I have an HP with windows XP. Whenever I plug in a flash drive or external
hard drive, the "detected new hardware" message pops up and the computer says
that my "new hardware is installed and ready to use". But when I go to "My
Computer", the device or drive does not show up under "drives' and there is
no way to find it. Device manager shows that it has been installed and is
"working properly". Anyone know what is going on? The plug and play thumb
drives and external hard drives work on other computers...

Jake, try when in Device Manager to rt click on the aforementioned drives
and assign a drive letter to them.
