    - KB951748 Security Update Kills Network Connection again I do not have Zone Alarm installed, so any response to this post pointing to those updates will be wasting everyones time..... (again). When KB951748 is installed I lose web access to the Internet, but I can still connect to the router admin page. The router can ping out via it's admin page OK. Ping does not work from the PC command line. During my testing I removed all firewalls bar the Windows one and the firewall built into the router DG834 (set to allow all). Also note I have other PC's connected to the same router with the KB951748 patch installed, these PC's have no problems connecting. So I don't suspect the router. I have XP media edition running on an AMD x64 dual core processor. The XP is a 32 bit edition. Up to now I have been running without KB951748 installed, I thought things may have moved one with more updates being released in Aug 08. But no joy. Anyone have any ideas?     - SP3 and the Beethov9.wma file I have a Dell laptop which I keep curent with automatic updates. I recently posted here a problem I was having installing SP3 with a copy error coming up when it tried to load the Beethov9.wma file. If you try to skip file it comes up again later and the installation aborts. Lucky that it was able to use the restore point to back up to SP2. Response to my posting gave me several Microsoft KB's on SP3. None of which worked. Later I goggled on Beethov9.wma and got a number of postings about the same problem. One said he fixed the problem by changing ownership of C:/documents&Settings/allusers/documents folder. I checked this folder and was told I did not have access rights. I have full admin priviledges (only user). Tried to erase was told it was windows file and necessary for windows. Then per poster's instructions I booted in safe mode under Adminstrator and changds security access on the folder to Administrator and myself with full control. When I rebooted in normal mode to try update again I checked this folder and it was gone. SP3 installation worked perfectly. Task Manager CPU Usage 100% ...RAM need to free Okay I had a virus but after running Webroot Spysweeper, Avast anti-virus, XoftSpySE, Uniblue Registry clean and Booster 2 and Speed-up 3... I seem to be clean.... But my CPU usage (windows Task Manager) keeps spiking and my Internet Explorer 7 has one window pane that states that I am not conneced to the Internet notice (and is corrupted). Do I just need to free up RAM? System: XP Por Version 2002, Service Pack 2, Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4CPU 2.00 Ghz, Two slots 1.99 Ghz,768Mb of RAM So can you help? Please do not suggest SP3. I have roamed around and the consensus is that it is a disaster and (not on Microsoft site) causing a lot of hatred towards Redmond.... Customers feeling betrayed and angry at an upgrade that is less stable and causes a host of problems.... So I will wait on SP3 until the bugs are worked out. Funny you'd think - make it functional and then release but that's another way and not a question..... So if anyone can suggest what do re spiking and RAM. I basically use this computer for access online to Quickbooks so I could get rid of alot of old software but both hardrives less than 35% full..... Thanks, in advance, for any advice.     - tried everything to get Icon Image back - no luck!! The favorites favicon.ico has changed to the default Internet Explorer "E" icon. I copyied the favicon.ico from the web site, into a new folder "My Icons" and then tried to change by browsing to the folder -- no luck!? anyone know how to clean up this problem?     - Cannot see partitions more than 128Gb in Windows Professional XP S I've a legal copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 3. I recently bought a 320Gb Maxtor PATA HDD. My BIOS recognizes 320Gb, so Linux and Plan 9 Operating Systems, but for some extrange reason, Windows XP SP3, only 128Gb. I created EnableBigLba Key (It didn`t exist), DWORD, Value 1 in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters Rebooted the machine, but had no effect. When I open Administrative tools->Equipment Management->Disk Management I see always a 128Gb Disk instead the real, 320 Gb. The same with Partition Magic and other partitioning tools. My XP is in Spanish. First I installed XP, then upgraded to SP1, later upgraded to SP2 and finally upgraded to SP3. I upgraded toSP3 because with SP2 I had the same problem eith the HDD, and I thougt taht it would be solved upgrading patches. What can I do to see complete 320Gb HDD? Thanks in advance.     - Managing mouse behavior This is probably a stupid question with an obvious answer. I will not object to answers which begin with "Listen, moron." I have an HP Pavilion dv6110us laptop with a Synaptics touchpad V 6.3. The computer runs XP Media Center Edition, Version 5.1. The default behavior of the "mouse" pointer seems to be to select and open if I hover over a dialog box or link for more than a little while. How do I disable this? I don't want the computer to go off and do stuff just because I have the cursor pointed at something. Further, I have the pointer set to go to the default position when a dialog box is opened and I certainly don't want all dialog boxes to go off and do the default. What's the point of a dialog box in that case? While I could obviously choose not to send the pointer to the default response, that seems unnecessarily global as a solution. I did handle this behavior on W 98 years ago but I don't seem to be able to find it on this XP Media Center Edition installation. My preference would be for the link/icon,shortcut/filename in Windows Explorer to be: 1. Highlight if the pointer hovers over it or passes over it 2. Select programs, files and shortcuts with a single click, open with a double click 3. Open web links with a single click This was noted with Service Pack 2. I have just let Windows Update put SP3 on the computer. While I have not checked, I don't think that will change the bahavior. I also have a Dell Dimension 7300 desktop running XP Pro, SP2, on which the pointer behaves the way I want it to.     - Application Error in three of four users I have a Windows Media Center machine with three users (plus the "Administrator") The "Administrator" user, reached only by Ctrl-Alt-Del at the login screen, seems to work fine. When we login to any of the users, we get the "Application Error - The instruction referenced at location could not be "read"" Obviously not verbatim, but this does not occur in the Administrator account. A virus was removed, which I believe the remnants result in the App Error. I can get into the registry through the Administrator, but cannot with the users. I believe there is a reference in the registry that, when removed, will clear up this error. The errors seem to occur as programs are loaded at startup.     - 64bit Version of Vista......What are some reasons why I would want to install this? Hello, I'm trying to figure out why I might want to install the 64 bit version of Vista. What would it give me? Ok, I'd be able to access more than 4gig of RAM (which my motherboard doesn't support). Is it more solid and stable? Would it be faster than the 32bit version? And where would I get the 64bit version? Is it on the same DVD as my 32bit version of Vista? Could someone convince me why I should care about a 64bit operating system?     - Discoloration of my monitor's screen?!? We had a severe thunderstorm pass overhead today! There was a lightning bolt that struck very close to my house. The T.V. and the computer' screens were both affected, the screens went to a multi-colored tye-dyed color. There was no power outage and they are both on surge protectors; but I can't get my computer screen to reset. I hope it (the lightning) didn't screw up my screen.     - can anyone help I bought a computer eight months ago, from a proper computer shop. 2 weeks after I bought it it started to freeze and then crash, I could get it back to working order again, but then it would get worse and I would not be able to get it started again, I took it back to the dealer and he ran tests and programmes though it, over the course of time after 8 visits back to him, he took the whole computer back to default, still as always I had the same problem, after 6 or 7 seven days it would start to freeze and then crash and after 10 ten days I could never get it going again, the last time I took it back, he SAID he put a new motherboard in it!!!     - 3 GB switch Hi all, Just a quick question. I have XP home with SP3 and I'm trying to apply the /3GB switch. I entered the correct lines in the boot.ini file using the system/advance/start up recovery settings/edit. I then saved the file and rebooted. After it re-booted I was told to look under the systems general tab and make sure it said "physical address extension". But it does not. I've rechecked the boot file and its typed exactly like I was instructed to type. Does anyone know what I did wrong? Does Home edition allow the /3GB switch?     - Internet Explorer 7 - Problem Loading Videos I just recently purchased a new laptop that came with Windows Vista installed. The OS on my old computer was Windows XP and, if I recall correctly, had Internet Explorer Upgraded to 7.0 along with the latest version of Firefox. Both Browsers were able to load and play videos off of yourtube and google/video just fine. Now, with Windows Vista I'm unable to view any type of video while browsing. I thought it might have to do with Adobe Flash Player, but the website redirects me to the following link everytime I attempt to download the program. So, I'm assuming I need to somehow adjust my browser from 64bit to 32? I've tried searching through my browsers settings but just have no idea what to look for. I'm really lost will all of this.     - Office 2003 Word and Outlook "shut down" error Help! I downloaded an Adobe update and since that point I'm having problem with Word and Outlook. It doesn't matter which of them I'm using they will "shut down" and throw out what I'm doing. This is the error message I get "Microsoft Office Word encountered a problem and needs to close.     - XP Home Packard Bell laptop, total hard drive failure, no Windows XP Home CD but valid licence key on back of pc, what can I do? Dear Group, A friend has asked me to fix his laptop, the hard drive has failed completely. I've tried it in other pc's and none even recognise that it's connected in the BIOS. Purchased a replacement hard drive, installed it, and now I'm stuck. It had Windows XP Home, still has the licence key sticker on reverse. He doesn't have the CD because he thinks he was supposed to burn a disc but "never got round to it". What can I do? I've sent Packardbell Support an email asking what they recommend, so far just an automated reply saying they will get back to me. My brother has a fujitsu siemens XP Home cd, I am going to try using that to install, but I'm guessing their will be an error or something since it's not Packard Bell, is that the case or will this work? Do I need to find someone near me with a Packard Bell XP Home cd? Can I download this version of Windows XP Home from the internet and install using the valid key on reverse of laptop?     - MS Calculator is interferring with text writing Something very odd has recently occured when I attempt to write text in email, newsnet and other venues - when certain keyboard letters (p,e, etc) are struck up pops Calculator - additionally when an apostrophe is struck, words jump a line and letters are transposed.     - Application to prevent idle logout I am running XP in a University environment. When I leave the office (to work in a lab) the machine logs out after about half an hour. This is annoying because it takes 5 minutes to log back in. Is there some way I can prevent the log out? But after the second installation, I couldn't find any of my documents. I'm so confused because the hard disk space indicates that they are there but I've tried windows and Dos search. Please help.     - NetWare has disabled the Welcome Screen and Fast User RE: Windows XP Media Center Hello Out There, I am not sure what to do next... After I deleted some unused user accounts, I received the following msg - "Client Services for NetWare has disabled the Welcome Screen and Fast User Switching. To restore these features you must uninstall Client Services for NetWare." I followed the directions to uninstall (CSNW), but when I got to the General tab, the connection shows an option to Uninstall - "Client for Microsoft Networks". There is NO option named "Client Services for Netware". This is most confusing. QUESTION: Is Client Services for NetWare and Client for Microsoft Networks the same?     - DOES XP Pro require start-up discs be made? I just thought about the prior habit of creating a Start-Up disk, but don't recall having to do it with XP Pro (in 2006 - new computer system).     - rdp connection problem for some reason , ever since install of xp pro sp2 on this old pc, no one can connect to the pc with rdp even within the local area network. It does respond to ping, as well as allows internet access to files in teh network. The terminal services were on manual but I changed to auto . it is running., I made sure the firewall setting is correct. there services section for terminal services looks normal to me. I also tried updating to sp and all the latest security patches. naturally it did not make any differences as I expected what can to fix the problem without re-install of the entire xp pro??     - Resetting XP Pro Ok, am sort of jumping the gun, but it goes like this: I bought an used Dell, "as-is" with the XP Pro certificate and key number on the side of the machine. It was as is cause in this sale there was no video card in the machine, so I risked the few bucks, took the machine and now risked another $7 on eBay for a regular PCI video card. Then I realized, that even if this works, what if there was a password on the machine, forgot to ask. So if there is I have one question: Is there a way to "reset" XP on that machine? In other words even if there is a password, do something so it goes back to the point where it's just at the point the day the machine was bought, with XP installed? Again, jumping the gun since not even sure it works till the video card gets here.     - Restoring from backup My notebook was on its last legs with problems performing most functions. I managed to run a complete backup using MS Backup under System Tools, and selecting "My Documents and Settings' onto an external hard drive. This created a .BKF file. Now I need to restore the data, and most specifically my Outlook data and emails. My new notebook runs Vista and I couldn't find a way to restore directly to that computer. So I used the RESTORE function of MS Backup to restore all data to a separate bare bones XP desktop machine.     - After Upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro, Windows Won't Boot This is a somewhat lengthy description of my problem, but here goes... I had XP Home SP3 installed on my desktop computer. I wanted to upgrade it to XP Pro. I inserted the XP Pro disc and the setup program started from within Windows, only to find that it wouldn't upgrade because the current version of Windows (Home with SP3) was newer than the version of Windows on the disc (Pro with SP2). So I slipstreamed SP3 into the Pro SP2 disc, using the method described here: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/xpsp3_slipstream.asp . That seemed to work, because when I entered setup again from Windows the new version error didn't appear, and I was able to proceed with the upgrade. I did (without entering the product key yet), and the setup routine continued normally, restarting periodically and installing files. After one of the restarts, the Windows boot screen appeared as it had been doing, but shortly after a blue screen appeared and the computer restarted. The "Windows didn't start successfully screen appeared," and I tried to start Windows normally again, but the blue screen came up again. Then I tried the last know good configuration option, and the blue screen still came up. Finally I tried Safe Mode, and through that the computer did boot into Windows. It looks like the upgrade worked, since the Windows version now reads Windows XP Professional, but I couldn't find what might be stopping Windows from booting. What could be the problem? It doesn't matter if he adds a password or not. If he doesn't add a password, it still asks for one. If he adds a password and then tries to enter that password to login, it doesn't accept it.     - Help with SP3 update I have a new laptop. While doing some surfing I noted that a windows update was downloading. Not surprising since I have automatic updates set and install. Late I noted that downloaded update had not installed so looked at it. Saw it was a large one for SP# and required my accepting license. So I said accept. Installation started and seemed to go smoothly until I was installing new files and it got a read error on a MDI file for Beethoven's Nineth Symphony. Since I did not think I needed it I said skip file and continue. It went on until it hit a wmi file again for Ninth symphony that is when it aborted somehow when I tried to skip it. The KB936929 was uninstalled. When I tried to downloaded from scratch I was told it was already loaded ready to be installed. Since I think the download has a problem want to uninstalled/redownload. Tried to get it off MS download page but all I got was the file for a network. Said for a single PC go to windows Update but do not know how to get there. Can One of you : a. tell me how to remove the stored KB936929 file so I can download it again or b.     - problems using virtual hard disks (VHD) with XP, VHDMount I installed the latest version of Virtual Server w/VHDMount, and the "take 2" registry Ben Armstrong posted on his blog for quickly mounting VHD files (see http://blogs.msdn.com/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2007/06/20/double-clicking-on-a-vhd-to-mount-it-take-2.aspx or http://blogs.msdn.com/virtual_pc_guy/search.aspx?q=vhd&p=1 for all his VHDMount articles) and am having a lot of issues.... I am hoping someone will be able to point out something obvious I did wrong so I can get this to work... I tried created a VHD image using Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (I have tried both dynamic and fixed-size) and partitioned/formatted them with NTFS. I right-clicked on the VHD file and selected "plug in". NOTE: what I describe happens whether I use the right-click options, or from the command prompt use VHDMount.exe /p VHDFileName and VHDMount.exe /u /c VHDFileName The first thing strange is the drive did not appear in My Computer so I opened Computer Management > Disk Management and see the drive (shows up as Disk 6, I have a media card reader that takes up 2-5) is there but offline/disabled. When I right-click it for Properties, I can enable it from the dropdown. Or I can goto Device Manager > Disk drives and it is listed with a red X, and I can right-click and enable it. At this point it gets a drive letter. I never had any issue with the driver - although just to be sure I tried following the instructions to update the driver and pointed it to the .inf files in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual Server\Vhdmount\ (vhdbus.inf and vhdstor.inf) but Windows says these are not drivers for the device. It seems to already have a working driver for this. In any case, once I enable the drive, I get a drive letter and can then copy files to the partition... sometimes. I have a few large folders with many files (almost 4 GB, ~14,000 files) and when I try copying the files with Explorer, it starts to work, but then I get an error saying Windows cannot complete the task. So I have to use my file compare utility (Beyond Compare 2.x). Sometimes it works (sort of) if there aren't too many files or the file directory structure isn't too deep. But then when I am done, I don't seem to be able to unmount the drive. I right click on the VHD file and select Unplug (commit changes) and nothing happens - the drive letter still appears in My Computer and Disk Management. It is only when I disable the drive in Disk Management or Device Manager that I hear the chime (the sound you hear when you Safely Remove Hardware) and the drive letter goes away. Then if I try to re-enable, Windows asks me to reboot (really inconvenient), and usually the system gets unstable. But usually I don't get that far - usually Beyond Compare locks up 1/3 or 1/2 of the way through copying the files. At this point Windows gets very unstable, to where it is totally unresponsive except for my being able to move the mouse pointer. I am unable to kill Beyond Compare or Explorer in Task Manager, open any Windows in Explorer, or shut down the PC without killing the power, let alone Unplug the VHD to commit the changes. After much frustration I gave up and tried a 3rd party program (WinImage.com) but it doesn't seem to work with VHD files except for letting you read & copy files from NTFS-formmated volumes (no write). Supposedly it supports writing to FAT32 volumes, but I can't even get it to open a FAT32-formatted VHD file, it thinks it's unformatted. And it doesn't support mounting VHD files to a drive letter, you have to use its interface, so I can't use Beyond Compare or other utility with it. I have seen people posting how VHDMount works so great for them, I am wondering if there is anything obvious I am doing wrong, or if it has to do with my antivirus (McAfee's AOL edition), which does not seem to allow me to make VHD files "exempt" from virus scanning.     - removal partial install from windows 98 se Here's the problem: The secretary where I work tried to install windows XP sp1 into a windows 98 se machine. The computer has a 40GB hard drive and the startup installation screen lets me choose the OS that I need within 15 seconds. The XP is a partial install and needs to be finished. I have the disk. However I do not think that the computer will handle the XP without causing something to go wrong. I need toi have to the partial install removed so that others can use the terminal. My Windows defender stopped installing updates after I uses System
Restore. I uninstalled it and re-installed it (from exactly the same
download as it happens, I save all program downloads in case I need them
again) and the problem went away. There's not much to lose by doing a
re-install.
