I saw the error messages above listed in it.
Is there anyway I can get some feedback from the UPHClean on what it thinks
are the reason for the error* message below or error at the top of my post?
Can it in someway fix the Profile problem? I have been look up the net and
haven't found any instruction on how I should use UPHClean besides installing
it.
Regards,
Fi.

Problem with possible SP3 install
Yesterday, Windows notified that updates were ready to be download. There
were two update, Defender Update and SP3. I clicked OK to download. After a
minute of so, the tray security shield disappeared. After that any attempt
to open Windows Explorer resulted in Explorer freezing up. When I used the
task manager, my desktop blanked out and when it came back, most of tray
icons were MIA. Most if not all MS programs would not run. I tried the
shortcuts, the menu and the run line. The more I tried, the worse it got
until I had the pull the plug to reboot.
The problem remained thru many reboots done mostly via the dropdown shutdown
options from the task manager.
Then I decided to reboot via the shutdown menu and I noticed the Shut Down
Icon had a security shield and a notice that I had shut down to install an
important update. Is this SP3? If so why did it begin its install without a
notification? Other updates always say Update Are Ready to Install and
request permission.
I selected Shut Down to install the unidentified important update. Now my
computer display is alternating between "Installing Update 1 of 1" and
"Don't Unplug or Turn Off you Computer, It will shut down automatically".
It's has been like this now for over three hours with no end in sight. The
Network Activity light flashes occasionally and there in no detectable hard
drive activity.
How long should the update take?

Iexplorer and Windows Explorer will not open
Hi,
A friend's computer will not open Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer.
There is no error message. The hourglass comes up, then disappears. He is
running XP, but I don't know if it is home version or professional. I think
it has SP2 on it. The machine is probably 8 years old.
It was working fine, then he turned it off for a week. The machine loaded
some MacAfee and Windows Updates when he turned it on. Will a system restore
work?
I had him go to: Start - Run then typing in - 'iexplore about:blank' He
got a message that iexplore could not be found or something like that.
I also tried opening internet explorer without add-ons, going to Start - All
Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Internet Explorer (No Add-ons), but
the option for No Add-ons was not there. He only had Internet Explorer in
there and it did not open.
I tried to search for the ie.inf file using Start - Search, but the search
window did not open.
I tried to Open Windows Explorer from Start - All Programs - Accessories -
Windows Explorer, but it did not open and no error message. I also tried the
keyboard command of "Windows+E" with the same result.
His Outlook Express is still woking and he is able to get his messages off
the Internet Service Provider's Server.
He called his ISP and they had him run something that asked for the XP Home
Edition CD. He got the machine from a friend and does not have the CD. I
have a Windows Professional XP CD. Will the professional one work?
Sorry for the lengthy post. I know enough not to play with the registry or
rename files randomly.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

Still can't log in thru admin screen
Mark,
As I mentined I tried Safe mode, ALL categories. When in Safe mode Command
Prompt I'm asked to "Please select the operating system to start:". The only
option is Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. When I select that it takes me
to the Admin login in screen and my troubles start all over again. I can't
log in as I'm immediately logged out. It does load my 'preferences' then
immediately logs me out. It doesn't matter if I'm in safe mode or normal
mode. I even tried to load from the "D: drive with the "Application and
Driver Recovery DVD". I also tried to reload XP from the D drive but can't
get past the admin login page.
I reset the defaults in the BIOS, I've done a self-test on the hard drive in
the BIOS to no avail.

Boot problem, new motherboard and psu, now it gets are as loading drivers in Safe Mode mup.sys then restarts.
'Hi everyone,
Boot problem, new motherboard and psu, now it gets are as loading drivers in
Safe Mode mup.sys then restarts.
Windows XP Home.
Replaced the motherboard with a very similar motherboard but from a
different manufacturer, it has the same main chipset on it. Also, using the
same cpu/ram/hdd/cd so no other hardware change except for the motherboard
and psu.
Problem:
Select normal boot and system will get as far as blackscreen where it
*should* load the XP loading screen but it doesn't get that far, instead if
restarts.
Safe Mode - F8 - Gets as far as loading the drivers, about 25 are being
loaded, and then it always stops on MUP.SYS. Everytime. Not sure if it's
MUP.SYS that has problem, or the thing after it.
I don't have a win xp home cd, just an xp pro cd. A bit stuck here.
I did try loading up XP Pro temporarily on a seperate folder so that I could
get to the hard drive using Explorer and see if any files were corrupt, or
try to do some maintenance from inside XP Pro, but I'm a bit stuck now.
I also tried to do some repair using the XP Pro cd before I installed XP
Pro, but that didn't seem to help.

created during the install. I have used the same software (i.e.
scanner and printer drivers etc...) on the other systems and the
drivers for the hardware (NIC, video card etc...) are off the cd that
was supplied with the system so a virus should not be an issue.
The bios, usb ports and other hardware should be fine because Linux is
running like a champ. The other desktop systems, which are
identical, work with Linux and Windows with no issues.
Any ideas what is causing this issue Tag: again xp2 sp3 Tag: 807563

Can browse files in Explorer, can't in Office (word\excel)
Greetings. I am trying to solve a mystery and maybe someone has seen this
before.
Computers - XP/SP2 with all patches, Office2003/SP2
I have 2 people in my orginization that can use Windows Explorer to view
files on multiple mapped drives with no issues When they use File, Open in
Word or Excel, the computer stops responding and the customers have to Task
Manager to close Word or Excel. If they double click a file in windows
Explorer, the file willl open with no issues. Not sure what could be
casuing this behavior. There is nothing in error or application logs that
provides any clue.
Has anyone seen this before? Tag: again xp2 sp3 Tag: 807558

Win Error 142 in simulation program: Refer.mdb, isinteg.exe
Dear News,
I am using a so-called 'finite-element' simulation program
to study materials. The name of the program is ABAQUS.
Occasionally - not always (!) - the computation comes to
a grinding halt with error 142:
ABAQUS Error: The executable C:\ABAQUS\6.6-3\exec\standard.exe
aborted with system error code 142.
A discussion within an ABAQUS mailing list come up with:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms681382(VS.85).aspx
which indicates that error code 142 is associated with a drive problem
(ERROR_BUSY_DRIVE). Perhaps this will help you debug things.
The error is not listed in the Windows event viewer. Nonetheless,
I typed the EventID in the appropriate box on www.eventid.net and got:
...
Details Comments and links for event id 142 from source ESE97
which carries us to:
Event ID: 142
Source ESE97
Type Error
Description The database disk is full.
Things to understand When can a disk become full?
Comments Ionut Marin (Last update 11/30/2003):
As per Microsoft: "This behavior can occur if there is not enough free space
on the drive to create the Refer.mdb file". See M258301 to fix this problem.
The direct link to M258301 is for cash only. But I did find
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/258301/en-us
XADM: How to Run Isinteg -t When Isinteg Fails Because of Lack of Disk Space
In this context also:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182081/EN-US/
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125144(EXCHG.80).aspx
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B301460&x=15&y=5
Unfortunately, I'm too dumb to get it. I wouldn't know that I am
using a program 'Microsoft Exchange'. Also, neither Refer.mdb nor
isinteg.exe could be located in my number cruncher.
Is anyone able to throw light on how to quench this error ? It
would be marvellous if someone could explain to a PC dummy what
to do. I am using Win XP Professional with Service Pack 2 installed.
The problem did persist when running a simulation on another, almost
completely void drive on the same PC.
Thanks for any advice !

Looking for assistance using MyLogon for XP
Hi
A while ago, I posted a question and was given a suggestion to use a
product called MyLogon, which would allow my 5 XP Home workstations to
access a server of sorts--actually all machines are/would be in a peer
to peer network where each client has its own sets of files stored on
this sort of file server.
Well, by the time I got to actually doing the work, the post was
purged and, naturally, I am not being able to get the process to work
properly.
I am able to validate a logon on the client machine but that is not
what I had originally wanted.
I have not seen a description of what is needed on the Server side to
allow Client access. I have set up a User Account with a password on
the server for each Client and then provided that User Name with
password on the corresponding Client. I have set up a folder for each
client in the Shared Folders on the Server.
When the client attempts to enter the network password, they are
advised that the server is found but the logon has failed.
The logon has failed but it is not because the password is incorrect--
I have entered/deleted/added etc to no avail.
Again, as I understand it, the user code/password is set up on the
client but I do not see details of what is needing to be done on the
server side.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks In Advance

Beginner's Question: Adding a 2nd Monitor to my XP System
Hello
I just got a new 22" monitor, which my Nvidia Quadro FX3000 is able
to drive without problems (I'm not a gamer - just regular office type
applications user).
Instead of eBaying my old 17" monitor, I thought maybe I can use it to
increase my monitor real estates. The FX3000 video card comes with two
DVI ports, so I hooked up the old screen to the second DVI port on the
FX3000, but everything just slowed down to a crawl, obviously the card
can't handle 2 monitors.
Do you think installing a second PCI video card would solve the
problem? I don't have any experience building systems so advice is
appreciated. Also, would I need to buy any special software for the
two video cards to work together?
Thanks. Tag: again xp2 sp3 Tag: 807540
