A machine running XP Pro.
Has an internal modem which is not picked up by Outlook Express.
Control panel --Modem settings reports that the modem is not installed
properly---
But Device manager says that it is woking properly and the modem query
operation has the modem responding to the commands.

I uninstalled the internal modem and installed a USRobotics modem which
was on the restart was picked up by the Op Sys and installed.

Again the same problem--not picked up by Outlook Express ( perhaps the
wrong COM port) ?

But again the conflicting reports from Control Panel and Device
Manager---

Your kind assistance please ,Richard

Do you mean the account settings in OE do not have your new modem available?

Outlook Express does not use the modem(s) directly. You need to set
up the "Connect To" entry which will dial your Internet Service
Provider's Internet access service. It is in this entry where the
modem will be seen.

Let talk about your internet first, are you able to connect to the Internet
and browse the web?. If yes then try this:

Open the OE click Tools >> Accounts >> Highlight the account you are using
hen click Properties.
On the account properties click on Connection Tab make sure this check box
is checked:
[ ] Always connect to this account using:
[ Local Area Network or /the modem ][v]
You can click on the drop down list to select or click on Add to add the
modem.
Click [Apply..] then click [OK], you may need to reboot or just close and
open the outlook Express, does it work?.
If it didn't after you selected the right modem then you are not connected
to the internet and you need to check your Security software not blocking
both your OE and the Internet connection from accessing or having access to
the net.
HTH.
