    - what's limited about xp limited account? Confused by limited accounts. I set one up, but it has access to the documents of administrator accounts, read, write. I didn't try execute yet but I suspect it would work.     - system restore from command line Hi All, I currently have a winxp pro system with a corruypted software hive in the registry. I Booted into a PE env and using avast registrty editor recovered the softeware hive from a logfile. This gave me hope. But when I boot it still halts after loading mup.sys disabling mup .sys doesn't help. so what i would like to do is run srtsui.exe however can't get into safe mode and repair mode will no allow me to run rstrui.exe...     - no internet connection After removing all the spyware, trojans infected on a friends computer, by various antispy programs, the internet connection no longer works. The system now seems free of viruses, but after removal it has caused loss of connection. After attempting to access the windows firewall via control panel to check what may be blocking, it says error, unable to open. System restore also has a problem where as it also seems not to be working. Before the internet connection went down, we logged on to windows one care site, downloaded the necessary files and proceeded to do a scan. It stopped scanning at 51% with an error message.(not sure what message it said as I was not there at the time) After that, no internet connection. Tried reloading his isp software, unable to connect to modem. It does appear to me that there is some sort of corruption in the windows firewall causing all this, is there a work around it, or a clean wipe of h/d his only fix. Running xp sp2 dual core cpu, 2 gb ram Programs used to clean were, spybot, spyware doctor, super anti spyware, adaware. Anti virus protection is nortons. Any help is appreciated. Cheers.     - Desktop display became darker Desktop display became much darker. Windows XP2, MS Office Pro 2003, Today my computer monitor, ViewSonic Professional PF 790, flickered, and now my screen is much darker. Even this dialogue box has an off-while color.     - Wnds XP - Reinstall - Discover Programs? Due to a Virus, I was forced to reload Win XP. We had a problem where after the new load Windows would boot to a Bulescreen and would not load or allow access to Explorer.exe. We renamed /Windows as /WinOLD and then reloaded WinXP. Now windows does not know aout my existing applications. Is there a utility that will force XP to discover and check-in existing applications? TIA -- Another satisfied Microsoft user!     - Task Bar Disappears when Computer Hibernates I have been experiencing an issue where when my computer goes into hibernation the task bar disappears.     - fatal error on startup On my desktop I am running XP home with service pack 3 and all updates. It was working fine yesterday and I have not knowingly installed any software or changed any hardware for at least a month (except windows updates). Today I got an svhost error on startup - "Instruction at 0x83fffffd referenced memory at 0x83fffffd. The memory could not be written" Shortly later it froze so I rebooted, getting the error "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". After several unsuccessful tries to reboot I used F8 and selected latest known good configuration. It seemed to start OK then I got the svhost error again. Every time I reboot I get an error. Sometimes svhost (always the same memory addres), but also "service executable experienced an error and has to close". It seems to start OK in safe mode. Also if I leave the svhost error message window open the computer seems to work - only when I press the OK button (which I hguess shuts down the svhost service of which about 5 are running) does it hang. Can anyone tell me what the likely problems are and how to solve it? A good starting point may be to find which instance of svhost is causing the memory write error and what process opened it - any ideas there?     - Winxp Sony 2.4gh -- 1gig ram sp-2 I have a right click on desktop & computer frezzes. Open taskman & exeplore is @ 100%. I can only use right click in some folders. I ran all the virus scans I could, did restore many times. This has been ongoing for about 2 months. Cannot find any help. Ready to reinstall Winxp. Will not let me install sp3. all help appreciated.     - Microsoft Office Outlook has encountered a problem I have been dealing with this problem for a while now. EVERYTIME I use Outlook 07 it will not allow me to open a message, create a new message, or view my contacts. I constantly get the error message "Microsoft Office Outlook has encoutered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on migth be lost. Then it has a check box to "restart Microsoft Office Outlook".     - Can copied files work on another hard drive? I posted about my problem below (cannot get Internet or Help to work, etc.) I'm a novice, so please forgive my lack of knowledge. I have all the files on my main hard drive (C) copied onto another hard drive in my computer. I know I should have done a backup - "famous last words". It has been suggested that I swap the cables on my hard drives and in effect, make the other hard drive the main one. Could this work? The other programs (Word, Excel, Windows Explorer, etc.) still work on the computer. I would use Internet on this computer but I can't save my email files, as I have Outlook Express on that computer and this one has Windows Mail (Vista operating system). Sorry for the long post.     - Wondows XP Service packs 2 & 3 Had some computer issues, worm virus or something..got rid of it. Now my windows icon at the bottom keeps saying this version of windows is no longer secure. Of course then the solution is to download the service packs. I attempt to download the service packs and keep getting error messages. If I try to download SP3 which states it has the previous versions included the error message comes up that the setup has detected the version of sp installed is lower than necessary. then states I need service pack 2 at least. When I try to install SP 2 it will not complete. So I am stuck with this issue. Any help? By the way I did look for the things that were listed to uninstall due to errors, they were not on my computer.     - Help! XP has somehow corrupted my Internet Today I went to Help to try to resolve a shutdown problem I had. The second option was to uncheck "system.ini" in "msconfig". After I rebooted, my computer went nuts. I lost my Desktop settings, my Norton Systemworks will not work, I can't get Help to come up, and I can't use Internet. (I'm on another computer right now.) When I go to Control Panel, I can't bring up the "Telephony" option. If I try to start a new connection using the Wizard, I can't set up my ISP info. I have dial-up and it is "grayed out", leaving only the Broadband setting. I don't know what happened! Can anyone here help me? I called my local ISP, but the tech didn't know - thought perhaps my drivers were corrupted. I can't use System Restore because I had Norton Go Back, and Norton doesn't work either.     - Error Message after loading XP SP3 Service Pack I try to keep my Dell Vostro Laptop computer up to date by using Auto Update. The last auto update loaded SP3. Since then I keep getting these error messages: CmSNXwye.eye - Application Error "The instruction at "0x77c2a61d" referenced memory at'0x00000004". The memory could not be "written".     - SFC.EXE Scan Errors I am running XP MCE SP3, I recently had an error which corrupted a number of system files. I attempted to use the SFC.EXE utility to repair files; however, during scan it asks me to insert XP PE SP3 and XP PE (CD 2) as well as my XP MCE installation disk. The problem is that no matter which disk I insert another error occurs and says it is the wrong disk please insert XXX disk. I have downloaded all SP and burned them on CD too, still no joy.     - picture and fax viewer kills drive labels Oh, boy, this is a wierd one . . . I am running XP SP 2. Through Windows Explorer (or WSH, WMI, etc.), I can rename a mapped drive so that it has a more meaningful name. I've been doing this for years without any problem. Starting recently (not sure when), after renaming my mapped drives, if I open an image in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, doing so blows away the new labels. I can see in Process Monitor that rundll32 (which is running shimgvw.dll, i.e., the picture viewer) is going through the drive mapping registry keys and deleting the _LabelFromReg key which specifies the label.     - KB951748 Security Update Kills Network Connection again I do not have Zone Alarm installed, so any response to this post pointing to those updates will be wasting everyones time..... (again). When KB951748 is installed I lose web access to the Internet, but I can still connect to the router admin page. The router can ping out via it's admin page OK. Ping does not work from the PC command line. During my testing I removed all firewalls bar the Windows one and the firewall built into the router DG834 (set to allow all). Also note I have other PC's connected to the same router with the KB951748 patch installed, these PC's have no problems connecting. So I don't suspect the router. I have XP media edition running on an AMD x64 dual core processor. The XP is a 32 bit edition. Up to now I have been running without KB951748 installed, I thought things may have moved one with more updates being released in Aug 08. But no joy. Anyone have any ideas?     - SP3 and the Beethov9.wma file I have a Dell laptop which I keep curent with automatic updates. I recently posted here a problem I was having installing SP3 with a copy error coming up when it tried to load the Beethov9.wma file. If you try to skip file it comes up again later and the installation aborts. Lucky that it was able to use the restore point to back up to SP2. Response to my posting gave me several Microsoft KB's on SP3. None of which worked. Later I goggled on Beethov9.wma and got a number of postings about the same problem. One said he fixed the problem by changing ownership of C:/documents&Settings/allusers/documents folder. I checked this folder and was told I did not have access rights. I have full admin priviledges (only user). Tried to erase was told it was windows file and necessary for windows. Then per poster's instructions I booted in safe mode under Adminstrator and changds security access on the folder to Administrator and myself with full control. When I rebooted in normal mode to try update again I checked this folder and it was gone. SP3 installation worked perfectly. Task Manager CPU Usage 100% ...RAM need to free Okay I had a virus but after running Webroot Spysweeper, Avast anti-virus, XoftSpySE, Uniblue Registry clean and Booster 2 and Speed-up 3... But my CPU usage (windows Task Manager) keeps spiking and my Internet Explorer 7 has one window pane that states that I am not conneced to the Internet notice (and is corrupted). I have roamed around and the consensus is that it is a disaster and (not on Microsoft site) causing a lot of hatred towards Redmond.... Customers feeling betrayed and angry at an upgrade that is less stable and causes a host of problems.... So I will wait on SP3 until the bugs are worked out. Funny you'd think - make it functional and then release but that's another way and not a question..... So if anyone can suggest what do re spiking and RAM.     - tried everything to get Icon Image back - no luck!! The favorites favicon.ico has changed to the default Internet Explorer "E" icon.     - Cannot see partitions more than 128Gb in Windows Professional XP S I've a legal copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 3. I recently bought a 320Gb Maxtor PATA HDD. My BIOS recognizes 320Gb, so Linux and Plan 9 Operating Systems, but for some extrange reason, Windows XP SP3, only 128Gb. I created EnableBigLba Key (It didn`t exist), DWORD, Value 1 in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters Rebooted the machine, but had no effect. When I open Administrative tools->Equipment Management->Disk Management I see always a 128Gb Disk instead the real, 320 Gb. The same with Partition Magic and other partitioning tools. My XP is in Spanish. First I installed XP, then upgraded to SP1, later upgraded to SP2 and finally upgraded to SP3. I upgraded toSP3 because with SP2 I had the same problem eith the HDD, and I thougt taht it would be solved upgrading patches. What can I do to see complete 320Gb HDD? Thanks in advance.     - Managing mouse behavior This is probably a stupid question with an obvious answer. I will not object to answers which begin with "Listen, moron." I have an HP Pavilion dv6110us laptop with a Synaptics touchpad V 6.3. The computer runs XP Media Center Edition, Version 5.1. The default behavior of the "mouse" pointer seems to be to select and open if I hover over a dialog box or link for more than a little while. How do I disable this? I don't want the computer to go off and do stuff just because I have the cursor pointed at something. Further, I have the pointer set to go to the default position when a dialog box is opened and I certainly don't want all dialog boxes to go off and do the default. What's the point of a dialog box in that case? While I could obviously choose not to send the pointer to the default response, that seems unnecessarily global as a solution. I did handle this behavior on W 98 years ago but I don't seem to be able to find it on this XP Media Center Edition installation. My preference would be for the link/icon,shortcut/filename in Windows Explorer to be: 1. Highlight if the pointer hovers over it or passes over it 2. Select programs, files and shortcuts with a single click, open with a double click 3. Open web links with a single click This was noted with Service Pack 2. I have just let Windows Update put SP3 on the computer. While I have not checked, I don't think that will change the bahavior. I also have a Dell Dimension 7300 desktop running XP Pro, SP2, on which the pointer behaves the way I want it to.     - Application Error in three of four users I have a Windows Media Center machine with three users (plus the "Administrator") The "Administrator" user, reached only by Ctrl-Alt-Del at the login screen, seems to work fine. When we login to any of the users, we get the "Application Error - The instruction referenced at location could not be "read"" Obviously not verbatim, but this does not occur in the Administrator account. A virus was removed, which I believe the remnants result in the App Error. I can get into the registry through the Administrator, but cannot with the users. I believe there is a reference in the registry that, when removed, will clear up this error. The errors seem to occur as programs are loaded at startup.     - 64bit Version of Vista......What are some reasons why I would want to install this? Hello, I'm trying to figure out why I might want to install the 64 bit version of Vista. What would it give me? Ok, I'd be able to access more than 4gig of RAM (which my motherboard doesn't support). Is it more solid and stable? Would it be faster than the 32bit version? And where would I get the 64bit version? Is it on the same DVD as my 32bit version of Vista? Could someone convince me why I should care about a 64bit operating system?     - Discoloration of my monitor's screen?!? We had a severe thunderstorm pass overhead today! There was a lightning bolt that struck very close to my house. The T.V. and the computer' screens were both affected, the screens went to a multi-colored tye-dyed color. There was no power outage and they are both on surge protectors; but I can't get my computer screen to reset. I hope it (the lightning) didn't screw up my screen.     - can anyone help I bought a computer eight months ago, from a proper computer shop. 2 weeks after I bought it it started to freeze and then crash, I could get it back to working order again, but then it would get worse and I would not be able to get it started again, I took it back to the dealer and he ran tests and programmes though it, over the course of time after 8 visits back to him, he took the whole computer back to default, still as always I had the same problem, after 6 or 7 seven days it would start to freeze and then crash and after 10 ten days I could never get it going again, the last time I took it back, he SAID he put a new motherboard in it!!!     - 3 GB switch Hi all, Just a quick question. I have XP home with SP3 and I'm trying to apply the /3GB switch. I entered the correct lines in the boot.ini file using the system/advance/start up recovery settings/edit. I then saved the file and rebooted. After it re-booted I was told to look under the systems general tab and make sure it said "physical address extension". But it does not. I've rechecked the boot file and its typed exactly like I was instructed to type. Does anyone know what I did wrong? Does Home edition allow the /3GB switch?     - Internet Explorer 7 - Problem Loading Videos I just recently purchased a new laptop that came with Windows Vista installed. The OS on my old computer was Windows XP and, if I recall correctly, had Internet Explorer Upgraded to 7.0 along with the latest version of Firefox. Both Browsers were able to load and play videos off of yourtube and google/video just fine. Now, with Windows Vista I'm unable to view any type of video while browsing. I thought it might have to do with Adobe Flash Player, but the website redirects me to the following link everytime I attempt to download the program. So, I'm assuming I need to somehow adjust my browser from 64bit to 32? I've tried searching through my browsers settings but just have no idea what to look for. I'm really lost will all of this.     - Office 2003 Word and Outlook "shut down" error Help! I downloaded an Adobe update and since that point I'm having problem with Word and Outlook. It doesn't matter which of them I'm using they will "shut down" and throw out what I'm doing. This is the error message I get "Microsoft Office Word encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." The do offer a "recover" but this is happening 40-50 times a day! HELP!     - XP Home Packard Bell laptop, total hard drive failure, no Windows XP Home CD but valid licence key on back of pc, what can I do? Dear Group, A friend has asked me to fix his laptop, the hard drive has failed completely. I've tried it in other pc's and none even recognise that it's connected in the BIOS. Purchased a replacement hard drive, installed it, and now I'm stuck. It had Windows XP Home, still has the licence key sticker on reverse. He doesn't have the CD because he thinks he was supposed to burn a disc but "never got round to it". What can I do? I've sent Packardbell Support an email asking what they recommend, so far just an automated reply saying they will get back to me. My brother has a fujitsu siemens XP Home cd, I am going to try using that to install, but I'm guessing their will be an error or something since it's not Packard Bell, is that the case or will this work? Do I need to find someone near me with a Packard Bell XP Home cd? Can I download this version of Windows XP Home from the internet and install using the valid key on reverse of laptop?     - Application to prevent idle logout I am running XP in a University environment. When I leave the office (to work in a lab) the machine logs out after about half an hour. This is annoying because it takes 5 minutes to log back in. Is there some way I can prevent the log out? hard drive, the "detected new hardware" message pops up and the computer says
that my "new hardware is installed and ready to use". But when I go to "My
Computer", the device or drive does not show up under "drives' and there is
no way to find it. Device manager shows that it has been installed and is
"working properly". Anyone know what is going on? The plug and play thumb
drives and external hard drives work on other computers...

Jake, try when in Device Manager to rt click on the aforementioned drives
and assign a drive letter to them.
