I have a brand new machine with XP home installed by the dealer. It is
legit, I have the CD and a sticker. I go to Wnidows update and it tells me
that I have a security update to install. When I try to install it it says
that it needs Windows Genuine Advantage (or something like that), so I click
on "install it". The message says it failed to install. I have tried
several manual methods to install it and get all sorts of wierd messages
(like you are trying to install a program that is older than the one that is
running). I am effectively blocked out of updating this copy of Windows.
Why? How do I fix this?

Try checking the validation of youre XP OS,go
to:http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/default.aspx?displaylang=en&sGuid=3f10ff3b-b828-47c0-a688-dc463e92a51f
And/or,go to tools from youre start menu, select:Register windows
