Can't Uncheck "Use DDE"
Using XP SP3, OE 6.00.2900.5512 (XPSP 080413-2105)
When I go to My Computer/tools/folder options/file types/(none) URL hyper
text transfer protocol/advanced/edit/use DDE, and uncheck the box I then
click OK/OK/close, but the box remains checked when I go back to it. The
apply button is grayed out. The same situation applies to URL hyper text
transfer protocol with privacy.
After installing SP3 I found that the only way to get the hyper links in
email messages in OE to work was to uncheck the DDE box. The problem is they
don't stay unchecked. Can someone help me correct this? Thanks.

After following all prescribed pre-downloading/installation requirements for

usb mass storage and hibernate
XP Home, SP3, external 120gb hdd, USB connected via pcmcia card in notebook

Same 120gb hdd device in Vista, when I hibernate, turns off. This is good.
But when I hibernate in XP the device light stays on, and I thus must

Please be very specific with directions to assure the device will turn 'off'

That is having device turn off in hibernate other than using "Safely Remove

Wndows XP SP3 Install
My install went as smooth as silk.
Easiest Microsoft install of a major piece of software I've ever made.
The download was only 69 MB since I visit the MS Windows Upgrade site every
day and keep right up to date.
My computer, a Dell XPS laptop, is pretty loaded with programs.
All run perfectly to date -- even some of the oddball third party stuff.
I didn't turn off Norton Internet Security 2008 during the install. It's
also right up to date.
Box runs even smoother, faster and crisper now...
Excellent job by Microsoft...
Kudos.
My Windows Live Mail install also went off smoothly without a hitch.

I reinstalled XP Home and then installed XP2 and then XP3 on my computer. I
then customized the settings for the Taskbar & System Tray (such as: use

When I restart my computer, it does not remember some of these settings -

Corrupted OS

-Currently upgraded home with fiber optics and installed net cards in all

-Installed a net card in wife's computer. When I turned on the computer it
tried to identify the new hardware and also upgrade to IE-7 at the same time.
Well it locked up. So I turned it off and restarted it.
-The computer now tries to load Me and states there are missing files.
-Tried using the XP upgrade disk to correct corrupted files or re-install

open the upgrade XP OS program, and request that a Me CD be inserted before
proceeding. Well I have trashed these Me disks a long time ago.

Minimized Program Icons Gone on Taskbar
Hi,
this happened now the second time to me. The first time it happened on
my mother's latptop, which is a WinXPHome/SP2. The second time it
happened today on my computer which is a WinXPPro/SP2.
I had some program crash (today it was UT2004) and after logging out and
back in the part of the taskbar, which shows the minimized windows has
disappeared. All else is still there (Quickstart, Virtual Desktops,
Search, Trayicons, etc.) I tried removing any from the taskbar and
adding the stuff back, still no luck. I did not install any new software
these days, but had Adobe update to current AcrobatReader. I am very
well secured.
There is a KB article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;139727 which
describes the same problem, as it seems, but I do not have any Xerox
software installed. Since this was a startup-folder entry and some "Make
it easier" type of software, I assumed, that it may be, that Adobe uses
the same software for the AcrobatReader Quickstart utility, they placed
into my startup-folder. Hence I removed it. No luck either.
I found no solution on the web. I tried removing the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Explorer\StuckRects2 key.
I checked for Friends Greetings Sacm as outlined in a post from 2002
here: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/t1036987252
I do not want to reinstall Windows. That is not a solution. I have
collected and applied just too many custom tweaks over the years, not to
talk about all the stuff written to the registry over the years.
Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you.

svchost problem
Hi,
I have a serious problem with my laptop. Recently it has become really slow
and the other day it will not show my profile. It boots up and lets me logon
but it then comes up with a svchost.exe errpr and an explorer.exe error. I
have tried to repair windows with my installation disk but the windows
installation does not appear in the list and it only allows me to install a
new copy of xp.
I have also tried to expand the svchost.ex off the installation disk to
C:\windows\system32 folder but it says Access Is Denied. I have tried to also
open the document and settings folder but it says Access is denied.
Does anyone have any ideas on how i can solve this.

Windows XP and long flle names
I thought Windows XP could handle long file names, that is, in excess
of eighty characters. I use Windows XP Pro and whenever I try to
change (usually shorten) the name, or even delete a file of over
eighty characters, either by highlighting in Windows Explorer and
clicking the big red X for delete, or right-clicking on the file to
choose delete or rename, Windows Explorer gives me an error message
which says Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and will shut
down, then closes. Any idea why this is? Seems to me I should be able
to work with these long files names. Most of them are usually .mp3
files which after downloading have more information than I want, like
artist, album, track number, year it was recorded, name of the
track...mp3, all of which makes up for a file name I can't work with. I do have
a program that allows me to work with the audio files but I'd like to know why
XP is crashing whenever I try to access a file with a long name. Also, it would
be easier doing it through Windows Explorer if I could. Makes no sense to me.
Thanks for any ideas. Tag: Where is my second Cpu? Tag: 807939
Got two copies of WinXP on my computer.
In trying to deal with a backdoor on my computer I have ended up with two
copies of Windows, each on different drives.
The original set up was that a first HDD was partitioned into C and D, with
WinXP Pro on C.
A second HDD was partitioned into K and L.
Backups of C were on the second HDD on K.
The computer was infected by a backdoor. I was advised to reformat and
reinstall Windows on C. The computer was supplied by a firm called Evesham,
now defunct, and the disk they supplied seems to be some kind of recovery
disk with no instructions for its use, not a proper Windows install disk.
I ran this Evesham disk, and what it ended up with was Windows on C, and
also another copy Windows on K.
Now during the boot sequence a window asks me to select which operating
system I want to start,
Windows XP Professional
Windows XP Professional.
If I choose the former I am into the first HDD, if I choose the latter I am
into the second HDD.
The first HDD has C marked as System, and K marked as Boot (shown in Disk
Management).
On the second HDD, C is marked System, K marked Active, nothing marked Boot.
The Evesham disk when run gives me no options, such as 'To delete the
selected partition press D' as you get with a proper Windows installation
disk.
What can I do? Oh do please help me if you can. I have backups of important
data burned onto disks, and am prepared to loose data if needed.

Sharing Files Between Home Vista and Home Windows XP?
I just bought a new Windows Vista Home Edition, and we already have a
Windows Home WIndows XP.
Both are on the same Linksys router, the old Windows XP's IP address
is 192.168.1.100 and the new Vista's is 192.168.1.102
I can ping the old Windows XP (at ...100) from the new Windows Vista
(...102), but not vice versa.
They both belong to the workgroup "WORKGROUP".
All I want to do is share files between these two home computers on
the same LAN. The Windows XP cannot find the Windows Vista computer
through Windows Explorer, but Windows Vista at least asks for a login
and password when I try to view files on Windows XP via \
\192.168.1.100\c$
Further, when I enable the Guest account on Windows XP, Windows Vista
says it cannot even find the Windows XP computer at all.
To summarize:
How do I share files between two home computers, one is Windows XP,
the other Windows Vista?
Thanks. Tag: Where is my second Cpu? Tag: 807929

Is there any way to
1. To identify what is going in the background while it is booting?
2. system restore from cmd prompt(recovery console)?
3.change the ctrl alt del login screen to normal xp login screen without

4. Is there any connection between ctrl+alt+del login with rundll exe?

XP Home cleanup: delete uninstall directories after installing SP3 ?
Hello,
I originally had XP Home SP1 OEM (english) with a new PC several years ago.
Since then I installed all updates, fixes, service packs etc.
Now at SP3 level without any problems.
I noticed that all those years of updating the system resulted in lots of wasted
disk space due to a series of uninstall, hidden diretories under windows:
\$hf_mig$
\$MSI31Uninstall*
\$NtServicePackUninstall$*
\$NtUninstall*
All above directories total a whopping 1.41GB of disk space.
I also noticed some associated log files, even though wasted disk space is not as significant:
kb*.log
Q*.log
So, given that my system is currently working fine, and I don't want to uninstall anything,
can I safely "cleanup" my system by deleting all the above?
If not, is there some other way to accomplish the same thing, for example order a new CD at
SP3 level and run some "re-install/cleanup" procedure on top of my current installation?
Ideally, I would like my system to look as if it had been installed at the SP3 level from the start.
Thanks.

Diskeeper's Undelete & Xp Sp3
Is anyone having problems running Diskeeperâ??s Undelete package (build 127)

I think the problem may have something to do with the addition of Network

My SP3 results so far
Yesterday I backed my XPpro up using both image and clone. Went to
MicroSoft Updates and did their 'download and install'. I would rather
have downloaded just the SP3 file, naturally, to have it available for
a later possible update, but Microsoft prevents this, only offering
the huge 300M version for download alone. The process of downloading
and installing took nearly 40 minutes! My DSL is running at 2244Kbits
when I tested just now so it wasn't download speed, there was just a
LOT of moving and shakin to that SP3!. I was totally amazed when the
blamed thing rebooted and came up normally after all that disk
thrashing and Microsoft intrusiveness. I made a quick attempt to test
all my software (there's a lot) and, far as I could see it was all
working. Following the link
XP SP3 tech net forum:
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=2010&SiteID=17
that I got from this newsgroup I found many people having troubles
with SP3. One complained of Windows Updates no longer working. So I
tried that next and, sure enough it no longer worked. Then neither
FireFox or IE7 would connect to internet. After considerable thrashing
around I finally concluded that SP3 had changed something in my
ZoneAlarm firewall. Once ZA blocked one Generic Host Processor
'intrusion' then neither browser would work till ZA was turned off.
Setting the Generic Host Processor to 'Trusted' in ZA didn't help. But
in Firewall, Zones my network adaptor card (which is connected to my
DSL modem and thus the internet) was set to 'Internet'. I changed this
to 'Trusted' and things started working. Set back to 'Internet' -
things still worked, but only temporarily. Had to keep network card at
'Trusted' for system to work.
That's the part of the elephant I'm feeling so far. Tag: Where is my second Cpu? Tag: 807915

Process invisible to Process Explorer
I have the "USB Aquarium" from
http://www.dreamcheeky.com/index.php?pagename=product&pid=10
It starts automatically with an entry in HKLM/Run, and puts an icon in
the system tray. If you use this icon to Quit, then it stops.
When my wife uses fast-user-switching, it starts a copy of
"Aquarium.exe". When she logs off, this process gets terminated, but the
aquarium doesn't stop.
From Process Explorer, I cannot find what is keeping the aquarium
running, and the only way to stop it is to ask her to logon again, then
stop it from her system tray icon before logging off.
There are a couple of DLLs in the same directory as the aquarium.exe;
might one of these be causing the aquarium to keep going?
Or, is the device just sitting there, doing its "thing", until something
(another copy of aquarium.exe) comes along and instructs it to stop?
Next time this happens, I'll try launching my own aquarium.exe process,
to see if that can be used to stop it.

SP3 and Dlink Wireless NIC problem (partially solved)
I installed SP3 on a XP Pro computer using a Dlink DWL-G510B wireless NIC.
After the installation I got the following error message with every boot.
"AirGCFG.exe - Entry Point Not Found
the procedure entry point apsSearchInterface could not be located in the dynamic link library
wlanapi.dll"
It seems SP3 installs a new version wlanapi.dll that is not compatible with AirGCFG.exe.
The NIC works and wireless connects, just have the boot error message.
I tried to get an older version of wlanapi.dll, but could not find one in either the driver files
from Dlink or on the web.
I emailed Dlink, but no response yet.
Did find that AirGCFG.exe is the Dlink NIC monitoring program that loads as a TSR (but does not show
in MSCONFIG).
Windows Defender (Software Explorer) showed it and allowed me to disable it as a TSR.
Now I do not get the boot error message and the NIC still works.
Will post back if I get a reply from Dlink. Tag: Where is my second Cpu? Tag: 807866
Programs not installing
I installed windows defender on my computer, and when i tried to uninstall it
said i was missing a file, i tried to reinstall it to see if that would give
me the missing file, and now i get a box that keeps popping saying beginning
program installation, but it never happens the box closes and comes back over
and over and over, now when i try to install any other program it either
freezes and nothing happens or i get an error message saying another program
is trying to install and needs to finish first.
Anyone know how i can stop the first one?
Thanks

an icon in the task bar. The Icon is no longer there with this new edition.
Is there a way to put it there and have it stay there. I can go to my
programs - AVG free 8.0 - and click on AVG Free tray Icon and it will send
an icon to the task bar. But.....when I turn the computer back on the
Icon is gone. Thanks for any help

Files converted to txt files
I have a 5 year old Sony desktop running Windows XP. The computer has a
partitioned hard drive and the C drive filled up to near capacity. I have
been trying to take off or move programs, but none of the utilities work
except Windows Explorer. When I look for files such as cleanmgr they are in
their correct directories but appear as txt files.
I thought originally the files would not work because of lack of processing
capacity, but now I am wondering if this is a virus. Can anyone help? Tag: Where is my second Cpu? Tag: 807839
How do I change folder views - I get the search screen
Hello,
How can I change this in Windows XP: When I go into windows explorer (right
click on START) and click on a folder, the "search results" screen comes up.
Only if I right click on a folder can I select explore, then the folders
contense is shown. If I use the folders view on the left hand column, it
works correctly but this is annoying to use.
I've tried all sorts of things to fix this and nothing corrects it.

I update my system to XPP+SP3. Then I use the command "systeminfo" show my
machine's information. But it shows only one CPU in my Notebook. Where is my
second CPU?
What makes you think an update will have installed a 2nd cpu?

Your notebook? Laptop?
What is the make and model of your laptop?
Why are you 'expecting' more than one CPU?

If you have a dual core cpu
but device manager has only a single core CPU listed...
a dual core cpu is installed the same way any other device is handled...
simply opt to "update driver"
then select the proper dual core configuration from the list of devices.
I forgot the exact wording
but there should be a choice such as "multi-core processor"

Likely is that you don't have two processors. Likely is that you have a
dual core in ONE processor.
