Windows XP Media Center
Hello.
I recently bought a media center pc used from a friend of mine. The
computer originally had xp media center edition running on it. It now has a
fresh install of XP Professional on it. I want to do a system restore back
to media center xp; but it for some reason it won't let me. (says hit F10
during startup for system recovery, but hitting F10 does nothing). The
recovery partition is still there. Any ideas? Tag: Wallpaper rescales when "Show Desktop Icons" unchecked Tag: 802826
CPU running high
My cpu randomly begins to run high, sometimes at 100% for no apparent reason.
At least none that I can see. It causes extreme slowdown on my machine
sometimes causing webpages to take up to 7 minutes to open or close. There is
no "regular" time for this, it just happens even after i clean up, defrag,
etc. I have to sometimes shut down my PC by holding down the power button or
wait 10 minutes for the menu to open. Any tips on what could be causing this
or a way to stop it?? Tag: Wallpaper rescales when "Show Desktop Icons" unchecked Tag: 802815
HELP - Lost data after reinstalling XP
My laptop is a DELL Inspiron 6000. OS : XP Home edition.
During boot I got the error message : "No master boot sector found" or something similar.
After several attempts I decided to reinstall the OS (XP Pro, from an old CD, as Dell did
not give me a Windows CD), as I had done in the past on another PC, believing it would
keep my application programs and data. Unfortunately that did not happen, as i found
myself with a bare-bones OS and no trace whatsoever of other data on the HD.
Can I recover the old data ? I downloaded a couple of utilities but they are hard to
manage and no appreciable results were obtained.
Can someone please help ? I am in a terrible fix, as I use the laptop for my work. I had
all my invoices stored there, along with clients' data and emails, three-years-worth of
stuff.
Thanks in advance.

Freeze
My XP Home edition with SP2 on a Compaq Presario desktop will freeze on
occasion; sometimes during startup at the XP screen, sometimes on standby.
It's quite random, and rarely at the same exact spot. Pressing ctr-alt-del
does nothing. It's been suggested that the computer might be overheating, so
I cleaned the dust out of the case and made sure that all three fans are
operating, but it did not cure the hang/freeze problem. I also shut down
screen savers and auto standby functions, and disabled all unnecessary
startup programs/processes, to no avail. Any other ideas out there?

Neeed help with a "windows - sysytem error"...Thank you
Hello,
Hope someone can help me out.
I keep getting an error popping on the screen. It is a small gray box with a
red circle with an "x" in it. The title of it is; "Windows- System error"
and the error in the box is; "Insufficient system resources exist to
complete the API."
My PC specs are ass follow;
AMD X2 processor, 2 Gig of Ram, Nvidia graphic card and runs XP pro. Not
much installed on the PC, a couple of small programs for work, windows
office and I use Firefox extensively for work as well. BTW, I reinstalled
windows twice recently and I keep getting that error even after the fresh
install.
The main problem is that if I get the error while I am logged off the
system, I can't get back in, I have to shut the PC off manually to be able
to log back in. If I get the error while I am in windows, I can simply close
the error window and keep on doing what I am doing.
Thank you very much in advance. Tag: Wallpaper rescales when "Show Desktop Icons" unchecked Tag: 802806

Should I use KB909095 to fix hibernate problem
I have had two laptops now which have failed to hibernate properly because of
2Gb or more of RAM. The first is nearly four years old and I applied KB909095
to it and that fixed the problem. My latest laptop only a few months old has
4GB of RAM and is now suffering the same problem. I resisted applying
KB909095 because the EXEs in question appear to have been replaced by later
versions. However I know there are different services branches also, so not
sure whether one is really an update of the other.
Does anyone know if its safe to apply the hotfix now given the newer
versions of files already installed? I really would like to sort this out on
my new laptop as it fails to hibernate everytime I try at the moment after a
couple of hours using it.

Sound, Video, Game controllers (Drivers)
Hi guys,
I have a Dell Dimension 8200 running Windows XP Pro SP2 with a TBS Santa
Cruz Sound card. It is working perfectly until I bought and installed a
Logictech Orbit AF webcam. During installation, it screwed up my sound
drivers rendering my PC without sound.
When I checked the device manager, the device drivers have yellow exclamtion
marks on them and the device status have code 39. I have reinstalled the
latest driver for this sound card and reinstalled the drivers but XP won't
let me saying that it cannot find a driver better than I currently have.
To make matters worse, the Dell technician I called uninstalled the other
lines as well such as Audio codecs, video codecs, legacy, etc. None of my
restore points work.
I suspect that the registry has something to do with the new drivers not
being reinstalled. Can you guys suggest something to bring back the sound to
my PC along with the XP audio and video codecs short of reinstalling Windows
XP?

Windows update causes printer to stop working correctly
Fresh install of windows on a newly formatted hard-drive,
always results in this same thing: I install Windows XP Pro
on a newly formatted hard-drive, and attach the computer the
the network's printer using the [Printers and Faxes]
dialogbox. Everything (including printing) works fine before
I do any Windows updates.
Then I do all the windows updates (including SP2) and test
again, now, the print dialogbox, takes 45 seconds (instead
of about 1 second) to come up when the [print] menu item is
selected, and the print job takes 45 seconds (instead of
about 1 second) to begin printing after the [print] button
of the print dialogbox is pressed.
I have tried this same sequence over-and-over many times for
the last six weeks. I always start with a newly formatted
hard-drive and a fresh install of Windows XP Pro. What could
be causing this? Tag: Wallpaper rescales when "Show Desktop Icons" unchecked Tag: 802756
Notification area: right-click on an icon also brings up taskbar m
Hello,
I've had this bug for ages but sometimes, like now, I trawl the internet in
the hope of finding one solitary person who has the same problem .... as
always I've failed in my searches, so I'm trying here.
Essentially, the problem is, with some applications' icons in the
notification area, when I right-click on it to access its context menu,
sometimes the context menu also comes up for the windows taskbar. Almost as
if the cursor is partly 'mis-aiming' on where it is clicking.
Something I've noticed about this behaviour, seemingly consistently, is that
the 'double menu' problem does not happen if first i left-click on the blue
area of the taskbar.
If however I first left-click on the desktop for example, the problem happens.
The problem is inconsistent by the way, sometimes it happens and other times
not.
For reference, I'm currently using a new XP Home install of only a few days,
fully up to date, except I haven't installed IE7 or the cumulative IE6
security update which creates the annoying 'click here' glass/window over
active browser items such as flash.
Maybe ironically, the only way I previously found to stop this unwanted
'double menu' behaviour, was as a side effect of running Regseeker and
letting it delete every 'un-necessary' entry that it found.
So, any ideas how I can stop this small but annoying bug?
Thanks a lot,

Windows XP Pro
When I first got my computer, I enabled the "Syskey" option, which
requires a certain floppy disk to be in my computer when it started up
to let it start up. It has always come up to a screen while starting up

For some reason, the computer doesn't recognize my disk, and when I put
it in and click OK, it says "The Startup Key File has been damaged.

Is there any way to get around this screen now?
I tried safe mode, but it still comes up..

MS Windows Searcy Indexer problems
For the past few weeks I've had an on-going set of problems with my MS
Windows Search Indexer. The Microsoft Windows Search Indexer error
pop-up window keeps opening, mostly when I'm trying to use Outlook,
but it happens in other situations occasionally.
I checked Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel and find no entry
for Microsoft Windows Search Indexer. There is an entry for Windows
Desktop Search, but as I understand, this is a totally separate
program.
Device Manager shows no ? or ! marks on any of the entries. Apparently
everything is working right as far as Device Manager can tell.
In addition to this, something keeps changing my MIDI settings such
that my Pizzicato Music software goes mute. I have been able to get
the MIDI sound back on by tinkering around with the Control Panel
Sound settings and with the corresponding settings in my Pizzicato
Music software, but the problem usually recurs within a day or so. It
seems to happen when I've had a spate of Indexer error messages.

memory sticks. Running MS Windows XP Pro with SP2 installed.

Microsoft Request to Remember Login
Microsoft's request to remember my Login appears on some of my Login
web pages after entering the Login info for the first time. It then
auto completes Login info in the future on that web page (as it's
suppose to). But on other Login web pages, the Microsoft request to

Does the web page itself determine whether or not Microsoft will offer

svchost.exe consumes CPU and Memory - Memory Leak?
svchost.exe consumes increasingly more CPU and Memory after computer is left
on for more than ~ 5 hours. svchost.exe consumes about .7% of CPU within
first 1-2 hours after startup and increases to >10% after 5-10 hours. If the
computer is left on for long enough, I get â??The Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
service terminated unexpectedlyâ?? and Windows will automatically reboot.
In Task Manager, svchost.exe (owned by: NETWORK SERVICE) starts with ~4k
handles and increases to 40k overnight (12k in non-paged pool, 379k in paged
pool). In Process Explorer the only thing that this instance of svchost.exe
controls is RpcSs service (Remote Procedure Call - RPC). I ran PoolMon 15
min after starting and about 12 hours later and took screens of paged and
non-paged usage. The interesting tags are listed below. I tried searching
for some of these tags and didnâ??t find much information. The increased CPU
and memory usage does not affect normal computer usage but is detrimental
when gaming as FPS reduces noticeably and Ping increases 10x. I also have
not found an effective way to search for XP SP2 hotfixes. I have also posted
my machine specs below. Let me know if you need any additional information.

Assume I put a shortcut to a program on my desktop.

Ok. If now the two files are located in the SAME directory I can mark both
and drag them onto the program shortcut and everything works fine.
But what if the files are in different directories ?
If I mark the first file in WinExplorer, then switch to the second directory
and mark the second file then the previous marking of the first file is lost.
Ok, I could copy the second file to the first directory in order to use multi-marking
but this is rather unconvenient.
How else can I mark 2 files in two different directories?

Hard drive almost stops
I have a machine with WinXP, all the latest updates, P4 3.0GHz, with a 650GB
Adaptec Hardware Raid 5 Array (3 500 gig SATA drives) as my hard drive.
Recently I've been having a probelm where the OS seems to slow to a crawl
for upwards to three minutes. For instance if I delete a bunch of files,
the progress bar stops at 10 seconds, for a long time, related to how many
files are being deleted. Other disk access operations frequently have
similar problems. The machine will do anything non-directly disk related,
like change pages on the browser, but the icons on my desktop stop midway
throught refreshing, and Windows Explorer is frozen for that time.
Is this possibly that I have a 600GB drive, with just over 100 GB free and
'default' cluster size, or has no one ever seen this before, and it's likly
that it's the Raid controller?
Any thoughts would be helpful.

follow the instructions to change the launch and activation permissions but I
get lost when I open the DCOM configuration in Administrative tools because I
canâ??t figure out the â??friendly nameâ??. Could someone please help me resolve

External monitor toggling
Is there a way I can toggle between my laptop monitor and my external monitor
without using the keyboard on my laptop? This will sound lame, but my
keyboard on my laptop messes up and won't work, so I have to have it
unplugged and use an external keyboard. THerefore, I'm unable to just use the
fn+f5 toggle key I got so used to using. I don't want it to do the dualview,
I don't want it to display on my laptop screen since my laptop max resolution
is 1024x768 and my external monitor goes higher. Does anyone know if there's
a toggle function in the windows system that would do the same trick as the
keyboard controls? Thanks. Tag: Wallpaper rescales when "Show Desktop Icons" unchecked Tag: 802647
No Sound after External Monitor Installed
Windows XP; Thinkpad t40 laptop (being used as "desktop"); Gateway FHD2400
Monitor.
Monitor will display video, etc.; but no sound accompanies the video.
Also, when running applications with sound effects, no sound.
Any ideas why this would be happening and how it might be fixed?
Thanks in advance folks. And thanks again to Mark Ferguson and Shenan
Stanley for responses earlier today on separate issue. Tag: Wallpaper rescales when "Show Desktop Icons" unchecked Tag: 802643
help - folder titles gone weird
Hi
I am still having trouble with my folders. The folder names are all correct
when viewed in explorer etc but when I open a folder the name of the folder
in the blue bar at the top of the dialogue box only displays the first letter
of the folder. This is the same for major folders like My Documents, as well
as all folders within it, also for Control panel the same thing is happening
- when I open it there is only a "C" in the blue bar. For webpages and other
applications it's fine though.
It's quite annoying and I wondered what I've done to the computer for it to
display it like this. I've tried all the folder options but it is still
there. Can anyone help?
(I'm using windows XP home edition with all the relevant service packs and
updates).
thanks
Nancy :) Tag: Wallpaper rescales when "Show Desktop Icons" unchecked Tag: 802631
It also doesn't rescale if there is some "Active Desktop" window on it. WHen
it's gone the wallpaper goes back to relocating and larger when the the icons
are hidden.
