I had one of those notices (the little yellow shield icon in my
systray)when I booted up today saying that new updates were available
for my computer, and the icon's details said it was XP SP3, so I hit
the the "download" button and the icon disappeared and nothing
downloaded. I rebooted my computer to see if the icon would come back
and it didn't. The I went to the normal Microsoft Program Update site
and let it check my system for available updates and it only showed the
latest Windows Authentication update being available, nothing else.

What gives? Did it download some tiny .exe file for installation
somewhere that I don't know about, or what?

I didn't think SP3 was available on auto update just yet. If you install the
Genuine Authentication then SP3 may be available on the next check. I
checked mine earlier and it is ready to download but it's not on auto
update.

I believe you need to download Authentication update first, then you will
get the option to load it or read about before downloading sp3

Yes it is, although it's possible that they may be staggering it,
rather than making it available for every at the same time. It was
here.

Roger is correct. This is the sequence I had to follow to install SP3, which
took quite a while I might add. Take full backups first!!!

Don't worry. Automatic Updates calls a server and requests a download
slot. If the server is busy AU will close and try again anytime from a
few minutes to a couple of days.

I received the same advice regarding backup, also didn't disable AV WA is
the correct way to go.Message came back it would take 25 min. at my speed to
download and install SP3 Which it did flawlessly. So far no problems with
WinXp Home and programs installed. It will also state after reboot of
installation to return to WU to see if any more updates are available for
you.
