I picked up my computer from the shop a few days ago after a re-build of the
OS system (XP Home). While in the shop I let them install Norton AntiVirus
2008 and Webroot SpySweeper, but nothing else.

Now that I am at home, I keep getting the message that updates are ready for
my computer. I instruct it to download and install (Express Install) the
updates.

A few seconds later, I get the message that:

Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2
(KB936181)

Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748)

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2008 (KB890830)

Update for Windows XP (KB951978)

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB950759)

CANNOT BE INSTALLED.

I thought that either NAV or Spy Sweeper might be blocking it. I turned off
SpySweeper (but can't figure out HOW to turn off NAV) and tried again
(actually tried six times) with the same results.

Don't I need these updates? And if so, what are some suggestion for
resolving the problem?

Thanks in advance.

See if the information in this article helps. Note: While the title of the
article only mentions repair installation, it's been reported in these
newsgroups that the suggested fix may help when the issue occurs after a clean
installation.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

If that doesn't help, you might want to post you question to the
microsoft.public.windowsupdate newsgroup.

Good luck

First of all a quick Google search would have led you to this
information which is how I found it.

Do the following:

Click Start > Run, and input the following commands in the Run textbox:
(you can make this simpler by copy/pasting one line at a time, then
click OK after each one, then click Start, Run again and repeat with the
next command)

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml2.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll

You will receive a message stating the process succeeded after you input
each command.

After that, visit the Windows Update site again, and see if you can do
the updates or not ?

Then post back here if you are successful.

Here is another solution right from Microsoft:

Errors Occur When You Try to Install Updates from the Windows Update Web
Site
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;817753

Afterwards, installing the Q817287: Critical Update (Catalog Database
Corruption in Microsoft Windows XP) fix will stop this above issue from
happening again

YES! Method 1 worked perfectly, and I'm back in business

Thanks again for your help. MAN! I hope I don't have to reload the OS
again. LOL

Three days I've been working on it, but I'm now back to having the computer
the way it was before the "Geek Squad" at Best Buy crashed the OS.

I hope everyone is VERY careful about taking their computer to the "Geek
Squad." Independent owner-operated shops are the ONLY way to go in my
opinion.

Again . . . thanks for your help in both cases.

Ray, thanks for the tips. I used the "Method 1" outlined in the MS
bulletin, and it worked perfectly (see my response to Nepatsfan above).

Thanks for your help.
