I have done all but System Recovery on my Computer. DOS seems to load fine
but Windows seems to hang on the title screen with the working bar under the
Windows XP Logo. It hangs on starting Safe Mode also. Occasionally it will
finally load in Safe mode but I have not been able to get it load normally
even after leaving it working all night. I am trying to save some files but
I had them on the desktop and can not find the files when hooking the hard
drive up to a USB Cable and another computer. Any suggestions before I do a
complete recovery?

Boot to safe mode with command prompt, and run the command:
CHKDSK /r
then
SFC /SCANNOW
