Whenever I try to use an online shop such as amazon I can order the item but
then even though the baskets says the item is there when I continue to the
checkout it doesn't recognise that anything is in my basket. This happens on
every shopping site I have recently tried it is as if my computer isn't
recognised at the final step. A similar problem is happening with my anti
viral software, where it starts the update process but then doesn't recognise
that it has completed it? I am at a loss.

Enable cookies for those sites.

Usually it's just a case of allowing cookies.

Since that did not do the trick...
my *guess* is that it's your Norton security package...
but you'd have to sort through the settings for that...
as I do not use it so could not advise you

Certain anti-spyware programs can cause this problem. They may, for
example, prevent certain types of scripts from running. I do not have this
problem with Amazon, but I have the same problem on Newegg. I must disable
AdMuncher when I want to order from Newegg.
