Some lower the brightness to save battery power, but inserting the
charger will let the brightness increase.

Usually the brightness and contrast are controlled by the Fn key and a F
key. Look at the blue icons on F10 and F11 and see if they are what you
need.

It could be a problem with the hardware too: bad LED's or whatever is
used to illuminate the background. Try a hardware newsgroup for better
suggestions and call the maunfacturer for support on the problem.

This doesn't sound to me like an XP problem.

Look on the keyboard for the Fn+ key combination that adjusts brightness.
If that doesn't have any effect, this is almost certainly not an OS issue,
it's extremely likely to be hardware.

Specifically, the display may be failing.

If so, this can't be fixed in software. Check your system warranty; if
it's out of warranty, find a service depot for an estimate, but be aware
that the display is possibly the single most expensive component on a
laptop. You might be better off replacing the laptop itself.

In the meantime, what most people do in this situation is attach an external
monitor.

My bios itself has the setting, but the setting is only for the 'on
battery' mode, don't think I saw the 'on power' but you might look in
yours. It don't cost much. When I bought mine, I had to change it from
50% to 100%. I want to drain the battery as much as possible. :-)
No not really, I just wanted 'on battery' to be bright due to my
eyesight. I'll take the battery going down faster.
