    - Problem editing Registry Win XP Professional (SP3) - using administrator account Running: Avast antivirus ZoneAlarm free Firewall Spy Bot Search & Destroy (without Tea-timer add-on). Last year, I installed a PCMCIA card reader. My first attempt to install the hardware failed and produced an error message that the device "might not work properly". Fortunately, a subsequent installation succeeded. However, the initial failure left the following residual entries in the Registry: HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\PCMCIA\MTD-0002\1 and at HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\PCMCIA\MTD-0002\1 (Default) REG_SZ (value not set) Capabilities REG_DWORD 0x00000014 (20) CompatibleIDs REG_MULTISZ ConfligFlags REG_DWORD 0x00000040 (64) DeviceDesc REG_SZ PCMCIA MTD-0002 HardwareID REG_MULTI_SZ PCMCIA\MTD-0002 PCMCIA\MTD-0002 Device Manager does not show an MTD-0002 device, so I cannot uninstall or delete all references to this hardware via Device Manger. I attempted to remove these entries from the Registry and received an error message; "Error Deleting Key, Cannot Delete 1; Error while deleting key." The Registry also includes references to the another non-existent device. HKLM\SYSTEM\Controlset001\Enum\USB\Vid_0000&Pid_0001\[Long List of numbers] and HKLM\SYSTEM\Controlset003\Enum\USB\Vid_0000&Pid_0001\[Long List of numbers] CompatibleIds REG_MULTI_SZ USB\UNKNOWN LocationInformation USB Device My attempt to delete these entries produced the same error message.     - Win XP won't boot - Locked from Recov Console Hello all. My problems first started when I restarted and my computer said C:/windows/system32/config/system is missing or corrupt and it wouldn't load up. I Went to recovery console and renamed all of them to .bak and moved them to a tmp folder, then I went to the repair folder and copied those to the config folder. I Rebooted and got the "Your computer failed to start successfully blah blah" and get safe mode, last good config (doesn't work) and normal. I go to normal and get the win xp loading screen but after that it just stays black. If I try any safe mode options, it stays hanging in agp40.sys. After that, I try going to recovery console again and my password isn't recognized! It used to be blank and now it doesn't work. I tried the offline nt password recover method but when it says it loads the SAM and Sofyware and System, I go to edit them but then it gives me with "ERROR: SAM hive not loaded!" or "Software hive not loaded and that is where recovery console settings are..." Now I'm stuck, my laptop won't load at all, and I can't access the recovery console! I heard that this problem might be fixed in an SP1 version, but I only have a regular windows xp recovery console cd, is that the problem? If I slipstream sp1+ to it will it be fixed?     - Reinstalling Windows XP Home Edition I need to reinstall Windows XP on my mother's computer. However, she cannot find her disk. Is it true that I can use my Windows XP disk, and just enter her code?? Also, what do I do when I try to reinstall windows and I get a message saying that my product code is invalid?     - Windows explorer taking up 100% CPU cycles For some reason when I play a DVD, windows explorer goes up to 100% every 20 seconds and it makes watching the DVD impossible because of stuttering. I scanned the PC for malware, viruses, and trojans and it came up negative. The hard drive is also defragged. I uninstalled the anti-virus and killed every unnecesary process and it didn't help.     - Missing items after malware, virus and Trojans. Inadvertantly, I picked up the above and had to remove them. I believe that I now have them gone (I think). The problems are that now I have no "C:\" in the My computer. Also, when I try to access the Display control panel I get the message that the system administrator has diabled the display control panel. Also, the task manager has been similarly diabled. I have a HP Pavillion dv6000 and I have removed the Vongo program from my Administrator priveleged log in, my problem is that my other user, without admin priveleges has to camp on the cancel button when they log in to their account to kep Vongo from loading.     - Numpad 4 brings Windows Explorer window to foreground This is very strange. If I have a Windows Explorer window open, whatever application I'm using, hitting the numpad 4 (with NumLock on) key brings that Windows Explorer window to the foreground. The other 4 key works normally. The other numpad keys work normally. If there are no Windows Explorer windows open, the numpad 4 key works normally. Anyone seen this? Anyone know a solution?     - Desktop Theme not sticking I have a windows XP machine with Service pack 2 installed. I modified the registry settings to allow the luna start menu theme to display on the taskbar and start menu properties dialog. I modified the theme slightly. When I shut down the computer and re-boot it comes back in a modified windows classic gray theme with the XP start menu (two columns in gray) I can change the theme back using the display properties dialog after the machine boots up, but the choice does not save. Does anyone have any idea what settings i have to modify to save the theme settings with my account so that it loads up the next time the pc is started ?     - Windows Update Not Installing? On 2 laptops today, SP3 XP Home, each downloaded 16 updates but all 16 failed to install. Repeating doesn't repeat the downloads (since I guess it keeps them somewhere) but reproduces the failure instantly. Something new today?     - Auto Closedown of Outlook When I select "Turn Off", Win XP shuts down any program that happens to be running (with prompts to save any open files). This is convenient, but the exception is Outlook - if it's open, I am prompted to close it. Is this normal, or is there a setting I can alter?     - HELP - Screen Display Problem This morning, for some unknown reason, it looks like the display on my monitor has shifted slightly to the right. If I'm on full screen display: the X on the top right corner is not visible; if there is a slider bar on the right side, it's not visible either. I tied all available options for display resolution and font size, but nothing. In order to see it all, I have to redice the screen size, move it so the top left corner and expand it from the bottom right corner until it's as full as the display.     - Windows Update Install I'm running XP Pro SP3. When I open IE (I usually use SeaMonkey for browsing) and go to the Windows Update page it says it needs to install software. I select the Custom option but it still wants to install Windows Genuine Advantage, which, if I recall, is not a good thing. (I used to use WindizUpdate but that's no longer available.) Should I let it install the WGA and then uninstall it later, or leave it on? Or, better yet, is there another option to get the necessary updates? Thanks for any help.     - Hidden device "Beep" Some time ago togglekeys stopped beeping when I pressed "Caps Lock". My own programs, calling the "Beep" function stopped beeping. These beeps had been coming from the system speaker (my soundcard and PC speakers are woring pefectly, thank you, I'm listening to Max Bruch as I type). The speaker that beeps when you turn on the PC with bad memory installed. The little one inside the case. The one that *still* beeps if you annoy the BIOS program... I just found the hidden, non-plug and play device "beep" is disabled. I tried to enable it: "Windows was not able to enable this device" No Google hits on: beep "Windows was not able to enable this device So, should I try the standard technique for such devices?     - Where to download dotnet 3.0 SP1 full package ? Hello. We have some secured PCs that are not connected to the internet. I have downloaded the dotnetfx 3.0 and installed in these PCs quite some time ago, and am thinking of downloading the dotnetfx 3.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to update those machines. Unfortunately, all that I can get is that "dotnetfx30sp1setup.exe" file that requires PCs to be connected to the internet to get the SP1.     - Missing Automatic Updates tab in System Properties As the subject line states, I have a PC running Windows XP SP2 that does not have an "Automatic Updates" tab in the "System Properties" window displayed when Right-Clicking on "My Computer" and selecting the "Properties" from the context menu. Same result running the System applet from the Control Panel. I have reviewed Google hits regarding running REGSVR32 to re-register several update dll's and the control panel applets. I have scanned the system for viruses, malware, and rootkits. Nothing untoward was detected. Several Microsoft KB's reference this and address by way of Group Policy settings and such. System is not a domain PC. Noting has restored this tabbed entry in the System Properties. Before I reinstall the OS, are there any additional ideas to try? Thanks in advance.     - Strange Alphabetical Format Appeared in My Documents Last week, out of the blue, when I opened up My Documents to save a doc, it appeared with a alphabetical heading in a list format. A had all my folders/docs starting with "A," and on down the alphabet. I nearly flipped out. In all my years on the computer that has never appeared. It was nearly arranged but not from anything I did. I shut down, opened up again, ran everything I could think of include One Care, and Penicillin's free scan - nothing at all showed up.     - Wireless Network Showing up as Wired I installed a Belkin USB network adapter on my Dell. It all worked fine. Now the connection shows up as Local Area Network 6. There are no options for nothing wireless. I chose to have windows manage the network when I installed the drivers. I just want to be able to choose my home network and not my neighbors.     - Can SEND but Cannot RECEIVE in Outlook Express and Outlook I have three email addresses I use. They are all located on a Windows Server 2003 running SMTP and POP3 (NOT Exchange). All three accounts are identical in their setup.... use WPA and require authentication. I can send/receive fine from one account. The other two will send but not receive and there is no error message. This is true for both Outlook Express that came with XP and for Outlook 2000 which is my primary email client. If I set the accounts up an another box in my office, they send/receive fine. It seems to be just my XP notebook (SP2) that will not pick up mail from two of the three accounts. I have removed/reinstalled SMTP and POP3 on the Server. I had run ipconfig /flushdns multiple times on my XP notebook. I have removed and add the accounts multiple times in both Outlook and Outlook Express. Nothing. Will send find but will not pick up message showing in the POP3 mailboxes on the server from this machine.     - Login password I would like to turn OFF the password requirement when booting up my computer, but in the "User Accounts" dialogue box, the checkbox "Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete" is grayed out (and checked). This computer was set up in a domain; I used it in my former job, and the IT person set it up to work on that company's network.     - Lost use of the Alt-w shortcut Hi, I recently lost use of the Alt-w shortcut. The problem happens (or rather, nothing happens) in office applications and in other windows applications. It is not a keyboard failure; I use a laptop and I have the same problem with the laptop's keyboard and with an external one. The problem went away, but came it back a few days later.     - Disk Defragmentor could not start We get this message when run normally, and in Safe Mode. We have done the System File Checker, and have searched using Yahoo without success. We just removed the trojan that installs as a video codec, regained control of the machine, rans some updates, deleted temp files and were looking for a defrag to finish.     - XP won't boot I am running XP on an Acer Aspire ASE-360 desktop. I can only boot up in Safe Mode. When I try to boot normally, it will go through the XP startup screen and then the screen blanks for a second as normal. The green "acer" screen appears and it freezes there. The only way to go anywhere from there is to power down with the power button and start the boot process again. I've tried all the steps in the Help files with the exception of reloading Windows. I don't have a Windows XP disk, just the recovery CD's made after I purchased the computer.     - Fax service: Stopping... deleted... dead. I was having problems with the Fax Console, which I traced to the Fax Service being in "stopping" state (for days; I'm sure glad the brakes on my car are better than that). So I thought "Right! I'll stop you!" and I promptly uninstalled the "Fax Services" in add/remove programs. Then I tried to add it back in, and it couldn't find the files. I could find them, but every time I found a file, it just said it couldn't find it (where I'd just SEEN it). Then I noticed that on each attempt, it was stopping at a different file. So I kept adding "Fax Services". About 40 times in all. Then it reached "Configuring Fax Services" and ended with no errors. That's where I am now. No Fax Service, "Fax Services" in Add/Remove programs unchecked. I can check it till I'm blue in the face, and it completes with no errors, but no progress either.     - Is It Windows, PaperPort 11, Or Me? I have a a problem similar to, but not quite the same as, one bugging Dan Reardon on this site recently. My Epson 2450 scanner has been working fine for over a year but for other reasons I had to re-install Win XP Home and then all peripherals and applications. Now I cannot persuade Paperport 11 to recognise the scanner, even though it (the scanner) works fine with Epsonâ??s own â??Smart Panelâ?? and also from within Paint Shop Pro XI. It is connected to the PC by Firewire. When I first launch Paperport, I get a message that â??the default scanner is not attachedâ??, even though it is. If I run Paperport's scanner wizard I am offered 2 scanner options â?? one is â??TWAIN: EPSON TWAIN 5â??, the other is â??WIA: EPSON Perfection 2450 #2â??. (The #2 might be a result of having tried to remove and reinstal the scanner earlier in this saga). Is it fair to deduce from this that it must be seeing something, but for some reason not the hardware? The Paperport wizard claims it has â??successfully configured the scanner to work with Paperport 11â?? but that â??some tests were skippedâ??. This is not surprising, because all the tests are greyed out on the previous window and I cannot select any. I have removed Paperport and reinstalled but there is no change. Since I started this diagnosis, things have got worse. Now a third possible scanner has been added to the â??Selectâ?? list, labelled â??ISISâ??; however, all 3 are greyed out, so I cannot select one I have tried Nuance/Scansoft but they blame Epson's drivers. Since the kit works fine with other software, it surely can't be that simple. I wonder what would happen if I completely remove the scanner then re-install it with paperport running, but I'm not clear what steps I would have to take to achieve this, anyhow. I had them on the desktop and can not find the files when hooking the hard
drive up to a USB Cable and another computer. Any suggestions before I do a

Boot to safe mode with command prompt, and run the command:
CHKDSK /r
then
SFC /SCANNOW
