    - Help and Support page, in XP Pro. doesn't connect to the internet. A week or so ago, I did a "Respawn" on my Alienware box. Since then I find that when I open the Help and Support page for any reason, the "Did You Know" section tells me I'm not connected to the internet. When it found the files, I saved it to my desktop; but I notice that it saved it as having searched both my C & D drives. Why should this be, and can it not be changed to save as specified?     - Unable to Access LinkStation (Wireless External Hard Drive) Files I have been using a Buffalo LinkStation Pro LS-250GL High Speed NAS Wireless External Hard Drive and all of a sudden I can't network with it. It has worked fine for over a year on my primary XP (SP2) laptop, and 2 other laptops I own (both XP SP2) have no problem accessing the hard drive and its files. Now - although I can access the hardware through its web interface and can log in and change settings, it won't let me access files. I have been in contact with BuffaloTech support as well as Symantec/Norton and both insist that something changed in Windows to cause access problems. I have disabled and re-enabled Norton Antivirus and uninstalled and re-installed the Buffalo LinkStation software and updated their firmware to no avail. I haven't used the external drive for a month, maybe 2 months, and I doubt I could rollback far enough to a system restore point to see if that would solve the issue.     - OMG XP hangs at startup I useOk guys, I just did a clean reinstall of windows xp pro on my gateway desktop. I had all my printers, scanners and almost all of my software in as well as all window updates including SP3. I was loading Winfax and had a problem installing it. When I restarted windows it hung up at the Windows XP screen with the scrolling blue dots. I rebooted to safe mode and uninstalled Winfax. Again it hung up. I went back to safe mode at used system restore to last night. Restarted, same problem.     - How to save and later restore icon layout? I carefully arrange icons on my desktop. Every once in a while I ending up running applications that think they need to rearrange the icons on my desktop, completely messing up the arrangement I had set up. Is there a way to save and later restore my icon layout, so I can set up the arrangement I want, save it, and then if something rearranges it later, I can then restore the layout I had saved?     - CHKDSK - Volume Dirty, Can't Recover System Upon Startup...XP goes into CHKDSK of which the reason is Volume Dirty and hangs at 60% complete (Stage 1 of 3). It just doesn't seem to be doing anything at this point as it appears hung, dead in the water. What has me concerned is, there is no option available for me to go another route to recover my system, even with the XP CD. It goes straight to CHKDSK as mentioned earlier and hangs.     - problem with windows sizing Hi, its me, the fussbudget with DOS experience - latest rub (and I checked the NG for similars) is: all of a sudden, when I open Windows Explorer, it comes up filling about 2/3 of the screen. I maximize it, Ctrl-X out, and re-open, but the next time I open Windows Explorer, there was no permanent effect. Also my web-browser comes up about 98% of the screen, and I just like it as maximal as possible, because of my weak, old eyes.     - Reinstall Windows XP problem!, Where are the harddrives??? Alright. I'm a pure Linux user (The kind that programs by using magnets on the harddrive ) Anyway, so I'm trying to help my mom out but is having kind of a hard time since I ain't that used with windows. Here's the problem. When booting up Windows it takes quite a long time loading the OS. Plus when you go into "My Computer" it takes even longer to find the harddrives. So my mom decided to reinstall Windows XP Pro on her pc. But then when she put the CD into the CD-Drive and started the installation. She had to face quite a bizzare thing. It can't find the harddrives. And when you try to proceed it gives this error: (Translating Swedish to English) QUOTE An error occured and Windows have shutdown to prevent problems with your computer. Following file can be the cause for the problem: setupdd.sys PAGE_FAULT_IN_NOPAGED_AREA If this is the first time, reboot. If the message is shown again you should... Control that all new hard- and software are correctly installed. If this is a new installation, you can contact hard- or softwaremanufactures if you need special files for Windows. If the problem remains you can try to deactivate or remove new hardware or software. Deactivate alternativs for the bios for example caching or shadowing. [NOTE: Didn't have anything like that in the BIOS] Technical Information *** STOP: 0x00000050 (0xE5132708, 0x00000000, 0xF77BA9A8, 0x00000002) *** Setupdd.sys - Address F77BA9A8 base at F7793000, Datestamp 41107c8f So I thought it was kind of wierd that the installation CD can't find the harddrives but there's no problem in booting up the system and start Windows. My mom though checked what the error means and according to Microsoft that error is supposed to mean that there's an error in the computers RAM. I put in my Ubuntu Live-CD which includes a program called MemTest1.7 which testes the RAM. I did the test twice and the test passed both with no warnings or problems at all. So I booted up a virtual Ubuntu OS on my moms computer to confirm that the harddrives were working. And they were. But there were no windows in them. According to Linux they were completley empty. Ubuntu is also made to detect any Windows installation and ask if you want to install Ubuntu on the same Partition. But that never happend. So from what I know from previous experiences, my mom is currently running on a Windows system but I don't know where it is. My common sense tells me that it should be in her harddrive but windows can't find them. Linux can though, but it says it's empty. I got two solutions, but I hope you have a better one. Install Linux and then hope that the harddrives are visable for the Windows CD.(Though my mom doesn't like that one) Ask the ghost living in moms computer to nicley surrender the harddrives and get a free cookie.     - Certain things are unclickable Seems that my system will semi-freeze. I will bootup and i cannot click the start button. From here as i navigate to other pages using Firefox or EI i have to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to unlock the system till i again go to another page.     - XP Themes disappear again When I Restarted the XP themes were gone again but they were in the themes folder. I received an error message stating the theme service was not running and so I tried to start it in the Computer Management Administrative Tool in the Control Panel.     - Error 1402 when trying to uninstall a program Running XP Home SP3. I downloaded a trial version of Migo Software PC Backup Pro. Had problems running the program, and wanted to uninstall. Uninstalling in Contol Panel/A/R Programs yeilds an "Error 1402. Could not open key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\.nbk\Shell New. Verify you have sufficient access." Searched MS KB articles and found kb236592. Went into Registry, found key, right clicked, selected permissions, changed to give me full control, checked "Replac e permission entries on all child objects..." Tried to uninstall again, got same error message. I am unable to send a support inquiry to Migo Tech Support since I didn't buy, and don't have a serial number. Located their phone numbers. One doesn't connect, the other doesn't answer. I recall thet Microsoft had a uninstall utility that I used to get rid of some Symantec "leftovers". Is it still available would it work?     - Trouble with Microsoft Word When I finish composing a document and go to "Save As" in the FILE pull down menu I get a small window titled MICROSOFT VISUAL BASIC. In the window it says, "compile error in hidden module:Main". There are 2 buttons, 1 says ON and the other says HELP.If I click on OK, the window goes away, (no SAVE AS action) If I click on HELP a new window appears titled "Microsoft Office XP Professional with Front Page". In the box it says, "Please wait while windows configures Microsoft XP Professional with Front Page" Then it wants me to insert "microsoft Office XP Professional with Front Page"disk and click OK. I do not have Windows XP Professional, I have Windows XP Home Edition. This whole thing started when I loaded the language recognition software, IBM's ViaVoice. In an attempt to fix the problem I went to the Control Panel and removed theViaVoice software but that did not fix the problem. I assume the ViaVoice had a file conflict somewhere with my MS Word.     - New XP Pro in dual-boot is mute Hi Folks, The computer (Medion Multimedia PC MD8833) has Vista Home Premium pre-installed. I have installed a newly-bought XP Pro in a separate partition as a dual boot setup. All in XP is now working after several trials and tribulations EXCEPT the sound. Realtek High Definition Audio is on the motherboard. Attempts to install drivers for it, from various sources including the CD supplied with the computer as 'XP Drivers', a file recommended by DriverDetective and one from Realtek site, fail towards the end of the installation process with a cryptic 'failed' message. One error code announced is 0xE0000227 Does anyone know what this means and what has generated it? I wonder if anyone else has encountered this sort of problem with sound in a dual boot? The Vista installation partition is Hidden and Vista has not been booted at all when I try these installations. The Installshield runs for quite a long time, extracting many files and it is almost at the end of a progress bar when it fails. This seems to imply that it thinks it is installing to the correct hardware?? It may be relevant that, if I go into Device Manager (where a yellow ! is shown against this item) and ask Windows to reinstall the driver, nothing at all happens when that button is clicked.     - explorer.exe proccess keeps stoping Greetings, I am working on a Dell dimension 4600 that was riddeld with spyware. I've done several scans and install AV protection. However, at startup the explorer.exe process keeps crashing caussing the desktop to flash about every 5-10 seconds. This happens in safe mode also. I can get to a command prompt and launch task from there.     - Netmeeting causes remote keyboard to fail I was conducting a Netmeeting session with a remote Windows XP laptop user last Friday. After our session was over their keyboard would only type gibberish. Rebooting did not help. I set up another Netmeeting this morning and without doing anything other than setting up the meeting the problem went away. I had the user power cycle the laptop and the problem returned.     - Updates will not install I picked up my computer from the shop a few days ago after a re-build of the OS system (XP Home). While in the shop I let them install Norton AntiVirus 2008 and Webroot SpySweeper, but nothing else. Now that I am at home, I keep getting the message that updates are ready for my computer. I instruct it to download and install (Express Install) the updates. A few seconds later, I get the message that: Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181) Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748) Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2008 (KB890830) Update for Windows XP (KB951978) Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB950759) CANNOT BE INSTALLED. I thought that either NAV or Spy Sweeper might be blocking it. I turned off SpySweeper (but can't figure out HOW to turn off NAV) and tried again (actually tried six times) with the same results.     - Where do I stick my license key? It's a VERY long story... I have a dell Dimension 2300 with xp home that's gone corrupt. I don't have the Administrator password, so I've limited access to clean things up. I decided to just reload it. It won't install from the i386 partition on the hard drive. Complains that it needs drivers.cab and mstask.ini. When I borrow those from another similar Dell machine, it gets a lot further but has problems: sxs.dll finds syntax errors in default.man... Ok, I give up. I cloned the drive from a Dimension 4550 and after a lot of messing around with drivers, it appears to work and msoobe claims it's activated. Now, I have two machines with the same license key. I have two keys for the 2300. One from the sticker on the case and a different one extracted from the registry. I "understand" that's normal for an OEM preinstall??? I also saved the wpa.dbl file from the original disk. So, to make it all legal, which key do I use and how do I get it into the right place...without screwing up the activation? What's the risk of doing nothing?     - Permissions problem after upgrade Hi all I just upgraded my 2000 server with an additional 1gb RAM. Now I have a problem.. Users (which are not admins) are complaining that they cannot save a file which they open from their folder on the server. They have full rights on their respective folder but still they cannot save, change filename or delete file.. it says a sharing violation or something like that.     - Don't get Login Screen Hello, I know that I may have to chase this up with the Nortons Ghost help, but I wanted to know what it may have done to cause the following. I have XP2 with what I believe is all the latest updates. I have not put SP3 on unless it just did that automatically. I have had a few crashes and lost too much stuff in the past and wanted to clone my primary C drive so if it happens again I don't have to spend days getting things up to speed again. I used Ghost to clone the C (with XP) partition to a good drive of the same make, size etc.. I have done this umpteem times so know what I am doing. It did it's job well and when I rebooted I was able to continue my work. When I had time, I wanted to check the clone drive so swapped it. It booted up fine but when I was expecting to get the Login screen, I got another same colour and style screen, but with a smaller XP Windows logo etc. I was unable to interact with it as there was nothing to interact with although the mouse was moving fine. (Very BIG letters and images) It's like someone turned a giant magnifying glass on the content of IE 7.x IE does this on every page for every web site, even with encoding set to Auto.     - explorer.exe problems I have recently encountered a problem with my Dell laptop running XP. The first thing I noticed was that my desktop background disappeared, replaced by a plain blue screen. Then after a while explorer.exe would shut down right after I logged in. Now when I use Task Manager to boot explorer.exe it boots up and shuts down over and over. Anyone know the problem here? I suspect some kind of virus but I have no idea where to begin. Thanks.     - Blotchy XP Open Screen, Dots Around Cursor & Sys Tray Icons I just installed XP Home SP3, but that may be just a coincidence. Since then, the XP Open Screen has blue dashes or sometimes blue squares or rectangles scattered throughout the black background. Cursor arrow lower half is dots or other times has a rectangle of black dots horizontally on either side of its lower half. In systems tray, PC-cillin icon bottom half has dots in it, the Quicktime icon has a rectangle of dots through the bottom half and the Creative Diagnostics Agent icon is just a rectangle of dots. Otherwise, all screens are clear and no operating problems with Word, IE or anything else. I tried a system restore, so then I had to reload SP3. I did a Safe Mode start and the cursor looked fine. I did a scandisk and disk cleanup. Still the same problems. I didn't want to get into msconfig.exe for fears of screwing something up, so I thought I'd ask for help.     - MMC and other system utilities not starting without any error mess I have a fully patched XP Pro SP3 laptop where no MMC snap-in (or mmc.exe itself) is starting and also things like ntbackup.exe and msinfo32.exe are not starting. They give _no error messages_, nothing just happens when clicking things under for example Control Panel/Administrative Tools (actually the Finnish equivalents, this is a Finnish language Windows) or trying to start things from the console. There are probably others in addition to mmc, ntbackup and msinfo32 that are not launching, but basically this problem seems to be limited to Windows components and not applications. Some things that do work are IE7 and Windows Explorer. Things ruled out thus far are simple drive errors and installed AV. I wish I knew what happened to the machine just before it started acting up like this, but reports from the user indicate that the latest patches are probably the only things installed on it recently.     - Now that SP3 is installed, what can I delete? I'm running XP Home Edition, upgraded to that from an OEM copy of ME. I've heard that if I create a slipstreamed SP3 XP installation CD, I won't have such folders as: C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$ and: C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ so can they be deleted now?     - Blank screen I have a computer with WindowsXP SP2 on it and the splash screen will come up but then after that it goes to a blank screen. The only thing that will show up is the mouse cursor. I've tried safe mode, safe mode with command prompt and also VGA mode, and they all produce the same reslult, a blank screen. Like I said the Windows XP splash screen works fine so I don't believe it is a video card or monitor problem. I went to Microsofts web site and found this hotfix for the problem "WindowsXP-KB948277-X86-ENU.EXE". So I downloaded it with another PC since I can't see anything on the screen with the bad PC.     - IE7 not connecting Hi, I installed IE8 Beta, played around with it for few days then uninstalled it. Now it seems something in the TCPIP level seems broken. I can ping and tracert out to any site, but IE7 will not work (nor will Firefox). Try changing to the classic view, applying it and then changing back to see
if toggling the start menu type will clear the problem.

You might want to check on the following.

Go to Control Panel and double click on the Taskbar and Start Menu icon.
In Taskbar and Start Menu Properties, click on the Start Menu tab.
On the Start Menu page, click on the Customize button.
In Customize Start Menu, look in the Start menu items box and make sure that
Enable dragging and dropping is checked.
Click OK twice.
